Dual Shock 4 Light Bars - turn them off, please

1. I wish you could turn off the light.
2. I wish you could pick different colors.
3. I wish you could turn the controller off when watching a movie.

Yes at number 3 haha.
When I tested a movie I couldn't put it on the coffee table as the TV reflected the light.
Couldn't turn it away from the screen as I could see the light glowing at me or to the side.

Ended up just putting the controller on the floor.

Nope, love mine.
People must live in some dark dank caves for the glow to be that glaringly horrible to you.
I am sure some third party options will come along..
Some of the comments in here are just really over the top.

I'm pretty sure I turned off the controller while watching a DVD the other night...

I'm in the camp that doesn't believe the LED has anything to do with the short battery life. I'd look to things like the audio processing/speaker/touchscreen for blame on that stuff.

Anyone tried these on their DS4?

The bottom right sticker in the pack almost covers the whole light bar. This is the standard blocks 50-80% type. I haven't bothered to make a properly sized one from the un-cut sheet since this is good enough. Honestly, the light bar caused less issues on my projector screen than I thought it could. I already had these light dims to tone down my AV rack

The light hasn't bothered me while playing games, but it is terrible that's on during movie playback. I had to bury the controller under a pillow when I was watching a blu-ray in a darkened room.

Is your HDTV HDMI-CEC capable? Enable the functionality on your PS4 and use the remote included with your TV instead of the DS4.

More on topic, I appreciate Sony integrating the Move functionality in the DS4. The light bar shows off in the periphery when playing in a darkened room and yet is not obtrusive IMHO. Besides it makes it easier to identify controllers in multiplayer.

And this is negatively impacting your gaming experience, how?
It can be distracting. My room is usually dim while I play, my set is low, and I have to sit quite close to the screen. An option to turn the brightness down would be welcome.

I think they should and fully expect they will add a toggle for the light but I am trying to understand how people are getting a reflection from it considering it's angled down so much, unless maybe playing with the controller somewhat verticle is your play style or something. I find the light totally useless for anything other than a charge indicator as it's not visible to the holder, no idea how a health indicator or other things would even work.

Enough rambling, yes allow it to be turned off.

I've played many of the launch games and none of them use the light in any meaningful or useful way. Some use it annoyingly - Sound Shapes for example pulses the light to the beat of the music. Just what I want when I'm gaming, a pulsating light in my peripheral vision drawing my eyes attention away from the game.

The worst part of the controller so far for me is the fact that I watched 3 hours of Netflix with a DS4 that was fully charged. At the end of those 3 hours, the DS4 lost a bar of life. That is ridiculous. Not sure if that's due to the light or perhaps they're streaming audio regardless of whether or not you have headphones connected. Either way, it shouldnt be happening.

Have you got the Camera? Does the DS4 still get picked up by the camera with the lightdim sticker on?

I don't have a PS4, but if I did I know this would annoy me to no end.

Unfortunately, I have a very, VERY glossy TV (it's the Sony Playstation 3D Display).

It's small, so I sit quite close to the screen (which suits me as I live in a small college dorm room). And it reflects all lights.

An option to turn it off would be nice.
This...

A simple lightbar section in the UI settings that controls the lights on the console as well as the controllers would work wonders. Some customization options would be cool too. I'd prefer to keep my console light blue instead of white.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Should be able to turn it off to save battery life anyway.

Stupid gimmick just like the backtouch that isn't needed.

Does anyone know if the touchpad draws power even in games that do not make use of it? If so, games that don't use it should have code in place to keep it turned off to save us some battery life. The same goes for the speaker.

Light bar is fine.. I like it.

It will not be patched out. Games like theif are using it.

I only notice it when the screen goes completely dark, its not a problem, you will get used to it.

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
I don't mind the light bar, it doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the console one way or the other.

My TV has a matte screen, so I can barely see the reflection.

This was my experience. I did notice it during a particularly dark missions in Killzone, but I didn't find it bothersome. I could only see it in pitch black conditions, and any amount of light in the scene made it almost impossible to for me to see, even when I was looking for it.

I've done tests with my tablet, where I pull up a web page and try and discern a reflection from 6-8 ft or so. It's visible when I'm looking for it but otherwise I wouldn't find it bothersome on a lit ingame scene.

its hilarious that people think the LED somehow is effecting battery life. do you know what a LED is?

anyways the light bars look cool, people always lookin for things to complain about

For people complaining about the controller light during movies, is the option to turn off the controller after X minutes not functional during DVD playback? Or just holding down the home button and 'turning off device'?

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Why don't they just put their controller somewhere that the light won't bother them for that matter?

Its a pretty big complaint considering the light bar doesnt really add much to games. Like others have said, its annoying cause there should be a switch to turn it off.

I didn't care about the light when everyone was complaining about it before the PS4 was released, but know that I have one...

I feel the exact same way.

I had assumed it would be more problematic with reflections that it actually ended up being for my setup, but I still see the light on various surfaces of my entertainment center during play. The main problem with it being on is that it contributes to power drain of batteries that just don't last very long compared to the Dual Shock 3 or any wireless stock controller from last or current (next) gen. Given how bright the lightbar is, there is no reason for its operation to not be user-selectable, especially in the case that no camera is connected.

This is the main issue. Give users a choice. I personally would prefer improved battery life than a gimmicky light on my controller that serves ZERO purpose. Seriously. No game I've played on the PS4 made me go "Oh man, I'm so glad I have a light on the back of my controller that I can't even see." It's a useless feature that degrades performance for my gaming experience.

I'd rather turn it off.
