PS4 HDD speed test thread (HDD/SSHD/SSD/STD)

Cheapest in the UK as far as I could see.

Seriously? Amazon Germany has the same model for 290€. Are drives generally more expensive in the UK? Or is it just some weird "you got pounds so we will bleed you dry while the number at the bottom is still lower than anywhere else" thing?

It's a slight anomaly and there were no other times to use. The entire thread is mostly useless as people measure differently, and a bunch of folk didn't bother reporting back.

I just did this.

I'd put that in your PC unless you get a super expensive 1TB SSD. I don't think I've seen much of a tangible difference over my Seagate SSD Hybrid for the asking price and the fact that I have about 727GB left even with a bunch of games installed.

My bloody 7200 drive hasn't arrived yet, and Amazon has no tracking for it. Console comes out in a few days. SHIT. Looks like the other drives have no Amazon Prime delivery options either...

No idea. It's nearer £285 on other sites.

I'm OK with it in the PS4 thanks :)

Thank god I've got my local Microcenter computer store near by, has all the HDD, SSHD and SDD I'd want. Sorry not trying to run it in.

hm. not used this for long. but it seems to have started to get bogged down. i noticed that while on the XMB it froze a bit. and after that when i started to play knack. the music would cut in and out. hmm.

I don't see your times written.
The same drive is arriving today, hmm, maybe I should pass on it.

Amazon has two versions: MZ-7TE500BW and MZ-7TE500LW. The BW is £248. I don't know the difference to be honest.

I was very close to ordering a Crucial M500 240gb for £95 in today's lightning deal, but didn't in the end. If it had been the 250 EVO then I might have done.

My other option is the Seagate 1tb or the 750gb XT. Seagate themselves seem to think the 1tb sshd is faster than the gen 2 XT, which was suggested by a few sites.
http://www.extremetech.com/computin...at-closes-the-ssd-gap-drops-momentus-xt-brand

One site (can't remember which) did have the 750gb XT as the faster, so make of that what you will.

I had a look on here http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/mid_range_drives.html but there seemed to be many Seagate 1TB SSHDs, so couldn't make head nor tail of it.

i figure when i popped it up i started downloading everything, going from one game to another trying to download and install probably caused it to get bogged down. but after restarting i had no issue. but i was done with going hyper mode trying to get everything back on there ;P

but the only thing i knew for sure was the cold boot which was 21 seconds. that was when you can hit X to start up the first thing on the menu.

That's a 7K1000, but the SATA II version. Model 0S03381. I think Toshiba's HDD division was bought out by WD and is now called HGST, but they're the same thing.

There's also a SATA III version of the Toshiba/HGST 7K1000, with the model number 0J22423.

Cheers, Nib. A quick Google seems to suggest the PS4 doesn't support SATA III anyway so the extra speed would be wasted? Might as well go for the SATA II version then!

That's correct. I went for the SATA III version myself, because it was the one available on Amazon (UK). But I doubt there would be any tangible difference in performance between the two versions.

What's the regular price of the Samsung 1TB Evo?

Amazon is showing it for $560, but I can't tell if this is a limited time black friday deal, or just regular price.

Edit: Slickdeals claims this is a crazy low price, so fuck it I'm in. I don't think I'll have a problem with the hardware setup of physically installing this in the new console, but how can I transfer my profile and game data over? And do I need to format the disk first using a PC, or can I just stick it in the PS4 unformatted and boot it up? Is there a guide somewhere?

You mean Hitachi and not Toshiba.

edit: WD just shortened "Hitachi Global Storage Technologies" to HGST

So in short, what to get for optimal performances at 1 TB size ? Seems the best 2 choices to consider are the HGST 7K1000 & the Seagate ST1000LM014. Which to choose from ?

Get it while it's hot! Regular price is $595. I'm not sure how you are going to copy anything over. You should probably save everything to the cloud and restore it (no idea if this is possible, just guessing). Otherwise, installation is a breeze. No need to format. Just replace the disk, let it boot and insert the USB stick. That's about it! There is a video on IGN that worked perfectly for me.

Actually I reneged and bought the 1TB SSHD instead. It was $450 cheaper, and only about 5% slower. If Sony ever releases an updated model of PS4 with a SATA III interface, I will definitely upgrade to a true SSD at that time.

It's awesome you guys are keeping tabs on this thread. Have you experimented with different drives yourself? Or just stuck with stock only? As in for your personal PS4, not the dev kits obviously.
We only use stock drives in the office, but we're confident that SSHD's & SSD's will offer a noticeable effect on performance (although this will vary from game to game).

When I get my personal PS4 on EU release day I'll be slotting in my SSHD straight away to reap the benefits :)

Man I really hope that maybe the PS4 Slim version will have SATA III support. Right now it just feels like (or actually is) a waist to put a SATA III drive in there ...

What is a "recovery update firmware"? On the PS4 HDD upgrade support page, it just says "download a firmware" and the link takes you to the page for 1.51

There's two files. One is for upgrading from the base firmware to 1.51. The other is for people who installed a new HDD ,as it includes 1.51 and the OS.

You are right. There is only one link. They don't seem to have a different "recovery firmware" for the 1.51 update. It must be close to 1 GB. If that's the file you used, you are good. I used the same one.

Got a ton of numbers and videos for you guys. I didn't bother measuring the times in the videos(also yes the video quality is crap). All games are downloaded and this is using the Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch ST1000LM014. Each test was done using my iPhone 5's stopwatch feature and the units are in seconds.

To First Splash means when a company logo appears(or intro video) and there isn't a loading icon anymore in the corner of the screen. An example of a loading icon is the ship in Resogun or the G in the middle of the screen for Killzone. To Main Menu/Menu means that there is no interference and it goes through all splash videos leading up to the menu in Killzone/pressing Start in Resogun/or the menu becoming available in the PS OS.

It is important to note the difference as for example, the splash videos in Resogun are lengthy but you can skip past them.

Standby mode was entered via this method: Press and hold the PS button for at least 1 second, and then select [Enter Standby Mode] on the screen that is displayed.

In conclusion, it is surprisingly faster to boot your system from cold than it is to boot it up from standby. I would also say that the Seagate is faster than the HGST as well, going from the times in the OP. Switching between apps to seems to have a minimal detrimental effect, if any, but someone would have to test this with more apps than just two.

Interesting results. I wonder why the stand by boot times for this SSHD is worse than the 7K1000. Maybe on standby boot the SSHD has to carry out some sort of memory management between the HDD and SSD? Still, it seems that overall with actual game booting times, the SSHD is slightly quicker.

Given my 7200rpm drive still hasn't arrived, maybe I should just order an additional ST1000LM014 just in case.

The SSHD is actually faster. People haven't been reporting their results properly.

Can you elaborate? Because a few people actually posted videos of the standby boot up too.

As stated earlier in the thread, downloading something or there being some activity when you go into standby mode affects the wakeup time. The times for those are all roughly 3-4 seconds and I didn't bother measuring those because they're all in the same timeframe that any difference could be chalked up to numerous factors. Then there is standby mode when nothing is downloading in the background. This is different than it booting up from cold as it takes significantly longer.

People have also been skipping through splash screens or noting the time when it hits the splash screen. Like one video I was looking at earlier, I'm pretty sure he was skipping through the splash screens.

For UK readers, the 1TB Seagate SSHD is now £75 at Amazon, although it won't be in stock until the 30th.
EDIT: Weirdly It dispatched today, and is arriving Thursday.

If you are looking for an SSD then there is another Crucial M500 lightning deal today, this time only 120gb. Given they had the 240gb on sale for £95 yesterday it looks like we'll maybe see the larger capacity drives towards the end of the week. Keep your eyes peeled!

Cheers, yeah I saw that too. I only went for Amazon because I've never had an issue returning items.

The Crucial 120gb is 55 today, 240gb was 95 yesterday. I'm hoping the 480 or 960 will come up in the next few days, and should be good value if these levels of reductions persist. In which case I'll maybe get one of those and cancel the 1tb SSHD.

Doesn't the spec say greater than 160gb for the hdd, so a 120gb ssd may not work?
Yes, you are right, it won't work. I wasn't suggesting people buy the 120gb, just highlighting that every day of the lightning deal has featured a Crucial SSD, so we may have the larger ones in the next few days.

Hey guys have a question whats the difference (Aside from a few dollars lol) between these two HDDs? I'm interested in choosing whichever one is "superior" in compatibility with the ps4 if at all :)

Thanks in advance!

The Seagate SSHD is faster than the 7k1000 despite being 5400rpm?
http://www.storagereview.com/hgst_travelstar_7k1000_review
The Seagate tested here is the 7mm version, laptop thin, 500gb, not the 1TB version. Still, seems to be faster than the HGST.

Here is a seperate review of the 500gb laptop thin.
http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_sshd_thin_review_gen3_500gb_st500lm000

The momentus XT gen 2 seems to beat it in some cases, but I've seen other reviews where the 1gb Seagate 9mm is meant to be faster than the XT. I guess we'll only know for sure when people have them in their PS4s. One quote stands out though:-

" Our benchmarking shows the Gen3 and Gen2 both outperform HDDs where it matters, in our real world traces where the onboard cache can really show its performance benefits. In that case, where data is nicely cached, the new 500GB Thin bests the 750GB Gen2 product by a significant margin. "
