Gran Turismo 6 Review Thread

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
You're coming from the point of view that any kind of reviewing standard should be in place across all websites, which I fundamentally disagree with. The great thing about having so many websites at our disposal is that we can choose which ones have standards that suit that, and ignore those that don't. If we took your route and forced every website to apply similar standards then that only suits your needs, not mine. Which again I don't understand because there already so many websites that suit your needs, get yer mitts off the others.

Its not a review if its not done by someone whos familiar with the medium. Esp if its a more technical title like the GT series.

Leave the casual shit for those who want to play simple quick fun like Mario kart, but have folks who know the medium and series review the more serious titles like Forza / GT.

Otherwise all you have is just misinformation bullshit everywhere.

Eh, this is the first GT game I don't have much interest in. I really wish they would have moved over to PS4.
It kills me to admit that this is how I feel too. I own every mainline GT, the prologues and a couple of the concepts. This one though, I just don't feel any rush to buy. If it was on PS4, it probably would've been my most anticipated game and I'd have been lining up waiting for the shop to open.

No.

[URL="http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation/gran-turismo"]Gran Turismo- 96
Gran Turismo 2 - 93
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec - 95
Gran Turismo 4 - 89
Gran Turismo 5 - 84
Gran Turismo 6 - 76

I fully expect the latest version's average to go up, but not doubting, that it's the worst reviewed GT by some distance.

I wasn't referrig to scores, but rather the matter which informs the reader of the plus and negative points of the game. Those seem to be the same. The lower average score is explained by reviewers, tired of playing the same game, who want more game mechanics, something which the series has always been reluctant to do.

Seems like most of the bigger sites are scoring it higher. I was surprised at Eurogamer's 9/10 when I read the review ; there sounded like there was a lot wrong with the game.

Yet it also sounds like there's still the core stuff that makes GT so great. The actual driving, for one.

I'm disappointed some issues from GT5 haven't been addressed (car sounds, online implementation, etc) but I'll still definitely pick this up at some stage. I hope they manage to patch things up nicely a few months down the line.

I only know English, so I am not able to translate them. The best I can do is to provide a Google translation of these excerpt.

No I mean, I got confused by the "Sweden and Finland" (spanish review) and "Norway and Denmark" (german review) in your post.

Yeah. Not sure if it's a translated review from another language though, as the author seems nordic.

Well, it's a spanish url... Maybe it was reviewed by one of the nordic gamereactor sites and then just translated to spanish and german so essentially it's the same review?

Part of the reason PD seems stuck in "old ways" is because Turn 10 has been treading on good, new ground. Things don't look old and stale until competition comes with fresh ideas and executes in a way that changes the baseline expectations of a genre.

lol... what fresh ideas does Forza 5 have? It has a lot less features than Forza 4.. a lot less than GT6. Is it microtransactions? Because thats the only new thing that F5 has brought to the genre. Both PS4 and XB1 have no support for racing wheels right now, so having GT6 on PS4 would be pointless today.

Metacritic is losing its value when you get 3-4 click bait reviews that score games low just to get clicks and increase their revenue stream.

I honestly had no idea that you could drive a lunar vehicle in this. It sounds awesome!

However, a couple of things which stuck out at me as I was watching the Rev3games review - he explicitly states that the multiplayer servers were not turned on before launch so they could not test it which seems like a huge oversight in a racing game (honestly, I'd prefer to wait two weeks and have a proper descriptive and informative review, rather than this scramble for having a review as soon as the embargo lifts), and the only criticism levelled at it in the summary is 'lacks innovation'.

Anyway, this is one of the screen captures in that review, which they sure is "taken from the real game running in real time" implying their captures have no bullshit and are true to the actual aspect of the game:

I mean, holy shit that is bad capture equipment.

Damn it, I told myself I was done with this thread, but wow. Even with the crappy capture equipment, that just looks like it has no right being on last gen hardware. Honestly, these guys never cease to amaze, I can't believe they got it to look that good. I know it sounds like fanboy drooling, but it isn't. I don't normally get this hyped up and enthusiastic, but PD deserve credit where it is due. It looks pseudo next-gen.

What can be more innovative than driving on the moon? haha

Whether its right or not there is always going to be a perception that GT is behind the curve until they fix crash damage, the impact model and sound

In any case, if that is all he has to offer the direction of the franchise then it is time to step aside.

And you assume that's all he offers because... Oh right, poor engine sounds and lack of visual damage modeling.

I guess we should just forget about Vision GT, Senna Institute collaboration, taking fan feedback on standard car visuals, track list, more intuitive and quick menus, Yokohama and KW collaboration for tire and suspension physics, his desire and push for simulating time change and atmospheric and weather changes, and dedication to providing comprehensive post-launch support for his game. I mean, he really should just try to pump out as many GTs within a couple years and put more content behind a paywall and call it a day.

Meh. I'm watching the Giant Bomb quick look instead of caring about these reviews.

First impression: it looks better than GT5! Menus and the overall graphics.

It's clear that PD have focused on doing what they do best (content, physics) rather than work on the flaws (sound/damage). Which means if you loved GT5 you will probably love GT6. If you can't stand GT cos of its flaws, then this iteration won't change your mind.

Also if people could please stop focusing on the metacritic score and read the actual reviews to see why GT is being marked down. Apart from that crazy Venturebeat one, the problems reviewers are mentioning seem like the same historical ones GT has always had.
I think Polyphony Digital needs to sacrifice contents for improvement to historic problems within the Gran Turismo franchise. Gran Turismo 3 had less than 200 cars in comparison to GT2s 650+ cars and look how massively acclaimed it is.
Dat tag. :(
I am so torn on this game. I think I will wait this one out a bit and might even go with my original plan and make gta 5 my ps3's swan song. One huge improvement that I have not seen talked about much on gaf is all cars are available in the dealership finally no more used car roulette.Plenty of the same old stuff to complain/wish they had fixed sadly ( my thoughts are based on game play videos and review reading).
They did? If so, that's awesome to hear. I hated the car roulette's used system in GT5 because the last thing I wanted to do was to have to worry about not only getting enough credits to buy a car, but also praying that you're able to get enough to buy the car you when it shows up before it disappears for X number of days.

Yes. the sound department is complete crap in GT. Don't even bother arguing with anyone saying otherwise.

That they did not fix it in 3 years time, with all the fans feedback begging for better sounds, just shows how, IMO, PD totally lost the sense of priorities. (to be fair: Kaz said that they are working on enhancing sounds...but he is not sure if they will make it for GT6... take that as you wish).

I really, honestly, don't even understand what PD sound engineers have been doing for 3 years.

If they don't ditch the standard cars and the bad sound design next gen, I'm going to jump ship.

from the review

Hm that really doesn't sound nice, oh well Assetto Corsa gets a content patch today... I will probably wait until there are more impressions from Sim fans. I have to wait for a wheel-stand anyway to use my wheel in the living room.

And so, 15 years since its inception, Gran Turismo carries on its pursuit much as it always has, delivering a driving simulator that's as exhausting as it is exhaustive, as infuriating as it is intoxicating. As a foundation, it's certainly more stable than its predecessor - and as a way to explore the thrill of four wheels it is, despite its many faults, exceptional, brilliant and pretty much peerless. It's not finished yet, but Polyphony likely never will be - but in Gran Turismo 6 it's just delivered the broadest, most complete iteration of its epic vision.

Look there is still some cool concepts in the games like Vision GT as you mentioned, but everything you've just said convinces me more and more that he would be better served as an executive producer or some sort of brand ambassador, continuing to establish relationships with external partners and giving broad advice but not serving as the actual game lead director/designer. Do you not constantly feel there are a ton of undercooked ideas in the franchise? Nothing seems to get done on time. Look at the fact that the apparent new sounds aren't even in GT6 day one. The damage under delivers, the online under delivers, cool ideas like Top Gear, the course editor and rain/weather felt half done in GT5. Remember that huge list of things they wanted for GT5? Things like the livery editor. What happened there? These problems come from a lack of direction and management. I'm sure there is someone in the GT team with the passion to take the reigns full time and push the series forward with a more focused vision

Reviews are what I expected. I dont really mind that GT has not changed much. But they do need to improve the engine sounds soon.

Cant wait for my copy tomorrow

They needed to improve the engine sounds since GT3. Also disappointed to hear the A.I. hasn't improved either. PD needs to stop skimping on those two things.

Oh no, horrible game because some random review site gave it a 6.

Edit: FYI, they scored Forza 7/10 on next gen hardware.

Regardless of the metacritic this ends up with, I seriously doubt this will be inferior to GT5, specially in the state the game was at release which is the version the scores were based on. The game obviously fixes A LOT of the issues that plagued the prequel.

Well I don't know what to think of the average score. I mean this game is clearly superior to its predecessors and probably the better deal than the competition which was released only a couple of weeks ago.
Nonetheless, I look forward to this game.

As much as I loved GT5 with my Logitech wheel on my ironing board, I'll wait for GT7 on PS4. I hope MotorStorm will come first though.

I agree completely with that. It seems he's constantly throwing neat ideas into the mix but not finishing them, then moves on to something new.

Meanwhile the core experience - the framerate etc. isn't given the priority it deserves.

I was going to get GT6 as my last old-gen game. But the performance issues have put me off.

I agree; I think scaling back their ambition in terms of content and putting their efforts into addressing the much-documented flaws should be their first intention for GT7. I can't believe that re-recording the sounds would be a huge effort as far as the whole production goes.

I don't think there needs to be twenty-something Subaru Imprezas or Nissan Skylines. Have two of each, bring the number of vehicles down to 300, say, and concentrate on the little ways which make GT still feel dated.

Martin Robinson gave it a 9? I'm surprised.

I don't usually agree with him but I gained a lot of respect for him for having the balls to call out Codemasters for their despicable F1 2013 and at least it seems that he knows and likes racing games, which is a rare commodity in gaming media...

I'm curious how Polyphony Digital has managed to use the same tire squeel sample since Gran Turismo 3 without getting called out on it? It drives me insane.

Oh they know, it's been people's main complaint besides the robotic A.I., guess PD just doesn't care on improving those two aspects.

Most of the reviews are fine, called most of the problems that most of GT fans wants to be fixed.

But the VideoGamer review is ridiculous is not even a proper review to begin with.

It’s disgusting.

Hehe sorry but that is not Swedish, change it por favor.

This is very much how gt5 was received, averaged it didn't blow the doors off but the reviews were extremely mixed with some extremely positive reviews from major sites ie euro gamer included. Interesting to see polygon react to this.

Sounds fucking great, downloading as we speak - 99%

Reading this:

My first time on the track was a disaster. I hit the wall three times. I spent more time off the track than on it. I even wound up driving the wrong way at one point. My lack of digital driving skills is without question. Yet, here I am reviewing Gran Turismo 6

http://venturebeat.com/2013/12/06/gran-turismo-6-review/

After reading this:

at the foot of Paddock Hill Bend you can feel the suspension load and compress before you make the ascent to Druids hairpin, and the downhill run to Graham Hill Bend provides a master-class in how to settle an unhappy car. Out into the Kent woods, the crests and cambers of Hawthorn, Westfield and Dingle Dell - a trilogy of right-handers that are best approached as one clean swoop - inspire balletic efforts conducted through springs, dampers and deft pedal-work. It's exquisite stuff.

The communication of weight, and of weight transfer, is where Gran Turismo 6 excels

Looks decent, seems to me looking at reviews fans of racing games are scoring it higher and non fans lower seems fair enough to me. Not everyone likes a good racer so it's nice to see varying opinions. I'd likely base my purchasing decision on the fans they tend to have more experience of the genre. Sadly I won't be buying it, no point with my new ps4. Let's hope they make a ps4 game soon.

The amount of content is just insane, but honestly do we need n-versions of a car ? does it need the 03/05/09 editions of relatively inconsequential cars. And stuff like creating a night sky simulation etc. are nice but that time is better spent improving core aspects of a game.

Man, that's quite some contrast.

Still, the first review is an interesting perspective. I'd like to read more reviews from people that don't like/ understand the genre they're reviewing.

My review of Final Fantasy 7: "It's a fucking JRPG. 3/10".
