Are the compression artifacts in this from the source?
It's kind of silly to do an IQ comparison with JPG compression staring you in the face. I mean, the ranking is still obvious, but particularly the PC shot (and also PS4) could look even cleaner without the compression.

BF4 released at 900p on the ps4 and 720p on the xbox one so I'm not certain about any sort of forced parity - i think it's just a coincidence brought on by games rushing for launch.

It's also worth pointing out that the multiplayer in Ghosts shipped at 1080p on the PS4 and BF4 shipped at a higher resolution as well. So, there definitely doesn't seem to be any forced parity with on disc content.

"ability to run Black Flag at 60fps is a tantalising prospect - and something that is only possible on PC, resulting in a smoother, far more fluid experience than on console" "

I should just get me one of those Steambox thigamajigs so I can point and laugh.

Performance: I’m not dismissing raw performance. I’m stating – as I have stated from the beginning – that the performance delta between the two platforms is not as great as the raw numbers lead the average consumer to believe. There are things about our system architecture not fully understood, and there are things about theirs as well, that bring the two systems into balance.

People DO understand that Microsoft has some of the smartest graphics programmers IN THE WORLD. We CREATED DirectX, the standard API’s that everyone programs against. So while people laude Sony for their HW skills, do you really think we don’t know how to build a system optimized for maximizing graphics for programmers? Seriously? There is no way we’re giving up a 30%+ advantage to Sony. And ANYONE who has seen both systems running could say there are great looking games on both systems. If there was really huge performance difference – it would be obvious.

I get a ton of hate for saying this – but it’s been the same EVERY generation. Sony claims more power, they did it with Cell, they did it with Emotion Engine, and they are doing it again. And, in the end, games on our system looked the same or better.

I’m not saying they haven’t built a good system – I’m merely saying that anyone who wants to die on their sword over this 30%+ power advantage are going to be fighting an uphill battle over the next 10 years…

I really don't appreciate the author sticking this inflammatory statement in at the end:

Console is not automatically inferior to PC graphics experience. It's becoming tiring going on internet gaming sites and seeing this statement almost as if to laugh at console people. I will not regret buying a PS4 and people shouldn't be trying to convert others to PC instead. I don't understand why he talks about PC being better value. It's almost like he has done no research into what powerful graphics Sony stuck into PS4 for $399.99:

I'm not trying to say that PC is worse/better than PS4, only an alternative.

Agreed. Why can't PC gamers just shut up already? It's getting so annoying having them shit up every graphics thread saying that their platform is superior. NOBODY CARES OK? I wish it was bannable already.

/ontopic LMAO @ The XBone and WiiU. Magic upscaler doing it's work I see haha. Also good on DF for putting n-fans in their place and saying that WiiU isn't a next-gen console. They need to knock it off with that crap hahahaha

Console is not automatically inferior to PC graphics experience..

well it is in this game

are you arguing 30fps vs 60 fps(with better anti-aliasing and HBAO+) ? and you don't need that $650 card to play AC4 in 60 fps. and oh you can't play AC4 multiplayer on PS4 if you only spend $399.

After hearing the reports, I am glad that I didn't buy Assassin Creed VI at full price yesterday.

Yikes. Worse perfomance than last-gen?

Did Ubisoft outsource the Wii-U port?

If I recall correctly I think that Ubisoft outsource both the Assassin Creed VI and Watch_Dog port.

I know that the Wii U version of Batman Arkham Origin was outsourced.

I will say that it's a shame that the Wii U version has performance issues, because it actually looks pretty good. It seems pretty obvious that its version got the least attention.

Well 900p -> 1080p is a difference of 44% pixel count

But PS4 version also has a more stable if not far more stable framerate

Oh and actually has AA or at least much improved AA

I see what you did there

Wow those Xbox One screens. Puts me in a mood to go to The Sharper Image and buy every season of JAG on DVD.

And the Wii U.....Ubisoft somehow got Activision to port Blur to it.

So at this point will MS ever get rid of the sharpening filter?

I can't foresee a turn of events that would make them unless like a #NoPS4DRM campaign starts for it

Some people thought the shitty crushed black and jacked up contrast on x360 games were awesome, so much pop, so MS decided to double down on the Xbone.

They brought over the 360's gamma curve and must of been worried enough about blurriness complaints from upscaling so they threw a sharpening filter on top of it. Which just goes to show they knew most games wouldn't be 1080p on their system.

More on the 360's gamma curve.

Let's see.
(1920*1080) / (1600*900) = 1.44
1.84 TF / 1.31 TF = 1.40

Hmm. It seems like the performance delta is greater than the raw numbers would lead one to believe. (Of course, that's disregarding the 2x advantage in ROPs, which is the likely cause)

MS PR is not going to live down the bs statements they were making leading up to this launch for the rest of the gen

You've got to be kidding. You say PC players shouldn't bash consoles for their weaker hardware but then go on to bash the Xbox One and Wii U for not performing as well as PS4? You're a total hypocrite.

Really nice to see the PS4 delivering 1080p in most games with a good frame-rate to go with it.
X1 once again delivering worse performance even at a lower resolution.
Don't even know what to say about the WiiU version though I was kinda expecting it since it already struggled with AC3, the cpu is a huge bottleneck for games with lots of npcs because of all the AIs.

MSAA still so best, even DF can't deny it:
Regular ass MSAA sucks simply due to lack of alpha coverage. If you add support for that it's no longer MSAA, really.

I don't understand the popularity.

Some of the post process solutions (SMAA) can look quite nice without impacting performance. Even without a performance hit I wouldn't use MSAA.

Sgssaa, txaa, and ssaa are all superior, but slower, options.

X1 version confirmed the best, it pops out more than the others.

They mention sub-pixel crawl that is unavoidable unless running PC with better AA solutions. Unless you aren't talking about flickering due to aliasing.

Have to say I'm pleasantly surprised how closely the PS4 version matches up to PC in this comparison.

Why is no one talking about that weird shimmering shit that goes on in the Ps4 version when the camera is moved? This was really noticeable to me, and looks nasty. When the camera doesn't move it looks fantastic, as this doesn't happen.

Is it only me that see's this? It's not present on any other PS4 game, so it is not my TV.

This is Digital Foundry who captured 720p screens of PC games for proper comparison for a large portion of last gen.

This, and between the wife and me we have over 50 hours and I have not seen or experienced anything they speak of. Don't doubt that the PS4 version is better, but I haven't had to redo anu missions on Wii U due to framerate or graphical issue or control issues. Frankly I have started to feel like Digital Foundry can be completely ignored because it has never matched my own experiences on any system.

I've had frame drops when I have 10 guards chasing me at once, but it's a fairly solid 30fps throughout.

The only gripe I have is the opening area of the game, it looked fugly with some massively blown out colors.

This is my experience with the game too. I just reached the conclusion that I'm blind. Or my beamer is broken.

That's a strange definition. Methods like alpha-to-coverage have existed for over a decade, and no one calls MSAA with alpha-to-coverage "not MSAA".

The main point is that more samples per pixel > trying to guess an edge from a low sample count. And of course, the most significant issue with the latter doesn't even show up in still images.

Yeesh Nintendo, forget about the WiiU being a cheap alternative for playing multiplats. Right now that's the PS3 or the 360. Also surprising that the XBO version both looks and performs worse than the PS4 version, the raw power gap is clearly being exacerbated by architectural flaws as well. The upscaler should not be degrading image quality to that degree.

I've played AC4 for 20+ hours and I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm going to be looking for it next time I boot it up, though.

Of course, but few games implement anything like that on foliage so using MSAA produces awful results on such assets. I really dislike the way it looks most of the time.

To be fair, I play games on my plasma exclusively so most post solutions produce perfectly acceptable results due to both viewing distance and subpixel differences. Stuff like fxaa looks good on the Kuro but awful on my LCD monitor. MSAA does produce smooth lines, but if the game doesn't support any sort of alpha coverage then you end up with a lot of ugly foliage.
