Polygon: Why Spike is hitting the reset button on its video game awards

Polygon has a lengthy write-up on how they're changing the VGX this year.

There are some news excerpts in here too.

Polygon said:
"People love to hate on us," Keighley said in a recent interview with Polygon. "'It's always over-commercialized. It's so Hollywood and it's not for us.' So what we said this year was, let's try something completely different. We're giving the show exactly what gamers have told us they want, which is more content, more news, more developers on stage, more awards."
Polygon said:
"We used to try and force [TV and Gamer audiences] together. This year we are trying to say we have the show for the core audience, which is the streaming show on Saturday, and then for the more mainstream viewers there is an hour television show you can watch on Spike on Monday which is going to give you the highlights. You may not want to see a ten minute demo from [Double Fine's Tim] Schafer on the livestream, but you might be interested in getting his news and seeing a minute of it on Monday."
Polygon said:
Saturday's show kicks-off at 6 p.m. ET and will include extended demos of yet-to-be-released games, interviews, premieres of new trailers, a live performance of the music of Grand Theft Auto 5 and, of course, the awards.
Polygon said:
This year the show's winners were told ahead of time they won so the winners could create their own acceptance videos.

...

"Game making is such a collaborative effort," Keighley said. "It's not always fair that just one person is up on stage accepting the awards. So we're going to have all of these pieces throughout the day that will come from all of the winners. You'll see those running in the lead up to the show, inside the show and we will be doing game of the year as a live acceptance as well."
Polygon said:
Keighely says that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony will each have a presence at the show and that folks like Rockstar Games are flying the entire Rockstar North development team into LA from Edinburgh, Scotland for the show.
Polygon said:
"People across the industry are really supporting us," he said. "We have all of these publishers signing up and saying, ‘Hey, we believe in this show and what you have built at Viacom and want to continue to support you.'

"This is a drastically different show than we have ever done before. I think people will be pretty surprised when they see the show and how we're supporting it."

Well now the "gamers" have to step up and actually watch this shit or they'll be forced to go right back to that other format or give up entirely.

To give their Game of the Year acceptance speech probably.

Probably part of why we can watch through Steam!
It's not a live TV event anymore though.
And may not have been very receptive afterall. It's a kind of game focus that's innately more for US, while I imagine the mass market doesn't care, only in it for CoD/BF or whatever.

I actually applaud this new format.
Letting the award winners accept via video is a novel approach and should ensure more of them get recognized.
The fact that all of Rockstar North is being flown out to VGX should remove all doubt as to what game is winning Game of the Year for its live acceptance.

Thank you for posting and highlighting fellow GAFfer.

I'm going to see it live while checking the upcoming OT tomorrow, that's for sure.

yeah spotted this earlier, seems like the rockstar guys are taking goty home

Sounds good. Hopefully people are going to watch. People have been assholes when it comes to the shows. I don't know what they expected with it being on Spike, they pretty much had to have all the other shit.

Now we are pretty much just getting an extra E3 (which is great!). Hopefully it works out for them though.

They say shit like this every year, and every year it ends up being only slightly less embarrassing than it was last year. Fool me once, etc.

I'll catch the highlights on gaf, not going to waste my time again on this.

Hope they/we do...

I kind of wonder if Rockstar is going to reveal something (highly unlikely). Or maybe they all flew out there to accept their award!

The reason why TLoU should get that award is cause its a new ip, its amazing in every aspect from the music, to the story and characters. Where as the GTA franchise has already won this award in the past already.

Just don't see the logic for it winning this time, but not up to me. Still disappointed.

Will watch, although GTA 5 winning game of the year would make me sad. The Last of Us, Super Mario 3D World and Tomb Raider are my 3 favorite games of the year.

I don't understand GTA, its fun but the story and writing gets so much praise yet I find it super forceful, like they want to be the HBO of video games but they don't understand subtlety and have to beat you over the head with everything.

Would love to see some more rpgs announced at the show.

well so we already know the GOTY ... too bad TLOU won't be getting it

The fact they are actually taking this one off TV at least suggests a change in tone. I'm sure the announcements will dissapoint as always, but at least the filler content should be game-related.

I'm sorry Rockstar, you'll be going there for many awards, but not for the GOTY <3

No wonder they are doing this. I've watched it last year and was wondering the whole time if I was watching a video game award event or some firework stuntman bullshit.

I hope they don't keep giving away most of the awards unceremoniously on the red carpet. That was so bad in the past.

Sony appealing to core gamers, Nintendo in desperate need of core gamers, and now VGX is trying to appeal to the core gamers.
Microsoft is the only one still going for the casuals.

I know how this is going to play out.

Both GTAV and The Last of Us are nominated for "Game of the Year" and "Action Adventure Game of the Year".

GTAV will unfortunately receive GotY, but TLoU will win AAGotY. Can someone explain to me how the hell that is even possible?

Looks like GTA V got GOTY lol

Well deserved of course!

I agree they will win. Maybe TLOU will be a surprise winner but I doubt it.

and I disagree that they deserve it.

It's an amazing city they have built.

But...the controls are still clunky. The side missions are mostly miss rather than hit. It's the worst writing in a Rockstar game that I can remember. And GTA Online is a major disappointment, mainly again, because of its crap controls.

Super Mario 3D World, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Assassins Creed 4, DOTA 2, Fire Emblem, and A Link Between Worlds were all superior games IMO.
