So, I logged on to my PS4, went to the What's New feed and noticed ads for Warframe and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in between my trophies and stuff.

German PSN, PS+ sub.

Not sure what to think. Thoughts?

Never been on the What's New tab, will probably continue to avoid it then.

Will be fine as long as they keep the ads off the main strip.

I'm ok with this as long as it is under the "what's new" tab, and not in the dashboard itself.

Actually i would like it if the ad for the trailer would actually bring me to the trailer instead of the facebook page of the movie.

I'll get upset when it's for Taco Bell or something that I can't click on and get on the PS Store.

This will definitely happen within the next two years I think.

I had ads in there from day one. I think the one I've seen most often is for The Playroom.

If they're kept within the What's New sub menu it's not too bad.

Edit: not day one of PS4 but the first day the What's New thing was turned on.

Yeah, there's been ads in my activity feed since launch.

Insert "But I'm paying for PS+, I shouldnt see ads" complaint here. Meh. It's not all that egregious yet.

This was already happening on the PS3. The same ad is under What's new section on the PS3.

Edit: In fact there are ads for Philips razors, very media related i guess...

If the money made is used to fund the platform I don't have an issue with ads.Long as it is just things I can easily scroll past.

As long as they keep the adds to Games, Movie Trailers and Music I will be fine with it. But if they start advertising soft drinks, fast food etc I can see me getting annoyed with it.

Sony would never do this. They would never implement microtransactions. They would never charge for multiplayer. Nope, not hearing it. They're "For The Players", remember.

Warframe is a game, on the PS Store. Don't have an issue with this.

I can't imagine they have anything in the PS Store of a new film, unless they started to put up trailers or something. So I don't like that, unless they do have trailers. In which case, whatever. It's in the PS Store. Fine by me.

It's not car insurance or a telephone company. So, not a huge deal for me. That was my problem with the 360, always saw Telus ads on there. Ugg.

This whiffs of try hard.

And it doesn't bother me really. I put up with years and years of adverts all over my Xbox 360. I think the last time I went on it, there was more adverts on my home page than actual stuff belonging to me.

Yes, 360 still has that garbage. And the Sony PS3 store still has Axe ads etc. So far the PS4 store hasn't had anything that bad.

That's incorrect. Go read the Xbox complaint threads and you'll see people complaining about content ads.

This was and still is something on the PS3. Nobody should be surprised by this and trying to use this as console war bullshit is pathetic.

I don't remember them saying the microtransactions bit?

But yeah it's been pretty clear the "focusing on gamers" facade has been pretty transparent even though it's managed to penetrate PS4 reviews and console warriors. Verge review is still very cringeworthy. Just looking at the effect though, it's clear how well it's worked. Sony marketing kicked it up a notch.

Never read it either, but I assumed it meant there's a place called Smaug and it gets destroyed.

You don't need to have read the book to know that Smaug is a dragon and desolation means destruction.

I absolutely detest ads being forced onto a platform I already paid tons of money for through an online service I'm paying extra for. I can't stand it.

However, as long as
a) The ads don't autoplay video or music AND
b) The ads are confined to the 'what's new' section
then I can live with this.

If that's where the ads stay, I have no issue with this. It was actually somewhat nice on PS3's What's New to see trailers and such that I never would have checked out otherwise. To Sony's credit, 9/10 of the stuff they advertise for is relevant to my experience on the console itself (games/movies/promos).

No doubt though, it's a fine line and a slippery slope.

Isn't that exactly what the what's New feed is for?... You hand it on the PS3 too. It's telling you what's New on the PSN Store.

If you were seeing McDonald's ads then I'd worry.

How is it a facade when they came out with the cheapest, most powerful, and developer friendly console?

Can you set your console to boot into something other than the "What's New" section? What boot options are there in general? I dislike that every time I boot up my PS3 I'm greeted with an SingStar ad.

I think that's the name of the Dragon and the destruction its done. Even without context it sounds really cool.

Yes... mine has been booting on my games since forever. Search in the options. Not sure what it is offhand.

PS4 starts on the disc too. Don't remember if it was default or not.
