Still waiting for a home version of Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder.

I wonder if M2 could actually pull off a System 32 game with stereoscopic 3D at full speed on 3DS.

I hope we get Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 eventually.
Same with Streets of Rage 2..... and 3.

In a perfect world, they would just be like: "Hey GUYS. 3D LANDSTALKER. Yeah. Let's make that!"

Yeah, 3D Landstalker would actually make the game playable. Those platforming bits were terrible when you can't see where in the pseudo 3D space the platforms are...

Galaxy Force II is nails. Not sure if that's a good thing yet. Could be the 3D screwing with my eyes; it warps my depth perception on this game (irony).

First SoR was a pure design and technical choice ... since they were building the gigadrive engine. SoR 2 had scrolling elements that would have taken too long to figure out for 3D.

Now with their experience, they seem confident SoR2 can be done. ( interesting read on the SEGA Blog).
Didn't SOR2 have stages where the background scrolled FASTER than the foreground? That has to be a recipe for headaches in 3D.

And the things M2 put into the Staff Credits are pretty damn funny!

They better keep this for the international localizations. I never thought Benny Hill comedy could invade the inter-stage set from After Burner!

Landstalker would have me jumping for joy, considering how difficult yet rewarding its move into 3D would be. Plus, more people get to hear Takenouchi's ridiculous music.

I picked up Super Hang-On earlier today and I realized there's no original mode. I loved original mode on my Mega Drive II. I just read this game's article on Sega's blog and they state this much, so it's my fault for not checking before, but I really wish they'd included both arcade and original mode.

I liked Original mode. I remember crashing on purpose in the first race, then they'd give you $400 to get repairs. But if you didn't, you'd start the next race with a broken bike, and you'd get another $400 in about 30 seconds. I did this over and over until I could buy everything to make the best bike possible. Took forever, but hey.

I'd love it too but I'm not sure isometric 3D can be translated to stereoscopic 3D, they will have perspective problems etc. Now Dark Savior...

Out Run 3D confirmed
on Master System

I didn't get to post earlier, but as a surprise <and to make me feel better about losing my cat that day> my wife said it would be ok to get a new 3DS XL at Target if they had them in stock... so I'm back in business after only a couple of days with a broken one. Shinobi III and Streets of Rage are so damn good. :D

Actually, speaking of Isometric Games, time to do something crazy!

Hell, you could use the touch screen as a trackball. Rad Mobile and Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder were on the same system too.

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
Holy shit. Expert Mode in 3D Shinobi III makes it essentially a whole new game. A better game, even. Having dedicated buttons for blocking and melee feels like the way the game SHOULD have been played if not for the limitations of the Genesis controller.

really enjoying Shinobi 3 presentation-wise, but the button layout here is pissing me off more than most. Too many buttons, layout feels unnatural, and I get confused a lot when my muscle memory tries to kick in. I miss the huge ol' Genesis pads :( This 3DS control pad is not made for adults!

do you have a circle pad pro? even for non circle pad games, i really find it makes a huge difference if comfort level is top priority.

Was really in the mood to play Shinobi last night but my 3DS XL kept turning off suddenly after a minute or so of turning it on... this has never happened before and I don't know what could be wrong...

This is the worst time it could die on me, I want to play my Sega Classics :(

Hopefully I can figure out what's wrong with it today and fix it, cause I can't send it to Nintendo for repair (it's imported).

Bought Ecco from Brazil eShop (had some remnant funds there from long ago), and that completes my duty for Series 1. Sorry Altered Beast, to me you're the black sheep of this collection.

Gave the game a quick spin, was a little underwhelmed by the 3D, and didn't really feel like playing the game for some reason. In hindsight, I might have enjoyed Altered Beast more, at least it has semi-naked men in it, haha.

I came to post that I played through the majority of Shinobi 3 on my XL and found it rather uncomfortable after a while. I thought about whether a 2DS would be more comfortable, but then I remembered that the whole point of these is the 3D. Perhaps the CPP is the solution to my problems, thanks.

Wow, I didn't know Expert Mode did that. This is amazing. I just now made the connection that the POW item also gives you the big sword slash because of this.

I'd kill for Virtual Racing... I only played the Mega Drive version (that tall cartridge!), but always wished to play the arcade or the 32x one.

It was perhaps the very first game that gave me a true sense of speed and "physical mass" to the game world. Not surprising since it was the first polygonal 3D game I played.

Fidelity is key. Even M2 VC on 3DS is good enough. One for convenience. Two, for cost. Three, to show support.
Do we have any indication of how they're doing in the west? I'm also buying some titles I already own the originals of just to show support. I really want them to bring that second batch over too.

3D Sonic is in the #1 spot in US eShop Best Sellers list (now called "On Everyone's List" or something), and Space Harrier and Altered Beast are on the list too. So at least these three titles are doing very well, and they were released early in the series, so hopefully we'll see some of the latter released titles on the list later on. Streets of Rage probably has the best chance of making it to the charts.

I fixed the issue I had yesterday with my 3DS when it was turning off on its own (which looking around the internet seems not to be uncommon). Luckily the fix was easy, just unscrew the two screws on the back cover of the 3DS XL and add some paper to the side of the battery and between it and the cover to hold it in place.

I had a great time playing SEGA 3D Classics tonight. It was a perfect setting; dark room with faint ambient light, 3DS XL with headphones, volume and 3D set to max and brightness to 4, a cup of hot ginger and cinnamon tea (which I totally forgot about once I started playing),
a couple of pipe bowls of fine cannabis
, and a bunch of masterful classic game remastered in 3D by the M2 Gods.

Started with Shinobi 3. I can't stress how much I love the music and the mood in this level (the way this guy plays the game puts me to shame), and there's a section before the boss where you hang-on to a long conveyor belt on the ceiling allowing you to focus on the parallax in the background (which M2 talk about it at length in the interview, explaining how the original programmers used programming tricks to fake 2 separately moving bg layers on Genesis hardware), and it looks glorious in 3D.

After a while of playing Shinobi I moved to Super Hang-On... I still suck at this game, but playing it feels oh so good and I love this music track. I'm totally cheating and playing it on the easiest settings (which I'm doing with all the arcade games, initially, otherwise I fear never getting around to seeing them in their entirety judging by how rarely I've been playing games in recent years, and my low threshold for failing). I think the best visual settings for the game are:

Game Version: Mini-Ride On Type
Screen Size: First option (the only other valid option is the 2nd option. The 3rd and 4th distort the beautiful sprites; blasphemous!)
Moving Cabinet: Two notches to the right (even though it would be tilting in the opposite direction of your steering, I think it works better because it sort of mimics the horizon tilting if you were on a real bike)

Take it from me, someone who has never played Super Hang-On in the arcades :p

Then I played some Space Harrier. This is my least favorite of the arcade games (never played it before the 3DS), but still a fun game to play, especially if you resist the temptation to hold the button for rapid fire and attempt to actually time your shots to the enemy waves.

I was going to call it quits after Space Harrier, when I looked at the icon for Galaxy Force II and thought "hmm, should I play it?" ... "Yeah", and oh boy am I glad I did! I posted earlier in the thread that I felt a little underwhelmed after my first time playing it last week, which I partially attributed to being overhyped from your impressions, but playing it today was a revelation; it's the most impressive gaming spectacle I've experienced in a long time, if not ever. This is my next gen.

I think my initial "dislike" to the game's visuals was due to two reasons; the first stage is kinda drab looking and visually feels busy/confusing, and the second lava stage while beautiful, doesn't have much going on besides those "fire dragons" (which I didn't know you could shoot and kill until today!), and aren't as visually pleasing as the latter stages for me, and secondly my eyes probably needed some time to adjust to the game's intense 3D visuals. The third stage (Plant world) blew me away; the environment is beautifully designed, colored and textured, with so much shit going on all at once. It's blissfully mind blowing in 3D... I was shouting "Wow!" and "OMG" all the way through. Yep, this is definitely a strong contender to having the best 3D on the 3DS. You guys weren't exaggerating.

And this game is going to make me get a Circle Pad Pro XL... I had one for my launch 3DS, but I sold it with the system when I got the XL and have been resisting letting Nintendo gorge me to pay again for the accessory. But now I really want to control the throttle in GFII with the second stick instead of the shoulder buttons.

This is a picture of my 3D Classics folder. The games are not sorted in a logical or deliberate manner.

I noticed several of you using the zoomed out view settings for the icons. I like to use the zoomed in one so that I can fully see the artwork.

I knew Malkland would become my favorite planet as soon as I rocketed out of the launch bay, listening to the full music track that K. Hayashi originally intended, all while firing at those guppies in the lake before entering a Roger Dean-like landscape of horrors. There's just so much going on! Glad to hear you got the machine fixed—playing these games with that set-up must be glorious.

Reached the 4th stage in 3D Altered Beast, the stage where you're normally the Tiger.

Even though Sega added parallax scrolling layers to the MD/Gen port that weren't present in the arcade, there was no parallax in the 4th level in the console version.

Despite M2 saying in the interview that they added yet more layers to 3D Altered Beast, there are still none on the 4th level.

YO: Multi-layer scrolling effects were added when the arcade version was ported to the MegaDrive, and when we ported this version to the GigaDrive, we wound up adding even more. (laughs)

I love the icons too!

But depends in the system I'm using. For my XL that has all my content (like a hundred things) I have to go small...I don't like folders.

For my J-3DS I give the nine games their own second page...with extra slots for the forthcoming games.

For my dedicated Sega 3D Classics 2DS they are big and bold and in line for maximum pleasure.

I've got another 2DS with some of the titles just mixed in...I use that for my two-player games. I'll be playing Streets of Rage with my brother this weekend when he visits. We usually play brawlers on VC over the holidays so can't wait to try the local SoR!

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I got a $20 eShop card for Christmas (among other things, obviously.) I'm thinking I should buy 2 more 3D Classics games with it. Right now, I have:

Shinobi III
Super Hang On
dat Sonic

I'm leaning towards buying Galaxy Force II and Space Harrier. But out of curiosity, is Ecco the Dolphin any good? I've never played it, and I know the Sega CD version has more levels, so I'm not sure I should even care about buying it here.

I played Ecco originally on the Mega Drive and have always been a fan of the franchise (dat Dreamcast game!), and I was excited that it was included in the 3D Classics... but I haven't been dying to play it and I didn't buy it until today... and I felt a little underwhelmed when I gave it a quick whirl. It doesn't look or feel as good as I remember it (even though it looks better than how I played it; on a dingy CRT with composite cables)... Can't judge the game proper until I actually sit down and play it for a length of time (which I haven't done since the original and my memory is terrible).

Why aren't you considering Streets of Rage?

Holy moly, Space Harrier feels great! Played through it a few times and I'm still finding myself surprised by the 3D effects on certain sprites.

More of this needs to happen with other legendary titles and Arrow Flash, only because I want to see that giant ship crash in 3D. :D

Turbo OutRun fans, best official home version was made for FM Towns.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOXn6pOAni0

It could be played on both an FM Towns computer and an FM Towns Marty console (these shared the same graphics hardware not unlike a Commodore Amiga 1200 computer and Amiga CD32 console which both had AGA graphics) but Turbo OutRun runs better on FM Towns computers with the 486SX 33 MHz. I believe most computer & console models shipped with a 386SX 16 Mhz.

FM Towns' color & sprite capabilities went far beyond standard IBM compatible Intel-based PCs, however..

Graphics

The FM Towns featured video modes ranging from 320×200 to 640×480, with 16 to 32,768 simultaneous colours out of a possible 4096 to 16.7 million (depending on the video mode); most of these video modes had two memory pages, and it allowed the use of up to 1024 sprites of 16×16 pixels each. It also had a built-in font ROM for the display of kanji characters.
One unique feature of the FM Towns system was the ability to overlay different video modes; for example, the 320×200 video with 32,768 colours could be overlaid with a 640×480 mode using 16 colours, which allowed games to combine high-colour graphics with high-resolution kanji text.

No hardware scaling, though.
