Times your mind was actually blown by a video game

The first one I can remember: Beating the first 3 stages of Darkwing Duck, thinking the game would either take me to the final level or finish, and unlocking the next three. I was blown away, in all honesty, that there was more game to play.

I was six years old at the time,

"BUT MOM, I JUST CAME FLYING OUT OF A FUCKING PIPE IN 3D!"

Whoa. At six years old?

I remember specifically calling over my Mom to look at how amazing it was... "Yeah it's great Andrew... whatever". "BUT MOM, I JUST CAME FLYING OUT OF A FUCKING PIPE IN 3D!
Ha, I just pictured a 6-year-old actually saying this. XD

For me, seeing the following at Toys "R" Us had to be the most mind-blowing thing I had seen at the time:

Everything was so solid, so real! Mario Kart 64 was the game that made me decide I absolutely had to have a Nintendo 64 that Christmas. My brothers and I campaigned long and hard for it, since we had just received a SNES the previous Christmas. I was in fifth- or sixth-grade at the time.

Seeing the characters all animated on the Character Select screen was just... it was just...

Had to be REMake for me. The graphics for that was the best I've ever seen, and it just completely fucking scared the shit out of me. Just watching the intro where the zombie wakes up and gets shot gave me nightmares.

I honestly miss being that susceptible to horror.

There are many, many examples but some of my favorites:

- The scope of Baldur's Gate 2. The world in that game felt like it was truly alive. I wanted to meet more characters and go on more quests and I never wanted it to stop.

- Half Life 2 is one of the most immersive games I have ever played. When I got off that train I truly felt like I had just arrived in a horribly dystopian city. The pacing in HL2 is, imo, unmatched to this day. The game never lets up. The sense of urgency is real and very much a threat. The way the narrative is carried out was also mindblowing at the time and one of the reasons why the game was so immersive.

GTA5, when I sniped an
airplane out of the sky
and then followed the thing for about 2 minutes on a motorbike. Every element of that mission, the music, the setup, the player switching between characters. All aspects of it said to me this is next level fucking cinematic gameplay and storytelling, I was blown the fuck away.

Journey - for obvious reasons - specifically the end.

Okami HD - multiple times from the beauty.

Killzone SF - just the graphics / environments / concepts - specifically the
gravity wells
on mission 8 I think - what a motherfucking crazy goddamn setup.

Yea, that blew my fucking mind what I played the game.

The best part is how half of the game's dialogue has this eerie vibe as though everyone is familiar with you, leading to a conspiracy that centers on you, totally foreshadowing something or other but remaining vague enough to keep you wondering. All the way up to the final cutscene you're wondering what the fuck was up with Sasha and Alden and the ways they interacted with you.

ten seconds later, and everything makes sense

Haha, that's not what I actually said, but I imagine it was with the same level of enthusiasm.

  • Pole Position for Atari - So this is a video game?? wow.
  • Dragon Warrior 4 - Wow, this game is huge, and I can fly in an airship??!!
  • Star Fox - Wow, it is 3D ... coooooool.
  • Descent (I think ... it was a demo on the computer) - Flying in any direction, including out of the atmosphere into space!!??
  • Super Mario 64 - This is so real 3D! I can go anywhere!
  • Legend of Zelda: OoT - Hyrule field is huge!
  • World of Warcraft - This atmosphere and scope are unbelievable!
  • Limbo - Finally bringing the art into video games ...
  • Xenoblade Chronicles - The world is two giant mechs/gods frozen in battle?? Whaaaaaa
  • NintendoLand (Luigi's mansion) - Asymmetric 5-player gameplay? I get it now Nintendo! Now to tell the rest of the world.

Metal Gear Solid is the first thing that came to mind.

Plugging in the controller in Port 2 to avoid Psycho Mantis's telepathy. Using cigarettes to see infrared sensor beams. Having to look at the back of the CD Jewel Case to find Meryl's codec number. Story Spoilers -
Master Miller actually being Liquid Snake the whole time, causing Solid Snake to indirectly activate the Metal Gear he'd been sent to stop. Snake being the carrier of Foxdie, explaining all of the deaths in the game.
Not to mention the cinematic, engrossing, and intense gameplay. All of it was mindblowing way back in 1998.

Still probably my favorite game with the most lasting impression on me even to this day.

Wish I could find a better .gif, but RF:Guerilla. I remember in the demo they give you a giant mech and you could just smash right through a building. I think I ejaculated.

No joke. The first time I blew the fucking head off a zombie in Resident evil.

As of recent, probably when I played thew the slaughter house in Dishonored DLC for the first time. I don't want to spoil much, but it was rather disturbing in a mind blown kind of way.

Arriving in Columbia (BioShock Infinite) was definitely the most mind-blowing moment in videogames this year. Particularly the bit where you're walking through town on your way to the raffle. The grand reveal with the statue and all of the buildings "docking," the barbershop quartet, the parade, etc. Just incredible. It was literally one line-of-sight delight after another -- every staircase you climbed, every balcony you peered over revealed some amazing new sight. I simply couldn't stop playing the game at that point. What I had intended to be a quick 10-minute peek at the game turned into a solid hour of wide-eyed wonder. It was difficult to pull myself away.

Besides all the others on this thread, I would say...

The Day/Night system on the Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal games. Even though the music doesn't sound different at night, Goldenrod City is wonderful to be at during the night.

#1 mind blown:

Downloading the shareware version of Doom on my 14.4 kb/s modem from some BBS, knowing absolutely nothing about it besides the fact that it was from the guys who made Wolfenstein 3D. Jesus Christ.

Outside of DMC, nothing grabbed my attention outside of Ninja Gaiden on Xbox. The controls were something capturing and the demo had my attention for hours.

I could probably top that by a million different games, but having a set of judges who ruled over the empire in FF was fantastic.

That's a pretty great one.

Going completely blind into an all time classic...

I've been blown away by a quite a few games since my gaming days started. One of my earlier mindblows were Monkey Island 2. Back then, it wasn't the graphics, but the whole game was just ridiculously good, and an incredible sequel to my favourite game at the time. Just seeing characters coming back for a sequel felt magic to me back then. I think it was two of the first games where I actually remembered and cared for a lot of the characters.

I remember Driver on the PS1 blowing me away. Then later, MGS and FFVII. Syphon Filter even blew me away, at first I liked that more than MGS.

The biggest mindblowjob I ever felt though, was probably GTA3 and MGS2. GTA3 just felt like a whole new world, and MGS2 had that incredible attention to detail that I'd never seen before.

Oh, and yeah, the first God of War on the PS2, and Uncharted 2 on the PS3. Some games just makes your jaw drop.

Uncharted 2, I can't remember the exact part, but where you are swinging between flag poles, it just stands out in my mind after so many years.

I have four major "Mind Blow" climaxes in my gaming life...

1.) When I first played Fallout 3. That was the first Bethesda game I had ever played and I had never experienced a world so open. I immediately fell in love with the theme, plot and franchise.

2.) Finishing Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The game was pretty good for what it was, but the videos at the end is what really made me go wow. They put a nice conclusion to the game, but kind of make you think about mankind's future.

3.) In Halo 2 when you get to play as the Arbiter. Really kind of a great plot twist and its reasons like that for Halo 2 being my favorite in the franchise.

4.) Kotor I, your Revan. Could kinda see it coming, but not really...

The credits of The Last of Us revealing that David was played by Nolan North. Plot twist of the generation right there.

Also the plot twist in Baten Kaitos was nuts.

But as far as just being impressed by technical stuff, nothing compares to Super Mario 64 when I was 12.

The Hydra boss fight was definitely one of the greatest gaming moments I've ever had as well. I remember when I impaled the Hydra on the ship's mast I was just overwhelmed by the feeling of "THIS IS SO FUCKING AWESOME".

I don't know how many people feel the same but there's also this

which stands out to me as Super Mario Sunshine's most notable map, aesthetically and in terms of the platforming to be had. I loved how giant and vertical this map was (it really felt so different to play from every other map in the series and still does) and it's beautiful to look at to boot.

Final Fantasy VII
Unreal
Virtua Fighter III
Daytona USA
Donkey Kong Country
World of Warcraft
Wii Sports

But like every other gamer on the planet, nothing was as earth-shattering as the first time I heard "it's a-me, Mario!"

Super Mario 64 is a given, but in terms of actual moments I can only confirm Bioshock once again.

oh, and Alan Wake. You know that moment when you get there.

alternatively: FF VII at the time, seeing a world outside Midgar and thinking nothing of it "eh, it's not like I'll ever leave this pla--" WORLD MAP. "what."

This game and specifically the size of the map blew me and my sister away. So much time was spent playing this game without a strategy guide. Haven't played another Zelda game since.

Man, I want an HD version of this game even more now. :(

That title screen.

Also, the very first time I played Doom on the GBA. I couldn't believe I was playing a 3D (well, sorta) game on such a tiny machine.

And I don't know if it counts, but I remember being blown away by the brightness of the GBA SP AGS 101 screen.

Nintendo Land: why? It was the first time I played a game in 1080p. Yeah, I've been missing out.

team fortress 2 started playing this game late last year. Multiplayer gaming has never felt so good. Also the first time I gamed in 60 FPS in a non-Nintendo game. Everything looks so fluid.

flipnote hatena not sure if this counts but anyways, back in November 09 when I discovered my house had wifi, the videos were amazing, and the thought of seeing the work of a community of animators in the palm of my hands felt incredible.

flying out of the windshield for the first time in gta 4 on top of that blowing my mind the fanny-pack-tastic euphoria physics not making niko fall in a flat pre-determined animation like previous gta's double blew my mind

Metal Gear Solid 2, man at that time I'd never played anything like it. The production values, the quality voice acting; just the most impressive gaming related thing I'd seen. I'll never forget seeing Ocelot getting taken over by Liquid's arm. I didn't have a single clue what the hell was going on, it was amazing.

I wouldn't necessarily call this mind blown, but I stayed pretty much radio silent on Bioshock Infinite pre-release so when I finally played it and the
whole world being pitifully racist was revealed on stage at the carnival
it really caught me completely off guard.

I had no idea the game would be going in that direction.

I recent memory, Ace Attorney 5, for plot reasons.

Just... oh man. One of the only times I can remember an event in a game's story really hitting me in the gut.
