Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

I'd go further and say that ICs are really the only weird choice, G&W and ROB both represent retro hardware that's an important part of Nintendo history. ICs on the other hand are just some random characters from a single game that's decidedly average at best.
Sakurai said he included the Ice Climbers because he wanted a character to represent the original NES. He whittled down a list of all the classic NES characters and was left with the Ice Climbers. In that context, they're not such a bizarre inclusion.

I'm of the opinion that guest characters should be historically significant gaming icons, which Snake certainly is. Regardless of his relevance to Nintendo, I'll take him over Bayonetta or The Wonderful 101 any day of the week. Snake represents Konami, Sonic represents Sega, Mega Man represents Capcom, and Pac-Man represents Namco Bandai.

I'd much rather see Simon Belmont as the Konami Rep personally or just Bomberman for Hudson(RIP).

I agree with this. Snake gets a pass with me because he is a big gaming icon, and arguably Konami's most popular character. Even without strong ties to Nintendo, he's a better choice than one-off third-party characters that have a bit more significance to Nintendo like Geno or Bayonetta (but, as it has already been corrected, The Wonderful 101 is first-party, not third-party).

I'm not too happy with the current status of the Castlevania series but nothing I can do about it.

I'm too spoiled with the GBA-DS installments and of course SCIV.

While we're (vaguely) talking about the [_____] Wars series, I'm surprised these guys have never really been talked about:

In Captain Rainbow there's the "Famicom Wars Soldiers" that represent the basic infantry unit for the Wars games, and they strike me as the sort of character that would strike Sakurai's fancy (not unlike Pokemon Trainer, Mr. Game and Watch, Wii Fit Trainer to an extent) to represent the series. A single "Famicom Soldier" or something that can call in little tanks, choppers, and so forth for backup seems very "Smash Bros." to me.

The same "realistic guns" ban that Snake had might effect them, but it'd be no less avoidable here. Or they could just make the weapons super cartoony.

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
Kojima didn't invite Sakurai to his birthday party. Snake is as good as gone.

He's a big gaming icon, but he doesn't belong in for the same reason that Master Chief or Nathan drake don't belong in. He's a big gaming icon... who is known for his games that are specifically not on Nintendo systems. Yeah, they got 1 decent port a long time ago and a really half assed port (seeing as the competing systems got 3 games in a collection for a budget price either before or around the same time), woopdedoo.

Maybe get him in Sony Smash bros 2 where he belongs. But not in smash bros where the 3rd party representation is deliberately very limited to characters who all have a history with Nintendo, except for snake.

A castlevania rep is a good idea. Either a Belmont (Julius or Simon) or Soma would probably make the most sense from castlevania.

Aren't they already represented as an assist trophy?

But he's not only on other systems. He even has one exclusive Game Boy Color game, I believe. Yeah, there are better choices that are much more significant to Nintendo, but Snake got in because his creator approached Sakurai. What's done is done, and he's special because he's the first guest character in Smash Bros. Now, all other guest characters will likely have much stricken conditions for joining the battle.

people re against a 3rd party have 2 or 3 reps but I think sonic is imp enough to have 3( tails, and robotnik). not going to happen but I love to see it

also what does it take to become a member?

They should copy Pokemon Trainer for Advance Wars

Nell is the trainer while Andy, Sami, and Max are Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard respectively.

Well there is Dual Strike's tag team mechanic. But do we really need yet another multi-character? SSB is kinda pushing it as it is with Rosaluma, IC, PT, ZSS, Zelda/Shiek & Olimar plus the speculated Diddy/Dixie team. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

Pac-Man will be taking Snake's moveset.

If any CO gets in from Advance Wars wouldn't it be Andy?

Not sure why Sami is the one always brought up.

She's the infantry commander and the one drawn holding guns, and people wanted to invent a snake-clone to still have a character with that moveset if he gets removed. That's to my knowledge the only reason Sami's ever been mentioned in smash conversations.

If Andy got in I feel like he'd rep the franchise's actual gameplay closer for his B attacks- summoning tiny units to fight. Like up-b T copter, down-b artillery, side-b a rushing attack where he clings to an APC, neutral B tank.

Don't think this'll happen though. I'll have to settle for s&p, advance wars, and golden sun only being repped by assist trophies forever.

Looking at this post makes me realise that I'd be okay with a playable Advance Wars CO surrounded by infantry sprites that plays like a heavily modified Captain Olimar. Having different sprites show up over the course of the match with different attributes would be pretty fun, I think.

I was aware of those but the actual ball & gloves themselves don't appear so like the balloon hat they are still loosely connected to the villager at best.

If my theory is correct, then Sakurai was ingenious in selecting Villager's moves. Afterall giving him the sword & shield from Find Mii wouldn't make very much sense. They picked out the precise mii moves that nobody would bat an eye at Villager having as well so he could be a 2-in-1 rep.

It's still representative of the game he comes from even if it's not a perfect match, just like Zelda using the goddess magic and virtually all of Shiek's moveset. It's certainly possible that it's to mask the Mii, but Villager having some loosely related moves like those wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Plus it has to go both ways at that point. Those moves might not be too odd for both of them, but Mii having using the tree and axe would be weird.

Sami the Snake clone
Andy the Olimar Clone

Would be dreams come true.

Instead, we will get Eagle as a Fox clone and Max the Donkey Kong clone.

I think both Snake and Simon have earned a spot in Smash, but I'm not sure if two Konami reps would be let in and in that case I'm sure Snake would be chosen before Belmont by both Konami and Sakurai due to popularity and seniority in the series.

Castlevania is fun and historically significant to Nintendo platforms.

Weird, right?

I think the point is that Konami as a company doesn't really have a unified brand as distinct as Nintendo's or Sega's in the eyes of the public. Snake and Simon represent their own franchises, not the company as a whole. If they are notable it will be because of their own games and not because of the company that owns them. Snake isn't a Konami rep, he's a Metal Gear Rep. If Simon gets in, he's not repping Konami either, but representing Castlevania.

Edit: Orrrr it could just be snake fandom. OK. Well, the argument above is how I see the situation anyway.

Simon Belmont would be amazing. It saddens me that so few people seem to want him as a playable character. He makes so much sense.

Playable Simon with Dracula as an assist trophy, Castlevania as a stage, and the series soundtrack included would elicit the same excitement and hype that Mega Man did for me.

Aside from this new lord of shadow business, I dont think castlevania was ever.. super big . So i would understand why some people may not even give a shit about a castlevania rep, never matter to them. They had metriod or maybe even don't even care about that type of game.

Classic Castlevania is nothing like Metroid and feature very different styles of platforming. Two was something of an experiment toward that end, but was the odd game out at the time.

I can just imagine the character trailer. Pit, Luigi, and Kirby see a castle and decided to explore it. After they enter, the door shuts behind them. A swarm of bats attacks them and the three are momentarily blinded. Then all the bats get blown up. The screen moves over to the shadowy figure that helped them.

"Kept you waiting, huh?"

Simon's inclusion would probably get me more excited than Mega Man's.

But I believe I've heard that Castlevania isn't considered as iconic to the NES in Japan as it was in America. Or something like that. So his chances seem pretty slim for various reasons.

vvv maybe as pachislot hehehehehehe

But actually, there's just never been that same level of demand for a Castlevania rep as there was for Mega Man. Statements about whether or not it's considered as integral a part of the NES library in Japan are just based off of various rumblings I've heard.

That is a good point.

My go to point for castlevania is symphony of the night forward. Since that is the part of the series that i give most of a crap about. My points still stands though, castlevania has never really been that big

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet

And then this theme kicks in.

This is completely baseless, but I’ve always assumed Sakurai gave Zero Suit Samus a whip as a sort of Castlevania homage. The series is always being compared to Metroid, and they both debuted in 1986.

I thought it was just a low powered version of the grapple beam that act as a whip.

Castlevania and Metroid are like PB&J and I'd love to see the two finally cross over. I'm not sure if Sakurai wants a 3rd party getting more than one character in Smash, but if ever there was an exception to be made then this would be the spot to make it.

Only if the art is by Ayami Kojima.

Well, it is a grapple beam, but I'm curious as to whether or not there's some kind of deeper inspiration behind it since it was invented for Smash Bros. and constitutes a majority of her move set.
