Artificial sharpening engaged

That only happens when a game is still sub-1080p when it hits the scaler. Well, the sharpening part at least.
Ryse is 900p and still isn't sharpened because they scale in software before the frames make it to MS's image ruiner.

Well, if he means the ecosystem with worse load times, longer installs, worse update system, worse friend systems, worse achievements viewing, worse party system and so on. Then Yea, the Xbox One version makes sense... Lol.

Hilarious that he's already coming up with excuses and get outs though. Got to wonder how Microsoft got him so damn well. Whole secret sauce hardware difference was originally orchestrated by him and his supposed 'inside sources' (probably Microsoft PR) were talked up. If you remember, he claimed he'd heard the Xbox One was more powerful. Pretty hilarious either way.

lol looking back those next gen hardware prediction/speculation threads were hilarious.

But tbh wouldn't be surprised if he is doing all this for free ..or for maybe some kind words from MS PR

Just because they redid things does not mean that the game is technically better in all respects to the PC version, as shown clearly by the lack of tessellation.

I called this would be the new talking point in another thread. There's some sort of lottery for it, right?

2K textures, less LOD, and farther draw distance > tessellation bub. I'm fine with the trade off.

I'm so torn on this game. On the one hand, I loved Tomb Raider and don't mind getting it again on PS4. On the other, $60 for a re-release and it just came out last year feels like a rip-off considering I paid around $45 on PC before it came out. But on the other other hand, it's 1080p~60, improved TressFX, updated graphics etc. But then, on the other other other hand, I prefer the old Lara to the new one...Hmm...

I love how geis seems to not actually understand what is potentially bad about unlocked frame rates and why it's not as good as locked.

The vast majority of console games run at unlocked frame rates, they are just capped with a frame limiter, even 30fps ones. Halo, COD, BF, Tomb Raider, GTA V etc etc all dip below their target frame rate and are not locked. Very few console games, especially 60fps ones, actually run at a locked framerate. So I don't know why he'd even bother to bring that up now.

Yeah locked framerate is incredibly hard to do. I mean, there will always be scenes that demand more from your GPU then others. I guess the easiest way to do it would be to make an engine that never pushes your GPU to the point of needed to slow the scene down to keep up with it, thus dropping in framerate. So you benchmark your engine at the most complex scenes, get that scene to 60fps, and never have to worry about any other scene pushing your engine any further. Giving the illusion of " locked ". That is how I would do it anyway lol.

Are we sure the dude in the video didn't just make a mistake by saying 60fps...

A few other GAF members have played it and said the same thing. EatChildren wasn't even the first person to mention it here.

Pretty amazing that they essentially took the PC version added new effects all while providing a high end PC like performance.

And at that point why wouldn't you be downsampling using the overhead and 58fps?

Locked frame-rates on PC are just as rare. There are ALWAYS tradeoffs to be had, and people all have different preferences.

Didn't the Executive Producer for Tomb Raider, Scot Amos, recently confirm it was 1080p, 30 frames on both consoles?

Source

Well... guess this is STILL running at 30 FPS on both. :p So he wouldn't exactly be lying! That powergap, lol.

Meh. Don't really care myself. Still buying this on my Xbox One over my PS4, just for the slightly better Voice Commands and the Achievements.

EDIT: Clarifying a bit on why I'm still getting it on Xbox One:

Voice Commands? Achievements? You can't be serious.

Were these first things not in relation this new version vs the last gen console versions?

There was a boobies shot someone posted in another thread. Seriously, it was a boobies shot. Top is Def Ed, bottom is PC.

Edit:

There was also some shots in the other thread posted by MaLDo comparing PC shots (with tessellation on and off) VS some shots taken from the video.

How could anyone use that as proof. Its a satire post

No, it is proof, just because of the object we are looking at is some polygon breasts does not change that.

That shit doesn't make any sense... For COD for example, 720p can affect gameplay especially when you're trying to shoot someone at a distance yet both the PS4 and XB1 version got the same score.

you are doing it wrong when you are trying to make sense out of religious zealot.

It is not much of a surprise that American gaming press has more of MS lean. They probably have a lot of friends in the industry that work at studios, studios that spent the last 8 years leading on the 360. Last gen went on for way too long. There are journalist that could have graduated High School, College, and have been in the industry for several years in the span of last gen, that's crazy.

However, they need to check that stuff at the door, because they are being looked at to be impartial. Announcing on Twitter you prefer the Xbone ecosystem, as a review editor, is not a good look. It implies he wants the Xbone version to be better, and therefore will attempt to marginalize the difference.

I think the PS4 version got a lower score, or was that another game?

Edit: Yup, confirmed above

You can spot quite clearly the lack of tessellation on the console versions and you can not make any claims on any of the other settings other than they have changed the look of the game in places and thus it is going to be hard to compare!

Lot's of advantages on next gen consoles over the PC version from 2013.

http://gearnuke.com/see-tomb-raider-definitive-edition-compares-pc-version-ultra/

An all-new Lara model created to take advantage of the power of next-gen consoles.

· Gear on Lara (necklace, climbing axe, radio, arrows) now have realistic physics.

· Lara’s head has been retopologized and increased in resolution for a higher fidelity appearance. Her head was rebuilt from scratch with an estimated 5x density improvement on features for eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, etc. All of her textures are higher resolution as well. We’ve also smoothed over edges on elbows, shoulders, and legs to give more natural features.

· Shaders and lighting have been reworked to showcase the raw physicality of Lara’s journey through sweat, mud, and blood materials and effects.

· The world has been dynamically brought to life using complex physical world simulation on trees, foliage, cloth. Additional enhancements have also been made to weather and lighting.

· All textures have been created at 4x resolution for maximum fidelity and detail.

· In-game characters, enemies, and destructibility have been enhanced for added realism.

· Subsurface scattering technology has been implemented to capture the most physically accurate lighting simulation and deliver a great sense of believability on Lara.

· Native 1080p gameplay gives outstanding visual fidelity and showcases the deadly beauty of Yamatai.

I actually personally dislike the idea of a locked 60fps in games like this. It doesn't even need to be 60fps tbh, but 60fps locked would have meant that they sacrificed visual quality and graphical features just to hold a constant 60fps at all times, even when the severe dips that would have made the difference are only very rare.

If a scene that drops the frame rate 10+fps from 60fps only happens rarely, or when there's a giant set piece explosion or whatever, I say to hell with it. Let it drop, because I'd rather a rare drop with greatly improved visuals, over greatly reduced visuals for no drops ever.

I don't know. Maybe it's the amazing online service that is Xbox Live. The innovative Kinect Sensor with its motion tracking and voice recognition capabilities. Or maybe its the slew of amazing first party and third party exclusives coming to console. I really don't understand it either......

You forgot the tag. No $3 for you, sorry.

Are you sure? Link? Also there's a lot more to the PS4 version than TressFX. There's new effects, new character designs redone textures etc. Unless there are terrible inconsistent frame rates it will be the best version.

There were Lara comparison pics in the old thread. Her changes are subjective.

And yeah there's different effects but there's also zero tesselation, AA is worse, and no 4k. That and we still have to see what kind of 60fps is it. Is it locked? It hits 60 most of the time?

If the 60fps is locked then you will be happy with either version. (Except one version can be found for $5 and the other $60)

At the end of the day, when comparing the 2 versions you have to ask yourself, did they put enough effects that they can charge 1200% extra?

This week.... This fucking week, man. The Nintendo fiasco, the Youtube shilling, and now this?! Is Gaben going to launch a space program tomorrow? At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised.
