Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

That's awesome.

Play as Toon Link? Alfonso mans the train.

But the outline...?

That hardly looks much of an outline. Even if it's an outline, it doesn't match the fighters.

Why would he have an outline anyways? ST Link didn't have one and there's no reason to give NPCs outlines considering its purpose in the first place. I'm going with what EmCee and TheLegendOfCap has said.

I'm starting to agree.

From far it looks like has the same outline as the fighters, but its only bad aliasing and shading on his part. If he has shading around his edges, low poly, and bad aliasing, leads to an "outline" looking thing.

The giveaway is his hand. Its not outlined.

So if Ridley is a stage hazard, does this mean he has a chance to be playable?

I doubt it. In the case Ridley is a stage hazard that would mean he actually interacts with the stage. In the spirit tracks case it seems who mans the train is irrelevant as they are only a background character.

Not to mention his head is hardly "outlined". If he was really outlined then that's one hella of a terrible job at rendering outlines.

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
This might also mean that Bruce Wayne will be replaced with Alfred when you play as Batman on the Wayne Manor stage.

Burn this stage with fire. Looks awful every time.

At least this proves Ridley can be both a fighter and a stage hazard!

If Toon Link was an amalgamation of the cartoon Links, I'd get this, but as we all know his moveset will completely ignore Spirit Tracks, not to mention Phantom Hourglass, Four Swords... =/

Outside of his taunts (which may or may not change, did we get any snapshots of him using the wind waker thingy?), does Toon Link have anything that only Wind Waker Link has?

Am I the only one who thinks the stage looks fine?

It'll look heaps better in motion, like all 3DS games.

3DS getting more love is a good thing. Getting one shot a week has been annoying, so three is good.

Seriously, he's not outlined.

It actually does, no kidding. Great detail.

That's something I was wondering ever since the DK arcade stage in Brawl. You played as Donkey Kong, and yet you had another Donkey Kong on that stage. Granted, that could be considered to be Cranky, but still a bit of a paradox, and I was wondering if it was an intentional one.

Ridley has been cloned to kingdom come, however - Other M Ridley, Meta Ridley and Ridley X all are clones or copies of the original. There's been games that had 2 Ridleys before - Zero Mission featured the regular one and Mecha Ridley, and let's not forget that Brawl's SSE had 2 Ridley boss fights, one of which was against Meta Ridley.

Basically, if there's one version of Ridley as a stage hazard, we might have the other version playable.

I think the game looks great personally. Then again I'm a fan of train levels in video games.

No, Spirit Tracks deserves some love too.

The thing with Ridley is that if he is playable, who would replace him as the stage hazard and play a similar function? Are we even sure that Conductor Link and Alphonso are stage hazards and not just there as the background like the Pokemon Stadium stages?

If Meta Ridley was to replace Ridley as the stage hazard, wouldn't it defeat the purpose of replacing the model to avoid confusion? Toon Link was replaced with Alphonso for that very reason so you can't really make the Ridley incarnation argument.

Toon Link's case is different, so I don't think that line of logic can be applied to any character and stage.

In terms of shading and lines, things can change during development so I wouldn't count outlines out for certain NPC either. The product isn't final and there are bound to be aesthetic changes.

Eh, not quite. Depending on what he actually does as a hazard, they'd have to have something that can replace him and do the same thing.

Master Sword and Hylian Shield, as pointed out. I suppose Sakurai considers Toon Link a representation of several incarnations of Link -- at least both Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. I wonder if it's the same with adult Link. Will he have any Ocarina of Time elements/references for example?

s I said, if Ridley is a hazard then I don't think that would mean he could be both playable and a hazard. If only flies in the background doing shit, then I can see him being both playable and/or in the background of the stage, but then, why would you have Ridley flying in the background if he is playable?

With the Toon Link train it doesn't seem whoever drives the train would directly interact with the fighters, i.e a background character. So it shouldn't be hard to just swap them if Link is around.

If the stage is designed with Ridley as a hazard in mind I really doubt they would take out the hazard for putting riddle in. I don't think stage in smash has had an actual gameplay-interference hazard change depending on who is on the stage.

Only way I could maaaaaybe see it happening is if Hazard!Ridley is Other M based, because of the stage, and the playable Ridley uses a different design, but that one is a stretch.

Mecha Ridley or Other M Ridley (since Pyrosphere is from Other M) are just as good options.
Other M Ridley has a significantly different color scheme from regular Ridley:

Note the significantly different shade in the wings - Other M's actually look like they're glowing.

Additionally, you can easily make the argument of one Ridley being smaller as the other. If playable Ridley is smaller than stage Ridley, it's obvious who is who.

Well... Zelda has Shiek and her design is based off TP. And then there's the Phantom thing which came from the ST Zelda incarnation... Although that's up to debate for the latter lol

Disappointing Friday update. :( At least this proves they're working on the 3DS version more... to me the Palutena leaks are only gaining more cred.

...But...WW Link and Spirit Tracks Link are two different Links...

It doesn't make sense to replace that Link since they are different entities.

They're the same style & would look too redundant. It'd be like putting TP & OoT Link next to each other.

Why would it be an issue to replace the (presumed) Ridley stage hazard with something else if Ridley is chosen to be playable? It'd be kinda like Spear Pillar from Brawl and how the stage hazard Pokémon can be either Dialga, Palkia, or Cresselia. They could easily replace Ridley with another enemy, or have a chance of either enemy appearing but Ridley just would never show up if he's being played as on the stage. It shouldn't matter if the different stage hazard enemies would function differently.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Replacing Link is more than a visual gimmick. It serves the aesthetic function of keeping Young Link's character profile unique for every match he's played in, which is important for any game where you need to keep track of an object.

Rhedogian, an annoying miniboss in Other M, he appears 3 times and there is one time Samus and Anthony fight it.

So how long do we have to suffer itsfuckingnothing.gif before people begin to lose faith in the leak?

People will lose faith in the leak once one of these things happen:
- The picture-savvy people find a way to prove it's a fake.
- Palutena uses a different model in-game.
- Palutena is deconfirmed as playable.

The leak doesn't mean that the character is going to be revealed soon, or next.

Just so everyone knows. In Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks all of the characters have faint black outlines.

Sooo, it might just be Alfonzo and Train Link who have the outline.

Train Link doesn't have it, but I don't think Alfonzo is actually outlined anyway.

Over 100 people have now taken a side.

What's this "leak"? What'd I miss?!

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=755954

The roundness of Mario's cap makes me skeptical, but everything else, from the proportions, to the outlines, the styling and the model's originality says otherwise. Palutena's lack of much of an expression (something very prominent on Smash for) and the convenient slash of the bottom screen are also things to consider, but not exactly indications to anything more than this is work-in-progress (which we know it is -- not being an official announcement and all).

I'm gonna go #TeamSkeptic.
