Just finished Vella's story. Was really surprised it just immediately rolled into Shay's story with no loading or whatever. I was like "WAIT NO I'M NOT READY!!!" :[

Man after watching the latest doc I had to see how it was doing on Steam. Seems it's doing okay, yeah? In the top 5 top sellers. Hopefully Act 1 is a good enough success for the team.

I'm gonna make like 2 bucks off all these trading cards. They're all going for like 19 cents right now.

I really liked Vella's part. I can't say I enjoyed Shay's act though, it felt lacking in puzzles to me. How the story unfolds is really great and the team seems to have put a lot of emphasis on small artistic details that link one character's story to another.

Watched the Kickstarter update. Awesome episode. Hopefully this sells well.

Also nice to see it on a giant banner on the Kickstarter home page. They know its responsible for their success, now they pimping it.

I'm a huge animation and cartoon nerd. This is the most beautiful game I've ever played. I can't stop staring at it. The facial expressions and body language are so good. When you get caught in the dialogue Vella totally emotes with her arms like she's just throwing stuff out there. You can see how shes not at all invested in some of the questions she asks. Its just really funny, its such a nice nod to the fact its an adventure game.

It's been getting some decent coverage across sites, and good reviews so far. The audience will no doubt be further expanded once their iOS versions come.

It does seem though that this is a huge game for the company because they are betting their independence on it.

That angle of it makes me kind of concerned. But then again, there are European devs who have been putting out adventure games as their main business and have been doing well enough to carry on with that. Maybe if BA isn't a runaway success here in NA (which I don't think anyone expected it would be given the niche genre) it might find a better footing in European territories.

Whatever happens I want them to be alright. DF deserves mainstream success and recognition so badly, even if that's not necessarily what they chase.

I'm now into Vella's story and I enjoy it more. For some reason it doesn't feel as much of a chore and has interesting characters so it's definitely more what I expected. Kinda odd since I initially was expecting other way around.

Had the same reaction. Liked but didn't love Shay's story, but loved Vella's.

Shay's had a lack of interesting character variety. I liked his knitted 'friends' but they weren't in it enough. The mom and the wolf came off a bit flat to me.

Finished it and my overall impressions are really positive after Vella's story. I mean it was just so much more vibrant and interesting. I had to look up a strategy guide to figure out a couple of things in the very end but that's just me, I guess.

Spoon and Knife would want to have a word with you. :(
They're barely in it, and believe me I clicked on everything with spoon. Even the ladder guard from Vella's part had more lines. The space section was full of these clever ideas that never got fully fleshed out, or at least compared to Vella's story.

I really like Shay's portion too. I just played about an hour of it. Shay's side has a lot of intrigue I didn't quite feel in Vella's story. (vella specifics)
The reveal about Steel Bunting and Vella's Grandfather had the same appeal to me. Vella spends most of her time in settings that are new to her so the interactions in Meriloft don't quite have the same world building weight. Or at least not yet. I'm sure part2 will fill in the blanks there. Theres a lot of really excellent stuff in the ending moments of Vella's side. Whereas so far Shay's story is entirely things that make me really interested to find out more.

This game just feels like one of those special games. There is such a high level of craft on display at given moment from any given discipline. I don't know what to focus on sometimes!

Just finished Shay's story. I'm liking this a lot so far, even though I wouldn't really call myself an adventure game kinda guy. The voice acting is great too, with Jennifer Hale in particular being pretty good.

#13 seller on Steam right now.

Outside the top 100 most played games from the stats page (it was something like 1500 players / 2100 peak yesterday).

Not sure what to make/expect of those numbers.

I feel like maybe they made a mistake releasing it to press & backers so early, feels like a lot of the steam has been taken out of the release

That's my impression as well.

And it makes sense why they wanted to have a review embargo - so that the word of mouth would coincide with the public release. At the time I felt they should have stuck to their guns on the embargo instead of reversing it.

I'm hoping that worst case scenario is that they find some less desirable method of getting the money they need. A long tail should exist for a game like this with sales, bundles, etc. It's the short-term high priced sales that are probably the bigger concern.

The backlash would have been ridiculous. Shit, people got all uppity about the review embargo.

Oh I think releasing to backers and the press at the time was really smart, and I appreciate it a lot, I just think it could have been later for both groups, if the game had been out this time last week for backers there would be a lot more people talking about it now, which might have encouraged more non-backers to give it a go.

So even though I was a backer and played through some of the intro bits, I ended up waiting until today to finish the rest of the game because I am a sucker for Steam cards (I am pathetic).

Add me to the list of people who enjoyed Vella's story more than Shay's, though the latter picks up a lot by the end. Vella's side is just a lot more fantastical, even though Shay is on a friggin' spaceship and all. I mean,
walking on clouds and talking trees and whatnot
, wonderfully ridiculous compared to Shay's more straightforward story. Really liked how everything comes together at the end
literally
.

About that ending:
I'm actually kind of smacking myself figuratively for only now realizing the parallels between the two stories, most notably that SHAY IS CONTROLLING MOG CHOTHRA. The whole minigame of aligning the boom arms is like Mog Chothra sucking up maidens with its tentacles WHY DID I NOT SEE THIS BEFORE.
And if that was the only thing that would be crazy, but then
there might be TWO Shays? I mean, we don't actually know who the Dead Eye God is, but the very heavy implication is that it's an older version of Shay. But then there's young Shay as well? And Dead Eye God says his ship crashed on that planet 300 years ago, and hey guess what Mog Chothra kinda crashes on the planet too so is there some weird time loop and OH GOD WHAT IS GOING ON.

Generally, I don't know why but I loved the voice acting, especially on Vella's side. Some really great/stupid/great lines too.
"Gus hasn't even dropped any letters from his name. It's because he's afraid everyone will think his name is Gas."
Oh, Broken Age. Please to be finishing Act 2 post-haste!

Don't forget that it was also a beta, and they needed time to actually act on feedback from the beta. I would guess they allocated one week for the first people to play through it, and one week to fix up bugs they reported.

I kinda wonder what will happen if they don't sell enough to fund Act 2...

Well, they can save their asses by saying they were fairly clear that it might all go down in flames. :lol At least they released something.

Although I don't know how a worst case scenario would affect the new steam buyers.

So I tried booting it up again on release in hopes that they might have fixed the crash that occurs for people with HD Intel Graphics, and they did!

The game is really cool so far. It certainly looks fantastic, and the general tone of it is pretty funny too. I'm looking forward to starting Vella's part later today.

I hope this game does well in the end, it definitely deserves it.

It's a $25 game without multiplayer sadism. Of course it's not the top seller on Steam. I'm sure it'll do fine for now, and better when it's finished.

I don't think anybody expected it to be a "top seller". It's just food for thought for people curious about how well the game is doing.

I'm actually kinda disappointed in that I paid so much for a pretty short (and although wonderful) a relatively timid adventure so far. The characters, VA, and puzzles are definitely a highlight, but I hope that's enough.

And I hope Act 2 doesn't take that long to release as well or the title may really run out of steam (still working on Shay's part, but Vella's cliffhanger isn't *that* nail biting).

I think the worst case scenario is it goes on sale for a discount earlier than what they'd want.

OMG WHAAAAAAAAAT
I just finished it, I definitely did not see that coming. Whoa. My mind is seriously blown right now.

Wow, so many thoughts running through my head. I really really enjoyed Shay's segment. I think I like Vella's character more but Shay's section of the game was more interesting.
But the ending cliffhanger that plays once you beat both... Whoa. I have so many questions.
I got the biggest grin on my face when Vella tried to sock him in the face. She just went for it.

So, how exactly do I get this as a backer? Also would those who've played through Act 1 recommend playing it now or would it be better to hold out until the full thing is released?

(You don't get this AS a backer if you're not a backer.(If you are, check your email?)) Buy it on Steam like any other game, like I did.
I recommend it if you're jonseing for the experience. I played the first half (two halves) and it totally reinvigorated my enthusiasm for games. And I'm gonna hold onto that for at least a week. If you've got nothing to fill that, then buy it right now. But if you've got other stuff to play I'm sure it will be much better play it all at once. But that could be like a year from now.

You claim it through humble bundle. Just make sure you have the same email for humble and kickstarter, or you need to go through a few hoops to get it.

Got the part in Shay's story where
he gets knocked out while in outer space and his helmet falls off, now I have to play Vella's story. Will I be getting back to Shay once I reach a point in Vella's story where I gotta switch to Shay?

You're done with Shay for now. Keep playing Vella's side.
