Wow, this is something spooky. I hope it's not cancelled. Why do they first annouce it, make a big fuss and then this... is this a new PR stunt to get people excited again? ARG happening right now?

It's being renamed to Big Brother. With the slogan "Big brother is watching you". My contact at Ubisoft Kandahar told me.

Unless something is seriously wrong with development, it seems idiotic to me to either cancel or rename the game - cancellation especially.

We were shown gameplay at EG Expo last year - and I thought it looked decent - not "oh my god this is the most amazing game I've ever seen", but good nonetheless. Certainly not anywhere near bad enough to require cancellation - this is no NBA Live 14 scale disaster, let's put it that way.

Renaming it seems strange too, because everyone who's hyped for it knows it as Watchdogs (or Watch_Dogs I suppose). I can see no reason to change the name unless someone has a trademark on it somewhere and has made a fuss and told them to change it.

Well they cancelled Rainbow Patriots because it wasn't up to scratch...
Did they really? How much did they lose? I was wondering where that game went.

So basically Ubi's next gen strategy is make everything a Ass Creed sequel/spin-off?

They should've changed it to: Assassins Creed: Rainbow Six Patriots, or Assasins Creed: Modern Battlefield

Just to clear up what he said, they didn't cancel it, but they pretty much started it from scratch by the sounds of it. A new rainbow 6 is coming, but it may not even be called patriots.

/thread.
It will be interesting to hear why this happened, but it sounds like no name change!

This made me chuckle a little bit.

Yea, the game was much too far into development to be scrapped. AC rebranding makes no sense as they don't gain anything by combining the IP's.

I'd say there might be a bit of risk involved with rebranding. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I haven't played an assassin's creed game since Brotherhood. It would end up taking a lot out of my hype for watch dogs if all of a sudden there's a handful of games that are potentially relevant to this new title.

HERE IS MY NEW THEORY

Watch_Dogs is obviously Assassin's Creed 5: Watch_Dogs. That much has already been proven by facts in this thread.

But what about The Division? We haven't heard about it for a while. I think The Division is really Assassin's Creed 6. And I've been thinking about it. We know the theme of the game is how money makes people sick because it carries bird flu, but in the post-money society you need to savenge for loot to sell for money, which you use to make people sick? Right? And then something about confetti? I'm not a smart guy but that's basically what I could tell from the E3 presentation. Anyway, I was thinking about how Cash Rules Everything Around Me CREAM get the money dollar dollar bill y'all

So I'm reasonably certain that Assassins Creed 6 is the Division and features Wu-Tang as playable characters.
Day knowledge.

The other thing that seems flatly absurd to me about this "it's being rebranded to assassin's creed!" theory is the idea that somehow they could release this as ACV -- as if they don't already have 27 teams composed of 1100 people working on 7 continents working on that game and a reveal coming in the next six weeks.

THIS.

I mean seriously people... Like AC5 isn't being made since 3 years or something.

I'm seriously baffled at the number of people who come in here to claim "it's just gonna be AC5, c'mon, obviously, it always was guys". At least I'm having a nice laugh :')

Because it's impossible for AC5 to be renamed AC6. That's why Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still a thing.

If Watch Dogs was Driver.

And Assassin's Creed was Prince of Persia.

Anything can happen.

They might not feel comfortable in its sales potential as a new IP. It really had the momentum of a new launch going for it last year. For them to squander their investment, where it might sell better as Assassin's Creed V, could totally be a decision they are making. Unlikely, but not baseless.

Nintendo have bought sole rights to this in a moneyhat exercise to increase user base of the WiiU
Its being rebranded
U Watch Dogs with tie in Nintendogs game on ios and android (their mobile strategy)

Maybe because it was "Watch Dogs" and not "Watch_Dogs" or the other way around?

Though you'd think they would or would be allowed to trademark both at the same time.

Ubisoft has filed six trademarks for Watch Dogs, none of which use the underscore for the stylized version of the title, "Watch_Dogs."

Those changes occured before the games were revealed, so I find the argument irrelevant.

Watch Dogs has been revealed and marketed as Watch Dogs, even if it some people think it has "lost momentum" or something, so it makes no sense to change the name a few months before release.

C'mon guys.

Ubisoft has invested WAAAY too much in this game -- both in cash and prestige -- for them to scrap it.

I'm not sure why they did this, but it's not because they're cancelling the game.

On February 1, 2014, Ubisoft Entertainment received an email from TEAS@uspto.gov notifying Ubisoft Entertainment that a Request for Express Abandonment had been filed in connection with Application Serial No. 85642398. The Request for Express Abandonment purports to be signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Ubisoft Entertainment, Yves Guillemot.

Mr. Guillemot, however, did not sign the Request for Express Abandonment, nor did Ubisoft Entertainment file the Request for Express Abandonment. The Request for Express Abandonment is fraudulent and was not filed by Ubisoft Entertainment or its representative.

As of this filing, the Office has not yet issued a Notice of Abandonment.

Seems like Ubisoft got [horatiocaine.gif] hacked.

Wow. I wonder if they were aware of this before the OP posted about it.
Well, depends on if someone was in office on the 1st of February:

And thanks for title change, mod.
