The Boston Celtics announced Saturday that forward Jeff Green will undergo surgery next month and will miss the entire 2011-12 season.

A routine physical administered after Green agreed to a one-year, $9 million contract with the Celtics last week detected an aortic aneurysm.

After consulting with leading cardiac specialists, the decision was made to completely repair Green's condition, and doctors indicated to him that he should be able to resume his basketball career during the 2012-13 season.

"While we are saddened that Jeff will not be able to play this season, the most important thing is his health, and we were fortunate to have access to an amazing team of specialists to evaluate Jeff's case," Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. "The entire Celtics family supports Jeff during this difficult time in his career."

In detailing the condition, Dr. Michael Kaplan, a senior medical correspondent for ESPN, stressed that the rupture of the aorta could be catastrophic. He stressed that surgery is still a major procedure, but that Green, 25, indeed could resume his basketball career down the road.

"An aortic aneurysm is a condition where the abdominal aorta, which is the largest blood vessel in the body, has a dilation, meaning the wall of the blood vessel thins and then balloons out," said Kaplan, who is not involved in Green's treatment. "It's more typical in older individuals with some sort of blood vessel disease, but we see it occasionally with people as young as Jeff, usually from other conditions."

Kaplan said that the condition could be congenital, or the result of another disease process such as Marfan syndrome.

Green's contract has been voided because of the failed physical, but the Celtics retain their rights to him when he returns.

Damn. Get well. $9 mil voided. yeesh.

So Green has a Triple A huh... poor kid.

Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman is asking rookie Derrick Williams to focus on playing power forward for now.

When the Wolves drafted Williams, he was projected at small forward because the team already has Love at power forward.

"I think he's just going to get more comfortable if he's playing one spot rather than two," Adelman said. "I thought he did a very nice job today. He shot the ball really well. When he really gets set, he shoots it pretty good."

... Kahn?

Get well green, i like green but in hindsight danny ainges dumb ass should be kicking himself now......shoulda kept perkins and nate.....sigh

What the hell kind of mindset is that? I don't have the same attachment to Green, but living through the Reggie Lewis incident was the most heart wrenching tragedy as a sports fan.

U cant take half my statement and disregard the rest.

Because it sounds like you are using this heart ailment as a reason against the move.

But you kinda play center if you're a bad interior player on defense, in the present era... Nobody to guard, except Dwight and the occasional Nene...

Because Love doesn't play help defense and you have to be an exceptional help defender to be a center or else you end up like Toronto or Utah/Minnesota where your center doesn't play help defense and your team ends up bottom 5 on defense. A Love-Williams frontcourt basically ensures that if Rubio gets beat off the dribble, it's a guaranteed layup for the offense.

Bad interior defense doesn't mean man on man, it means poor help defense. Any team with Love at center is going to be trash defensively unless he's playing next to a KG like defender at PF.

Love would probably get abused in the post by Jarred Jeffries at this point. No idea wtf he was thinking when he decided to lose 25 pounds during the lockout.

Terrible that Uncle Jeff has to have surgery but that is so much better than not being able to play basketball anymore. I hope he makes a strong return to the game in 2012-2013.

Matt Harpring's sources say Bogut's finally back from the elbow injury.

He calls his sources gnomes though so maybe he's just talking to his lawn gnomes or something and they talk back to him, but I will believe his lawn gnomes this time. Bucks going to destroy this year.

I'd like to think the team's medical insurance if not the team itself.

The lakers paid for Turiaf's surgery even though he never stepped on the court. I'd imagine the Cs are at least classy enough to do that much.
Has nothing to do with class. These guys are big boys with insurance and payrolls unlike any we will ever see.

I'm not saying I have a problem with an organization stepping in, just pretty sure a majority of it will be handled properly.

Since the contract was voided does this mean the Celts can't file for any kind of injury or disability exemption to sign someone else? if so, that would be the one, single good thing about this story. Fuck the Celtics. Hope Green makes a full recovery though.

John Hollinger
Incidentally, replacing him with injury exception would cost Boston $28 million A) have to pay Green, b) have to pay new guy, c) tax on both

Ric Bucher
Source gives 2nd reason for voiding deal: Celtics retain him as RFA. If contract stands, costs Boston $9m and he's UFA next summer.

Basically had to void the contract for basketball reasons instead of filing for injury exception. I don't really get it myself as to how it's a fair system.
