He's a big guy.

Maturity, bitches.
It's startling how pleasant everyone on that board is.

Probably because papercraft requires a lot of patience, so no short tempters, and basically everyone is equal in the world of paper craft. Not likely to get fanboy wars between die cutters and scissor users.

Saying that, haven't posted on 4chan in years. But I'll always stick up for /po/.

Should maybe sell meme services.

After all there are some people who are ready to pay a lot of money for Clinton memes for example.

This sounds incredibly salty.
Are you bitter about the way Moots tenure on 4chan ended up?

Not at all, I just point out what should be obvious to anyone, that the success of 4chan is most likely a one time thing in moots live. Also seeing how the core ideas behind 4chan are basically being completely abandoned by the internet as a whole makes it far more unlikely that Moot experience in creating an online community would work in Google's favor.

I wish him the best and even listen to his ramblings for 8hs during his final good bye but I seriously doubt that he can repeat the great experiment of social interaction that was (and still is) 4chan as a whole.

Good point. It's like a little Tibetan monastery rising above the sea of piss.

"I deleted ads and now we can't afford to stay open"

I wonder if those two have anything to do with one another?

4chan, if nothing else, has been a pretty great social experiment and I still believe that it functions as containment from the rest of the internet. Less so, in recent years, as moderator forces have dwindled to next to nothing on some boards, and crazy people running for president brought gave other crazy people an excuse.

but then where would the memes come from?

reddit, 9gag and other similar sites would die off.

And then all of the undesireables would spill out into the streets. A cascade of the worst humanity has to offer, unstoppable, immutable, and reprehensible. Some of us channers are kind of decent people, but there are still a great many who are most certainly not.

Realistically, everyone uses adblock because ads, so he really does need to figure out a way to keep it up.

For what it's worth, deleting aboard will only make people spread out into the rest of 4chan, creating communities in tangential boards instead of their own. Places like 8chan are due to moderation -- one of the last things Moot did was put his foot down on that.

I'd be really sad if 4chan changed dramatically. It provides boards on topics that just don't get covered elsewhere (like /po/), without having to deal with the whole nonsense of maintaining a digital persona, fake internet points and the likes.
Traditional forums suck for that and Reddit is just a popularity contest with attached topics.
Sure, there are tons of other imageboards around, but none with even a similar population. If 4chan was to cease operation, all those posters would just scatter to different *chans and eventually lose interest.

I really hope they will go the route of less performance, maybe eliminating some boards (containment boards hint hint), reducing file sizes or board page numbers.

4chan is long past its expiration date

shut it down

you are joking but IIRC 4chan has been running on fumes for like... a while now. Shits a lot to afford and difficult to run given the nature of the people on that site. I mean all the worst people fucked off to 8chan to do crime, but there are still people there occasionally making peoples lives.... rather difficult.

Well, as far as what's been mentioned, as far as board names go, here's what they mean:
/v/ - video game board
/vg/ - video game general board (think community threads here)
/vp/ - Pokemon board
/vr/ - retro video games board
/a/ - anime and manga board
/jp/ - Japanese culture board
/m/ - mecha board
/co/ - cartoons and comics board
/b/ - random "anything goes" board (except for blatantly illegal content)
/pol/ - politics board/board where people try to be politically incorrect, both as a joke and seriously
/aco/ - Western pornographic art
/h/ - Japanese pornographic art
/gif/ - Pornographic gifs and webms
/e/ - nonpornographic yet sexually oriented art
/r9k/ - board where lonely people complain about life
/mu/ - music board
/tv/ - Television shows board

And a few pieces of extra terminology:
baneposting - Posting memes related to the character Bane from the Batman films. Typically goes something along the lines of "You're a big guy", "For you" and "crash this plane with no survivors"
tripcodes - A code and name assigned to a user themselves so as to not be anonymous
Pepe - Frog character from a very old comic that got popular with /r9k/ and /pol/ that resulted in many image edits and memes based on him. Recently touted as being racist and/or a white nationalist symbol by the media
moot - original owner and creator of 4chan

Any other terminology you'll need to be more specific about though.
Thanks, that really helps.

Can anyone explain to me the Treehouse thing? I understand that 4chan sent a poster with pictures thanking them but why did they regret it afterwards?

/pol/ and post-gamergate /v/ drove me away from 4chan and got me to register on GAF but I still hold a small torch for /a/ and /vg/.

you don't see GG threads on /v/ and even if someone makes them they get deleted pretty quickly.

dunno, maybe it has to do with the meme localisations and content removal

I remember stumbling across 4chan in high school and then using it so much in college. Hardly ever go there anymore though.

Easy_D

never left the stone age
My question is where and how did the shift happen.

I'd wager it was around the same time /x/ stopped being about urban myths, folklore, innawoods, urban exploration to being about creating magical demon girlfriends, tarot readings and "I'm a vampire/god/alien/time traveller ask me anything" to whatever the fuck. Oh and "TEH MANDELUR EFFECT CERN CERN CERN".

Because /v/ isn't one person or even one stable community with a unique set of things they like, and people that aren't into Nintendo games take into their hands to laugh at the fans that do like Nintendo. In fact, the same goes for all other fandoms laughing at the others' favorite company mistakes to basically generate trolling. This day all the masive boards work mostly the same, you make an outrageous statement and then laugh away as the fandoms assemble and shit each other for hours.

It's still a cesspool of alt-right gaming neckbeards. I don't really need that in my life anymore.

I am aware it's the political discussion board at 4chan and is filled with energetic conversation. I guess I'm saying I'm not sure why it would be shut down.
/pol/ should be shut down on moral grounds, but I think those posters misunderstood Hiroyuki's point about closing boards.

4chan is not financially sustainable with its current traffic volume, and removing boards is one way to offset that problem.

somethingawful route, charge for membership,avatars,etc

edit: also ghost song looks like a really cool game
SA revenue is down 90% from its peak. Lowtax had to do a donation drive a few months ago to make up for costs and it's looking likely he'll have to do another one soon to pay for forum updates

I've been a 4chan user for 10 years, the site helped me find a few of my best friends, introduced me to countless new forms of media I would have never been privy to otherwise, and I've probably laughed harder than I have at anything else browsing it, and it helped me through a lot of dark days.

To think people want to just get rid of it because it makes them uncomfortable is depressing. It clearly has its purpose. I say let it live. Fix some of the glaring issues, but don't destroy it.

I have no problem with them eliminating /pol/ though, /r9k/ should probably go as well to eliminate the last dregs of the shooting controversey. But the many dozens of boards on there provide a community for many disenfranchised young adults. Look at any of the creative boards. Let those kids have their website, its not like anyone if forcing any of you to go there.

I don't believe in containment. Boards that are hyper-focused on subjects or ideologies tend to allow people to reinforce each other's extreme points of view. If you force people in a community like that back out into the general population, they'll eventually assimilate to its culture.

"Containment" for something like bronies just amounted to the subject-specific forum providing an excuse for pony-related content to be banned from other forums.

Same. I thought this thread was going to be tidal wave of "and nothing of value was lost" comments.
Well, it's not like I can stay there all the time, you know? I love the place, but it had some serious issues and discussion, while wide ranging, generally doesn't broach the quality I can get it if here.

I miss the way 4chan used to be. Where we could say dumb things and get lambasted for it, make fun of stupid ideas or come up with one collectively. Bashing the past, present, and future... But always looking forward to it.

Many 4channers had shitty lives and problems to deal with, but that place was ours, no matter how much we hated it. I would not be the person I am if not for 4chan. But there's the extreme of that too, one that I brushed entirely too close to. That isn't what 4chan is supposed to be. /pol/ is politically incorrect, it's not supposed to be racist, sexist bigots.

But that is what it is now. So, in a way, I'm a refugee from that place. For what it's worth, GAF reminds me of pre-2008 4chan. We share our own injokes, our own memes, and we don't have to worry about neonazis running it for everyone. I can say that I'm a gaffer and nobody will cringe. It's nice to be accepted. 4chan never had that problem, there. It didn't matter who you were, your name, your sex, your gender, your race. You were treated like the nobody you were by so the other nobodies.

In our anonymity amongst a sea of anonymity, we knew what it was to be truly free.
It will never exist like that again.
