4chan in trouble - Martin Shkreli wants to be the new moot

Well, gay men aren't trans (generally speaking unless they're a transman who is gay of course)......trap is just an insulting slur that's typically aimed towards the trans community. It's degrading us and regaling the old "joke" about how transwomen are out to deceive men. It's not really sexually appealing to be called a trap.....it's really really not.

Actually, in the sense that it's commonly used on 4chan and the way the two above me were referring to it, "trap" has nothing to do with being trans.

"Trap" in this sense refers to, simply, a girly looking man that is either extremely feminine looking or wearing female clothing. There is no 'trans' element to how it's used there. You might as well just use 'crossdresser,' but words often change meaning based on popular usage in certain subcultures.

In that sense, "reverse trap" refers to what is also called a tomboy, a manly-looking girl who often dresses up in what is traditionally considered to be male clothing, like a T-shirt and loose jeans or something.

I realize that it's an offensive term, and no one's arguing that. I'm just letting you know that it has little intentional connection with the trans community when used in this way.

That's doesn't mean it's not hurtful to trans people, dude.

It is used to significant degrees to represent trans people, I have personally seen people use it in that way on and off chan forums. Just because it also refers to crossdressing does not change that it is a slur used against trans people.

This is all true, but it in context of 4chan (and hentai in general), the term is used more for feminine male crossdressers rather than transwomen. Hence, there being several threads on /y/ on the subject and the term being used more in /femgen/ threads than anything related to trans issues.

But it's also used on chan sites, 4chan included, to refer to trans people in a negative context.

As I said at the end of that post, I'm not saying that at all, I'm providing context. I'm not arguing that.

I'm sure it's hurtful to gay people to call them 'f*gs' and several gay people I know refer to themselves as such regardless.

People, we need leave /mu/ behind at this point. /mu/ is a mess. When /mu/ posts their threads, they're not posting their best. They're posting their k-pop generals, their Jason Aldean memes, their pleb/patrician shitposting. And some of them, I assume, are good threads.
No. None of them are good threads. Rather, the good threads are the only ones I can't name. Those threads were the best, and still are to an extent.

"Fag" is used against gay people by straight people with the intention of disparaging them for being gay. The comparison you make makes no sense.

And, as was said earlier, "trap" is used against transgender people with the intention of disparaging them for seemingly tricking heterosexual males or females into having sex with them. I'm providing a niche cultural context for another use of the term which they seemed to be unaware of.

Well sure, I'm not denying that nor am I denying the fact that there are lots of idiots who don't know the difference either, but when someone like Frozenprince brings up trap threads, they're gonna be referring to cis men.

Then I ask, outside of trans people using it, is there an "okay" way to refer to someone as a tranny? ie, "I love tranny porn" or something like that. It is not inherently problematic because the purpose is not to disparage, but it is either ignorant or inconsiderate to use that word.

My post does not in any way attempt to deride of insult trans people. Lord knows they get enough insults and derogations from society as is. It was just meant to be in jest regarding the colloquial use of the word on those boards as " thread with skinny boys wearing cute dresses".

Thought better of it after the fact.

No one said it wasn't ignorant or inconsiderate in this thread. It happens regardless. It's a popular ingrained term whether I like it or not. Porn terminology runs the gamut of offensiveness on many levels in lots of ways.

I, again, cannot believe that so many adults would admit to reading and being emotionally invested in 4chan.
4chan used to be a legitimately good site. It had it's trash, but it also had a lot of hilarious stories and jokes.

It's comics and cartoon board is also better than the comic talk that happens here.

My point was not that people who engage in that kind of terminology use are doing so with bad intentions, but that people who do use that terminology should be informed of the negative weight that it carries. Like you said, trans people get a lot of insults thrown their way, and as such in can be tiresome to see that kind of terminology thrown about.

Which is why I almost immediately thought better of it given the connotations of the word.

Not trying to nor would I ever want to make someone uncomfortable because their orientation.

Just was a force of habit regarding the subject of this thread

And I'm not trying to pile on you given that you understand. I'm more responding to the continued discussion on trap as a term outside of the realm of transphobia. I think people understand that it is not inherently used to disparage, people just really want to emphasize why it should not be used in that way.

Martin is shitposting incarnate. Love him. 4chan better not be shut down, even though I don't browse anymore I have so many fond memories of that dump

What's funny is that a conversation like the one over the past page would never get resolved like this on 4chan, it'd just be a screaming match until someone decided to intentionally kill the thread by spamming it with pictures so no one else could keep on talking and the thread would fall off the board and die.

These days, I browse NeoGAF more than 4chan because I don't like stewing in that sort of atmosphere like when I was younger.

NeoGAF, despite some warts here and there, is generally a lot better place to have this kind of conversation, yeah. 4chan is generally the last place I'd go for people willing to be introspective. :p

They're already going to the other boards, they just don't usually spam them with shitposting. It's not like people in /pol/ don't have interests in video games or anime.

Yeah, but I mean in hordes. I can tell just by the conversations with people I have on /a/ or /vg/ that they browse /pol/.

What I'm referring to is random shitposting being turned to 11 on non /pol/ and /b/ boards every time one of those boards goes down. I recall /b/ going down a few years ago. The whole website became much shittier (than usual) that day since the /b/ idiots had no where else to go other than random other boards.

I can attest to this. Even when /pol/ is working properly I have to deal with people posting dozens of images of anime girls with Make America Great Again hats on /a/, WE WUZ KANGS N SHIET on /v/ thanks to the popular image macro's association with Age of Empires II, among other things. When these boards go down the rest of the site suffers even worse than usual.

What's point of /aco/ if it disallows furry? Like, what do people think makes up a large portion of /co/'s characters? I get there's other characters but for pete's sake, this is /co/ we're talking about
What was the point of /aco/ fulll stop? /co/ threads are already fetish smut threads when they're not about the liberal agenda killing marvel or whatever

Also 4chan mentalities are never going to mess with GAF or a lot of the wider public; even before they went blatantly right-wing and were more just lovably anarchistic they were floating around terms like 'trap' and 'namefag'. It was intentionally crude but not necessarily meant as a genuine put-down of the people who'd get targeted by those slurs.

Within the last few years and the rise of /pol/ on the site it's harder to argue all of that isn't genuine and rather it's just in good fun and 4chan's way of being playfully provocative. Probably why you can go back even 5 years ago and still see a fair amount of 'faggot' being thrown around even outside of imageboard culture without people having to question what the intent behind it was, whereas online now it's mostly gone back to immediately being seen as intentionally bigoted towards gays.

And that's where you're missing out. You will find that exact kind of thing there, and the exact opposite, usually within seconds of each other, on any number of the thousands and thousands of threads per day.

On this one very topic you have been posting about, you would have had someone saying what you were eloquently and attempting to educate, and someone saying how delicious this particular "trap" is, and someone explaining in great detail how the earth is clearly flat while arguing with a man that accompanies every single post he makes with a different type of cool sink, all in the same thread. A thread that would reach its post limit, and then be gone to possibly never be looked upon by anyone again....and then it all starts over.

That's the beauty of the site, and the beauty of anonymity.

This sounds like something Shkreli would do but I still laughed when I read the thread title.

Also, thanks to this I learned that currently a Japanese man owns 4chan and an American man owns 2chan. So... that's something, huh.

EDIT: I scrolled up and how the hell did we get on that topic? It's definitely a slur, though.

That sounds nice, but after eleven years there (and sometimes browsing the damn site almost all hours of the day every day, I had far too much free time) I can tell you that those moments are rare. These days it's worse than ever and I'm not as willing to sift through crap to enjoy moments of that.

S lot of it is just that the old guard has entirely moved on. I'm old now. I got a kid. I've neither the time nor the energy nor the patience to shitpost loudly about whatever dumb stuff /a/ or /b/ or /co/ is kvetching about anymore. So for the most part I just go to see general impressions about games and get new wallpaper.

Most users phase out on the same way I think. You graduated HD or college then you're just done.

That doesn't just describe just 4chan, but social media in general. People just get tired of wading through the bullshit and find other commitments.

There are a lot of redundant boards. It was less bad 10 years ago when the unwritten or very very occasionally written "keep shit here" rules were at least kinda followed. But /co/ and /aco/ and /b/ are all mired in ponies for example. So the distinction of having is OEM board is pointless.

Yeah it's fairly general knowledge that while things may have occasionally happened like this back in the early days, it doesn't now at all. The place is almost entirely devoid of calm discourse outside of general threads.

Fun facts: Lauren Faust, Andrew WK, Deadmau5, Tom Green, Zelda Williams (Robin's daughter,) and many other celebrities have posted and confirmed their identity on 4chan or had an official Q&A. Like it or not, 4chan has quite a history.

In fact, 4chan was the big 'connection' for Mamare Touno, the author of Log Horizon, to talk with his Western fanbase.

This goes negatively too, of course, when /a/ tried to have a nice rapport with the Watamote author but /v/ users ended up sending her pictures of their dicks. That particular incident got referenced in the manga, actually, in a little post-chapter doodle.

Exactly.
You can really tell the difference in /tv/ once /pol/ infected it.
Now imagine if it infected /mu/ or /lit/, the quality dip would be palpable.

Ya I'd say its time ta cut dead weight. Waaaay to many "trial" boards added in the last years or so. Whats the point of saying they're a trial in the first place? Has even a single one gotten shutdown? The most recent ones already nearly half a year old! Plus like ya say, it leads to lotsa redundant boards.

/m/ should be dissolved back into /a/ and /jp/. That board on its own is just full of so much filler rerun threads in vain attempts ta keep it afloat. Pokémon shoulda never had its own board, it oughta be merged back with /v/. It'd save on the ton of Pokémon stuff that gets crossposted to /v/ anyways. Ditto for /vr/ which just seems like another filler place. Heck theres even a pony board apparently? Ya I'm sooo sure that has enough content ta justify its existence (you to origami, why wouldn't that just fall under art?). There are sites out there with seperate space for even the smallest of interests. Pretty sure 4chan wasn't supposed ta be one of 'em?

I honestly don't care if 4chan stays or goes. I imagine it's difficult to get advertisers for and most channers are running adblock. Moot has said as much on the past. Which suggests that without fundamental changes it's going to continue to have the same problems, regardless of who's running it.

It's removal doesn't help the internet, because chan culture exists and will just move to some other board if 4chan disappears. If I thought the removal of 4chan would take channers with it, I'd be all for it, but since it won't it doesn't really matter to me whether it lives or dies.

If it dies itd make life for you guys harder I know that much. Many many obnoxious users would migrate here.

Hell, Natasha Allegri (Adventure Time, Bee and Puppycat) used to do a ton of request threads on /co/ semi-regularly, including some slash art with the girls. Similar to the Watamote incident ended badly when people started requesting Nat draw porn of herself, even if it was just a vocal minority (successfully) derailing those threads.

However from what I heard from a few people over the recent years (mostly the Clarence harassment drama and GamerGate coming from 4chan) the studios may've started clamping down more on their animators posting there. Or making themselves *known* and posting there at the very least. However what with the recent harassment of Steven Universe staff on Tumblr I feel it may wind up being most social-media in general at this rate.

Some of the boards were created for the express purpose of cleaning up shitposting. My Little Pony fans and images were clogging up so much of 4chan and in every thread that users started complaining en masse to management, so they got their own containment board.
