Books
  • Ninefox Gambit - Yoon Ha Lee (B)
  • The Ballad of Black Tom - Victor LaValle (C)

Movies and TV

Ninefox Gambit was my favourite book last month. Throws you right in the deep end, but the ride is fun and the lore is great.

While i have been counting tv shows in my movies list, i have actually managed to watch 48 movies this year, so as long as i get the books out of the way, i will manage to complete the challenge legitimately.

Ha! 100/100 club.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things was an interesting book. I thought it was a book about suicide but then on the very first page you see it's about a relationship.
Then you finish it and it's about a suicide.
Kind of a mind fuck, and it's a very fast read.

Obviously I have given up on the book contest, but I still trying to finish strong in this last month by doing my best to get to 50 movies. Hoping that because Oscar season is in full swing, the more prestigious movies are going to be hitting this month and I will enjoy these movies more as opposed to those that come out in the summer which has just become a Super Hero Spectacle fanfest which I hate. I like my movies to be serious and thought-provoking and having a message instead of just dumb fun.

Hey I actually managed to do one of these closer to the actual update day. The chart has gotten annoyingly large to account for my spreadsheet outputting the values onto it. I'll try to fix that for our last one in December.

I've been dealing with some turbulence in my life and I have derailed completely on this challenge. It seems I will end up reading less than last year :/ There's always next year!

I'll get to 50 books (already well over 50 movies, but haven't updated in a long time), but it'll be a little grey. Some of those are long audiobook versions of books I've read before, but the audiobooks are bringing it to life in a way I don't recall in the books. That along with their long time length is making me include them. Like I said, a little grey, but don't think I'd be able to get to 50 this year without it. (o.o)

You do you Donny. I ain't judging nobody. I think I counted blade runner final cut in one of the film years. Though with that I did go look for the contrasts and changes with the cuts etc. So my engagement with the film making process was a whole lot more work & rewarding.

I'm at 45 books and no way I'm catching up by the end of the year, I just don't have time. I could use over 500 pages = 2 books rule though, but that kinda feels like cheating.

Holy Shit the prose in this books is mindbogglingly beautiful.

6. Kyrik: Warlock Warrior 02/5/2016
Absolutely by the book and awful but dumb read while on the beach on a small vacation. Early 1970s conanism fantasy
7. The Halloween Tree 02/06/2016
I love bradbury and this book was a fun romp through the history of Halloween and horrors. I saw the movie way way back when but never knew a book existed.
8. Kafka on the Shore
This was mesmerizing and surreal (most murakami) but the 15yr old kid isnt that believable.
9. Wee Free Men 3/29/2016 Pratchett
Pratchetts first young adult book.. not as good as the rest of discworld but ended strong.

I hate everyone in this book. Everyone. It was so depressing to read this as spring started to come out. thankfully its short
Mr Penumbra's

Fantastic book. Loved it. I need more egan
14. 11/22/63 04/24/16 King

This is pure pulp. I fucking enjoyed this soo much. I already bought the next in the series. Its so easy and fun to read.
17. Room to call ones Own 5/31/2016
I really had to push through this one. I like jane austen but jesus, wolfe was on her dick like a cheap prostitute in sailor town. Still informative and thought provoking.
18. Secret History 5/27/2016
Epic. engrossing characters. this is modern day masterpiece even though its almost 20 years old now. I cant wait to read goldfinch now.

23. The Drawing of Three 06/29/16 King
FUCK DETTA.

Weird. I think i like it but i think its oddly written and the history stuff slows the momentum a lot.

26. The wastelands 07/20/16 King
The tower gets ever closer and we will continue to remember the face of our father
27. train dreams 07/14/16 johnson
Wonderfully written and succint. His characters are ripped from history with lives so robust and heartfelt. Its amazing its actually fiction and not a diary.

I was not ready for this. I will never be ready for this. Prose like this is sipped and enjoyed and cherished.

This was a delightfully odd book of short stories.
41 Miserable Mill 11/14/16 Snicket
42 Fates and Furies 10/18/16 Groff
I didnt like this very much. I think The guy is a much better protagonist and the switch to her ruins the last half the book.
43 Everyday Sexism 11/12/16 Bates
I loved this book but it made me feel like shit everytime i read it. Finishing it just after the trump election, steeled my need to help make a difference

Letham is a genius.
48 Austere Academy 12/16/16 Snicket
There is finally overarching plot movement in a snicket book. These are getting fun.
49 The heart goes last 12/14/16 Atwood
Margret has lost her touch, her world building is gettin to be kind of shit lately but i still like some of the side characters.

Congrats, Krauser Kat!

Also, I guess this is a good time to ask if anyone wants to take over the reigns for next years thread. I don't mind doing it again next year if nobody steps up.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
Congrats, Krauser Kat!

I'd love to help out in any way I can but I just recently got a baby girl so my attention will be elsewhere next year. (This will most likely affect my performance next year as well, even though she's very Netflix friendly.)

Hit the 50/50 goal as of yesterday. I'm now at 51 books and 50 movies.

Congrats, Maklershed!

Congrats to all the people that managed it, I'm definitely feeling more confident about next year. I wasn't very close to 50 books this year but I read more than I ever had in a year which is what I'm happy about.

48 books done as of Christmas day.

I have started number 49, and should finish that soon.

Any suggestions for book number 50?
