6 Dutch political parties want loot boxes gone from games after just having legalized online gambling proper

Those 6 parties include the 4 parties that make up the cabinet and also the Greens and the Socialist party. This is especially odd because the government legalized online gambling last October, allowing people to gamble their lives away on the internet without any restrictions.

The motion states that loot boxes are a form of gambling, that they are addicting, and that they should be completely banned from video games.

IIRC you have to actually be verified of adult age in order to gamble online tho, and I think a lot of those sites need some type of online account you can tie your funds to (i.e you can't just use a debit card).

A lot of companies like EA put lootboxes in games that kids and teenagers can legally buy, that's where the line is probably being crossed. If they limited lootboxes to AO-rated games then there'd probably be no problem.

Problem is there ARE no AO-rated games especially on console, and the only ones on PC tend to be porn or hentai games (they don't even get officially rated, just "Unrated" cuts/versions of those games with clear content warnings).

Don't see the problem. Alternatively just give them an AO category in the US or the local equivalent. What's even the point of having that rating if no one want to use it?

Is it not mostly because all of our national lotteries and stuff fund the state's pocket? So they'd want to limit revenue streams that veer away from that?

That said, I didn't know they just legalized online gambling. Does that mean we can go to slots.com and go crazy or what?

The highest rating by PEGI is 18+ and it's already widely used, European ratings by individual countries generally also have their own 18+ equivalent.

Yes there are a lot of restrictions for gambling.

However as a Dutch citizen I can say it's mostly about the money. People were using websites to gamble anyway and those weren't paying taxes. No point in making those assholes in Malta richer.

This is very bad news for Dutch gamers if this comes to pass.

The Netherlands' video game market is nowhere near large enough for publishers to change their business ticket for. If this does come to pass, there's a good chance that every single major multiplayer release will simply skip the Netherlands and not release there.

We already see this happening with some major titles such as Lost Ark not releasing in the Netherlands and Belgium due to having stricter laws regarding loot boxes. I applaud the regulation of loot boxes, but this needs a EU wide approach.
