A Tales series appreciation thread - What are your fond memories, favorite games?

Tales of the Abyss on PS2 was my first dive into the series and while I liked it I didn't consider it anything special. It wasn't until Namco started bringing the series to Europe on a regular base that I became a fan. I even took my time and collected all games that have never been released outside of Japan when I was in Tokyo two years ago.

For me, even though the series reuses assets quite frequently and is littered with fetch quests and anachronistic design choices there's still something I like about it. I've put more then 100 hours into Graces f, Xillia 1 & 2 and Hearts R and platinumed each of them. As some people already mentioned, Zestiria is kind of a disappointment though: boring story, unlikeable cast, overly compliacted battle system and the equipment handling is nothing short of annoying.

Out of the one I've finished my favourite has to be Tales of Hearts R. In my opinion it succeeds everywhere where Zestiria is lacking: while still cliché the story is much better, the characters are fun to play as, the voice acting is good and it's a much happier game overall.

Symphonia was my first game and boy did I love it. It opened my eyes to other RPG's not named Final Fantasy. I've loved almost every Tales of Game I've played including Symphonia 2.

Symphonia - One of the best RPG's ever made.

Legendia - Great characters and music (Go Shiiina should compose instead of Sakuraba).

Abyss - Great epic game but shit characters with crappy writing. Fuck you Anise.

Vesperia - Up there with Symphonia, So freaking great. Doesn't look like Microsoft will make this Backward compatible

Graces F - Real great game too. Loved Sophie, the world and characters.

Xillia 1 & 2 - The current format of the games. Loved both with Xillia 2 being the better one.

Zestiria - Great game too but kinda dull party. First Tales of game with a dull party.

Berseria - Up there with Vesperia. Albeit main character is kinda lame through most of the game but the rest of the cast is so strong that they make up for it. Actually prefer this to Final Fantasy 15.

They are all top notch RPG's with great interesting characters and gameplay and I'm glad they still make them.

Playing through Graces was one of my favorite experiences last generation. I loved everything about it. Plus, Pascal is the GOAT.

Xillia 1, was the first JRPG i played in Japanese that my reading ability was enough to understand the game. Put so many hours into it and bought a ton of dlc. The combat was excellent and I loved the cast.

Symphonia and Abyss are two of my favorite games, with the former being one I'm especially fond of. Flawed in many ways, yet I never tire of playing it.

Shame they lost their way in the HD era, although I'd argue the decline was embryonic in DOTNW and Graces. Main reason I don't really want a Symphonia remake anymore.

Best moments in the franchise :

Tales of symphonia : when you learn about kratos goals and the twist

Tales of vesperia : When i found out that yuri wasn't fucking around and had a different set of morals than the rest of normal JRPG heroes.

Tales of Eternia : I don't even know what part of this game i enjoyed the most but maybe i enjoyed the aurora trials the most i guess ?

Tales of xilia : When the cast was talking about their favorites pets and then get asked her opinion and she replies : " humans of course"

Tales of destiny : Leon , all of it
--------------------------------------

Best battle systems :
Destiny 1 director cut > Graces > xilia > Abyss > phantasia director cut >>> the rest >>>>> legendia

My god , legendia battle system is bad

Started off with Symphonia on the Gamecube, really loved that game. Spent 80+ hours on a first playthrough, and then 40+ on a second playthrough. Really enjoyed using the T/S skill glitch to get a ridiculous range of skills for Genis.

Then having a Gamecube and no PS2, was gutted when Abyss came out. Ended up playing it on 3DS and being disappointed.

Graces F was disappointing.

I played Vesperia PS3 in Japanese with a translation guide, and watching a Lets Play of the 360 game for cutscenes (legitimately the most ridiculous set up ever), and loved the hell out of it. Never ended up finishing it though.

Then Xillia 1 and 2 are games I own, but have no real interest in playing. I'm interested in Berseria, but Zestiria looks like complete junk.

It's a series that has disappointed me more than anything, and looking back I'm not sure Symphonia was really ever that good (having played through the ToS Chronicles version). Would absolutely love to play Vesperia again though, perhaps in English this time...

I wish we get the crossover games like Radiant Mythology, I would love to see cross party interactions!

It also helps to make it feel like things aren't over with the characters despite finishing their stories

Berseria treats the audience as if they hadn't played Zestiria most of the time, leave or take a few harmless nods at the continuity. I skipped Zestiria and had no problems with Berseria.

Abyss is the only one I could ever really get into, and is one of my top ten PS2 RPGs. The story and the characters worked really well and weren't what I expected. Luke's evolution is overplayed at points, but overall is nicely done and a fairly unique arc and angle. The music is great too, my favorite Tales music. I used to play before going to work when I lived in NYC, and I had like an hour after my wife left but before I had to walk to the subway. I'd always watch the intro animation, and when the song came back remixed in the final dungeon it was really hype. Definitely nostalgic. If my PS2 still worked I might spin it up again.

Vesperia was fun, but just didn't draw me in for some reason. None of the others have come close for me...

Ah, the Tales series...

So:

Phantasia - my main memories of this are some kind of interminable mine dungeon involving dwarves, and people being obsessed with Indignation. It's been the best part of twenty years since I played it, and although I know I finished it I remember basically nothing about it. The opening theme is still pretty nostalgic, although the PSX remake's version was vastly better than the "revolutionary" SNES one. Much of my fondness for Tales games is actually tied up in OPs, for some reason - I've always loved the theme song from the anime series, which was a disjointed mess otherwise. I had absolutely no grasp of how to "play" the battle system - and still don't in most Tales games except Graces, really, I button mash through most of them...

Destiny - I've only played the remake and didn't make it very far for whatever reason. I can't really comment very fairly on the game as a result; I also didn't play the "Director's Cut" version (with the extra Leon storyline or whatever).

Eternia - I have a real soft spot for this one; I imported the US version and rebought it on PSP when it came out over here. I already "knew" the characters as I'd watched the anime series spinoff (not great, but I was a baby anime fan at the time and enjoyed it regardless). By keeping the playable character roster so small (seriously, who ever played as Chat or Max?) the story could focus in on them better than many of the more sprawling games. I also thought it was a particularly beautiful game at the time; I loved (and still love) the 2D games. While the series (and many others!) has revisited the worlds-in-conflict storyline several times since, I particularly enjoyed that aspect of the story too. The battle system hasn't aged brilliantly, but it's still a great game IMO.

Destiny 2 - I've played this one-and-a-bit times - the "bit" time revealed just how much better Tales games are when you actually make an effort to use the battle system properly... Kyle is one of the more obnoxiously shounen lead characters in the Tales franchise (which is saying something) and much of the second half of the story is lost on me as I never played all the way through Destiny, but the game is a lot of fun regardless. Elraine is a great villain. I never got the hang of using Nanaly, though...

Symphonia - I owned the PS2 version, which was a dreadful port and put me off the game entirely within a few hours. While I'd like to play it purely because Symphonia holds such a special place in US Tales fandom in particular, I don't think I'm ever going to get around to it; I'll buy the PC remaster at some point.

Rebirth - while it is fun to dump on the story of this game for its heavy-handed racism tropes (a favourite of the Tales series) and the fairly hilarious dramatic moment revolving around peach pie, I absolutely loved Tales of Rebirth. Its battle and experience system is flexible and complex in a very accessible manner; the cast is varied and endearing, limiting its annoying moments to Mao and Tytree, both of whom are far from bad; the dungeons have entertaining puzzles etc. I'd love to make the time to replay this some day.

Legendia - such beautiful music! Such a lovely setting! Such a boring, boring game! I don't think I even finished the main storyline, let alone the character chapters post-game. A big disappointment.

Abyss - got probably around halfway through before stopping and never returned to it on PS2; I own the 3DS version but haven't even begun to play it. I found this really difficult to get into, for some reason; partly the fact that Luke was such a dick, partly because I sucked at using the Field of Phoneme system effectively. Perhaps I'd do a better job now? Maybe I'll just try and watch the anime instead, which I got a fair bit into before stopping.

Vesperia - everyone knows this is a great game, although I do wonder if it would still hold up today. The battle system refines and improves Symphonia/Abyss perfectly, while the world and cast of characters are pitched perfectly for a "fun" romp while still having serious moments. A really great instalment.

Hearts - DS version waaaaaay better than the rather low-budget feeling Vita remake. Nuff said. Silly plot, though.

Graces - only played F, and loved it. I know people rag on the cliches with this game, but they never really bothered me all that much; I quite like Asbel (I know!!!!!). Most importantly, the battle system is sooooooo good that it doesn't matter much about the rest of it.

Xillia - boring, boring, boring. The flaws of the more recent Tales games are well documented in terms of their dull open fields (not a Tales exclusive problem - Falcom's RPGs are fairly similar), unsatisfying experience and equipment mechanics and so forth; I also cared little for the storylines of any of the characters, and was glad it was over. Never played Xillia 2 as a result.

Zestiria - this is fine, I guess? It's the last one I've played, although I certainly didn't get that far into it (maybe about halfway?). I like the central conceit of the Shepherd and so forth but again feel it suffers from boring open fields (and some fairly boring dungeons, too). I also have absolutely no idea what they were going for with the battle system as it feels like it's devolving back into button mashing as a viable route to success again.

I've not played any of the escort titles, Innocence, Xillia 2 or Berseria; I'm looking forward to the next game in the series being announced to see if it will hold my interest at all.

Special bonus link - I may have never played it, but I do like Oku Hanako's Glass Flower, the OP from Narikiri Dungeon X.

You have the Tales of on mobiles for that now.

I don't know why it never came to the west. Tales of the Abyss did well in the west on 3DS. Namco definitely made a mistake there.

It didn't do stellar either, by series standard 200k is a good number but it benefited from being one of the first big RPG on 3DS
Tales of Hearts didn't have that, it was also mostly a 2D game at its core which made it a hard sell and Bamco fully focused on both Vesperia (2008 in the US 2009 in EU) and Dawn of the New World (2008-2009 also), the DS market was flooded with great RPG and having a third Tales releasing on a third platform would have just confused the fanbase even more.

I mean I would have loved to see the game being released, but I do understand why they didn't bother, even Innocence would have made more sense.

Dawn of the New World for Wii was my first one and I LOVED it! The monster-catching system was tons of fun. Honestly a Symphonia 3 on Switch taking after it with that system intact (and with higher production values) would be HUGE for me.

Did you play any other Tales after that?

If you want a Symphonia 3 (Symphonia 2 doesn't exist btw, they didn't give a number to Ratatoskr no Kishi/Dawn of the New World for a reason) you can always go for Phantasia :p

Started with Vesperia back in 09 and was doing a playthrough of it every year up until last year. Its the best game in the series for me. I've played every english Tales game since, even the fan translated Innocence for the DS (which I really liked). Gotta say my love for the series has died down since Graces though. None of the Modern Era games has captured my attention. Berseria did a lot of good things but I pretty much had to force myself to finish the last 10 or so hours of it. I miss the overworld of the older games; it gave me that sense of "I'm going on a huge adventure" feeling. I know jrpgs in general are phasing out world maps these days but I always loved it. It gave us a general idea of how the world is laid out. The large (often) barren areas of the newer tales really turn me off.

The PSP version of Eternia was my intro to the series, and absolutely blew me away at the time. I'd never encountered a JARPG before then, and discovering stuff like secret summons and hi-ougis was awesome.
Story-wise it's probably still my favourite, but gameplay-wise Graces f takes it by a landslide.

I'm bored to tears of the MP-based battle system used in the Team Symphonia & modern-era games. It's so dull and limiting compared to Team Destiny's combo-tastic CC system.

Been waiting on the Absolute Zero translation of Destiny R for about 8 years now.

Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia were the high points of the series for me. For that period I considered the Tales series my favorite JRPG series. Directly after Vesperia the quality of subsequent games made a drastic nose-dive though and it still hasn't fully recovered. I have hopes though that Namco has actually recognized that the series went wrong and what went wrong.
That there isn't already a new mainline Tales announced is kinda reassuring. Take your time, raise the budget, write a good story and characters and realize a beautiful game world. :)

I own the entire series (CE and LE included) sealed. Plus I have opened copies that I play. Vesperia is hands down my favorite. Graces f was also good but as of lately I haven't enjoyed the series. But it's still one of my favorites.

The cast of Abyss sucks, but it's all worth playing for for the NA OP and the orchestral version of Meaning of Birth.

The blatant hypocrisy of Jade and Anise make my blood boil. And I've beaten the game at least twice on 3DS and PS2 each.

Destiny & Eternia: Played these on PSOne back when I was 14. I really forgot what those were about, but I remember that they didn't impress me as much as other JRPG's released in that time. I need to replay them but Namco hasn't put them on PSone classics yet for some reason.

Symponia: Timeless classic. Played on Gamecube with a freeloader, and this single game validated my Gamecube purchase. Lovable characters, great story.

Legendia: After Symphonia, this didn't feel better gameplay wise but music and character design were top notch. I loved how Senel Coolidge reminded me of Nomura's characters, especially Sora.

Phantasia: I don't have much RPG nostalgia on 16-bit consoles, as an European, those consoles meant platformers for me. So without nostalgia goggles, this one felt ancient on GBA. But it had one of the greatest protags, Cress Albane.

The Abyss: Best story, period. Lots of twists and stuff. Flesh and bone real protag Luke, not cliche dummy ones like Yuri or Stahn. But this was too long for its own good. Played both on PS2 and 3DS.

Rebirth: Imported for PSP and understood shit about story, obviously. Still, combat was pretty good.

Vesperia: Amazing art, memorable story, best combat in series ever. Every RPG fan needs to play this. Only downside about this game was Flynn Scifo was straight clone of Guy Cecil from The Abyss. Come on, guys, a little creativity? Best character: Repede.

Graces: Reminds me of The Abyss story wise, twists and lots of emotions. But the game was hardest after Phantasia. I wouldn't have finished it if I didn't buy the level plus DLC.

Xillia & Xillia 2: A little bland, compared to previous entries. Uninteresting story, so-so music. But the world game is set looks beautiful. So does Milla.

Hearts: Played both on DS and Vita and I feel this is the weakest Tales game ever. Story is least interesting in the series and characters are plain annoying, especially Kohak. Combat was much better as 2D on DS, Vita version was an abomination.

Zestiria: Loved the concept of seraphim and their story. Whole element system and weakness and stuff made the combat more fun. Plus this game had more dungeon puzzle which is a big plus.

Berseria: More of the previous game, which is a good thing. Velvet is reminiscent of Milla as Sorey was Jude's. But Velvet truly is the best female protag in whole JRPG genre. Sorry, Lightning.

My top 5 characters from the series:
1- Lloyd Irving
2- Repede (it's a dog)
3- Chloe Valens
4- Cress Albane
5- Velvet

Vesperia was my first entry into the series. It came at the perfect time for me in middle school. I'd initially gotten into gaming as a way to stay in touch with a close friend who'd moved away, but around 13 I was starting to get into anime and screenshots of Vesperia made it look like an interactive anime. I remember visiting my friend in North Carolina, browsing the Xbox store on his console and seeing the demo for Vesperia. I was enthralled and bought the game as soon as I got home. It was honestly my first single-player JRPG and ignited my venture into the genre. I still look back on Vesperia with nothing but love.

So back in the day I really wasn't a JRPG man at all.
Anime visual stylings weren't anything that piqued my interest, turn based battling? pass. The only game that had managed to sneak through my barrier in this state was the original Golden Sun and I think the general ease of combat and psyenergy puzzling dungeons that let that one slip through my barrier.

Still I couldn't help but think I must be missing something. Going through an issue of UK's Nintendo magazine I'd noticed that this Tales of Symphonia game that kept popping up as of late had REAL TIME COMBAT for its battles.
Apparently this was all the trigger I needed to give the game a shot.

While ToS may be trope heavy in a way that JRPG vets wouldn't find surprising at all, well for me a lot of these story beats and overall concepts were new to me. It took me on a sprawling journey, friends revealed themselves to be foes and vice versa, the original endgame of the characters journey was in fact barely the halfway point as an entire other world map revealed itself. The variety in locales, that Sakuraba soundtrack and as a more unique point for Tales, the clumsily implemented yet oh so appreciated multiplayer.

Within a few years I'd played through Symphonia 4 or 5 times, safe to say it was a hit with me.
Alas I never made it far into replaying it these days, the HD version didn't even get me out of Sylvarant but I'll always have a soft spot for Symphonia.
Raine and Zelos were the best.

---

While it could very well have been punched by some ageing itself (even now I can recall the game's combat feeling stiff) Tales of Vesperia is what I consider my favourite Tales title.
The main cast just works together so well, Yuri offered something a bit more interesting than your standard RPG protag as well as being one of the first notable vocal performances I can recall from this Troy Baker chap you may have heard in games a lot these days.
The game has a kid character in Karol who doesn't suck, it's really quite impressive I swear!
Oh and the engrish opening version of Ring a bell is a guilty pleasure.

Last Tales game I played was Xillia, it was okay but I think the games could really do with taking the time out to really focus on making one strong entry than a bunch of middling ones being rapid fired out. Though hearing that the latest is quite solid has me waiting for that tasty price drop.

PS: Abyss sucks, god the characters in that game are booty butt cheeks

It's stuff like that that makes the game hard to replay. The total lack of accountability and the hypocrisy from the cast is just outstanding and a major oversight in the game writing. The cast is pretty solid apart from Anise of course. I really hate Anise so much.

They all deserve as much blame as Luke for what happened in the game but they all just put it on him in the worst possible way It pisses me off so much.

Even Luke himself, his development is like from extreme to another completely skipping the middle ground.

The game itself is actually pretty good but that character writing is a major red flag.

Back in the PS2 era I was just coming off a very strong Star Ocean 3 high, which was my first time with a real time action RPG. Was craving more and I came across a combo video for Tales of The Abyss. I was in awe of what I saw, such a flashy display of combos and rates. I tracked the game down, played it and loved it and have been a Tales fan ever since.

I'd say Abyss is my favorite overall because it was my first with Graces F being high for me in terms of combat and Vesperia being somewhere in the middle.

Tales used to be my favourite series along with Zelda when I was younger. Like most people from Europe, my introduction to the series was Symphonia, and became a fan of the game. At that time I didn't really like RPGs, and my exposure to the genre had mostly been Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Mario RPGs. The amount of content as well as the battle system of Symphonia were something I had not really seen before and I just fell heels over it. Years later I actually found out that it was a series, and gradually got into the older and newer installments. However, after playing most of the titles, I've come to have a mixed opinion on the series as a whole.

On one hand, I like how the series puts a focus on character development, has (usually) a great amount of side content, and I love the battle systems. On the other hand, going back and playing some of the older games and the japanese exclusives has made me see some kind of repetitiveness in the series, with Eternia and Destiny 2 JP in particular being incredibly boring to me.

I especially got burnt out after Zestiria, which was overall a really disapppointed entry to me. So nowadays I've come to care about only a part of the series, while not really caring for the rest. Recently Berseria, while not exactly stellar, has been a step in the right direction for me, so I'm interested in how the next entry will turn out.

As to which one is my favourite, I can't really decide on a single one. Destiny remake, Graces f, Xillia 1/2 and Symphonia are the ones I'm the most fond of.

I've been playing the Tales games since the Super Famicom because my sister has always been really into them. They never really clicked with me until Rebirth, I think. At least, that's when I realized I could be a "Tales fan." And it also began the trend of my favorite Tales games being the ones with the worst stories. These days, I mostly avoid Tales conversations because I don't want to hear about how you think Graces F is a bad game just because the story isn't good.

Man, the dualizer needs to make a comeback. So ludicrously addictive to cook and craft in that game.
I also really liked the characters. Especially Malik.

Eternia was, is and always will be the ONLY Tales game that is worth my time, attention and fervor. Everything else pales in comparison and is waste in my opinion. Well, everything AFTER that game to be fair.

Same loved Eternia the best, but I always enjoyed the other Tales games.

Fuck the current direction of the series. While previous games often had some kind of art direction that would hide the games' weak tech and still make them look great, the new games just wallow in the fact that they are low budget. They are completely unpleasant to look at. I also prefer the character designs of Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia, which was the only kind of somewhat dumb design that was bearable to me. The new world traversal and lack of puzzles is also a turnoff nowadays.

I regret selling my ToP GBA port back in the day before giving it a proper chance, but I'll try to get back into the 2D series with Eternia at some point.

I keep my Xbox 360 plugged in and ready to go for 2 games : Ninja Gaiden 2 and Tales of Vesperia. I loved Yuri Lowell as a character and was a breath of fresh air as a protagonist with a darker view of the world and how to change it with his own ideas. Great game, solids gameplay mechanics. What I would give for a PS4 rerelease of the Japan exclusive PS3 version...

Ah now I want to replay it again. Maybe after I platinum KH2.

Symphonia was the first one i played and still my favorite. looking back some of the twists are real obvious but kid me was like wtf.
Plus i think Lylod is one of the better "straightfoward" heroes you can get in jrpgs. Hated what the sequel did to his character.

Destiny: Director Cut is the best Tales all around.

Eternia is the best among localized ones. Most underrated too. People often bring up Vesperia, Graces, Symphonia and Abyss, but I think Eternia is still better than them.

I liked Destiny on the PS1 and Vesperia on 360. Didn't care much for any of the others (Phantasia, Symphonia, Hearts, Abyss, Eternia) and have entirely lost interest in the series.

There is many entries I have not played, but out of those I have, Abyss is far and away my favorite. The game's not perfect - the final few hours consist mainly of pointless backtrack, despite the game's length up to that point not leaving anything to be desired. And the cast is a double-edged sword, blaming Luke for all the mistakes they make while never being called out on it. But the story and the antagonist still captivated me unlike any of the others in the series.

My least-favorite, on the other hand, is Graces. It takes away everything that makes a Tales game enjoyable to me. The world consists of countries that couldn't have less in common, and might as well exist in different continuities altogether. Subsequently, the story is told through a number of standalone arcs I wondered how they were even related to the plot. And all they boil down to in the end is that, oh no, we didn't catch Richard again. Story-wise the game felt like a massive waste of time.

The biggest offender though, that was their streamlining of the sidequests. These are supposed to be integrated into the world organically, and finding one always brings a smile to my face. It's my favorite aspect of the Tales series. It makes their worlds feel alive. But in Graces, you grab the quest from the questboard, and it takes me right out of it.

I disliked the game so much, I quit somewhere towards the end and lost the courage to play Tales games for years after that.

Vesperia is one of my most wanted games to play since it came out, but I can't be bothered to get a 360 just for it alone (plus maybe Lost Odyssey). Perhaps the time to cave in comes if there's a drought at the start of next gen or something...

Yep. I mean most of the story in Tales games are kinda garbage (with Rebirth being so garbage it's almost art). I'd say Vesperia is probably the one that is known to have one of the best stories in the series by fans and even that has a completely uninspired 3rd act.

I'm in this series for the gameplay so that's why Destiny remake and Graces are the best to me.

Started with Destiny PS1, I liked it because it was real-time but I didn't really like Tales until Eternia, which is still a top 5 favourite Tales game for me. Since then I've basically played every main entry except Legendia and Innocence. I still wish Eternia had a Destiny Director's Cut calibre remake, even though I know it's basically never going to happen...

Phantasia: Only played the GBA version, and a bit of the X version included in Narikiri Dungeon X. The WHAT THE HECK IS THAT? speech is still quoted repeatedly in our group.

Destiny PS1: I finished it as a kid but that was only before I experienced Eternia, after which I could never play it again.

Eternia: I still replay this game about once a year, and it's always installed on my Vita. I always liked how Reid tried to do the "sensible" thing at first and leave the adventuring to people more qualified, like the royal knights. It didn't work out, but at least he tried! The battle system is simple but snappy, I really wish there was a remake so characters that aren't Reid or maybe Farah get to be more fun to play.

Narikiri Dungeon 2/3: I liked these for the novelty of seeing Tales characters interact, and since the GBA was region free, these games got me started on learning Japanese. I probably wouldn't play them again though.

Destiny 2: A blazing fast, pretty fun battle system, but with some obnoxious baggage like accuracy being mandatory to actually do anything as melee and grade being notoriously hard to get. The PSP version at least fixes the grade issue, as well as making titles better overall IIRC.

Symphonia: I spent a lot of time on this game, like 120+ hours or something, but in retrospect I don't think it was really worth it. I think the novelty of playing a Tales game on the Gamecube skewed my playtime a lot, since I don't really look back fondly on it nowadays.

Rebirth: Oh man, this game is great. I probably spent like 300 hours on this including the PSP version and various multiplayer runs. I will never forgive Tempest for killing off(?) the 3 line battle system. I think the biggest complaint we had was that Annie didn't seem all that great(?), aside from Rise Elixir which is probably the most useful ability in the game.

Abyss: I've only played this game through about twice. It's ok, though it drags on pretty long.

Destiny Remake Director's Cut: This game is probably the game that other Tales games will forever be judged by. The battle system is flexible, casting is actually fun, it has Philia in it, and multiplayer runs are great. The main problems with this game are that infinites are way too easy(Johnny alone can infinite with one move!) and the weakness system is too punishing, sometimes making characters completely useless in certain fights. It still has a bunch of great boss fights that our group replays from time to time though, like Ilene. Including multiplayer runs, probably another 300+ hour game for me. If there was a balance patch that somehow made infinites more balanced and made it so hitting an enemy resistance in a friend's combo didn't mess up the combo we'd probably never stop playing it. Oh, and maybe reducing the amount of super meter you get on Chaos for blocking, and making bursting easier to use.

Tales of Vesperia: I liked Estellise and Repede. Otherwise, the game didn't really stand out to me, it felt like a slower, less broken Abyss. Grinding the altered artes or w/e was pretty annoying. I've only played the PS3 version.

Tales of Hearts DS: I liked the game overall, but for some reason I always get distracted before finishing it. Assists are pretty neat.

Tales of Graces F: At first, I really liked this game but soon enough the comparisons to Destiny set in. CC regeneration speed in this game is ridiculously slow compared to Destiny! Also, combos were forever a mystery for us, since sometimes they would work and sometimes the enemy would inexplicably armor through an attack and counter, which on Chaos would usually instant kill you. The Accel skills were fun though, time stop in particular saved a lot of runs.

Narikiri Dungeon X: I never finished it, but it didn't seem all that bad and it also included a version of Tales of Phantasia without spell freeze, which sounds pretty great to me.

Xillia: When I first played this game, I flipped a coin to see which route I would play first and got Milla. A big mistake since I missed a bunch of important scenes...Anyway, this game was pretty disappointing, luckily Xillia 2 came out.

Xillia 2: IMO, an improvement to Xillia in almost every way, but still has some things that prevent me from playing it as much as Destiny DC and Rebirth. Character locked parties for story chapters along with no narikiris is the major one, we tend to plan our multiplayer runs around playing certain characters and it's always a bummer when you don't get to play your favourite anymore. It also has a similar issue with Destiny where elemental coverage determines how "good" a character is, but at least with might charge 3 they get to actually do stuff so it's not a huge loss. Ludger install is also ridiculously good so we soft-ban it, lol.

Zestiria: I liked the vibe, the music, the characters were ok, but the systems made it a one and done game for me.

Berseria: At first we really liked the game, until we realized that to get higher max cubes, you needed to grind gear and then things went downhill. Losing cubes for getting hit by an ailment or crit is also really punishing and gaining cubes isn't particularly common without successful parries, so sometimes people will just get knocked down to one cube and won't recover for awhile which stinks.

Every time a new Tales game is announced I wonder if this'll be the one to surpass Destiny DC, and every time I play it I'm disappointed. I have a huge preference for 2D Tales and every new announcement is just reaffirmation that 2D Tales is forever dead :(

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
I dislike Emil, but I love Ratatosk lol. Would have paired him with Marta instead.

More or less the same for me, I also have a love hate relationship with emil/ratatosk's clothes, it looks cool from the feet up and then you get to his shoulders and then you wonder if the designers were letting a fetish takeover

Remake Destiny's mechanics are so good. The element system was pretty much high-speed Pokemon since every attack had one or two elements and most every enemy had at least one resistance and weakness. Enemies armored through attacks that hit their resistance but we instantly staggered by their weakness, which opened them up to be comboed by anything else afterwards, and the same applied to your party. There were cool little things like how if you used multiple spells in a combo each successive one would have increasingly reduced casting time.

The only things that really bugged me were that the game was really stingy with letting you pick new game plus bonuses, requiring multiple playthroughs and higher difficulties to get more points to use on it, and this game was not short or easy. The other thing was that the bonus dungeon was a bunch of really drab areas where all the enemies were super powerful but all had the same weakness for each floor, compared to the original version, which was a total recreation of Tower of Druaga.

I've been playing the Tales games since the Super Famicom because my sister has always been really into them. They never really clicked with me until Rebirth, I think. At least, that's when I realized I could be a "Tales fan." And it also began the trend of my favorite Tales games being the ones with the worst stories. These days, I mostly avoid Tales conversations because I don't want to hear about how you think Graces F is a bad game just because the story isn't good.

i might hate the story of Graces F with a passion (as my old thread pointed out), but i'll defend that combat system until the day i die

Berseria is amazing pretty much only for the story and characters, but it really highlights how stale some of the other Tales elements are.

It has REALLY good characters, honestly my favorite RPG cast in what feels like decades. More than even the Persona crew. Mostly this is helped by the absolutely absurd 10 fucking hours! worth of skits. Nothing drives a story forward more than making the player care for and invested in the outcome of everyone's struggles and Berseria does it the best of any of the Tales games.

The combat though gets super tedious, super fast unless you're on higher difficulties. And then it's sorta "stunlock enemy and kill it" or get stunlocked BY the enemy and caught in an endless loop of running around the arena long enough to use life bottles on everyone. It boggles my mind that even w/ Berseria trying to add stuff like in-battle healing you still spend most of your time spamming items and apple gels in hard fights. Like, who the hell likes drip feeding Life Bottles to your CPU controlled characters? They should be able to design a way around this by now.

Berseria's world is even more big, flat and empty. Everything is so pointless expansive and your walk speed is so pointlessly slow. Why did we get a hoverboard like halfway through the damn game? What exactly was wrong with the small zones with occasional sprawling dungeons with zelda-lite elements of old Tales games that they had to replace it with big empty temples and bigger empty landscapes?

And the music is just droning and uninteresting. They really gotta let Sakuraba take a vacation or give him full creative direction or something cause whatever it is ain't working right now.

I first got interested in the Tales series when I saw a friend playing Tales of Vesperia at his house.

Once I got home, I only had a PS2, so I found and picked up a used copy of Tales of the Abyss. Absolutely loved it. Beat the entirety of the game. I played the series in this order:

Abyss: As mentioned, I loved this game. It was my first Tales game and at that point the only JRPGs I knew were turn based, so seeing a RPG that kinda played like Smash really excited me. I also liked the characters for the most part and the character change Luke went through. Yeah, the characters were assholes to each other, but I actually like that (I tend to prefer casts growing to like each other rather than getting along automatically). I will say that the way the characters acted during Luke's big screw up was rage inducing considering the circumstances, but that's why they're assholes I guess. It also helped with Luke's character growth, so it worked out in the end. The plot was cool, though a little confusing with all the terminology it was constantly throwing around (FONONS FONONS FONONS). The way the game handled sidequests was weird though, needed a walkthrough to help with that.

Graces: Played this a while after Abyss since I played Abyss during the Tales drought. Preordered it, and beat the entire game. Like the combat a lot, but that was pretty much it. I hated a majority of the characters, especially Assbel, the plot was a big bowl of nothing, and none of the music in the game stood out to me. I found the humor was good at least, so there's that. Preordered Xillia after that, hoping for it to be better than Graces.

Xillia: And what do you know, it was better that Graces (in my eyes). I like the entirety of the cast, even Alvin. Liked the plot (this was my 3rd Tales game, so at the time I didn't know how many plot elements Xillia just reused from previous games). The combat was back the Abyss-like but with added dual attacks that were cool to pull off. I didn't even mind the lack of a world map since at this point, the only Tales game I had played with a world map was Abyss. Despite lots of people not liking this game, I really enjoyed it.

Xillia 2: The cracks were starting to show for me here. Went into Xillia 2 excited, only for me to get hit with a lot of elements I hated. There was barely any new content outside of a few new areas, a doubt system that only existed to extend the game's length, Ludger not speaking felt weird since he wasn't really a self-insert character, the weird limitations on who could be on your party, and the way some of the previous Xillia cast acted in some scenes made them come off as assholes (and not intentionally like in Abyss). However, the plot was the best of the series for me at that point (though I wish they dove into how much of a mass murderer Ludger was). I also like Elle's relationship with the cast and some scenes with her that dealt with loss. Was very touching. Also, I nearly forget any of my complaints when I start playing as Ludger. He's busted as shit, but he's the most fun I've had with a Tales character combat wise (previously it was Hubert in Graces f).

Vesperia: Bought a used 360 just for this game, since I heard so many good things about it. The game answered my expectations. It is my favorite in the series. Yuri was my favorite JRPG protagonist since at that point, the only JRPGs I had played were teenagers who were either whiny or made bad decisions. It was the best looking of the series, and the cast was overall the most likable of the series (edging out the Xillia cast since at least there was no stupid love triangle involved). I also like the plot until it shit the bed in the 3rd act. I have since traded the console and game back into gamestop, but I own a PS3 version of the game and might try modding my PS3 at some point to try and get the fan patch working (or wait for an emulator).

Hearts R: I took me a while to beat this game. I liked it as first, but kinda go bored with it. Went back to finish it eventually. It was alright. I like the combat for what it was, but the plot was kinda meh. Not as bad as Graces plot, but nothing really stood out to me and at this point the whole "dual worlds" was starting to wear thin. The translation was all over the place and it was weird have the main character clearly be called "Shing" in spoken dialogue, but called Kor. Cast was alright, though going back to stupid teenager who makes bad decisions after playing Vesperia and Xillia 2 was a disappointment. Combat was fun since it was a faster version of the Abyss-Vesperia-Xillia combat. It was the reason I kept on playing since I didn't care about the plot. Don't regret playing it, but it doesn't really stand out to be honest.

Zestiria: Oh boy. The first Tales game I couldn't bring myself to finish. I liked half the cast for the most part (Sorey, Mikleo, Edna). The music was fantastic, and having an open world Tales game was interesting for the most part. That's where my praises end though. I strongly disliked the equipment system, and while I could have just lowered the difficulty and ignored the equipment system, I didn't do that. This lead to the game just not being fun to play, on top of the weird camera. Armatization was fun, but I felt too many enemy encounters relied too hard on using it. In term of plot and characters, I appreciated how much lore seemed to go into how the world worked, but the plot landed flat a lot of times. Characters acted in strange ways a lot of the time that didn't make a lot of sense. Rose's character and connection to the plot was all over the place, and while I found Alisha to be boring, her just disappearing from the plot was weird and felt like a product of the game development rather than a story reason. Normally I wouldn't notice something like that, but it was so jarring that it kinda took me out of the story. The way the game just told you to go find the 4 temples based off a map you couldn't easily teleport to and the weird orb collection thing being tied to progressing the plot didn't help either. At some point, I want to try going back to the game, but I might just watch the anime instead.

Berseria: Had low expectation, especially after seeing that it was a prequel to Zestira, but was pleasantly surprised. The cast, while not my favorite, really resonated with me with how "anti-hero" they were. I like the whole main party, with Laphicet being the surprise character for me. Dude really steps it up by the end of the game. They were also Abyss levels of assholes to each other, which was justified for plot reasons. The combat, while not as good as Graces or even Xillia 2, was more fun that Zestira, so there was that at least. Also the first time I had fun playing a caster character. The plot was cool, though the reveals in terms of the main antagonist at the beginning of the 3rd act were pretty weak. Tales games having weak 3rd acts seems to be a thing. Wish they had the villain be somewhat justified in his actions, so it would be a cool parallel with the main cast pretty much just being selfish. But no, they have to be the actual good guys at the end due to the antagonists all being cartoonishly evil by the end. All and all, I really like this game, and while I won't say it's a "return to form", I find no fault when people say it's the best game since Vesperia.

Tales of Link: Not sure if this counts, it probably doesn't, but I did end up loving the series enough to but a shitton of time and money into the gacha game. The gameplay is mediocre, the gambling aspect is transparent as all hell, and it can be a little to fanservicy at times (though FEH and F/GO showed me that gacha games can be way worse in this aspect), but I am still playing it daily at this point for over a year, so the got me.

All and all this would be my personal rating for each game:

1. Vesperia
2. Abyss
3. Berseria (barely below Abyss)
4. Xillia
5. Xillia 2
6. Hearts R
7. Graces f
8. Zestiria

Yeah, but they only restore 1 and IIRC they're kind of hard to get, aren't they? Or at least, I don't remember being able to buy any from a shop?

Remake Destiny's mechanics are so good. The element system was pretty much high-speed Pokemon since every attack had one or two elements and most every enemy had at least one resistance and weakness. Enemies armored through attacks that hit their resistance but we instantly staggered by their weakness, which opened them up to be comboed by anything else afterwards, and the same applied to your party.

The thing about Destiny DC's weakness system is that it's pretty polarizing: if your character hits weak points they're amazing, if they mainly hit resistances they're basically useless for the fight. Because of this, elemental spread on character movesets becomes really important, and quite a few characters get the short end of the stick(Kongman, Mary, Johnny) compared to characters with more coverage like Stahn, Philia, Leon, etc. Also unlike Xillia 2, IIRC if you hit a resistance during your combo it breaks the combo, so it limits your combo potential and you end up repeating effective moves rather than using more of your character's skillset. Other party members who only hit resistances also can't join in on your weak point combo, since their attack triggers the resistance and it breaks the combo too. It also doesn't help that the game only lets you map 6 attacks at a time...

Edit: Also, sometimes bosses have only resistances and 0 weaknesses, which is also sad :(

Pascal is my favorite character in the series and Graces is one of my favorite games in the series ( I also like Symphonia and Phantasia)

I had no idea what I was getting into back when I just had a GameCube and was a poor young adult, but I played Symphonia three times straight through.

And now I want to again. 😒

First game I played was Phantasia (SNES). I loved it. It was beautiful, had unique combat (at the time), wonderful soundtrack, etc.

Since then, I've played most of the others, but each one becomes less and less interesting, and they don't wow me like Phantasia did. I'm burned out. My other favorites (besides Phantasia) are Abyss and Vesperia.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Destiny PSX was my first entry and i fell in love.

Imported Phantasia PSX and was stunned it never got localized.

Enjoyed most of the entries since with Vesperia standing the highest. Abyss comes close despite the world lore being total nonsense. (There are several entries I've not played like all the portables, legendia, graces, and xillia 2)

Berseria had a fun cast and some nice trope shifts, but the combat was a letdown. Just not mechanically interesting despite how dense it appeared to be.
