Director of marketing???? So PR

Ok Planning then , I would imagine that involves launch, "marketing" and product perception eg PR

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Dude is a marketer, not a developer. He gets paid to market. Marketing is manipulating perceptions of people in order to get them to buy things.

You're avoiding the question. What other developers on here are being paid to manipulate us?

It's just a mistake, as you can see if you read the actual resume he took on a new position in 2009.

haha, ok then.

Director Of Marketing
Microsoft

Public Company; 10,001+ employees; MSFT; Computer Software industry

October 2000 – Present (13 years)

Owned Platform Hardware, Accessories, and Third Party Marketing for Xbox. Drove marketing plans for all global Platform initiatives from the original Xbox console, Xbox 360, and Kinect. Managed the product roadmap and console bundles, SKU management, and Special Edition strategy for all Console HW and Accessories.

btw, he describes his position as

Lol...

Here's a hint, you're wrong.

Product Planning Division.

Also, marketing dept. at companies are not what most people think. PR is usually a separate, but usually close to marketing, department. Marketing is a lot more about strategy, funding, and consumer analysis. If you ever learn about corporate marketing and have the chance to try out SABRE (simulation program), you'll learn a lot about what companies actually do in their marketing department.

Wow, some Sony butthurt is in the house ! I can see why some say Sessler is a Microsoft lover because for many times he defends the brand with weak arguments but to say he's a shill is going a bit far. I love Sessler, i think he does a great job and unlike many fanboys, he doesn't view videogames in one side.

I think the interview was great, i want to buy an Xbox One, the system will be great no doubt, not sure about day one yet though... gimme a free game like the Europeans and i'm down !!!

Saying things like this makes you look just as bad as the "fanboys".

Oh, so everybody is a marketer that suggests anything. If I told you GTA V is awesome and you should pick it up, I'm a marketer? If I tell a client of ours that I think they should be using a certain module instead of another for our software, I'm a marketer now?

What about game recommendation threads? All marketers?

That is like saying a writer is "somebody who writes stories"

I walked into a store. I decided to purchase a Twix because it's one of the best candy bars I have ever had. You should too.

There, I'm a marketer AND a writer!

Just because somebody speaks positively about something and may want you to also think positively about it, doesn't make them a marketing shill (emphasis on shill since he is obviously, in relation or part of their marketing department or has communication with them).

I also think it's fucking hilarious of what people expect these higher ups in corporations need to "act like".

Its no bad thing that Albert is on here or any other developer, no one is going to talk negatively about the "product" they represent, sales guys don't do it.

If Sony where having a hard time in the market place they would be on Gaf and other forums, fighting off anything that can harm a product. Its just something that has to be considered

On that note I wish Sony would stop being so silent, there are things I want to know about the PS4 , I wish they would "share" more

Also:
First, people should understand – I don’t always know every detail happening with the program. Even though I run Product Planning (I'm not in PR!), that means we set the stage early for the features and HW, but a lot happens going through the development process. I stay very close as we approach launch, but I don’t always know the specifics when things change, so sometimes (frequently) I have to ask someone on the team. I also don’t run PR or Marketing, so I don’t see every piece of material that makes it to the public.

Are you actually arguing he's in marketing? Because he most certainly is not. Beyond the fact you clearly have no idea what marketing means at this level, he is not in that department.

Am I actually arguing that a guy with the title 'director of marketing' isn't in the business of marketing with people?

Where is that twilight zone gif.

Sessler has lost pretty much all my respect ever since the God of War overreaction. He then went on to defend every last thing MS did, while at the same time spreading misinformation (remember the whole PS4 + PSplus thing while ignoring XBLG?). I'm honestly amazed at how much his Xbox bias has shown lately and I refuse to give him any more views. Shame really, he used to be good. Hopefully he fixes his act.

Manipulation leads to sales, so I suppose if MS or Sony sell product and meet targets then there would be a bonus structure in place.

I think its naïve to think any type of PR / marketing on forums doesn't go on.

Its PR in itself much like the Sony guys being so approachable on Twitter

Can you back what you're saying? In linkedin it says he works also as "Director Of Marketing"

Guess what, social media can be wrong?? He just hasn't updated his page in a long time.

Neither have I.

It means he did not mark an end date when he added his current position.

What does "October 2009 – Present (3 years 11 months)" mean to you?

He has more than one title. Actually, I guess people don't know that executives often have multiple titles and responsibilities. There you learned something today.

What does mean?

You do realize LinkedIn isn't directly tied to your current company's HR department right? People do forget to update it, or don't update it until they are ready to leave a company.

I can't believe we're arguing over what this guy does instead of discussing a solid interview.

What am I reading? Are you suggesting that the ex Director of Marketing who is now running Product Planning receives a bonus that links his posts on an online message board to Xbox sales?

What the flying fuck?

I like the Porsche versus Corvette comparison. I don't think they should be trying to claim in any vague way that the Xbox One will have better graphics than the PS4. Now maybe they can claim it can keep up but lets not go overboard.

ill trust his linkedin

Oh yes, don't listen to his message at all because he used to be in Marketing and he may be trying to make you LIKE THE XBOX ONE. Oh man, this guy here!

WHOA.gif

This thread is funny, solid interview overall but people are worried he's trying to manipulate us. Everyone from every business on Earth is trying to get you to buy their products. I mean, seriously.

Of course. Obviously someone that works for the company is going to want to portray their products in the best possible light but there is a large gap between wanting to communicate good things about your product with parts of your customer base and trying to manipulate people. Communication in and of itself is not something that should be criticized and dismissed simply because of where it's coming from.

ill trust his linkedin

What, do you need freaking God himself, or Bishop, to come smack someone around so people will stop being this obtuse.

The man himself has said what his title is...

You can even GOOGLE it. Oh my, sometimes on GAF...

Seriously, I haven't updated my LinkedIn page in over 2 and half years either.

He does not have more than one title. Perhaps you should spend less time trying to prove someone is lying about their position and more time learning how to distinguish between the past and present tenses. It will help you recognize simple oversights like this in the future.
