The first one is awfully pricey nowadays. Or, more accurately, pricey for a few year old game.

Are you sure? Gamestop shows that the game is only $9.99 used, and there seem to be plenty of copies in the Gamestops near my area.

Well there was the GameBoy WARS series (three games) which was by Hudson, but that was it. They weren't that great compared to the IntSys developed games (obviously).

I thought I read about a Hudson developed Super Famicom Wars.

You're out of your goddamn mind. They're not exactly polar ends of the spectrum or anything, but the style is different by much more than 'a few more folds in their clothing'. The difference is more akin to, say, Batman the Animated Series vs. Batman drawn by Jim Lee. Thematically they may be conveying the same thing, but you'd have to be a flippin' moron to confuse the two styles.
I'm not "confusing" the two styles. I already noted one difference (and I never said there were only a few more folds in their clothing, so I don't know where you got that) and I could probably note more if I wanted to. Like the lines of Jake's neck being done with shadows while Ed's are lines.

Anyway, my only point was what I kind of opened my post with, when I said that "I'm really not seeing what most of you are seeing as far as the art direction goes."

And by this I mean that, unlike others in this thread, I'm not looking at the new art and thinking Is this really Advance Wars? or Looks like Front Mission or What an unexpected, entirely unprecedented shift for Nintendo/Intelligent Systems or Kind of a combination of BW and AW or The old art style is gone forever now or anything like that.
I first saw it and the only thing I thought was "Nice, Advance Wars is back."

In any case, maybe this is a pointless discussion anyway. If others like the art because it seems entirely different to them and I like the art because to me it seems to be more than enough of the same, perhaps that's all that matters.

What seems to be apparent is that IS looks to be starting the series anew. New nations, new characters, new graphics etc. I dont care about having the old characters return, just as long as we get identical versions of the best characters in.
This is the true double-edged sword.

If there's nobody with (for example) the ability to quickly capture territories, that would be a waste; if there is, that would be a clone. If there's nobody who can repair 3 HP per day, that would be a missed opportunity; if there is, that would be a clone.
And on and on and on. An air specialist. A naval specialist, a land specialist, a direct and an indirect, an infantry specialist, a character with unpenalized or at least less penalized terrain movement. Someone with transport movement bonuses. A kamikaze with offense boosts in exchange for defense loss-. (Yes, I know that defense is better than offense in AW because it doesn't decrease with the HP of the unit. Yes, Grimm sucked. Maybe the new attempt would be balanced better.)

But if all that's the case, what was the point of starting anew to begin with? If this Advance Wars is basically starting a new series, then why should the new characters be the same as the old with a new coat of paint?
I don't know; I honestly can't decide either way how I want it to go. I do love familiarity in long-standing series and defend it all the time (Mega Man shouldn't change, Metroid is better in 2D, we don't need a mature Zelda where Link and/or Zelda dies at the end, Dragon Quest should remain turn-based, etc.), so I'll probably be happy whichever way it goes. I just wonder if either way is truly the way it'd be better off.

Anyway, what am I getting ponderous about? This is Advance Wars. Hype away. Best DS game of 2008 almost no doubt. :D

The original Wars games weren't that hot period. It took a couple of tries before they got it just right. The GBA was the homecoming.

It definitely looks more like Front Mission than WARS

Makes me pine for what we might see if Square actually let some of their teams make a new Front Mission game for the DS instead of sticking them on constantly porting old FM games.

My want for this is right up there with Fire Emblem. Blech!

Well, had a chance to look at the pics.

AWDS2 HHGOTY 2008!

Also I wouldn't half mind if we could unlock the Old Guard to play here. The juxtaposition between their personalities and the scenario here would just be awesome.

Ed looks like he just came from the office and throw on a coat to chat with the other guy.

Looks good and I look forward to the soundtrack.

Anyone hear anything about online multiplay?

I would love to play this sucker online.

Heh, I hate it when people disconnect after half an hour long Pokemon battles. I can't imagine people disconnecting after a 3 hour AW battle.

Woah, I seriously did not expect to see screens already :D

It looks fantastic. I like the new characters and battle animations and the gameplay screams Advance Wars with a slightly different stylish look. Which is awesome. I hope there is online (versus and level editor with friends only so no fear off disconnecters). That would make it maybe the best DS game ever.

That's what NeoGAF is for, it's tournament-age time

If Apollo Justice doesn't come out in 2008, yeah.

Sorry, forgot on-topic.

I like the battle scenes, I'm just wondering how the character portraits will look (unless I missed a screen with them?).

EDIT: Oh man, saw the characters, they look great.

To anyone who's played it, is Ling the main character? If so, she and Andy would be great applicants for SSBB :D

Sorry, but Apollo Justice doesn't have 100+ hours of replay value.

Actually, it's not even replay value, considering I went through every map in AWDS once and clocked 102 hours or so.

No, the lead is probably the Shonen Jump ripoff.

Come on, guys don't like playing as girls, just look at all the Nintendo fanboys who ripped me to shreds for saying I want another girl in brawl.

:D

Yes - and that way we can still have the old BGMs, too.

Actually, although this is by far the most dramatic change for the visual look of the game assets, there might actually be a bigger discrepancy between the character art for the original and AWDS than there is between AWDS and this game. There's been a steady movement away from the most simplistic and caricaturistic aspects of the art style starting in AW2, to be honest.

I mean, yeah, Jess has a giant pencil, but compare the way her face and clothes are drawn to Drake and Eagle's designs.

I actually would like to see more girls in SSBB, too. Then again, I'm not really considering myself a fanboy, either....

Every PWAA game has had 100+ hours of replay, so why not AJAA?

I like the moderately different art style. Certainly not horrible like I originally feared. I really like the battle scene sprite-on-3d stuff they've got going on. And if it carries over the Advance Wars gameplay... well, I'm sold.

I'm only one game shy of declaring it the GOTY 2008 period. :D

I want them back for the same reasons you guys listed. Their music is so good that I'd welcome them back even if the way to get them in there was as corny as calling them computer simulations of past heroes.

See, this I agree with. Kanbei being probably the single strongest example, going from this in AW1...

...to this in AWDS:

This is why I say I'm not really phased by the art change at all. I've already seen (or at least perceived there to be) greater changes from the same series.

We don't know about WFC play yet. I imagine it won't take too long for Advance Wars to make it to NA since it is Advance Wars's primary market
