I have one and I'm interested! I just need to get a better connection -_-

Where do you live? Connection between mainland peers is always good and Mario Kart is P2P. Hell, I can reliably push 150-200Mbps to US and europe with 130-180ms latency, that is with Shanghai Telecom fiber.

Knowing the language helps a lot, but I came with zero Chinese skills and was fine. It's 2015, you have a smartphone, you don't even need a translation app, just google bing image search what you're looking for/need and show it to people. I mean sure, if you want to discuss abstract concept like the dualism of human nature, it might be a tad hard to find an image that convey that, but really now, how often do you really need that when you're traveling?

And just so we're clear, I totally agree that anyone that can should try to learn some Chinese before traveling China, and again, it will no doubt help make trip more enjoyable, I just don't want people to think that you must know the language, it should absolutely not be a barrier.

p.s.
On the other hand, you sometime meet people who lived here for years and can't speak a word of Chinese, WhatsWrongWithYou.gif

Pretty much agree with all of this. I too came over with zero knowledge of Mandarin and managed to survive, but I wish I could motivate myself to study more. I haven't found a method that sticks with me yet plus I'm super lazy. I can absolutely say that my peers with a functional knowledge of Mandarin are having a different experience from me, for better or worse (mostly better). I don't fall in the 'been here for years and refuse to learn' category, but I feel like I should know more by now even though I haven't REALLY studied. I keep falling back on the dialect excuse - they use Sichuanhua not Putonghua! - when I should just be cramming vocabulary. I think I'll try my hand at Anki next.

I can barely connect to eshop half the time. I'm in Shanghai. I've tried to get online on Mario Kart and it doesn't work. China Telecom.

There is really no substitution for going to language school, I'm lucky enough to have my work pay for that.
Okay, maybe having a Chinese girlfriend, but that's not an option for me :).

As far as free apps go, this is probably the best one I've found thus far. Great way to practice vocabulary on the go -- both characters and pinyin.

Weird, I lived 3 years in Beijing and been to the majority of coastal cities, and so far Shanghai has the best internet if you are on China Mobile or Telecom fiber.

My typical speeds to US and EU are averaging 250-300Mbps, Chinese mainland network pushes up to 900-950Mbps with latency of 15-60ms to any part of China. I am on 200Mbps plan with 国际精品网. You need to jump through hoops to get 国际精品网, since it must be post-servince monthly billing contract, which 200Mbps is not available as (only as pre-paid per year in advance). Then you switch from 100Mbps or whatever yout speeds were to 200Mbps plan and pay for a year. You will still get monthly bills, but they will only include fee for 国际精品网.

Edit: just checked speeds to US West Coast, 250-500Mbps depending on the server I chose (SF, LA or SD). There is no way you would have problems playing with people from China or Asia in general.

Fuck my life. I have 26 days of teaching in a row because of "make up days" for teacher training and also have another job on Sundays. Fresh blood is arriving tomorrow in the form of a new teacher from England, so at least I have somebody I can force to drink with me for a few days a week...

Oh yeah, my Nintendo ID is: sasimirobot
lets play some Mario Kart bitches!

edit: when I showed the banner to my GF, she was, "whats the problem?".

Honestly I don't stream videos or play online games ever so I never really paid attention to the speed. My landlord set up the internet and paid for it. It took me like 3 days to download the Bayo 2 demo though last year. I'll try to get on Mario Kart this weekend and see if I can get online. If not, oh well. I'm all about that local multiplayer anyway.

That's all you can get normally. Consoles are a very market most of the time. They aren't "supposed" to be sold here. So you have to find an electronic market where you live and buy from them.

The ban on consoles has only recently be lifted, (not that the ban stopped consoles from being sold in various electronic markets), but so far the only console that seems to be officially allowed to be sold is the Xbox One. I've seen that one in the Sunning stores when I go in with a pitiful selection of games.

curious how hot the new systems are on the black market. 360s ps2s ds's were super hot due to how easy they were to pirate games on.

Any PS4 owners? Post your tag and I'll add ya.

On the topic of internet, mine blows. I think I have 2 down and 1 up. It's free with the apartment, but one of these days I'll break down and get a China Mobile bundle or something.

so i've been here a month, it's been rather crazy, i got broadband and stuff set up, even if it's damn slow (10mbps)but it works and my homemade shadowsocks server seems to bypass the gfw when i need to use fb or google play store

my job is good, im teaching the same kids 3-4.5 hours a day and iget on great with colleagues

my only downside is that my chinese is godawful, and even people who understand english, dont understand my london accent haha the kids are picking up my dialect in their chemistry lessons, they're now saying wart-ar rather than water haha

im trying to brute force the memrise 1000 chinese common words and characters, good thing i was learning japanese on and off for a few years so can guess menus a lot, any other good sites to use?

im loving it here though!

I've heard hackingchinese.com is a good resource. And Pleco is a good app to have on your mobile devices, especially its flashcard function.

Just speaking from my own experience, I had formal classes before I started self-studying, and I think it helps a lot. The classes just force you to have a solid base of grammar, tones, etc. and then after that you are basically just adding vocabulary which you can do on your own somewhat organically ("Never heard/seen that word before, let me add it to my flashcard list").

So, mandarin chinese language have 4 tones right? and...
if you say the same sound or syllable 4 times, but everytime,
you use a different tone, you will have 4 different meanings?
is this correct?

My question is about chinese songs, if the singer has to sing
a really long note (whole note or half note) and ,in this note,
the song uses a 4th tone word (the short and loud tone),
but if you make it long, it will sound like the first tone (the flat tone)
and the syllable will have a different meaning.

So, how the hell people understand chinese songs if music
interfere with tone rules?

Context. Many words are actual a pair or characters.
Also everything is subtitled because people speak different dialects.

Popping in to say thanks for that app rec :) I downloaded it when you posted it, and it's been really helpful so far. Definitely the best app I've tried yet, and I'm pretty sure I've been through the mill and back again.

The only other app I've found that compared was a flash card one by Declan Software that doesn't seem to be on the App Store anymore (in Canada, at least). It was $14, but the freebie was great as well.

BUT YEAH great recommendation!

I see a few IT guys here, that's great. I plan on getting a new laptop in a few months or so, as I really need one, but what places are good to shop around in Beijing? How about amazon.cn? This will be my first solid computer, and I want it to last. What brands are recommended nowadays? I'm thinking HP or Asus. And as a win 7 32 user, should I go with windows 8? Or switch to win 7 64? I haven't had any issues with 7, so I'm wondering on the upsides of 8 and program compatibility (which will be an issue switching to 64 bit anyway). Sorry for the all the questions, and thanks for any help. I should mention I'm coming off an acer aspire one AOD250, soooo yeahhh haha

I use JD.com for such things, they're pretty great.

And Windows 8 has pretty great backward comparability, unless you are aware of a specific program that you need and has to run on a 32bit OS, you'll want 64 bit version.

Holy shit! Finally!
I hope none of you remember me saying I would make one of these threads.

Hangzhou-GAF right here. Probably the only one, sadly.

Don't know if this is the place to ask, but I'm wondering if anyone could help me with buying rice in the US. Have someone who is a bit homesick and is craving the rice back home. The term the person used is yuande which I believe means round. The person is from Qingdao if that would help. There are a lot of Asian market around here, but we can't find the particular grain the person is craving. Wondering if anyone can help with search term, brand, or even online marketplace where I could order some.

Most Chinese prefer short grain rice (just plain white rice, not sticky, sweet or brown rice). You should have no problem finding them in supermarket or online. I tried this before, it's pretty good. Kokuho Rose Rice (Kokuho Rose is the brand, it's still white rice)

Suning, Yihaodian, JD, amazon or Taobao are all fine, though amazon would probably be easiest if you don't have an alipay account or someone to order it for you.

Since you're in china, don't bother going with some rip off brand like HP; get one of the Chinese brands which generally are far more cost effective.

I've had a Hasee for a couple of months now and it's of better quality than my old HP and far better value for the specs than anything else

Yeah all the porn gifs was turning the wechat group to shit (thanks hamz!), and I was using it on my GF's phone she was like, "so this is what foreigners do, just talk about sexing up teenage Chinese girls and look at exploding dicks all day?"

About the computer stuff, I have had great luck ordering ASUS brands off of taobao. They all come with warranties , but even then I have taken them to the local branch here and they fix them for free without even looking/asking for anything.

His clinic has a Chinese name, right? say it's 大安牙医, so something simple like this may just work

大安牙医,照顾全家

And probably no pinyin, no one reads that anyway. English or Chinese.
