I dunno. Most bannings I've seen are generally people who are stirring up shit as opposed to trying to genuinely argue a controversial opinion. then again I don't go looking for bannings

If you're genuinely interested or curious then google for examples of what you get banned for on neogaf.

Anyhow, as for OP - if you want to primarily hear from people that share your preferences then obviously don't bring up something like guns on a forum not specifically meant for it, especially on one with international posters. You're not going to find much support. On the other hand you'd find plenty of similar minded people in /r/guns.

RSS is dead, otherwise I would say just build your own RSS feed (you can still use it for smaller blogs but not up-to-the-second news). There's probably alternatives, like maybe tweaking your Twitter feed very carefully.

"Comments" sections on websites rarely provide a lot of insight anymore, which is why it is better to stick to forums. GAF certainly isn't perfect but it's better than 4chan-Lite.

Their former CEO thinks he's the leader of a new government and has outright said they'll turn a blind eye to hate group subreddits as long as they keep 'gilding' comments (paying money to mark a comment as important).

He also pulled some shady shit to disguise laying off employees as a 'relocation'. The CEO has now resigned.

It's run by a bunch of starry-eyed dorks that go on about how they'll never step in to block any speech, but always step in and obliterates a subreddit once it gets media attention at how disgusting a subreddit is. They'll ignore DMCA requests from small creators but immediate acknowledge them from big corporations. Basically, if you have lots of money or are feeding them money, they love you. If you don't, you ain't shit.

This is a site that let a child porn subreddit stay up until the media turned up the heat on them and they couldn't ignore it anymore.

They let hate groups recruit and have a home on their site, letting them build and fester and have more reach than if they had to host their own site. Actual people linked to hate crimes and murders.

And then people will tell you it's fine because it's just a subreddit. Which is like saying this neighborhood is okay, just ignore the apartment building down the block that's constantly on fire and has a guy outside of it that wants to stab you each time you walk to the store.

The difference on gaf is that you get banned instead of down voted for having a minority opinion. It's why I try to avoid controversial opinions here. At least I can continually make a case on Reddit.

I think it's more of how you defend your opinion. I've seen a guy defend ISIS on here without getting banned -- but the mods are definitely quick to ban people with unpopular opinions.

Agreed, I had a discussion about piracy here and didn't get banned for it. I thought I would because it's kind of not allowed on here but in the end I wasn't banned or anything.

I use reddit to find deals, make gift card exchanges, swap pokemon, look up information on random tech stuff, and waste time looking at cute animal pictures. If you don't treat reddit as a substitute for gaf, then you'll be perfectly happy with it.

For news, I guess the trendy thing right now is twitter.

The Islamophobia on Reddit is the worst. A religion that is spread across 50 different countries and 50+ different ethnic groups, a quarter of the world's population, is shoehorned into one big evil group out to cause harm to every non-Muslim. According to the consensus on Reddit the majority of Muslims are super religious and live every aspect of their life according to exact Islamic doctrine. No you fucking retards, the world is so much more complicated than that.

It makes the world look like a Saturday morning cartoon.

It's so hypocritical from the website in general which is liberal and intelligent generally. But when it comes to Muslims oh boy. Suddenly everyone is an expert.

The only direct alternative would be 8chan which uses reddit's system of users being able to make their own boards but uses an imageboard system instead of reddits weird comment based up/downvote thing. However it's even worse than reddit in how easy it is for people to control opinions by continually passing around certain images and how you'll get shit on hard for going against that opinion.

Also people post child porn there.

Probably a deal breaker for most...

I go to mostly niche subs on reddit. IDK but the bigger reddit subs have gotten really racist and sexist these past few years. I had to unsub from /r/videos recently because that stupid police chief video was on my front page and you know exactly why the reddit hivemind would upvote a video of a police chief deflect the conversation of police brutality to talk about black on black crime. Last week a Christina Hoff Summers video was on the front page. Fucking ridiculous.

I even go going to my favourite sub, /r/SubredditDrama, less often because for the most part the only thing that is dramaworthy these days is someone being racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or whatever. It's just so tiring.

Really, neogaf is the only community I know that doesn't allow this crap.

Reddit has anything and everything I desire, where else can I get gaming news, buttholes, funny GIFs and cute kittens? I mostly browse it in bed on my tablet.

The only default sub I'm still subscribed to is /r/aww, because it does exactly what I want it to and I never read the comments. Other than that I subscribe to subs as they interest me. There are quite a few, and most of them are pretty good. Reddit can be great but you need to make it your own.

What are these "controversial opinions"

Because if it's just dumbass racism, sexism, or other assorted ignorance then no one gives a fuck

You didn't go far enough. Ask him if he supports genocide and tipping, just to really hammer the ridiculousness home.

As for the topic, I sub to subreddits for things I like, so when I get sick of the samey opinions, I flip over to my account and see some new stuff. Reddit has too much useful information and breaking news to really ever leave. It does have its moments of dumbassery though.

Serious post here:

Have you ever checked out SomethingAwful forums? I consider myself a gaffer before I would consider myself a goon, but I have been amazed at that communities ability to create mega threads that last years and can remain on topic an interesting.

I mostly go there for the cooking threads, but they have some amazing threads on WWII history which I enjoy as well.

Just don't read the comments and subscribe to the news subreddits you want. Like youtube.

Pretty much this. Take the things that are useful and interesting to you, and ignore the other junk. I view these kind of sites (including gaf) as more of a tool to get the information I want. Got to learn to filter out the noise.

Reddit really is a shithole, and it has been for years. I too wish that there was a decent alternative out there with a smaller userbase and a decent moderation policy.

These days I really only go to the meta subs and the silly ones like r/thatHappened. All the racism, sexism, brogressive politics, conspiracy theories, bullying, etc. has finally convinced me to mostly give up on it. I like the idea of the site but the userbase has pushed me away.

/r/askhistorians is one of the best things in the Internet. You just need to filter.

Came her to say this. It's a great subreddit, with great mods. I am getting tired of all the "I'm an x in year y, what does my day look like?" posts people keep submitting though.

Stick to a few smaller or extremely controlled subreddits and maybe you won't have such a bad time. Reddit is full of white supremacists, trolls, children, "red pillers", conspiracy theorists and so on. There are constant gender wars and circle jerking going on.

The upvote/downvote system seems horrible, every time I look at a big discussion it seems like a snark competition to get the most upvotes sometimes.

Cool Facts: Game of War has been a hit since July 2013
I've found that there are very few subreddits that are free of hivemind mentality for long. For the past year I have visited r/smashbros a lot, but recently they've started complaining about trivial things that could easily get fixed in an upcoming patch. Yesterday, there were literally people saying that they weren't buying the Wii U version of Smash because the C-stick was configured differently then it has been in previous games.

4chan is actually a decent alternative if you want a diverse discussion. Contrary to popular belief, it isn't a child porn website filled with hackers on steroids. Decent discussions can be found on most boards, though some have more than others. Just stay away from /b/ (random) and the weird interest boards.

Most boards get news related to their topic posted pretty quickly. Not fully sure what your interests are, but here are some alright boards:

/Sci/ - Science and Math
/g/ - Technology
/vr/ - Retro Gaming
/vg/ - Videogame General (the equivalent of gaf OT threads are found here)
/co/ - Comics and Cartoons
/mu/ - Music (prepare to discover obscure bands)
/lit/ - Literature

/pol/ - Politically Incorrect is basically the current events board, but it is filled with racists and homophobes. If you can wade through the garbage you can sometimes find a good philosophical debate.

/tv/ - Television and Film is alright, but it's currently going through a (hilarious) shitposting renaissance.

The trick to reddit is to curate your experience by unsubbing from the defaults and carefully choosing which smaller subs to go to.

I love /r/conspiracy. It can sometimes be a misnomer. Either I'm crazy or 80% of the things posted there are actually verifiable facts.

/pol/ Is not for the faint of heart.

Edit: Really I would never recommend 4chan to anyone. It is truly awful.

Lol /tv/ is full of paedophiles and racists.

Agreed. There are good communities, but most of the defaults and larger ones are geared toward recycling the same jokes for karma points.

Ehhhhh /tv/ is a weird beast, that's why I didn't include it in the "main" list. Mostly use it to discuss current TV show episodes and laugh at stupid shit. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's filled with pedophiles and racists (not pedophiles at least), but stuff pops up every once in a while. The thing with 4chan is that if you read something that's really offensive or dumb you need to be able to just ignore it or hide the post in question. An unfiltered discussion board is a bit of a double edged sword, and it's certainly not for everyone, but I personally think it ads something that can't be found on other communities.

Reddit is open source. You can actually make your own reddit server and I know this because I've tried it before.

reddit is okay.. I have the front page tweaked to my liking and usually only look at a few subreddits. I don't really partake in up/down-voting anything but there's a lot of great content to be found on there. Unfortunately, the very system that is supposed to discourage people from posting stupid shit in the comments section is what makes horrible comments thrive and "karma trains" and such. I tend to avoid them.

Who cares if you get downvoted for anything? I guess if you get downvoted people don't see your posts so maybe that's why it annoys you. I didn't start spending much time there until some of you guys put me onto the cringe sub, And I love it there. I see so many crossposts from /r/askreddit as threads here on Neogaf. There's a ton of good stuff on there. I read much more than I post.

I mean, some communities are fucked on Reddit, but other are still amazing.

Nowhere will I find more helpful people than on r/dnd and r/dndnext.

I used to feel the same way until I really started diving into the subreddits. The less popular ones are a treasure trove of interesting discussion.

Isn't /r/cringe pretty much a bullying sub nowadays?

/r/askreddit is pretty terrible. You get a good thread every now and then, imho usually something about creepy stuff happening to people where you can spend some time reading. But the amount of inane threads.... often times just list threads where people come and list something and never look back, like "what's a good song for showering" and similar.

If you get an alternative how will you know what gafOT is going to be like tomorrow?

I find that reddit works well for me if I add subs that I am interested in and don't just go to the all or front page as it is setup when you start.
