Most seem to like it. Wall Street Journal was down on it. Camera seems like a decent improvementcool. Though I didnt see any mentions of the new 4K 24fps mode.Reviews are out
WSJ had a scathing review. Came up on my news app on my iphone and apple watch. Ironic.Reviews are out
I might be a bit weird here but one of the things im excited about is how clean the new iPhones are on the back. Just an apple logo and the word iPhone. It looks really sharp.
As someone going from a 6 to an 8+ I'm content with what I'm reading.
Confident in a big upgrade in two years without any teething issues.
Thats gonna be a fantastic upgrade. The 8 isnt exciting but if youre upgrading from anything besides a 7 I think youll find it a worthwhile investment, ESPECIALLY if youre coming from a 6.
TechCrunch review does a nice job covering the camera:

Sounds great to me, but I am still not hot on portrait lighting. Those sample pics dont do a good job justifying the writers enthusiasm.
Hardware NR looks like it does a great job, and the slow sync flash makes flash actually worth using. Its really a nice update all things considered.
I give you six months ; )I guess I'll keep my 6s+. At this point the only thing that will get me to buy a new phone is when Apple gimps my phone with a iOS update.
Portrait mode is a fantastic practical solution to a ubiquitous mobile problem. Portrait lighting is a solution in search of a problem.Portrait mode is a joke. Slow sync flash can be useful. I wish he posted some examples of the NR.

I said it before but I think the 6s is effectively the new baseline spec with decent cpu and 2GB ram. It'll be a fine phone (along with SE) for several years

Portrait lighting looks pretty bad in most of the shots Ive seen. I would much prefer a way to adjust the bokeh effect by f stop, set a manual focus plane, or simulate depth of field in video. Even an improvement to the bokeh shape would be great. Maybe that will be added in the future. Portrait lighting is so underwhelming, it almost feels like an insult.
9to5 mac review was the first I heard of zero shutter lag and haptic feedback on the shutter button. Thats cool.
Is this the first time iPhones have had slow sync flash?
After thinking about it a litle more/reading some of those reviews I decided to just get a 7+ over the 8+, will be more then enough for my needs through 2019. $130 cheaper and a huge upgrade over my $50 budget android phone. Arrives Thursday so I'm quite excited ^_^ Are cases/screen protectors a must? I'd like to think I'm quite careful with my electronics but with this being my priciest phone ever by over 13 times I'd hate to ruin is since I'm not sure how fragile/durable iphones are.
I havent heard about that, but it sounds promising. Seems like a no brainer for Apple to include something like that. I hope youre right, and outside developers will fill the gap.I'm sure we'll see third parties filling that gap. Wasn't there one developer showing a sneak peek at a cinema bokeh app? The depth API could be really cool and definitely makes me want a dual camera this time around
I hate cases but for the plus it's almost a requirement. The 7's aluminum is slippery and the phone is so big that there's a good chance of dropping it.

Ok then. How was the WSJ review scathing?
It's basically what any reviewer not up Apples ass should be writing. iPhone 8 is not a big improvement over the last two years. The design besides the glass hasn't changed for four years.
It deserves the negative press. iPhone x is really the product you should be wanting if you bought any of the last two iPhones released.

Why is design the most important improvement?

Yeah.[apple makes a new phone design that's thinner and lighter]
lol apple always puts form over function, give me the same design but with more power and battery life
[apple iterates on a design and makes it thicker and more powerful]
apple's design has lost its way, look at these giant bezels, jobs is rolling in his grave

You are crazy if you think the iPhone 8 looks like the 6, if they offered me an iPhone with the same internals/specs of the 8 but that looked like the 6 for 400 less i would always pick the full priced, better designed 8 all the days of my life.
The 6 was a punch in the eye, the 7 fixed everything and the 8 uses completely different look and feel materials.
The change of materials alone puts the 8 in a totally different spectrum of design compared to its immediate predecessors.
That being said these reviews dissipated all my doubts and i've decided on the white/silver color, so pure and stylish.

Portrait mode even in beta could produce some excellent photos. I have done portrait photography in the past, and of course realize a high end dedicated camera remains preferable to a smartphone, but I still came away impressed more often than not when using portrait mode. They are both software solutions to hardware problems. Looks like ass to me. Will stick to real camera for portraits.
Except for those of us upgrading from a 6 who dont want to spend 1k on a phone. But your point is valid if you have a 6+ or 7 imho as you said.

Totally agree, design is as important as every thing else. 6 was ugly and slippery, 7 looked better but still slippery and not that attractive. The 8 looks beautiful and the glass back will give it a bit of stickiness, reminds me of a modern iPhone 4. I think the 7 is a better value, but design matters and the 8 finally does it right.
4 tries and they got it right.
I'm not crazy. Go read the WSJ or verge reviews and they are repeating what I am saying.
Complete different spectrum? What are you going on about? One is using glass and the others are using Alumunium. Hardly complete different spectrum. Complete different spectrum is when you talking about the X. You also need to learn the difference between design and material. I was talking about the design being the same for the last four years.
It's a minimal upgrade over the last two phones which were the 6s and 7. I'm not surprised about the negative reviews. Apparently that's trolling now.

As if WSJ and Verge were these bastion of knowledge of design.
And if you think that the material used doesn't change and influence the design of an object i really don't know what to tell you.
And besides, aside the different materials the 8 has a different design than the 7 anyway, just look at the antenna band and the camera protrusion.
I personally think the 7 has a better and cleaner design than the 8 but the 8 is still good and gets bonus points for being vaguely reminiscent of the GOAT 4.
Someone on another forum contacted Apple support about HDR - the rep told them that if a movie is Dolby Vision, it will not fall back to HDR10 if the TV does not support Dolby Vision.
That's really disappointing if true. I feel like there has to be way more HDR10 only sets out in people's homes than DV at the moment.
It also seems oddly specific for a customer rep to know that on a product that's not even released yet.
Oh well, we'll know more by Friday. Still holding out hope.
