I'm disappointed that the path-routing doesn't actually work like in the video, though.

Tower Hall at SJSU!
Nothing for Stanford or Berkeley ;P
Might also be a clue about some of the persons responsible, maybe?
Could've been SE that did it, they share the copyright and may've helped put it together.Do you think they just send an email out to every Google office around the world asking if anyone wants to create an 8-bit landmark? Versus one team (or person) doing it as a side project all year?
Perhaps. Here's MIT, showing the main campus building. Here's Harvard, showing... nothing.

you're talking about the fake copyright on the AFD joke?
Love the blow into the cartridge bug fix
The site itself says Map Data (c)2012 Google, SQUARE ENIX in the lower right corner. It's hard to imagine Google being allowed to do this without asking for Squenix's permission first, since it uses copyrighted material. Squenix is almost certainly in on the joke, which makes it that much more awesome.
Yeah I saw this in the lower right corner.
It's really awesome, and nevertheless I find the idea of an online game on a cartridge-based system with an onboard modem pure genius, but it would be really expensive
EDIT : I don't think there are any religious buildings, as Notre Dame de Paris/Reims/Amiens and Hassan II Mosque don't appear (but the Louvre's Pyramid appear, awesome !)

you really think square spent time to make everything in there? i doubt it. they would have had to be paid by google. they're not going to do it for fun.
google probably just licensed their sprites.

Apparently it's a commercially viable practice! (Well, maybe?)

Haha, this is too great. Even the streetview of my house is converted.
Yeah, still cool though. Didn't really expect streetview to be in it at all. It's just a filter they are overlaying on the regular Street View image.
Can this be done on mobile devices?
Google Lat Long Blog said:As the first NES cartridge to be released in nearly 18 years, were working hard to make Google Maps 8-bit for NES available in the Google Store as soon as possible. A mobile version for Game Boy is also under development.

I wish you could control the Dragon Warrior guy with the arrow keys. =(I'm disappointed that the path-routing doesn't actually work like in the video, though.
