Arcade Fire announce new album Everything Now, out July 28, titular single out now

That's how bad they stick out

Holy shit, that's a great lineup! Kinda strange that The National was opening for another band at that point in their career though.

Yep, there's no way they would open for AF at this point. Even after High Violet it seemed weird. Maybe they were technically co-headlining? Idk.

I think this is the first time I've ever hearing of people really not liking The Suburbs. That winning the Grammy for best album is what introduced me to the band in the first place, and then Funeral blew me away.

1. Funeral
2. The Suburbs
3. Neon Bible
4. Reflektor

I like them all so far, with Reflektor being the weakest. I've yet to listen to the new one yet. The reviews are making me nervous.

This does remind me of U2's POP both thematicallly and in its half-baked...ness. Except POP sounded like "we didn't finish" and Everything Now sounds like "this is all we got". Just a very slight album.

After a couple listens, Put Your Money On Me, Electric Blue, We Don't Deserve Love, Creature Comfort, and Good God Damn are my favorites.

Just finished listening to it and it isnt very good but I don't think it is that much worse than Reflektor which was also a bit of a dud. They have slowly disappeared up their own butt imo, each successive album has had more terrible, pretentious lyrics and more and more flab which needed to be cut. This album isn't super long but half of the album is just .. not good.

i don't know wtf Chemistry is, but boy was I not expecting that. It's like a New Kids on the Block song but with brass reggae? Can't fault them for not trying different things.

EDIT: man I can't stop listening to this song it's so weird

probably co-headlining.

I saw Arcade Fire open for The Unicorns and there were more people on the stage than in the audience as they played through Funeral (okay not quite... but close!). It was pretty clear they were going to be huge seeing that show. Within a year they were selling out mid size venues.

Ps- the Unicorns were awesome live too... but not AF funeral era incredible :p

This would've made a great EP, but the two wraparound Everything Now intro/outtro tracks are trash. The mid-section is b-side material. In particular I'm not a fan of Chemistry or Good God Damn.

This is their worst album. Some strong singles that have been overplayed already.

Funeral - 10
Neon Bible - 8
The Suburbs: Extended - 9
Reflektor - 7
Everything Now - 5

I was pretty meh on Reflektor, but this is an actively disappointing album. Kind of a shame, the Funeral/Neon/Suburbs trilogy felt like they could do no wrong.

Yeah, it's fair to say they're past their prime. Funeral is a 10, but each subsequent album has been worst than the last. Neon Bible and The Suburbs are about an 8, though I'd give the edge to NB. Reflektor is a bit bloated and inconsistent, but has some brilliant tracks. This new album is just kind of a bland alternative dance album. The title track is great, but everything else is either average or awful. Still, love em and going to see them in concert in September.

I like it. Well, I liked the singles we've heard already. Among the new stuff, I like Peter Pan, Put Your Money on Me and We Don't Deserve Love.
Good God Damn is decent.
Chemistry is an instant skip though.
Good God Damn is this album's Porno and Chemistry is Flashbulb Eyes...

I don't consider Infinite Content to be a real song. It's an obvious gimmick. As is "you've already paid for this album so here's a stupid filler to make it longer" (infinite content, get it? har har har). I could have done without and some people will take it seriously. The beat in the first part is pretty good so it's a shame they didn't do a real song with it.

So I'd say it's a 7.5/10. I'm fairly easy to please. I don't really consider music to be serious business.

AF are one of the biggest bands around I'd say. They won a Grammy for Best Album. The National aren't really known outside of people who like indie rock. I don't think it's weird at all that the National would be opening for AF.

I guess this was a little before they won the Grammy, but still...

also...

I'm listening to a few tracks out of order from "Everything Now" and I think this album is better than the reviews and impressions I've been reading...

I don't think this is a fan vs non fan thing. I made an OT for Reflektor and I'll stand by the second disc of that as some of their best
work. Certainly just a strong as Suburbs and Neon Bible.
It isn't just that it's not that good for them, it's just not very good

I'm really liking it too. People just want to hate things, looks cooler.

Tired of people trying to dismiss legitimate complaints as “people want to hate things to seem cool”.

It’s not the strongest material from their entire catalog. The middle section of the album is downright mediocre. It’s a shame because their first 3 albums are really excellent. I think trying to make this a concept album didn’t help but hurt the overall song writing.

I’m seeing them in less than two weeks at Lolla and I’m excited, but I can live without stuff like Infinite Content being played live.

I once saw The National and Modest Mouse open for R.E.M. That's probably the best lineup I've ever seen.

I feel like the sheer idea of a modern band trying to speak to our need for digital content is an almost impossible task, especially since Arcade Fire have a history of massive digital promotions leading up to their releases. It all just reads so contrived to me.

I also feel like the discussion of how distracted society is in the digital age is just about the most boring, over analyzed topic there is right now. There's just nothing new to say on it, or if there is, it wasn't said here.

ha, my girlfriend actually went to that show too... and tuned out once R.E.M. took the stage -_-

Personally, unless they're giving away their shit for free, I think rock bands should just stop signing about consumerism full stop.

It's... really good tbh?

I mean, Infinite Content, which by itself is nothing, must be amazingly fun in a life show.

They haven't actually played much of the new stuff yet, just the singles + Chemistry so far. I hope they were just waiting until the album was out before playing more, because I'll be disappointed if I don't get to hear Put Your Money On Me and We Don't Deserve Love live.

I really hope this turns out decent, waiting for my free copy I get with my tickets to their tour to hear it.

Kinda think they bit off more they can chew with their venue choices for this tour. I don't think they are big enough to be playing the same arenas as rappers like Kanye or Kendrick are right now.

I'm suprised they once again went with big venues because if I remember correctly, they has trouble filling them during the Reflekor tour. And their popularity has probably gone down since then.

They played arenas on their last tour too.

Really weird to see what was my favorite band for years make a track as garbage as Chemistry. It's a fucking terrible song. I'm just as tired of this detached Win Butler as he seems to be. Looking back, I connected with a lot of songs on Reflektor. There was a lot of heart on that album that I just don't hear with this, even if that might be intentional. Favorite song is definitely Electric Blue on this, and it's fitting that it's the one without Win.

Edit: We Don't Deserve Love makes me sad that they can still wrote something that good but choose not to for the rest of the album.

man this thread blew up overnight.

So a lot of things --- anyone who says Rococo or Windowsill is there worst song over FLASHBULB EYES is crazy.

Ok that settled.

Funeral and the Suburbs are Masterpieces. Neon Bible is great, though a little heavy handed (and I say that as someone who likes AF's heavy-handed ness), and Reflektor is a great album with some bloat.

I love this band for trying different stuff each time out. And this feels like they took some big chances.

I definitely concur with people saying the more detached / cynical Win is not the best Win. The band is at its best when it's full of heart. It's also best when you get the whole band...

So that brings us to Everything Now --- it's impossible to really judge something this big / complex in a few listens, but after last night and this AM, I think it's like Reflektor, but with lower lows.

Sonically the album is terrific though, this is some of Tim's best bass work on any album. It sounds incredible. I do feel like the band isn't as readily apparent here, maybe because it doesn't have those moments where everyone is joining in singing. Maybe it's because it's not as big and bombastic in places. Hard to say.

There's some incredible tracks on this album worthy of everything else they've done, Everything Now, Creature Comfort, Electric Blue, Put Your Money on Me and We Don't Deserve Love are all songs that I cannot wait to hear live and will keep listening to.

Put Your Money on Me / Electric Blue probably deserve HOF status.

I think that middle weird lull (Peter Pan, Infinite Content) may keep this from being an album you want to listen all the way through though, which is kind of a shame.

I need more time to let the whole thing sink in and kind of unfold itself.

I do think the reviews (*cough Pitchfork cough*) are just delighting in tearing down a band they built up.

All in all, I think it's probably going to rank 5th on their list of albums, but I'm glad they are taking big risks still and trying new stuff. If we get 5 new killer tracks that join the live set, it's worth it in the end.

I hate hate hate hate hate this sentiment. I can't speak for review outlets, but I like music. I like arcade fire. I take no joy in saying "man, this album's a stinker". Get outta here with that shit.

Probably coupled with a general trajectory of diminishing returns.

But this also seems like an exaggeration. Funeral, Neon Bible and Suburbs are all brilliant albums. Each one of them was a top album in the year it came out.

I suppose Reflektor was a step down but it was still great.

But I dunno, some people here are acting like Neon Bible and Suburbs weren't very good either so I'm in crazy land.

They played arenas on their last tour too.
That's true, I guess it's just weird since the last time I saw them for the Suburbs tour here they picked a place that didn't end up sold out and it was a large amphitheater that holds a little more than half of what they are playing on this tour.

I guess I'm just thinking that if they aren't big enough to fill a place like that on a good day, if this album ends up as a misstep the problem maybe even worse.

Even though there are about three songs on it that should've been cut (City With No Children and the two Half Lights), The Suburbs is the best album of the decade.

Yeah, agreed. It's not like they gave it a 2. On an album where only half the songs are decent, and even the decent ones don't stack up to their all-timers, a 5.6 seems more than fair TBH. People are free to have a different opinion, but the score isn't completely unjustified.
