man this thread blew up overnight.
So a lot of things --- anyone who says Rococo or Windowsill is there worst song over FLASHBULB EYES is crazy.
Ok that settled.
Funeral and the Suburbs are Masterpieces. Neon Bible is great, though a little heavy handed (and I say that as someone who likes AF's heavy-handed ness), and Reflektor is a great album with some bloat.
I love this band for trying different stuff each time out. And this feels like they took some big chances.
I definitely concur with people saying the more detached / cynical Win is not the best Win. The band is at its best when it's full of heart. It's also best when you get the whole band...
So that brings us to Everything Now --- it's impossible to really judge something this big / complex in a few listens, but after last night and this AM, I think it's like Reflektor, but with lower lows.
Sonically the album is terrific though, this is some of Tim's best bass work on any album. It sounds incredible. I do feel like the band isn't as readily apparent here, maybe because it doesn't have those moments where everyone is joining in singing. Maybe it's because it's not as big and bombastic in places. Hard to say.
There's some incredible tracks on this album worthy of everything else they've done, Everything Now, Creature Comfort, Electric Blue, Put Your Money on Me and We Don't Deserve Love are all songs that I cannot wait to hear live and will keep listening to.
Put Your Money on Me / Electric Blue probably deserve HOF status.
I think that middle weird lull (Peter Pan, Infinite Content) may keep this from being an album you want to listen all the way through though, which is kind of a shame.
I need more time to let the whole thing sink in and kind of unfold itself.
I do think the reviews (*cough Pitchfork cough*) are just delighting in tearing down a band they built up.
All in all, I think it's probably going to rank 5th on their list of albums, but I'm glad they are taking big risks still and trying new stuff. If we get 5 new killer tracks that join the live set, it's worth it in the end.
