Q: Where does this rank in terms of simulation?
A: Above GT and Forza and the track-based Codemaster games. It is up there somewhere with the other big sim racing names like iRacing and rFactor 2 or at least very close. Kunos also make a "Assetto Corsa Pro"-version that is used by manufacturers like Ferrari und Porsche for simulations.

Q: How does it play with a gamepad? Do I need a steering wheel?
A: Most people say it plays well with a pad (definitely more than pCARS at least), but it feels amazing with a FFB wheel.

Q: How approachable is this? Is this just for the hardest of the hardcore?
A: Some of the challenges are very hard, but there are enough difficulty settings (slider from 70-100) for everyone to be competetive against the AI.

Q: Is there a dynamic racing/ideal line, like in Forza?
A: Yes there is, it is more on the safe/slow side though.

Q: How is the AI?
A: It has gotten significantly better in 2016 and is really good if the AI is infront or next to you. It's still too peaceful with overtakes and double so if it is the player who is to be overtaken.

Q: Are there weather and time of day options?
A: Different degrees of cloud cover can be chosen from. Starting time options go from 8am to 6pm (no night time).

Q: Are rain and wet track conditions simulated?
A: No.

Q: Is track marbeling and a dynamic grip "race-lin" simulated?
A: No, but you can choose from different "track grip improves during the race"-options.

Q: I hear a lot about terrible screen tearing, what is up with that?
A: ----

TIPS

Tuning guide:
http://m.imgur.com/YXmCK56?r

Use a calcualtor online to set your FOV to the 'correct' value and then increase it slowly until you get the required sense of speed back without compromising the view too much.
FOV Calculator :
http://www.projectimmersion.com/fov/index.php

you can set the time the tire squeal sets in. The default is too early in my opinion and gives you the impression of tire lock when they are still rolling.

Playstation Lifestyle 5/10

Assetto Corsa may succeed as a simulation, but it fails as a game. Clearly a ton of work has gone into making sure the cars handle correctly and that the tracks are as realistic as possible, which just makes the end result even more heartrending. It has a terrible user interface, isn’t fun to play and doesn’t feature any of the helpful tools that make Forza such an appealing game.

USGamer 4.5/5

Assetto Corsa is a great-looking, excellent-sounding, meticulously crafted simulation that offers a very realistic racing experience. Its authenticity does come at a cost, however - it's very difficult to drive well, and requires a considerable investment of your time to get the most out of it. However, if you're a hardcore racing enthusiast who loves a challenge, Assetto Corsa is one of the best driving sims available.

ACG Video review - Deep deep sale

Eurogamer Italia - 8/10

n the area of console, various Forza and GT remain unreachable for methods and content, especially the slopes and also Project Cars confirms aesthetically more finished although not as stable as in frame rate. But if the house you have a next-generation console and a force feedback steering wheel worthy of the name, there is no doubt. The simulative depth of Assetto Corsa is unrivaled car park and is still the ideal choice for riders who want to discover the living room from a virtual drive and are ready to invest some of their time to get over an initial period of apprenticeship that reward you with great satisfaction in the medium and long term.

Digitalspy - 3.5/5

Try not to be put off by the horrendously challenging career mode. While Assetto Corsa's unforgiving hardcore style won't be for everyone, the actual driving is absolutely brilliant.

Turn the driving aids down or shift to Factory settings and you'll find a simulation of weight, grip and momentum to equal – if not surpass – Forza, Gran Turismo and Project Cars, and while you won't find the extensive track or vehicle lists you'll find in the bigger games, there's no disputing the quality of the selection.

This isn't a casual gamer's sim-style racer, but if you're looking for a more authentic driving sim Assetto Corsa might just win your heart.

Trusted Reviews - 3.5/5

Assetto Corsa has its share of problems. It can’t compete with Forza, Gran Turismo or Project Cars when it comes to looks, cars or tracks. The career mode is tedious and often frustrating, and the presentation makes it feel even nerdier and less accessible than it is. Yet the core driving experience remains magnificent, with some of the best handling and most immersive racing around. This isn’t a racer for everyone – it’s tough, demanding and a bit too hardcore – but if you want a sim with thrills and authenticity, it’s well worth taking for a spin.

Pushsquare - 5/10

Assetto Corsa is a frustrating drive with a punishing learning curve that never truly pays you back for your time investment. It fails to provide an effective way to learn its complicated intricacies and lacks features that a game of its ilk requires. It's also simultaneously the best and worst presented racing game of the past few years, with superbly detailed cars and tracks hampered by awful long-distance scenery and ugly roadside textures. Ultimately, this is a disappointment that lacks the heart required to truly celebrate the cars it has so lovingly recreated.

Digitally Downloaded - 4.5/5

Really the appeal of Assetto Corsa is in taking control of Lamborghinis and Ferraris and racing around tracks that are really beautiful for high precision cars that have good acceleration built into them. It’s far more focused on what it does well than many other racing games, and unfortunately the overall package suffers a little as a consequence, but I just can’t get over how much I accelerating out of corners in this one.

God is ageek - 5/10

POSITIVES
Excellent physics system

NEGATIVES
Almost everything else

We got this covered - 3.5/5

GOOD
Gritty and realistic, Assetto Corsa is for serious racing fans. It lacks finesse, but it's one of the best racers on the market.

Metacritic scores:
PS4 - 80
XB1 - Awaiting 4 review scores
Opencritic scores: All platforms - 71

from the previous thread...

am I going crazy or are those cars with that icon...microtransactions stuck right there in the main fucking car choices?
Because its sending me to the store...

Forza games have been doing that for years. What's not nice (putting it mildly ;)) is that:
a) it looks like they didn't include any of the DLC packs released on PC before the premiere of the console versions
b) Gamestop pre-order gives you 9 unique cars, not just some new liveries to put on the existing cars

Edit: No rain and no night time? Well, another reason not to buy it for a long time. :/

Great OT!

I went from pre-order to...cancel pre-order and wait & see because of the framerate/tearing.
Such a pity.

Forza also has a shitton more cars. At some point...man you have to draw a line in my book.
Also Forza's way of handling it is a bit cleaner than this. This is just in a grid with those right in the middle and shit. Sounds like a small issue but you notice it.

I don't think it's going to review very well, especially from non-race sim people, but I am going to hold judgement till I play it, although some of the performance issues do look worrying.

As for the DLC business, like I said in a previous thread, I am not in anyway condoning content gouging, but this isn't a full price release.

Just because they took a few dollars off doesn't make it budget. It's almost full price as it is, throw in the season pass which still doesn't take the content count to what would be considered normal for a console sim and it becomes premiumly priced.

I haven't noticed that it's not full price. I wonder if it will equal to one if you sum up the price of the game and all of the day1 dlc's. ;)

I get that, I was just highlighting it's not a $60 product.

When do reviews start dropping?

Embargo is today, but I don't know the time, maybe this afternoon?

I'd say it might be an idea to temper expectations, it could get ugly :-/

Do we know for sure that Fanatec isn't supported? There was that one video, but nothing official AFAIK.

Make of it what you will.

505 Games and Kunos Simulazioni can confirm that Assetto Corsa currently supports all officially licensed peripherals for PlayStation 4. We are constantly striving to deliver our community the best driving sim experience and whilst we understand that this may not match expectations, we will of course do all we can to support our players. Right now, this matter is beyond our control but we hope to add support for more wheels in the future by working closely with both Sony and Fanatec.

Nice OT Dan, but you forgot "Tears more often than Geoff Capes in a phone book factory" under Key Features.

I'd start lowering them if I was you.

I've just read the italian eurogamer AC review, as for the ps4 version they say that the framerate is gets an hit on standing starts in some specific tracks and that regularly overs between 55 and 60.

The simulation aspect is the same quality of the pc version, the graphic has lower illumination quality in the ps4, the FB has less setting options.

Overall is the best Sim available on ps4.

Looking back at the state Pcars released on ps4, this is gold.

Great OT.

Had hoped my copy would arrive early but alas only just dispatched. Still, can't complain, £30 from amazon isn't bad at all.

Already passed, a group of us already put up reviews.

For me its a wait for a Deep Deep Sale.
It's got too many technical issues that truly impacted the game-play for me. Especially since I am familiar with the PC version.

Both versions fluctuate in both fps and frametime a great deal, both have issues with that impacting the game play itself of course as this is a pretty technical racing game.
Tearing is insane. I mean horrid to the point of being a bit uncomfortable to watch over long periods of time. I can't easily recall a game with tearing this bad.
Control when not being impacted by the technical issues is great and its playable with the control if your inside the cars. Outside...it can get a bit hairy though especially if the FPS drops.

Sound of course is amazing

Interesting that someone else mentioned that f*cking UI. Christ lol. First game I have just up and turned it all off.

Really sucks that it isn't better. I was absolutely hoping for that hard core sim.

Nice Ot. I probably would have jumped at £30 from Amazon but the tearing would drive me absolutely crazy. Oh and I got f1 this morning.

Say what you will about PCars, but AC will have the same perceived problems it had. The core fundamentals of the game is baked into the driving, if you need distractions from that, there are more than enough games to appease you

If you really like to race (against humans), tuning cars, improving on Lap times... You'll love it.

If you like the feeling of owning a full garage, upgrading your vehicles, abusing AI, and having a sense of progression to your career..you won't like it as much.

Despite the flaws in PCars (and there are lots), I love it, I have over 300hrs on it on the PS4.

As long as I can hotlap with a decent physics model on Assetto Corsa on the PS4, I'll be happy.

Christ alive, I just noticed that the AI brake lights strobe like a 1970s disco. Sigh. That is some Forza 4 shit right there. OK, the AI doesn't brake progressively, it brakes by quickly tapping the brakes full on or leaving them full off. But for fuck's sake HIDE the fact with a visual filtering system so it doesn't look like the driver has restless leg syndrome. How fucking hard can it be? Other games have been doing it for years.

Even if the erratic framerate and godawful tearing provide a constant annoyance?

Shoot the fucker in the head and dance on its fluffy corpse because there are plenty of hotlap videos out there where somebody is winning Fruit Ninja with the backgrounds.

Yeah, I am not hopeful, but I still want to play it myself before writing it off completely, the reason they pushed it back was due to performance, I dread to think what it was like then.......

Man, August has been a disappointing month for gaming.

Lol at first it looked to me like a glitch, but then as I continued watching the video it became apparent it's a feature. :) They really should fix that.

And AC has far more technical issues than PCcars.

Shhh.. those are fighting words around some of these parts. Part of the problem is that there is a 'balance' of 'sim-ness' these developers have to follow. You can have these small to mid size(Kunos, SMS,etc) developers make these extremely intensive sims, but have them lack in presentation. Or you can have huge developers/publishers(MS,Sony) making games that ease up on the simulation side and really nail down presentation and bugs. It's hard/seemingly impossible to have both so you gotta decide "do I want a true racing sim with minimal polish or a streamlined sim with great presentation."

It's what games used to look like in the olden days. There's no excuse for it any more.

Edit: fuck me, I just read that the day one patch REMOVES Fanatec support that was originally coded in. Sony insisted, apparently. All new PS4 can ONLY support official wheels. That's GTS fucked then.

I wanted a true racing sim. This is far from...minimal polish hahahaah I mean its problems directly impact the simulation. The one thing...that we want. Its not like its just bad textures here or there. Which would have rocked.
Though USgamer apparently played the fucking Xbox Scorpio version lol

But why not both? OK, the deeper the sim the more processing power it uses, but Kunos should have dialled the visuals back to get a solid v-synched 60. Frame drops and constant tearing will destroy all the good work their simulation engine is trying to do.

This whole wheel thing annoys me, I have a perfectly good G29 which I can't use just because Sony doesn't want me to.

Thanks for the OT danowat.

Thinking of picking this up tomorrow, but do I really need another racer right now, as I'm in the midst of F1 2016 at the moment?

I think this looks pretty good though.
