Assetto Corsa (Console) |OT| Kunos tries to console us.

On the strength of the impressions in this very thread, I'd probably say no, at least not in it's current state, considering you've already got F1 2016.

I held off on F1 2016 simply because AC was imminent.

Patriotic leanings?

I don't know. The game has serious performance problems which directly affect gameplay. This is a problem for a racing game. I don't understand how reviewers give a game like this a 9 out of 10.

If there are any Fanatec owners awaiting delivery of this game can you please initially try the game with updates disabled and see if it supports Fanatec in its pre-patch state, as has been reported?

Same issue with F1 2016 too?

Statement with regards to Fanatec not being on the supported wheel list on PS4:

Codemasters will continue to support officially approved peripherals for PlayStation 4 in F1 2016. We appreciate that this is far from an ideal situation and as always we are making every effort we can to support our community. Sadly this matter is out of our hands, but we will continue our dialogue with both Sony and Fanatec to try to find a solution.

I believe so.

Sony being dicks and wanting me to leave their ecosystem.

I don't think Fantec wheels were ever intended to be supported. There must have been some sort of loophole that allowed non-Sony published games to support Fanatec in the short term. Looks like Sony have closed that option now until they see the money form Fanatec.

A Fanatec in Logitech mode might work with the Cronusmax. But I wouldn't bother for AC unless they improve performance.

Depends on who you want to believe, Thomas from Fanatec said it wasn't a money issue last year.

Lol at first it looked to me like a glitch, but then as I continued watching the video it became apparent it's a feature. :) They really should fix that.

Its definitely a feature; the AI drivers are just demonstrating a very high APM :)
Great video review posted before, reinforces to me that my PS4 has been relegated to first party titles only.

Its odd because you know MS ain't benevolent and if they can work with them there is no reason they cant get something done with Sony.
I guess when being a market leader, Sony doesn't need to support small companies for only handful of customers while MS is trying to get as much customers as possible and every single one counts but that's just my opinion :)

I dont think thats it. Otherwise MS would have tried to allow xbox 360 wheels to work. I mean Sony is ok with PS3 fight sticks, Thrustmaster ps3 wheels & ps4 wheels, new logitec wheels for ps4, but no fanatec gear outside of the few games that support them. Its just so odd all around. What MS did was obviously business decision, the old stuff doesnt work. What soney is doing......¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Soooo if Project Cars didn't hold my interest but do like Gran Turismo, would this be a game for me? I do like simulators but P.C. was just eh to me.

I'd say doubtful.

PCars and AC aren't collect-em-ups like GT, and generally don't have such an expansive career mode.

I think Assetto Corsa blows PCars away with how the cars feel personally. I don't think too fondly of PCars.

It's track variety is great but other than that I am very meh when it comes to it.

I'm looking forward to trying it out, the racier tyre compounds in PCars, slicks in particular, are immensely good, the road tyre physics are trash (IMO)

Not looking for expansive just something fun to drive.

Yeah the physics in P.C. didn't do it for me, felt weird.

Same as the olden days, you don't!

Sad, but true.

Man, I'm getting fed up with videogames. There's no excuse for Assetto Corsa performing so badly on consoles when it runs perfectly on lesser-specc'd PCs. Well, no excuse except a shoddy port from an inadequately talented or under-funded studio, of course. AC should be THE best sim on consoles (and it might still be, I guess) but fucking erratic frame rates and biblical screen tearing should really be a thing of the past in 2016.

Well i was never going to be both this AND F1...i went for F1 ....Maybe in a few patches performance can increase but then by that that time ....Neo...GT......

Thanks for the OT, great read. I haven't been keeping up to date on this so nice to see all the info in 1 place. Wounded there isn't any Evo models, or are they DLC cars?

I'm adding reviews as I find them to the OP, I don't think a separate review thread is necessary, rightly or wrongly, I am not sticking up some of the smaller outlets, I think some of them are glossing over many of the issues and aren't representative of the current state of the game.

I won't be adding an Opencritic number as they don't segregate between platforms like Metacritic do.

Depends on who you want to believe, Thomas from Fanatec said it wasn't a money issue last year.
Leaning out of the window here, but my thoughts are: Fanatec has their wheel already out on Xbox and Sony doesn't want the same wheel(-base, the expensive part) to be usable on another console... Just to bind people to their ecosystem.
(to be clear, if MS was winning this cycle and the wheel had been out on a Sony platform first, I would expect MS to pull the same bulshit Sony does here)

On the review topic: I think a high metacrtitic score would have helped the sales but many "casual" players would be soured not getting a GT or Forza experience with career, tuning and more content. The actually bad reviews that are more about the PC-sim no-frills structure than about the driving model won't hurt the sales much. Kunos are probably more than happy if they can get 100,000 copies sold to the few people who just want to drive a car every once in while without the need for a good campaign or car collector mode. If they don't get there now, they will when the pric drops and they have 25 Porsches in the game.

Edit: great work with the reviews @danowat! If the opencritic score is very different including PC scores, that could be interesting for people who are stumbling into this thread. Maybe in brackets with a remark that PC scores are included. The weird thing is that AC improved so much on PC over time with so much more content and some some reviews are from 2014. on the other hand, how many small review outlets who are not familiar with reviewing sims might have looked at all the higher PC scores and then didn't dare to rate it as low as they originally would have. Definitely an interesting case.

Then why did they allow it with the xbox360 fanatec wheels?
Fanatec wheels were available on ps3 before they ever made a 360 version.

Man, I'm glad I gave this a miss. I was tempted to double dip as I've had AC on Steam since early access and love it, but instead of purchasing the console version I've just bought the Red Pack DLC on Steam seeing as though it's 20% off. It seems like my money is better spent on a fully functioning product.

Exactly. My Fanatec CSR worked on everything and it was fantastic. I upgraded to the CSW V2 believing that it would be the same situation but unfortunately it is not the case. At least the Xbox has all the 3rd party racing games and an excellent racing series with forza.

if anyone has a capable gaming PC, i strongly encourage you to get that version. stable framerate plus good graphics plus tons of mods (cars, tracks, sounds you name it) = good shit. if console is your only choice, then i will say that the game controlled pretty well with a gamepad...MUCH better that project mierda.

Just to be sure, do I understand it right that the console version includes all the same features as the PC version, the 3 dream pack DLC packs minus the Audi R8 and the Corvette, but doesn't include the Japan DLC pack and Red Pack? Are the tracks from those packs included? And did they really not pack in Trento Bendone, the hill-climb track of which Kunos said it might look too outdated for the console audience?
Ehat is it with the pre-order cars? That's just the 488GTB, R8 and Vette? All other cars are either regular DLC or included in every copy no matter where or when you buy it?

I searched for definitive information on what the console version includes, I couldn't find anything concrete.

505 is supposed to be the team responsible for the console version. I can honestly state the sim I play on PC is pretty damn good; Kunos aren't inadequately talented at all! I guarantee getting rid of the post processing filters would have seen the PS4 hit a consistent 60fps - Yebis is a total POS if frame rates are important.

This. PC version has plenty of benefits and none of the issues the consoles have presuming you have a modestly spec'd PC (eg i5 and GTX 660).

I hope a few more patches fix the console versions ASAP.

Ok, so doom and gloom on the tearing and performance issues.

I'm still excited to try it out next Tue night.

I'm holding out hope that Kunos can hopefully patch some of the issues. SMS did 10 patches on console, and despite still not fixing all the issues, the framerate was ironed out for the most part for the ps4.

So maybe the game can get better with time.

Pre-Ordering digitally, I'm not happy with missing the Gamestop exclusive cars, there's no DLC packs on psn yet.

edit- TJP! You beat me to it with the patch hope!

Great OT! I'm really looking forward to this despite some of the performance issues that have been mentioned. I keep hearing great things about the physics and for $40 with Amazon Prime I think it will be worth it to me just for hot lapping the Nurburgring. Can't wait for the Porsche DLC and hope we get more cars and tracks as time goes by.

Ok, normal pre-order bonuses are 488GTB, Audi R8 V10 Plus and Corvette C7 Stingray.
Gamestop has this:
prestige-pack.jpg

But what does exclusive pack mean? Three of the cars are normal pre-order bonuses, so not exclusive to that exclusive pack. The Audi A1 will be free DLC on PC if I remember right and I can't imagine you will buy a "Japan" DLC pack on console without the GT-R Nismo (and a GT86), that would devalue that DLC pack for a lot of Nissan fans. Will you own those double then if you pre-ordered at gamestop? I still don't get the full picture here.

All this pre-order DLC business just makes things really messy, I'll be honest, I didn't even know about this Gamestop exclusive content until today.

Oh, I know - I've got bucketloads of respect for Kunos, and that's why my post was carefully worded to not be aimed at them. If they had final approval of the port though... well, how could they deem this to be acceptable? I guess after the big delays and with GTS just around the corner decisions had to be made to get it out regardless, but I can't imagine that Kunos are happy with the released product.

I absolutely hated AC when I first played it. I was so close to refunding it but I'm glad I stuck with it because on a wheel, the feel is unrivalled imo. I'll caveat that by saying *after* you've tuned the FFB gain for each car. Yes, each car. The console version may be better but the PC version, the levels are all over the shop. Some cars use nowhere near the maximum amount, others clip like crazy and feel completely binary. I'd be worried about the console version not being able to effectively tune this. PC version has mods to show a FFB graph allowing you tune it well. If you can only see a percentage in the console version, it's going to be hard.

Some tips;

Tune the FFB

Turn the tire squeal down so it kicks in later

Find a time of day that looks pretty and just leave it there (5pm?). Most of the pre-release console videos do this and there's a reason why

Reduce the clutch so it's fully engaged at something like 80% if you're using an H-gate

Use a calcualtor online to set your FOV to the 'correct' value and then increase it slowly until you get the required sense of speed back without compromising the view too much.

Move the seat all the way back and angle it upwards slightly so it's more level

Over 50% of the cars are good as they are in my opinion, but my installed version is quite new, maybe they adjusted some. Different strengths in FFB can be there for a reason, like caster or scrub radius (like in "some have a heavy steering feel, others give almost to feedback in real life), it's more a philosophical question then. I wouldn't say that holds true for how AC handles FFB, so fine tune away, but I'd keep the global sliders as they are and maybe just adjust understeer and steering rack a little bit.
Edit: Kunos do actually simulate non-linear power steering in a primitive fashion.

Yes, you can set the time the tire squeal sets in. The default is too early in my opinion and gives you the impression of tire lock when they are still rolling.

It's different per track, but I agree that at some ToD, the track can look really boring. Never as bad as pCARS at high noon and clear conditions though.

Here I actually disagree. They changed the clutch modeling and torque and it's great as it is, if you have set up your H-pattern drivers to some sporty short gear-change distances/ways. What is bad is low-rev-low-throttle fast-clutch in, but AMS is the only sim that is giving a fuck about that so far (not sure about iRacing though).

Use a calcualtor online to set your FOV to the 'correct' value and then increase it slowly until you get the required sense of speed back without compromising the view too much.
100% the right way to do it and SUPER important.

Move the seat all the way back and angle it upwards slightly so it's more level
more level, yes, but my opinion about the seat position: Imagine the entire car from where the cockpit is on your screen going into your living room (or wherever you are playing) and set the seat position so that the front tires are at the right, natural feeling distance to where you are sitting/playing from. It makes judging your turn-in point in sharp corners a lot easier.

Edit: FOV calculator. Might also be good under the tuning guide in the OP.
If you know better calculators (with seat position recommendations for example), let me know, I'm interested.

Great tips guys, thank you!

I remember with pCARS it was days of sorting and trying to even understand what some of the options meant.

Not sold on this and a great driving model and physics aren't enough for me (got bored from Dirt Rally after a month due to lack of content). Need to see a DF video as well but will wait for a sale.

I've been playing it for some time now and FFB is constantly changing as they tweak cars, sometimes drastically. I played recently and some cars needed almost 30% adjustment to bring them back to where I know I'd set them previously. I think though tbh they're more correct now, a lot of them are back to ~100% whereas previously they could be as low at 70% or as high as 130%. My enjoyment of the game goes up massively when the FFB is tuned .

Re. the clutch, I am constantly getting duff downshifts on the stock setting. Obviously I don't do this in a real car so the standard range feels very off to me. Like the clutch isn't disengaging at the same rate a real one would.

Jesus. That's going to be brutal.

If it's happening, I fully expect GT-fans to come in here and shitting about not buying it because of that, but still defending GT6 in the GTS threads. Have you seen the DF videos for GT6? I mean it was a different time and a different console, but even I would say that it didn't affect the gameplay (much) in GT6. In pCARS it could affect gameplay in some places, for me at least, even though the framerate was better than GT6 most of the time on my XB1.
We'll see where AC falls in terms of framerate and tearing affecting gameplay.

I totally understand that some people are very sensitive to tearing though, they should at least wait out on AC.
Personally I'm more of micro-stutter guy. Get headaches after an hour even if the average framerate was almost perfect and I wasn't consciously aware of the stutter 99% of the time.

Do you have a TH8A-shifter? Have you tried tweaking the distance between gears to be more sporty in the Calibration software - TH8 RS Tool v1.0.7.0 on PC?

The annoying thing with these sims from the PC are how unpolished they always seem to be. I LOVED the handling on Race Pro on the 360 but the rest of the game was a hot mess. Always terrible UI, little to no real gameplay structure. It always feels really baron and pointless and is solely there for the great handling model, hence why I end up using them for just hot lapping and enjoying the handling model and self improvement aspect. To be fair on them very few driving games have ever had any really competent career aspect. Nothing that felt right for a driving game, nothing that makes me feel like a professional racer in any way, especially the ones going exactly for that vibe (cos they dumb everything down so much you feel like a 5 year old being condescended to).

I just wish at least we could get the best tracks and handling model like in this game, combined with the slick presentation of a Forza or GT (but GT desperately needs audio that is at least as good as AC!), and THEN get them to assemble it all together so it feels like you're actually achieving something, and no not the soul crushingly repetitive grind of GT's stagnant gameplay loop of old.
