The annoying thing with these sims from the PC are how unpolished they always seem to be. I LOVED the handling on Race Pro on the 360 but the rest of the game was a hot mess. Always terrible UI, little to no real gameplay structure. It always feels really baron and pointless and is solely there for the great handling model, hence why I end up using them for just hot lapping and enjoying the handling model and self improvement aspect. To be fair on them very few driving games have ever had any really competent career aspect. Nothing that felt right for a driving game, nothing that makes me feel like a professional racer in any way, especially the ones going exactly for that vibe (cos they dumb everything down so much you feel like a 5 year old being condescended to).

My man!!! Race Pro was my favorite racer last gen. Nothing could beat the physics IMO. Average looking and about as barebones as you could get, but the feel of the game was sublime and the track list was the best on console bar none.

I'm hoping AC can be that for me this gen regarding racing feel. Maybe more tracks will come in time.

I enjoy pCARS career for feeling like a pro driver, and I love the race weekend format, but it does have it's drawbacks if you go into a second season with the same team. The tracks, times, and weather are all the same as the first season.

I just wish at least we could get the best tracks and handling model like in this game, combined with the slick presentation of a Forza or GT (but GT desperately needs audio that is at least as good as AC!), and THEN get them to assemble it all together so it feels like you're actually achieving something, and no not the soul crushingly repetitive grind of GT's stagnant gameplay loop of old.

It's probably a topic for a separate thread, but I've thought about this quite a lot, to the point where (some years ago) I started writing a design brief for such a game with a deep narrative drive and RPG elements.

When I play PCars, I role play, the structure of that career gives me the framework for me to pretend I am a race car driver, I understand many people don't want to imagine this, and I think that my role playing could work as a game mechanic.

That said, I (and most sim racers) don't need to be pushed to race a sim, I put an ungodly amount of hours into LFS, which is the barest of bare bones.

Frame rate issues, screen tearing are terrible, but some of those reviews are laughable. I probably won't be getting this any time soon because of how they dealt with the DLC and pre-order situation, plus the technical issues, but the irony was palpable.

Yep, amazing game, had the best online races ever. Just a shame about the bug that would lose your career, alas that killed the community.

Has Kunos said anything about adding possible American tracks? I mean, I understand the close to home mentality, but to see not even one North American track is somewhat discouraging.

Well it's come and I'm not looking forward to it, going by the feedback.

Not too sure, especially for racing games, hardware architecture was chosen correctly.

Developers: Can we have a format that's easy to develop for?

Sony: Sure, here you go

Developers (specifically PC): Oh fuck, back to school!

Seriously, what the hell has happened? People complain about Gran Turismo but Project CARS and this are a mess, on hardware that's, apparently, easy to develop for! I swear this shows up some PC developers more than others because they just can't seem to get it.

This is becoming a wasted generation. I hope Sony goes bespoke again.

Gameplay...please be good.

Will preorder on Sunday to begin the preload on the US store, so pumped!

Very happy that in the same year we got Asseto and GT Sport

Yeah, I agree.

AC feels so great though that I wouldn't be surprised if the Forzas/GTs start to feel a bit naff when using a wheel and they become hard to go back to.

I really struggled to enjoy Dirt Rally that much because the feel just isn't there coming from AC.

Shame that the console ports are lacking; still picking this up to get my fix until I get around to building a new rig, but I was hoping the delays would have done more for the game's performance.

Ha holy crap I loved Race Pro. so weird seeing others like it.

Adding myself to the chorus singing its praises. Good shit, it was.

Just looked at my history, last time I played Race Pro was August 2010 (6 years ago FFS!!!), and I still need three non multiplayer achievements, wonder how likely it is it will ever come to BC.....

We played it on the 360 about 2 months ago during out gaming BBQ. Everyone HATED It but me ha

It's been years since I had the pleasure, but I remember enough to understand why the creaky graphics and cheap production values would make for a poor first impression, particularly on those who might not share the same passion for motorsport as the admittedly niche demographic the game targeted. Given some time, though, and the SimBin magic at the game's core was undeniable.

I'm hoping that the same will eventually be true of AC on consoles, and that after post-release patch(es) have made the visual performance more consistent, Kunos' sublime car dynamics will shine through without much distraction.

The physics is nailed ....once i got my ffb settings dialed in it's so close to the feel of the PC version it's not even worth mentioning.

Personally, i love it.

To those who've played - how would you compare contrast the career mode to GT or pCARS? I generally really enjoy GT's career modes but didn't love pCARS. It's where I spend most of my time in racing games so it's kind of make or break.

Thanks!

Oh ya wasn't that at all. They didn't like the sim aspects. Back then the GFX and such weren't surprising at all as many titles had far more issues than now. And even less reaction from gamers
As for AC on consoles. I don't believe in hoping something will get magically fixed. They asked for money and offered what they offered. Will be more excited to see if someone else tries and what we can get in the future.

There are "get 3 stars" challenges, similar to GT, but no car-pokemon (not being dismissive here, just a term that I like) and apart from achievements, there is nothing they unlock. Difficulty-wise some are "ok", others are heart-brakingly hard (think "all gold" in the last license tests in GT and then some).

Is this what crash/collision physics are I'm AC?

http://youtu.be/yHyzW_V1dkQ
yes, though I've never seen it that bad myself. I'd say it's better than Forza and about as bad as GT, but only thanks to the tire physics.

Personally it doesn't bother me much, as long as - unlike in GT - the race is OVER for the guys involved after that. So it doesn't matter if you spin 30 meters into the run-off areas or only 8m, you won't get back on the track anyway. Its main purpose is to discourage stupid online behavior for me.
In smaller crashes, nudges and bumps or if you are mishandling the car, the damage simulation in AC is pretty ok (which is what I want in offline races), don't expect fancy visual damage though. It's more in the line of "now you have less/zero front downforce", "clutch damage", "suspension left bias".

From the video I just watched it looks good! It doesn't look perfect but I think I'd enjoy it a lot more than PCars.

However if this was the next GT game you'd have people in here bashing it to high heavens! The trees are GT5 bad, you'd have hundreds of posts in here with zoomed in screenshots of the trees with comments about how lazy the Devs are. And I'm not exaggerating, that's how stupid GT threads get!! They only focus on one thing and the game is shit because of it.

Back on topic I really need a wheel for this and GT Sport! This game looks like it only works well with a wheel. Are there any impressions with Dualshock 4?

There a giga-ton of steam achievements, most of them are just "bronze in this event", "silver in this event", "gold in this event" and that for every event (446 steam achievements). But SOME are kinda unique and can make for a nice challenge.

Here is a list with the special ones and some more because they had cool names ;)

->Beat 1:28:50 at Monza (historical) with the Lotus 49

You were flying over the kerbs out there!
->Beat 1:43:00 at Imola with BMW2 M3 GT2.

A man with a german accent on the phone says he has a contract for you
->Beat 1:42:00 at Imola with the BMW2 M3 GT2.

Vallelunga Instructors are giving you the thumb, well done!
->Beat 1:34:00 at Vallelunga with Formula Abarth

(Secret) Destroy completly your car
->Obtained if the player reaches the max level of damage on his car.

We expect better of GT because of the huge investment and development involved. Like comparing 25 guys making an indie movie to 15,000 working on a Disney movie, when the resource is there you expect no stone un-turned.

However at the core of it all is the fundamental gameplay mechanics, they have to work whatever the development budget.

I have been reading conflicting reports... will there be Fanatec support on the PS4? I read that there will be a patch later on. Is this accurate?

Pretty sure PD is still only 100ish I'm terms if total staff. MS I think had much more on Forza.

Yeah, I don't really care about damage modeling in sim games. Most of them still look like shit and there's better things for a smaller team to focus on.

Hitting a wall and getting a "engine fucked" notice under sim damage is fine for stuff like this.

Nice video, Karak.

Finally some background music in the menus.

I quite like the look of the console UI, I think that'll be the one I'll use when it comes to the PC.

I have the game on the PC and love it (166 hours), and even though the PS4 version seems to be shitty and I don't even *have* a PS4, I might get a used copy down the road because I just love physical games I can put on my shelf.

If they finally get around to getting full VR support in the PC version (support is currently still considered in alpha), hopefully they manage to find a way to get the PS4 version working with PSVR. AC is one of my favorite titles to run on the Rift.

G'day mate. Have you played the PC version?

Have a friend who swears by this game on PC but on trying the ps4 version last night was disappointed with the FFB outta the box.

Can you elaborate a bit further or maybe share your settings?

Cheers old man ;)

Yup, have my own server too and physics are just as good on the PS4 but the ffb needs setting as the stock one is wayyy off.

There is no Vive support and no Oculus support. The videos you are watching are taken on Oculus DK2 hardware.

Fingers crossed that it is coming back for the consumer versions, but Kunos are kinda busy. Their car pipeline is full to burst and they kinda want to start working on AC2 in 2017.

I've been using CV1 for AC since May - it's only gotten better. Pretty sure Vive works fine - might need to use ReVive or something, not sure. Anyway, console thread lol.

Yeah that is why the production size is the main factor in determining the Oscar winners. Oh wait, no it's not.

It is not in any way relevant what the team size is. So they saved tons of cash in development... Is that meant to make up for the games faults? Do you really have to treat games like GTS more harshly because they spent more money developing the product?

This is crazy. You can say sure AC has many and glaring faults, but it costs $19.99. You can't say sure AC has many glaring faults but the devs/publisher didn't invest much but charge us the same anyway. How does that make the game a better buy?

Can anyone compare the UI of the console version compared to the PC one? Apparently the PC version was meant to get a user-friendlier(?) version like it's console counterpart, but last I checked it was still a bit of a cluserfuck.

How is it bad? Seems super simple to me and many leagues ahead of incompetent messes like the menus of rFactor2 etc

Yes it is related to studio size and investment.
No it's not meant to make up for the game's faults, but In video games, especially racing games, more money, resources, and first party studio backing typically equals higher production values/a more polished product.

Do we treat GTS more harshly? Hell yes! If they have 10 times the development budget and number of people as resources to work on their product as a small studio and they release it with frame rates all over the place, mediocre graphics, and constant tearing, you're damn right people will judge it harshly.

Do you really expect a small studio with limited budget, time, and resources to produce the best graphics, physics, and have more cars and tracks than some of the AAA developers?

That's not excusing the performance issues at all but let's be realistic in expectations.

As Alan said,
However at the core of it all is the fundamental gameplay mechanics, they have to work whatever the development budget.

Lets remember that the majority of gamers would read your post and say "what the fuck is this dude talking about?"

How the hell do we expect people to have all this data? Is every gamer, brand new to the industry supposed to know this stuff? What about 10 devs versus 20? What about 10 with 5 having a ton of experience versus 20 having less experience but more people. What about 10 with a grant from their nation versus 20 who didn't have one? This kind of thinking becomes utterly and terribly charity driven.

For the majority of gamers. A company asks for money and the game is judged against its priced peers for what you see and experience on the screen.

Thats not arguing for or against just saying. There are issues either way.

No, those vids are CV1 (but he does have older vids on his channel that were done with DK2). And AC updated shortly after the CV1 came out to have alpha support for the most recent SDK. I've been running AC on my CV1 since I got it in June. And I believe Vive can work out fine on it with the whole reVive thing.

But technically you're correct it that it's not formal full support out of alpha or beta. I suspect if they can finalize that on PC, they'd then be able to move on to seeing if they can manage getting it working on PSVR.
