Been replaying MGSV lately... Man, it's so good! (Also: Your favorite weapons?)

All three of those are superb... Pitch Black is one of my most played. Great set pieces with some sense of travel. A handful of the missions feel a bit like Side Ops whereas those have grand areas mostly designed specifically for them.

Voices is another fave of mine... replayed it recently trying to make make the camera use look movie like...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD3pI7dZSqI

Total stealth, no HUD... and in general I slowly sneak through, panning the camera, focusing on visual clues, etc.
I just skipped around your video. Does the mist always appear in this level? I remember there being mist when I played it too. Also, the way you finished the Man on Fire battle was AMAZING. Rocket-punching the water tower to collapse it and snuff him out, then escaping the chopper and blasting away at Psycho Mantis with the chaingun before the Man on Fire comes back to life and hurls one last-ditch fireball at the chopper. I had no idea he will attempt to shoot the chopper — that's so cool!

I like the fact you have to completely ghost it. Combined with the swampy terrain under cover of darkness, weaving over and under boardwalks, it's a satisfying challenge trying to crawl past the snipers and reach each scripted conversation in time to eavesdrop. I have vivid memories of it, lying in the brush just beyond the light of the torches. When I finally reached the viscount, I let out a sigh of relief. Brutally difficult, but satisfying. <3
It's actually one of the cooler bases in the game IMO and yet because of Lingua Franca, and how it gives me nightmares haha, I tend to ignore re-visiting it.

One fun thing to do is let the human trafficker from Hunting Down get to Kbiza Camp, and then try assassinate him inside the cabin

https://youtu.be/bBfazNVpPEI?t=11726

great place to infiltrate at night during, too
https://youtu.be/bBfazNVpPEI?t=11231
and gorgeous during the rain, especially the swamp area

haha but yeah, the heli gun still gives it blunt damage i guess. i got a bit lucky with my timer...literally a few days before, i was messing around with that tactic and i must have failed a half dozen times cuz he 'came back' too quickly before i could extract haha...

there's a few interesting ways to incapacitate him...first time i ever played that mission, I use my electrocuting bionic arm haha
https://youtu.be/E822qW3D2HA?t=11
and wasn't even sure it worked, i was still kinda freaked out and i said F THAT i'm out of here, running straight for the heli and praying that i make it =p

/edit2/ oh and the village you're thinking of is Qarya Sakhra Ee (i had to google the spelling heh) have you down the Subsistence mission there yet? it's a pretty awesome mission to do Subsistence + Lethal because you basically have to procure-on-site rocket launchers..

I need to play this game again. Absolutely incredible experience. It more than made up for snooze fest that was MGS4. My favourite weapons are mainly the gadgets. I love smoke grenadine tanks, running past the guards, excrracting the tank and getting out of there again unseen. Cardboard box is awesome and Decoys are fun too. A silenced sniper rifle helps and D Dog is my favourite companion.

I'm so happy with MGS5 it's unreal. I'm just glad it gave me the creative tools to be sneaky again instead of forcing action in my fave constantly like MGS4.

A link to my short MGS5 clip. Box shenanigans.
This is a contender for the funniest/coolest videogame clip I've ever seen. Simply amazing. I badly want to recreate this the next time I play MGSV!

Nice tip with the cabin in Hunting Down. There are actually quite a few missions with neat details involving targets arriving at designated points and you being able to snipe them through windows, etc, in the middle of their meeting. It's all about timing and positioning!

EDIT: Oh wow, the guards even have special dialogue when they find a wounded comrade. "Hang in there! You're not going to let this kill you! Th-the doc will be there in no time!"

And agreed on rain at night in Africa. The atmosphere is incredible. Especially when you're in a camp with streetlights or burning oil drums nearby, and you can see the individual raindrops on the wind.

There are so many cool ways to defeat the Man on Fire. You can pop the water tanks on him, or collapse the water towers. You can knock him into the reservoir pool with splash damage from a rocket. You can stun him with a fully charged punch. You can run him off the cliff with a jeep. You can wait 10 minutes for scripted rain to occur. You can even Fulton extract him if you manage to make the Third Child appear and stun him. It's also possible to beat him with the water gun, although this takes a while (but at the same time it makes it more like a traditional MGS boss battle with a health bar, so it's all about perspective, I suppose)!

Yeah that Hunting Down part is fun. I actually had a chance to 'hold up' the target, if you listen close. Venom says don't move. But another guard spots it and I got trigger happy. I've been replaying that mission once every week or two, trying to get a perfect 'Hold Up from under the Basement Floor' but that other guard patrolling always screws it up haha need to take him out or something first.

By the way, if you haven't tried, use the 'Weather Bomb' to make it rain in Afghanistan. It's kinda cool in in terms of aesthetic, and just makes it a fun different way to see the map haha.

yes i love that mission. first attempted it at night and i remember the tension of hiding under a rock while flares shot overhead. really cool base design! one time i did the subsistence mission where i ended up knocking out all guards at the base and using the mortars to take out the tanks. of course there are so many ways to play...

Then when you include Ground Zeroes, which is also labeled MGSV and is essentially its MGS2-style tanker chapter... Goddamn, MGSV is incredible.

hell yes it is. its a beast of a meal!

So I'm not the only one replaying the game? Awesome.

WDTBS is a great mission. I remember getting to the bridge base and rescuing the POW who then tells you where the Honey Bee is. Just when I finished I talked to a friend about the mission and how he completely skipped that. He didn't even know there wasa POW there.
This happened a lot throught the game and we compared how we finished almost all the missions. The replayability in the game is amazing.

One of my favorite missions is the one you have to rescue another POW (can't remember the name of the mission but you can see the POW on a jeep near a collapsed building/base... where the
final Quiet mission is
).
The thing is, I slowly followed the POW to this base and ghosted the mission.
The time of day shanged so a lot of shifting happened, tanks and jeeps comming and going and sometimes just dodging out of the way at the last minute.
It took me almost 2 hours but the trek felt amazing.

As for fav weapon... the auto tranq snipper with a supressor.

I did expect much more from this game's story (and that's mostly because of the misleading trailers) but it blew me away with the gameplay.

First time I played through this I never saw an enemy chopper come to investigate outside of scripted helicopters already present, but it keeps happening to me now! One was flying to a base after I'd driven away, was in freeroam.

Which mission number is the Subsistence run at Qarya Sakhra Ee? I want to try it now! Has the potential to be a new favorite. :)

And using the mortar to take out those two guards? Brilliant!

EDIT: Oh, it's right in the title of your video!

Hiding is amazing in Qarya Sakhra Ee. So many nooks and crannies. You can even hide under the struts of several buildings, not to mention the rocky outcroppings up above.

I haven't done much wacky things with V lately, but this was my favorite.
Oh wow, I remember this video! The timing is beyond amazing. How many attempts did it take you to pull this off? :-D

I think I might've seen this once or twice. I wonder what triggers the appearance of gunships in free roam? Do you remember where you saw an unscripted chopper?

Wait, I think that's the Eastern Communications Post in C2W, not Qarya Sakhra Ee. I'm looking in the player's guide and I don't see Qarya Sakhra Ee on the map for that mission.

Yeah, it looks pretty good too because of the reflections of water on all the rock in Afghanistan. Quick example though it's kinda grassy here...
Rainy Afghanistan - https://youtu.be/Ga4SVPWADHM?t=212

btw that's Mission 49. the subsistence one. and about helis in free roam. I think when a chopper shows up in free roam, it's unscripted for them to search for you or otherwise respond to an alert/alarm -- but the reason they're there in the first place is a Side Op.

so, they're not just flying in from out of the map. they're spawned on a static patrol route for a Side Op. but in doing that, they can respond to other things.. alerts or alarms at bases. same way in Missions... e.g. there's a heli for.... Mission 5 Over the Fence, and it can respond to activity at the base. There's also one for Blood Diamond, and it can respond in different ways to both the plantation or the mine. similarly though, i've had a helicopter from a side op begin to search around the mine after i caused an alert because it was stationed near a nearby outpost for a separate side op.

/edit/ oh and yeah i was just showing subsistence gameplay in general. i just showed the c2w one cuz i think it's the only highlight i remember... and sadly the first time and also coincidentally the most recent time i did mission 49, both times PS Share screwed up and never recorded the last 15 minutes of gameplay -- i tried to save and there was barely a minute or two so i lost any fun highlights i had. but it has lots of cool things to do in subsistence... you're basically taking out tanks so you can sort of imagine how creative you can get if you want to do it lethally.

Nope, there definitely is a Subsistence mission for that base as well. Don't remember the mission number, though.

Just checked, it's Mission 49.

Sucks at poetry
This game is so good. I actually enjoy managing all the mother base stuff (though I hate actually being there cuz it seems kinda huge, and empty), and I don't mind the sparse open world. Somehow it feels more realistic, and I usually listen to tapes on my journey.

Stealing shit is the best. I tranqed 3 guards watching a tank, then fultoned the tank from behind, and as it started rising they turned around and spotted me, but immediately fell asleep XD

Ah, thanks for clarification on the correct Subsistence mission. Definitely will try Mission 49. Also will try the rainy weather bomb in Afghanistan.

And that makes sense about the gunship being tied to certain side ops but straying off the beaten path when it responds to alerts elsewhere in the area.

It's also neat how the guards in one outpost will sometimes respond to an alert at a neighboring outpost. IIRC, the guards in Mission 13 who close the perimeter around Mfinda Oilfield actually come from Kiziba Camp.

yeah in general the oil refinery gets reinforced from Kbiza even in free roam... i got my ass handed to me by them because they kept flanking me... once here where i barely survive thanks to a quick reflex pill (i had finished clearing the search team from inside the refinery when reinforcements from kbiza flanked me) ... and then even more out in the open and at least one had a shotgun -- game over lol

i still die at least once every few times i play the game because of how deadly shotguns can be in close quarters if you get careless, and in general how surgical S Rank guards are with AKs and mortars lol. like, this time...

Pretty sure it was tank mission 01 that was available so didn't have a helicopter associated, and was half way across the map.

Man, your videos are amazing. I'm currently working through all of the old MGS games (currently playing MGS2, the last one I haven't played), but your videos make me want to dive straight back into MGSV. Around 200 hours in and I'm still not bored of it.

The reflex pill allows you to go into reflex mode at any time, right? That sounds like fun — I should try that! But does it restrict mission rankings?

Haha, I just watched this. That's so clever: He drops a truck outside the Devil's House, then lures the Man on Fire into destroying the water tower and stunning himself, then he drops his horse in the bed of his truck, hops on the horse, and recalls the truck in a Fulton extraction to exfiltrate the hot zone.

I see he leans off the side of the horse when it's being air-lifted. Is that necessary?

I think it's called black ocelot, was pre-order dlc but idk if it's standard too.

Edit: good question, I will have to try some airborne horse exfiltration myself.

His other video of that mission has some guard who treks through most of the mission for some reason? It's all in Japanese so not sure what that's about.

Huh, neat. I wonder if it will be included in the Definitive Edition. I might actually double-dip on this game. I like the idea of GZ and TPP being on one disk with all DLC.

If you're talking about doing it mid combo you just hold L2 before finishing the combo so double tap R2 and then hold L2. You might just need to hit R2 once though, can't remember but you'll figure it out now.

You can punch them and then hold aim to temporarily grab their gun. Can't remember if that will become your main if you don't already have one.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense, actually. You're holding L2, the aim button, and you're doing it mid-combo at the point where he would normally smack the gun out of their hand.

Man, I love this game so much.

Hey, I remember hearing that sometimes you can see members of your intel team out in the field, way off in the distance, snooping around enemy bases, scouting out resources, etc — a clever lil' Easter egg that shows how they gather intel. But I was wondering if anyone ever caught this on video? I remember several people here claiming they saw this, but I'd like to see it myself.

Pitch Black is amazing. Also enjoyed doing the Total Stealth version. Code Talker is my most played one and I actually enjoyed the Skulls fight there. It was a good Sniper battle, though obviously not as advanced as The End. I wish the mansion was bigger. MGSV lacks indoor locations.

In terms of FOB i'd go for the ones with flame resources and common metal at S rank. Those are the ones you'll need the most.

In regards to not installing the updates i'm not 100% sure how it'll affect your game. I know you won't have access to your online GMP but that honestly depends on how long it's been since you last played the game.

You won't be able to take part in FOB events and you won't be able to develop weapons/items that have been added since launch. FOB events reward you with things like new camos, new weapons and base colours. Also helps a lot with gaining resources faster.

In terms of being invaded. It doesn't happen frequently enough for it to be really a bother. If you don't invade people you're less likely to be invaded yourself. Whenever i've lost resources from FOB invasions I haven't really felt stung or anything. It's usually such a small amount that I barely realise if i'm honest.

Hmm does anything transfer from the FOB's to Mother Base resources-wise?

What online GMP? I stopped playing the game before I built a FOB, one of the reasons I traded the game in when they started wanting insurance money so you didn't get invaded.

The cynic in me (which is pretty big) thinks that I am going to get some wanker come in and rob all my stuff, not that I have much anyway, but that it will happen and I'll get wiped out, because if that were to happen, there is a high probability that I would lose my temper and just quit playing again.

Once I install the update there is no going back, I am surprised it asked me and didn't install automatically as the single player update did.

What are the FOB events anyway? I have seen them mentioned on the start-up screens, I am bothered that I wouldn't be much good at them anyway :/

I don't know what to do.

When I replayed the game 8 months after launch I had loads and loads of rewards to claim. The game added a lot of rewards for certain objectives and for FOB stuff. I had like 5 million GMP all of a sudden, and my development gained 20 levels. It seems the days of grinding materials are over.

I tried the aerial horse extraction trick but floated gracefully down to earth on the back of d-horse when the truck got collected. There must be a trick to it, seems like Snake ducks automatically when you the truck moves over him, noticed he autoducks if you ride under something low like the pipes in the big hangar base.

Yeah it's a lot easier second time around with all the bonus cash. I did run out of common metals for a time from building all my base back up but haven't bothered rebuilding my fobs again apart from the command platforms.

I honestly wouldn't be able to tell you how it works anymore, since it's been too long (shameful really :D), BUT: Just install it.
The benefits of having an FOB far outweigh the negatives, meaning you can get much more through all that than you might lose to an invasion.

FOB events are FOB-based missions that don't involve other players. Think mission 22. They are generally really easy, but offer really nice rewards.

Aren't those events the virtual league? I promoted a few times and with that currency I could buy bags of S rank soldiers, materials and all.

No that's just the PF battles that run on their own for a few days at a time. FOB events is like the previous poster said.

P.S should I opt in to the second league of PF battles? I don't know what that's about.

Absolutely, but buy Ground Zeroes and play it first since it sets up the story and your data carries over unlocking some neat bonuses. Both are part of the larger MGSV experience, with GZ and TPP being the MGSV equivalent of MGS2's tanker and plant chapters, respectively (in other words, each part of the same story with some time lapsed in between).

Plotwise, you are correct, but:

MGSV was my first Metal Gear game. I found that Ground Zeroes does a terrible job of teaching you how to play, while The Phantom Pain eases you in gradually. I had to play 10-12 hours into TPP before I understood well enough to finish GZ.

Booted this up for the first time in a long time because of this thread and am loving how great it still feels to play. Plus all the free swag I got with the "Challenges" update was a nice surprise.

Cleaning up some trophies but am having a devil of a time with the Combat Deployment one. For some reason I cannot get past the 2nd-to-last one (Secure the Bridgehead) even with all S++ soldiers. Luck just isn't on my side I guess. The wait is painful but some FOB or side missions help kill the time.

Yeah, GZ kind of throws you in the deep end. The only safe space they give you to experiment is the cliff at the start, and even then there's a chance that the first watchtower will spot you with its searchlight.

For those thinking about diving in, here are some helpful tips:

+ When sneaking around, you might notice a white marker onscreen. This indicates an enemy is starting to notice you. It also indicates the direction from which they're starting to notice you. Don't panic — just keep moving in the opposite direction while keeping a low profile (crawling or crouch-walking). That way, the enemy will either chalk up what he saw to his imagination, or if he begins to walk over, you'll no longer be there. Unless the enemy is right next to you, it'll generally take a while for the enemy to realize what they're seeing, so don't worry about the marker... Just lie low or keep moving.

+ The following variables affect how easily enemies can spot you: 1) proximity — how close you are to the enemy; 2) stance — whether you're crawling, crouching, or standing; 3) movement speed — whether you're tip-toeing, walking, jogging or sprinting; 4) camouflage — whether you're blending in with the environment, i.e. bushes; 5) cover — whether you're behind something or under something that will obstruct the enemy's view; and 6) light and shadow — with dark areas making it easier to stay hidden (try turning off searchlights and shooting out lights with a suppressor-equipped weapon).

Weather also plays a role. Sandstorms limit the enemy's vision and hearing, but they also limits yours. Rain muffles the sound of footsteps. Fog reduces visibility. Cloudy weather also reduces visibility, but to a lesser degree.

Generally speaking, if any enemy is within 10-20 paces of you and facing your direction, stick to crawling. If they're farther away or their back is turned, feel free to crouch-walk at full speed. This is perfect for ambushes...

+ Sneak up behind enemies and hold R2 to restrain them. Then you can interrogate them, kill them, or put them to sleep with a chokehold (throttling R2 repeatedly). You can also knock out enemies from afar with your tranquilizer — and if your suppressor hasn't worn out, you can do so silently. You'll then want to pick up the bodies and move them out of sight by dropping them in the underbrush, behind cover or in a shadowy corner.

+ If you're spotted, you'll go into Reflex Mode, where time slows down for a few seconds so you can neutralize the enemy before they trigger the alarm. Quickly go into first-person view and line up a headshot with your crosshairs. Or if they're within reach, just perform CQC (close quarters combat) by repeatedly tapping R2.

+ If you're spotted by the enemy, run away from where you were spotted (the area the guards will search most thoroughly) and hide somewhere until the enemies drop the alert and call off the search.

+ Try misdirecting enemies: Shoot the wall behind them to make them turn around; plant C4 explosives (found in the shed guarded by the searchlight in GZ) on one end of a base, and then detonate them to draw guards away from your location; and so on.

FOB Events are FOBs that you can take on that are fully PVE, meaning no chance ever of retaliation.

FOB missions themselves are hugely rewarding both in your imaginary currency of soldiers/materials and gameplay wise and is a whole hell of a lot of fun. worst case scenario is you may lose a handful of guards, which will be more or less instantly replenished if you are playing the game at all (fultoning during missions, volunteers, and soldiers from combat ops).

the hysteria over the insurance probably did a lot to scare people away from FOB, which is too bad, cos then you are basically ignoring a huge chunk of gameplay. what's more, these FOB missions will probably go away when the servers are finally shut down, meaning they will be lost forever (?). it would be a shame to have never played FOB.

I have just installed the updates, I will have a go at them tomorrow maybe.

I've only benefitted from FOBs. There's so much to gain from them, and so little to lose. Only a portion of your stuff is stored in your FOB, but your FOBs bring back so much more in return. And invasions are seldom to the point that in 200+ hours of playing, I think I was invaded maybe once or twice. And I just ignored it, and lost nothing. They have to get past your guards, cameras, etc, after all. Not that there was much at risk in the first place. I have no idea why anyone would buy "insurance." It's a completely unnecessary microtransaction that just served to spook people with false implications.

Bottom line: Don't let FOBs dissuade you. It's a fun meta-game... There's nothing to lose in the grand scheme of things... And there's certainly no need to buy "insurance."

As I have mentioned before, I have the one free FOB I built that you had to build to continue in the main game, I have 900 and something of the coins that you can use to buy waters with, I seem to get some free coins every now and then.

My issue is that I need processed fuel, I have a fair amount unprocessed but hardly any that is processed that I can use :(

I have seen there is a Skulls mission running at the moment, I will have a look at it tomorrow, quick question, how do you access these 'events'?

Even when you lose from FOBs, it's still kinda cool... It makes the world feel a bit more alive, and there is some fun in seeing whether or not your 'security layout' worked.

I mean, I'm sure at very high level FOB play there's a lot of cheese, and at very low level (namely Missions 20-40 probably), the 'cost' can sting a little bit. But at least sort of mid play, where you casually do FOBs and have just 1 maybe 2 (thanks to free MB Coins) FOBs, it's kinda fun to get invaded and see the logs -- and then try tweak your layouts just for fun.

FOBs I always felt, they got overshadowed by the 'competitive' nature that's innate to MP in the same way the Mother Base part of the game got overshadowed by the 'must.grind.everything' nature of most of us gamers.

You don't really NEED the vast majority of R&D items; you don't really need to care about it or play different for it at all. Neither do you need to care about FOBs and Resources in that way.

And yet at release there was a lot of drama about losing resources, 2AM ninjas, the grinds, the 'i don't want to lose my shit'... and it was mostly misplaced.

Mostly the fault of the game... It is up to a game to understand its audience, and present it in a way that they don't misvalue things.

The new 'SP' FOBs were a huge add... really really should have been at release, and probably by far Konami's best patch for the game.

For whatever reason though, they're a great feature if you just take it in stride as 'more content' and not worry too much about the grinds, the resources, insurance, and just take them as face value -- an awesome Big Shell esque industrial infiltration target with fun verticality and rather awe striking scale.

Holy shit I just started this game for the first time (it's also my first serious attempt at a mgs game, I've spoiled most the lore so I'm not totally lost)

I really like how it's a slice of life anime of metal gear weirdness. Also the choice to tell a lot of the story with great audiotapes is fucking rad IMO, the long cutscenes are a common complaint I see hear with these games, and I guess they could throw in some more long scenes? But I feel like because I'm spending so much time playing the game and listening to these in-depth expository conversations that when the game decides to show me skull face owning a metal gear for the first time in that long-ass scene it's rad as hell and has a ton of impact.

Gameplay wise I've dumped sixty hours into this game since I started it last week and I haven't even got close to getting tired of it. So fucking fun (I'm also excited as hell for survive, even if it's silly the gameplay looks on point so I'm more than in)

Also the soundtrack is a bunch of my legitimate favorite songs, so holy shit I love infiltrating an enemy base and hearing these songs from a different room.

I'm actually way more excited to play the rest of the series after this game, I feel like I'll know ocelot really well as a guy and I feel like I'll have spent a lot of time in a more reserved metal gear game before some of the ridiculous shit like 1/2/3 and revengeance ("not canon" but it is to me, since it makes zero difference)
