The missus and I were at the Foxwoods Sat night for the Showtime fights.... Vernon's fight was ok, Tarvers a snore fest, Donaire's fight was good as was some of the undercard stuff. We were about 4 rows behind the Blue Corner. Chatted briefly with and got my picture taken with Jaidon from the Contender, seems like a nice guy, spent most of the night sitting next to and chatting with a local fighter up there Mark Deluca http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=388836&cat=boxer very nice kid, VERY italian (lots of family and friends happened to be sitting next to us before he came and say in the front in front of us and then chatted with us) looks to have good skills. He thinks Floyd should destroy Hatton this weekend. Had a good time, the sound of the punches man... that's awesome. Hopefully we'll be able to secure these tickets to see Klitschko fight at MSG in Feb.

I was just looking up information on Foxwoods out of curiosity and I guess I wasn't ever aware of the size of this place nor the revenue it generates. Seems way bigger than any of the Indian casinos I've seen here in California. No wonder there's been fights of such import @ that site. I also didn't realize they're the ones affiliated w/ MGM and that that's where a MGM Grand is opening up.

Vernon looked pretty sharp, but Piccirillo was kind of an easy target. Forrest's punches seemed super long. (Go-go-gadget right cross!) I was kinda disappointed in Piccirillo's effort at times. He's a counterpuncher to be sure, but there were rounds where he looked downright passive. He is (or maybe was) better than that.

Tarver looked way better than the last time I saw him (vs Hopkins, which isn't a hard appearance for him to top), but Danny Santiago's not much of a measuring stick. His boastful comments afterwards were pretty ridiculous after what amounts to a "stay-busy" fight vs. a lesser opponent than was previously announced.

The Donaire fight was definitely my favorite of what was televised/available for view.

I've never sat on floor level and as close to a boxing/wrestling ring as this. Are they good seats? Can you see stuff going on across the ring and in the far corner? (Maybe a dumb question...)

Calzaghe-Hopkins now looks tenuous at best.
Unbeaten WBC/WBA/WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe says he has rejected an offer from Golden Boy to fight Bernard Hopkins. "To be honest, the offer wasn't as much as I got for the Kessler fight so from a business point of view the deal doesn't make sense for me," Super Joe told Wales on Sunday. "Hopkins must really convince me with hard cash that he really wants this fight because I'm not sure he does." Calzaghe, who will be at in Las Vegas to cheer on countryman Ricky Hatton next Saturday, added that Hopkins is still his #1 target but only if the numbers add up. He also dismissed a possible bout against IBF light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods saying "While Clinton has a title, he is not a big name and will not get American TV excited – and I want to keep them happy as that's where the money is."

Possible reason for a lower than expected offer:
http://www.secondsout.com/USA/news.cfm?ccs=229&cs=23364

By way of example; the network poured a $3,000,000 license fee plus another seven figures for marketing and production into Joe Calzaghe versus Mikkel Kessler, which garnered a 2.8 rating (the lowest prime-time HBO World Championship Boxing rating ever). But that shouldn’t have surprised anyone. The live afternoon telecast of Calzaghe against Peter Manfredo earlier in the year came in at 1.4.

EDIT: Maybe Winky instead.
Calzaghe may defend title again.

Calzaghe, 35, is hoping to fight Bernard Hopkins at light-heavyweight, but that may not be until next summer.

And with retirement planned in 2008, Calzaghe wants a fight in before that, possibly against Ronald 'Winky' Wright.

"Hopkins looks like he's not going to be ready until June or July and I'm not going to wait for six months," he said.

"I want to keep busy and if 2008 is going to be my last year, I want to be boxing in March, maybe April at the latest.

"Hopefully it will be at light-heavyweight but if I get a big fight at super-middleweight against somebody like Winky Wright I could go for that."

Calzaghe-Hopkins now looks tenuous at best.

Baa! Like I said before, this is all Frank Warren.

Wright is not the fight that Calzaghe NEEDS.

Fight Chad Dawson, that's what I want to see; it would raise a few eyebrows.

The seats were great,(it was just the press area around the ring, then we were like 3-4 rows up from there) but going forward I'd rather not be seating directly behind one corner or the other because it makes taking photos of the fight a bit harder. Could see stuff in the far corner? You mean during the fight or during the sitdown? During the sitdown no because the near corner is blocking you. During the fight somewhat, but again the near corner cornerpost is a bit of a barrier, lucky for me much of the fighting didn't take place on the far corner side and all the knockdowns occurred more to our side.

I need to see Dawson beat up Tarver first thank you very much! (He was in the audience at the fight at the Foxwoods and was introduced in the ring before the fight began).

I go to Google News for info on the Mayweather vs Hatton fight and the UK sports press is fucking pumped for that fight. Too bad they are going to be disappointed.

I do the same and also like to follow the UK TV coverage on this YouTube channel. (His channels keep getting suspended on copyrights.) Dunno; stateside, there's just less coverage of this fight than there is overseas, and certainly less than there was for De La Hoya-Mayweather. They're expecting over a million buys for this fight, and in the upwards of 1.5 million (revenue streams are running @ 60% of DLH-PBF acc. to this article), but we'll see.

De La Hoya: Hatton to remain undefeated (Brightcove)

Also, DLH vs. Hatton likely, regardless of this weekend's result.
Hatton lines up De la Hoya fight

Ricky Hatton is already in talks over a homecoming fight against Oscar de la Hoya as he prepares for Saturday's showdown with Floyd Mayweather.

The 29-year-old wants to face the 'Golden Boy' in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley next year - a fight that could shatter box-office records.

"The chances are very strong," said Hatton's lawyer Gareth Williams.

"We have strong links with Oscar de la Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions and we've had discussions with them."

It is planned that the fight with De La Hoya will go ahead regardless of how Hatton fares in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Episode four is tommorow, most likely covering yesterday's grand arrivals + today's presser. The last episode of DLH-Mayweather 24/7 was IMO the weakest of the four, mostly featuring what seemed like deleted scenes of their scheduled public appearances.

Mate I haven't checked, but do you have episodes 1 & 2 too? As before the fight comes on I'm gonna put them on for the lads to get us stirred up even more

There's flash on the WSHH site of episodes one and two.

These links should still still work (one and two), but you have to rename the extensions to .avi. I think both were on the Stage6 for a time, but they may have been taken off.

Mayweather-Hatton 24/7, Episode Four (WSHH)

NM my misgivings. Episode four was just great -- much better than the conculsion of DLH-PBF 24/7. The closing montage w/ its music and commentary was pretty gripping.

Weigh-in coverage on ESPN360 is supposed to start @ 5:15 PM EST/2:15 PM PST; both HBO and Yahoo! are supposed to start their streams @ 5:30 PM EST/2:30 PST.

Maywheather is fighting tomorrow!!?? I thought he was "moving on to bigger and better things" (as in retiring) after the De la Hoya fight. Where the hell have I been!?

Hatton called Mayweather out after Hatton's last fight. Mayweather told his people to 'make the fucking fight happen' Tomorrow, Hatton is going to get his issue. Mayweather is faster, conditioning is superior, better footwork, longer reach and has better ringmanship. I hope 24/7 got Hatton some new fans because that's the only positive thing he's going to have after he leaves Vegas with an L

Thanks for the update. This is exciting. I've never heard of Hatton but that won't stop me from putting all of my money on Mayweather. Everything you said further convinces me of that as well. I'm not about to miss this for the world.

Late, but Ring updated their ratings w/ a shift in the lowest division.

Following his upset unanimous decision win over Eagle Kyowa, Oleydong Sithsamerchai of Thailand moved up five slots after balloting, from eighth to third in the minimumweight chart. Kyowa fell to fourth.

The Ring's Strawweight Ratings for period ending December 03

1. Yutaka Niida JPN 22-1-3 (8)
2. Florante Condes PHI 22-3-1 (20)
3. Oleydong Sithsamerchai THA 24-0 (8)
4. Eagle Kyowa THA 18-2 (6)

7. Roman Gonzalez NCA 15-0 (15)
8. Donnie Nietes PHI 22-1-3 (13)
9. Rodel Mayol PHI 23-2 (18)

A poll on their site has Hatton as visitors' favorite in tonight's fight, 54% to 45%.
Hatton KO 34.4%

Mayweather KO 9.1%
Mayweather Dec 35.6%
Draw 1.3%

Ring's EIC talks about the impact of this weekend's contest on their P4P chart.
Ring Editor Talks Mayweather-Hatton

Collins told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that if “The ******” Hatton beats “Pretty Boy” Mayweather he will “probably take over the top spot” in the prestigious Ring’s pound-for-pound ratings but made it clear that “it would not be automatic.” Collins noted that if Hatton were to win by a highly controversial decision “we would have to carefully weigh our options.”

On the other hand the Ring editor-in-chief said that if Mayweather wins “in a comprehensive but uninteresting manner he would most likely retain his No.1 spot.” However, Collins revealed that “such a result would create an opening for Manny Pacquiao to become No.1 but Manny would have to beat Juan Manuel Marquez convincingly to move to the top rung.”

He said the reverse is also true and that is if Mayweather wins in an unimpressive manner and Marquez beats Pacquiao, “Marquez could conceivably become No.1.”

Currently, The Ring's Pound for Pound Ratings for period ending December 03

1. Floyd Mayweather USA, welterweight
2. Manny Pacquiao PHI, jr. lightweight
3. Juan Manuel Marquez MEX, jr. lightweight
4. Bernard Hopkins USA, light heavyweight
5. Joe Calzaghe GBR, super middleweight
6. Israel Vazquez MEX, jr. featherweight
7. Miguel Cotto PUR, welterweight
8. Ricky Hatton GBR, jr. welterweight
9. Winky Wright USA, middleweight
10. Rafael Marquez MEX, jr. featherweight

i got mayweather winning in a close fight. i wouldn't be surprised if hatton pulls off the upset though. he's a pressure fighter and he bobs and weaves enough to not get hit too much.

Chavez brought pressure, Chavez caught an avalanche of uppercuts

Chavez threw 103 punches a round on average and 66 were power punches.

Same thing tonight, Floyd wins, convincingly. Yes, Hatton is that dumb, he's a straight line fighter who lunges, just like Baldomir right here.

7yp7ria.gif

Floyd has better footwork, superior conditioning, a 7 inch reach advantage and a clear speed advantage, plus Hatton has no jab, and Joe Cortez is known for breaking up clinches, and they are fighting in a 22 foot ring, plus Hatton cuts easy and Floyd is one of the most accurate boxers ever. This should be a romp for Mayweather

I'll root for Hatton, but he has an uphill battle. Unless PBF gets cute and does something stupid, I don't see Hatton pulling out the victory. Hatton will want to get inside all night, but it's going to be tough, PBF is too sound. Hopefully it's not a controversial fight. Can't wait to hear the crowd, should be pretty crazy. Hope it's a good fight.

From my post:

That was f'n beautiful! First half of the fight, back and forth, but then Mayweather picked up the pace in the 2nd half... landed the lead rights, REALLY dug the body, picked up the aggressiveness and took Hatton out... that first knockout was poetry. The body work he did on Hatton in Round 8 was awesome.

fight was basically over during the 8th. floyd got up in his ass that round.

the same thing would happen to Cotto...

Mayweather is just too sound. Hatton brought good energy early on, got a nice shot early, but he couldn't break PBF's guard. Frustration set in and it was pretty much a wrap. I love the talk about a 2 year hiatus..:lol

yep. Sounds like PBF is going to follow De La Hoya's route in the business. "Semi-retire" and concentrate on promoting, coming out to fight once every couple of years for the right price.

Mayweather said not to expect to see him fight in 2008 and probably not 2009 either. Now boxers say a lot of bullshit, but i can see him doing this. There is really no one out there for him to fight. Keep in mind that he's in the stage in his career where he's not going to take any risky fights. Just big paydays that are sure things.

Couple of more fights and Cotto could be his next big money fight. I definitely want to see that fight happen, sooner rather than later.

Mayweather convinced me tonight. I have always hated that mofo and his boxing style, but in my mind, he answered the critics. He has the style down to win the rounds, even when on TV it looks like he isn't winning as many. A brutal left hook counter punch will do that for anyone... Ask Roy Jones... I don't see anyone beating this guy, including Cotto and Mosley (too old now).

Everything I said about this fight happened, except it ending on cuts. Floyd put him on his ass. I didn't expect that.

Great fight from Floyd, does what he has always done. Adapts.

Some people call him a spoiler etc, but no boxer has found a formula to take hime down - that speaks volumes.

Ricky did as I predicted and came out really fast, but it is telling that his only punch of note was landed in the first round.

As mentioned earlier, Joe Cortez is a bit of a fussy referee, breaks things up, sometimes too eagerly, but it's just something that PBF used to his advantage.

By the round of the knock down, Ricky was all puffed out, but Floyd had plenty left in the tank.

In summation:

Out thought, out boxed, out fought.

After round 1, at no point did I even think to hope that Ricky was gonna get the knock out; the gulf in class was all too apparent - I counted well over 20 telling punches for PBF, but only a couple for Ricky. :(

"That fat fuck ruined professional boxing," says I.

Hatton could pull an upset but Mayweather's reach and skills will probably win the day.

A boy from the Burg is always going to have an accurate insight to these kind of things!

When they were actually exchanging while only slightly tied up many times Joe did let them go, that's why Hatton himself commented that he was surprised at how well PBF was able to work on the inside, give himself space, etc.

Floyd does this to pretty much all his opponents: Analyze their style for 2-4 rounds. Then, neutralizes it.

It's friggin incredible. Even when he gets hit he doesn't get flustered, doesn't look upset, he just sticks to his gameplan.

I know the risk vs. reward isn't worth it for Floyd at this point, but I would love to see him fighter either Cotto or Paul Williams.......or both before eventually retiring for good.

Indeed, he approaches the first few rounds like a game of chess.

He has so much confidence in not getting hit with a big punch; for lesser fighters the idea of sacrificing the first few rounds just to pinpoint the opponents weaknesses would be too big a risk.

Floyd got his tactics spot on - some of the guys I was watching with were saying that PBF was showboating by keeping his guard down; he wasn't, he was keeping his arms down to keep Hatton away from the body shots, and it worked perfectly.

As he said:-

"A true champion adapts"

Ricky only really had a Plan A.
