Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift fell short of the million mark. Latest reported figured (March 31, 2009) had it a 670,000 units sold.
I always thought that a new Final Fantasy Tactics for 3DS was a lock, even more after the great reception Fire Emblem: Awakening had. But nowadays you can't expect anything from Square Enix.
I don't really get the people that are so down with the later chapters. Sure, can be a chore, but they are not game-breaking in any stretch..

"Respecting players time"? Seriously? The game's listed as 60 hours long on How Long To Beat, I can't even imagine trying to pick that up when the general consensus is "turns to shit halfway through". Good to know they're much shorter if you don't do optional stuff, I still don't think I can bear to play this though. JRPGs have a huge problem respecting players time and I can't ignore a red flag like that which I've heard from several people who played the game to completion.
What's the actual (rough) gametime breakdown? From the complaintsI assume basically everyone (or at least everyone who complained) went and did all the optional stuff. Is this optional as in "see an extra scene that's not especially plot relevant if you do it" or "actually unlock a significant set of items/jobs/plot explanation" optional?especially about the apparently optional boss rematches everyone hates because the strategy is the same
I'm not that big of a fan of the game, but knowing that a new IP JRPG sold that well is pretty nice.

The thing about Bravely Default is that even if you took out the garbage parts, it would still be a fairly middle-of-the-road jrpg. Two of the four main characters are boring, and the supporting cast is even worse (thanks for tagging along tiny rat guy, muscle oaf guy and "proprietoress." Why are you here again?). There also aren't many locations to visit and the dungeons are repetitive and uninspired.
The music and battle systems are great, so it has that going for it, but compared to the SNES and Playstation jrpg heavy hitters, Bravely Default comes up short.
Took my time with chapters 1-4, blasted through 5-7 in 90 minutes just doing the handful of compulsory temple battles, and then loved the final battle. Just epic.
I think the release of Bravely Second overseas is now secured. Well done !
Really loved the first 4 chapters + the two ends of the game. Hated the chapters 5 to 8 though.
For some of us these are the only things that matter.
Damn the game is that long/many chapters?? I'm on my way to the fire crystal with the shield bearers thinking I was like 2/3 through...
I'll never finish it then despite enjoying it so far haha
If you don't do the optional battles in the later chapters 2/3 is probably pretty close to where you're at.

If you set the encounter rate to 0 and rush through the game past that point only to discover you're underleveled for the final confrontations?
This game wouldnt have sold so much no doubt without nintendo's advertising. SQ owes them one.I still wonder how much of the western sales was because Nintendo stepped in to publish and advertise it. They worked magic with DQ9 as well. I bet if SE if was the one to publish this overseas, the results would have been less successful and not for the lack of trying. Nintendo just knows how to market their games and gave BD some substantial ad pushes that few companies, SE included, can replicate.
Yep, but I did find the story interesting. For some of us these are the only things that matter.

I remember the reviews generally being very positive?I still need to get this, reviews seem a bit mixed but its nice to see a success story. Hopefully the sequel is bigger and better.
Now I'm really intrigued - can someone tell in a way that doesn't spoil the story or similar important elements why the second half is considered bad? (Still, spoiler tag of course)
I always want to play those games, then I see the horrible character art and my desire melts away.

I almost bought it, based on the demo, but got away from that when I heard there was something that ruins the game later down the line.
Glad to see that it's doing well in the west. There is still a market for JRPG's in the west, just not the ones that they have been making in recent years.
Well, I agree with you. But I'll take anything in an era almost devoid of JRPGs. IMO we haven't had a genuinely good JPRG since Xenoblade Chronicles and Trails in the Sky.The thing about Bravely Default is that even if you took out the garbage parts, it would still be a fairly middle-of-the-road jrpg.
