Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes (infamous rom hack / fan sequel) has leaked

Fired it up to check if it worked. The music is enough to draw me in, even if the game opens exactly the same way as the "real" game.

Give it (half) an hour and you should see enough divergence to keep you interested.

Don't know why so many people are like AGAGAGAAGGA CHRONO TALKS *switch off*. Never seemed like a big deal to me, besides it's somewhat logical with there being no actual main character this time around. The game is solid and should appeal to fans with a strong interest in the series' background. Already about 15 hours in.

So is this the legit release (relatively speaking), or a glitchy (pre-)beta?

My understanding is that it's further advanced than the "98% beta", but not exactly the finished product, a 99% build if you will. I have personally only encountered one thing I thought was weird, though I can't tell if it was a bug or if I just stumbled upon unfinished content. It was non-gamebreaking and sidequest-related anyway. As for the rest the game plays just fine.

For those familiar with Flames of Eternity, this current build of CE is much more polished and balanced than the latest FoE build, however Giro stated that from now on he would use the latest CE version as a basis for future updates.

Also, the coliseum works and that's awesome.

I was under the impression Crimson Echoes was a direct sequel. It is literally the same as CT for the first thirty minutes? And what's "Flames of Eternity"?

Someone needs to play this thing and update us, stat.

Edit: Patched and run, but the game froze immediately when I tried to pick up the lunch on Crono's table. Not a good sign. = P

Alright so I've played this for a few hours and I have to say, it's actually not too shabby all things considered, at least so far.

Even though the story so far follows pretty closely from Chrono Trigger and is essentially a "fanfic" in that regard, it does manage to do some things well. First, it actually does an okay job realizing what the world in various time periods would actually be like 5 years after the first game, with NPCs and various writings giving a lot of background information as to what's going on and how the events of the first game have affected things going forward. Second, it follows the philosophy established in the first game, being that you're more or less free to explore around time and space at various points to check out new events and see how changes in the timeline (and believe me, there are some) affect the world around you.

As for the characters, you have the requisite OOC moments just by virtue of having people in their spare time doing the writing, but it's not too bad and each character is as you remember them. Yes, even the now nonmute Crono, where it seems the only reason they gave him any lines was to establish that he wasn't mute I guess. Given what many might have feared when giving Crono a voice, the hack makers have shown considerable restraint, at least so far.

As far as gameplay, well... it's Chrono Trigger. Weapon/Armor seems to have been redone, though I'm not far enough along to see if there are any real major changes to the game's balance. Skill system is the same, though everyone now starts with a set of skills and some magic from getgo, with some of the skills being replaced with new ones IIRC. The real change in the gameplay is with rebalanced enemy encounters, as expected, and it's not all good news. I'll say now that, so far, this hack completely avoids any super obnoxious fake difficulty BS that you see with some hardtype RPG hacks. Not that there aren't any weird balance issues, like an entire section where you play as one character through an entire dungeon. The enemies aren't really hard, but the encounters are numerous and they hit hard enough that you really have to be proactive in buying and using healing items to be able to survive. Once again, not obnoxious, but considering how early in the game this is and how broke you are (unless you cheat at the Casino like I did) you might get a bit frustrated.

Not much else to say until I get more into it, but seeing as the story is actually pretty competent so far and the gameplay is basically more Chrono Trigger, I'm certainly willing to play more and see where things go.

I think they have to. If not, you are going to see fan projects sprouting up left and right.
What's wrong with that? Better companies than SquareEnix allow this sort of thing as a matter of course.

Beat the game in about 30 hours. I'm truly impressed. Remember to watch the "credits" (most of them read "unused", eh) till the end, they pull a MGS after that.

Overall the hack felt a lot like the Chrono Compendium in game form, and I mean this in the best possible way. So much stuff regarding the background of the series in there, in addition to the original parts of the plot.

Regarding the writing I don't have much to say, few OOC as someone mentioned earlier in the thread indeed, most of what's there gets the job done and you have the occasional brilliant/badass/hilarious line so it's all right overall. Loved the exchange between
Magus and King Zeal
before the final battle, for example.

From the C & D letter:.

So they're in trouble now?

It was never going to be a lawsuit in the first place, even if it had been released when it was supposed to.

The C&D was either fake, or a single overzealous lawyer in Square's legal department.

Suing fans over fan works is counter intuitive. Especially when it's distributed purely over the internet at quite possibly an international scale.

About 10 hours in, its actually a very very good fanmade game. I was expecting re-used environements with new dialouge but they actually have created whole new sections, new timelines, new interesting minigames, spells, weapons etc...this is more like FFVI: part II than a lousy remake. The dialouge is quite good too, and the game is more grown up than CT.

If you ever had CT on your top-ten then this game is mandatory. Im really impressed and enjoying every minute of it.

And yes, the difficulty is ramped up quite much.

/Magus versus Daltons Golem
/Literally die multiple times due to cheap shit like massive lightning attack, half-life gravity orbs, and an explosion on death.
/Quit

Theres difficulty, then theres THAT.

Fans who've played the game say the characters are a little different than they remember (main character Crono, silent in the original, speaks, and a few of the dialects aren't quite right).

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
Thanks for the impressions. Planning on replaying CT when I turn 50, I'll be sure to play this next :)

I watched the playthrough uploaded to youtube (which was of the 98% version) back when the game first got C&Ded (the team felt that was the best way to represent thier work). While it suffers from the general ROM-hack stuff of "hmm this is familar...oh its that enemy/boss/technique" it seemed like a fairly neat hack. Also liked the final dungeon.
(Then again I like the mish-mash of everything final dungeons like FFV had)

Do Crono and Nadia die in this one? Arent they supposed to according to cannon?
Okay I'm going to spoil parts of the story how I remembered it during the playthrough I watched.
Nadia does die in 0AD and is the last human to do so in the reptile timeline. Since that timeline gets wiped that dopesn't happen (come to think of it, thats two games she dies in...as in the original she had the "you were never born" thing happen). The Chrono Cross "oh they died in the reistance against porre" is instead explained by they something like wormholes leading to other dimensions so Chrono and Nadia decide to go on adventure in those helping save those worlds from whatever evils. Somehow this satisfies the fans and the canon. Also Chrono Trigger DS changing the canon lead to a re-write of parts of the story (I never understood the appeal of Dalton).

I'd rather Chrono Resurrection gets leaked, demo or not, that shit looked hot.
I knew the cease and desist was coming with that one but man did it bum me out when it eventually happened. It looked so sweet.

Not to derail, but I just can't fathom why SE is so testy about fanmade sequels to this game when it essentially dumped the IP for no apparent reason.

As I've said before, I'll never understand how this is a big deal for some people.

Also, keep checking metronome project for updates to Flames of Eternity, there's also been talk of a version more in line with the original project.

It's my understanding that the owner of an IP is legally obligated to protect it. They aren't sending out C&Ds just for fun.

No. The law protects them regardless of their actions. They're simply making their intentions clear, bold, and underlined.

And really if you make a rom hack (or more generally any derivative work,) you should always expect legal recourse because you're willfully infringing. I think S-E's view is overzealous and antiquated on these matters of older IP, but they hold the power nonetheless.

Dat IPS! Unf.

They were dumb for C&Ding this in the first place. It only hurt them in the long run. It's a harmless patch for a ROM. I haven't seen Square-Enix do much with the Chrono series other than port it, even up to now with PSN (lol) having the PSX Chrono Trigger. Granted, the DS port is probably the best representation of the game, but as far as doing anything new? Forget it.

It says a lot when a game's fanbase is so very loyal and dedicated that they'd take the time to do a project like this, while the company that actually created it would rather just spew out a port every now and then.
