AND ELLIS TOO! WARREN ELLIS AND KELLY SUE WRITING TOGETHER!

rNg3HsX.png

It's a real shame this series is ending soon. I think the Bendis/Bagley opener with "look, it's Thanos from the after-credits scene in this summer's blockbuster movie Marvel's The Avengers!" killed a lot of interest in this book before KSD took over, and that's an uphill struggle that few books could successfully overcome. EDIT: Even when they're not getting stuck doing crossovers with the big events.

Hey Marvel! MAHVEL! Listen to me!

Just relaunch it. New title, new #1, with Kelly and Warren tag-teaming it on writing duties, with the same art team and the same less-than-serious, "this is how the Avengers behave when 'big apocalyptic sky-is-falling' things aren't happening" tone that makes this a perfect counterpoint to Hickman's "big things" books.

What book is that?

Single issues? First time I remember hearing you speak of buying single issues. Neat.

I haven't read much Remender. I'm one of these born-again comic readers. I think I've only read one issue of Uncanny Avengers and then Deadly Class #1. He's pretty narration heavy, which I often find boring. But I loved Deadly Class.

Hahah just digital Maq, but yea. I'm extremely torn on Remender as a writer right now. He has a hold of some characters I love, I've read some stuff by him that I liked and some I hated, and in particularly with these two books, he kicked off with stories I really didn't dig but have since been interested in the previews. Marvels trades are no joke. Not many issues for not the cheapest price so I don't want to put down and end up with books on my shelf I dislike haha. This happens once in awhile when I'm extremely indecisive about a writer haha. Last time I had to get issues to be sure it was.....Glory by Keatinge and Campbell as it happens haha, having been talking about that book a few pages back.

Just to blather on, I wasn't always trade only. When I was a kid, I read a lot of age of apocalypse and that whole Lobdell era of x-men by single issues, lots of spider-man from that time period too. When around 2005-6, I got back into comics, and I read the first year or so of Bru's run of Captain America in singles, immortal iron fist, Carey's first year on adjectiveless x-men. It was really just when I got my own place and I started to really take pride in my place and obviously as a result of living independently, tighting up the wallet everywhere I could to fund video games, going out and socialising and all the house bills etc. as well as comics, I finally made the jump to trade. I've never looked back in regret but occasionally if I'm super torn on a book that I don't want to feel stupid on a purchase, I jump on comixology or Marvel Unlimited and go for it haha.

And yea Maq, it's the narration thing that has totally killed me lately with his stuff. Lots of throwback narration in the Uncanny first arc just made it so dull for me. It was like really melodramatic prose laid over stuff I could clearly see just through the art :/

Would Supergirl fill the gap in my reading for a female superhero with suspect writing and nonsense storylines? Think Catwoman level.

ComicsGaf I'm having a dilemma and need your advice; I'm moving house soon and I'm toying with getting rid of a lot of my individual back issues and sticking to mostly trades. I tend not to have much time to read many back issues anymore and I havent found a nice way to store/display them (long boxes don't do them justice, they just hide them!).

I used to be a big fan of individual issues and I really disliked the idea of trades, in fact I used to actively avoid them. However, my trade collection has been growing slowly over the past few years, and I almost exclusively get individual issues or hardcovers. I'm really loving deluxe hardcover editions because they are great quality, look really nice on a shelf as part of a bigger collection and are a great way to get caught up on reading.

I think I'll probably want to keep up a main X-Men title or so because I don't think I could go without individual issues all together. Plus I hate being months behind in 'current events' in comics.

So my questions are; how do you store/display your single/back issues? Have any of you made the switch to trades and gotten rid of most of your back catalogue? If you have made the switch do you have any regrets and what are your views on the switch?

I have around 4 short boxes full of single issues, typically things that are sort of special like Fraction's Immortal Iron Fist, but i also rebuy them in some type of deluxe format if/when available because i don't reread single issues, i sort of hate them actually and only buy them to read a series and support it as it comes out. I love marvel digital codes that come with print issues so i have a digital copy to read of something that isn't worth buying a deluxe hardcover for and i can get rid the print issue. I don't regret getting rid of single issues as long as they weren't my absolute favorite stuff, i regret selling Morrison's Batman run :(

I forgot to post what I bought this week, better do it before the February OT goes up (which won't be for a while, so relax).

Marvel Comics
Avengers Assemble #23
Thor God of Thunder #18
Uncanny Avengers #16

DC Comics
Batman and Robin Annual #2

Image Comics
Black Science #1

Dark Horse Comics
Conan and the People of the Black Circle #4
Furious #1

Other Publishers
Li'l Sonja One-Shot (Dynamite)

Couldn't make it to the shop on Wednesday, with all the road/bridge closures and travel advisories.

I went to my shop today and they definitely have the Legion Archives 1-12. They also had the HC of Ordway's Power of Shazam and a TP of Mark Waid's Empire, so i'm glad that this place exists and is like 5 minutes away, basically

I've been in the mood for some big action team superhero stories so i looked for the Throne of Atlantis but the paperback isn't out til April. GG DC.

Home sick today and read a bunch of books. Finally checked out Y The Last Man #1. I've been resisting this series, but, wow, what a first issue. I definitely need to read this series.

Also read Planetary #1. I'm sure the series is as omgwtfbbq as you all say but the first issue is boring. Or maybe it's just not my thing.

Give Planetary another issue or two. If you're not hooked then it's definitely not for you.

Okay, polling for January's "Comic of the Month" is closed so no more PMs. I'll post the results along with the February OT tonight, provided I can finish the header before falling asleep.

I just want to say, thank you Spike, for the great work that you do. This voting business is fun! And it motivates me to keep up with my pull. *thumbs up*

Rat Queens

I read the first ish of Rat Queens just now because of ComicsGAF's hype and it was pretty decent fun! it helps that "team fantasy adventure" is one of my favorite kind of things. nice to read a #1 that actually made me want to keep reading, i feel like i've been reading a lot of "okay" ones lately. gonna pick up the rest of them whenever i go back.

Pull List Ranking Closed

Will post results in this thread in one hour.

Very interested in this.

I read Vol 1 of Aquaman and really liked what I read. People say they want Johns to do a creator owned series and I think this read about as close to a creator owned book as you could get from him. You could tell that there was an extra amount of care that went into the book. Can't wait to read vol 2 now.

Vol 3 is rad. I suggest you just keep going.

Read vol 1 of Batman and Robin tonight, going to read vol 2 tomorrow. Really enjoyed the book. Glad I finally got around to picking it up. Also picked up Brubaker's Captain America and Winter Soldier on the comixology sale. Don't really read much marvel except for Hawkeye, but I really love Brubaker's work on Fatale so I'm excited to read more of his stuff.

I forgot to submit my pull list but I'm happy to see Black Widow as #1, good job guys!

You all better support Edmondson's Punisher this month, or NotTheGuyYouKill will be furious (and me too!) :p

I stumbled upon Detective Comics - Batman #27 while shopping for a MIDI learning book at Barnes and Nobles. It is the first "special edition" issue I have ever bought, and it was fantastic. The stories were really neat and I really enjoyed the introspective look at Batman that some of them had.
It has definitely made me reconsider my position on purchasing more comics that aren't Spider Man, Adventure Time, and whatever else has a neat cover. Hell, I'm looking at Batman trades right now because of it, but I don't know where to start.
All in all, a good day.

Comics-GAF, I need your expert advice. I was given American Vampire Volume 1 (hardcover) for Christmas and absolutely loved it, so much so that I immediately bought Volume 2, 4 and 5 in hardcover. I did not know at the time that Volume 3 (hardcover) was out of print and have not seen a copy for less than $100 AUD. What are the chances of DC reprinting American Vampire Volume 3 (hardcover)? Volumes 1, 2, 4 and 5 seem to be readily available for immediate purchase and re-order. I don't understand why this isn't the case for Volume 3. If it's unlikely, I'll just bite the bullet and fork over the $100.

Ennis and Parlov are gonna knock that outta the water whenever their Punisher comic comes out tho

Ennis is good, but the new series is hitting the right beats going by the interviews. Frank in California, away from all the big-time villains he can't kill, even more tactically smart, Gerrads' beautiful artwork, and exploring more of the Frank who was once was a normal person. Plus Cole-Alves could potentially return so I am a happy person.

So based on the ridiculous hype here I read Deadly Class #1. It was aight. I liked the action sequences but the story really wasn't doing much for me. I do have a question: Why did the girl
freak out after killing a dude a few panels after she put a foot through a windshield into a dudes face? I mean, that dude is probably dead too. And she is a trained Assassin???

Paper quality is pretty poor. Do creator's choose that? The cover especially feels like something you'd get from a local indie title. Do not like that at all.

I'll check out another issue or two.

Please don't fork out the 100 dollars. It will come back.

I take it your a fan of the activity then man? Such a great book.

Ales Kot discussing his favourite spies in the MU. This fucking guy. Why is this not the roster for his secret avengers book haha? I literally love the way Kot speaks, I can't get enough of his interviews and stuff.

Barnes, Fury, Mystique, Black Widow, & the chameleon.
I would read. Also Kot has his sights set on Bucky, just a matter of when.

I'd rather not if it's reprinted, but I'm happy to hold out for now though. I'm not familiar with Vertigo's publication history. Do they often reprint trades such as this, in hardcover format?

They do, but DC being DC, it could be slooooow. Keep a really consistent eye out on ebay, someone oblivious will put it up eventually for a good price.

Yeah they do reprints. Hopefully it's soon considering the others are widely available.

Enjoyed the third issue of Black Science. It's probably the indie book I am enjoying the most but I really hope it doesn't get bogged down in one dimension for too many issues. I really feel like it'd be best served being very snappy, jumping one to the next, anthology style. We're going to have been in the Aztec dimension for three of four issues now.

Anybody here reading East of West? How is it? I am not a big fan of western when it comes to movies, but I really enjoyed The Dark Tower (the novels, haven't read the comics yet) for example so it sounds kind of interesting.

I like to support issues when they come out, and my local comic shop too. Having said that, the increase in trades seems to have been a good thing for comic shops and not the threat some thought it would be about 10 years ago. I think i'm going to streamline my collection and just keep the singles of the things I treasure and keep that part of my collection special rather than having stuff I liked the art in or whatever reason I bought it for. I'm not overly fussed on what i get for them cash wise because I have got my fun out of them already, but any new money will go towards trades and/or Hot Toys (my other weakness).

Man Guardians may have just lost me.

This xmen arc feels so contrived. Gladiator also seems reallly out of character especially since hes battle buddies with the avengers now.

Seems like Bendis was like "yeah i can tie these books together" and just shit it out.

It'd be cool if we actually got some characterization in the book.
Bendis writing someone completely out of character? Well I never.
