The Giant Bomb vid has restored some of my interest, but I still am a little unsure about the combat.

Also not sure I want to go down the MMO rabbit hole again.

This seems like the early mmo stages where you have basic attacks and 1 or 2 abilities. I expect my sanity to unravel as they reveal more and more ways to make combat fun and varied.

in stike theres a lot more variety, the hive wizzard will poison areas on the ground and spawn exploding enemies, the fallen have invisible characters that will deciimate you with snipers are need to be taken out fast since they'll down you in 2 hits and if you lose track of them they'll tear you apart. It's a good mix, and the boss fights require team work, like needing a person to take out the cannon fodder. I did the strike on the highest setting and even with my level 8 hunter with the best weapons I can find, I've died several times.

The game still feels a lot like halo but they made the right changes to make the game feel unique and different.

Yup. I have a ton of fun with the Strike. I see myself playing those a lot. When you play it on Legend it's insane. Tough as hell but fun. I can't wait to play it on even harder difficulties though. That's how much fun I had playing the strike. In fact I think I'll play it again tonight.

Oh BTW for those worried about microtransactions. There are none right now. Where Bungie is going to make money is going to be the DLC be they maps for Crucible, expansions, etc. That's where they're going to get their money from. Course who knows what the future has in store. The game really truly though isn't set up to microtransaction you to death like they easily could have. I really like that they did not go that route.

GOOD, GOOD.

Even if the multiplayer doesn't match Halos awesomeness, keep in mind how entangled it is into the campaign. Most "mmo" type games have pvp with wretched combat but they're still fun as hell to play because of the character customization/consistency.

Do you feel like there's anything missing from the combat? A lot of folks who have (and haven't) played it have voiced some concerns about the action in Destiny. Like, it's not bad, but it's not unique either. How do you feel about it? Is the class-building and magic stuff enough to differentiate Destiny's combat engine from other shooters?
I said this before, but I think the gameplay feedback could use another pass. Some of the bigger enemies, like Fallen Tanks or Sepiks Prime, while fun to fight against, feel too much like bullet sponges at times. I really like exaggerated feedback – I want to be able to tell how close I am to killing an enemy without a healthbar – and I feel Destiny's could be ramped up a bit more. Though you need to know certain stuff – like how high an enemy is – because their level may be too high for weapons to have any effect.

The healthbars can get annoying sometimes, seeing as how there can be many enemies on the screen.
The cube voice / character- after some time with him did he become likeable / charming?
I can see people's complaints about the VA, but it's...okay. I think it grows on you. He doesn't seem to be phoning it in, more going for something very specific at times. It's hard to explain.
What , if any, are the mechanisms in there to avoid horrible trolls? I love the idea of getting deep into something with a social aspect, but I don't want to be turning my mic on to be getting sexist / dumb teenage boy aggro from some anonymous warlord.
When you go off into a Strike or a Story mission, or when you go into certain parts of Old Russia, you get isolated from everyone else so that only you and your team can participate. You can tell when it's happening. It's a really smooth transition.
Do you think there is / will be scope for detailed teamwork - a bit like high level raids in WoW?
Never played WoW, so can't answer. What do you mean?

Yup. I love just riding around Old Russia. Also I want to let folks know we're being honest. The game isn't perfect. I've mentioned some of my nitpicks with some of the Bungie guys. I'll list those here.

I would like to see more AI in the open world. I don't think that's possible though sadly. I'd also like to see the classes play a bit more differently. That's improved a lot since pre-alpha and you can see a difference there in the Alpha too. I feel the enemies in explore probably do need some more health because yea they do go down a bit too easy I feel. I feel that in Crucible it should try to put everyone on a team into a voice channel because as it is now it doesn't. So yea there are some issues. I think Bungie though will fix those that they can and make changes in future Destiny games to the ones they can't change now.

one of my big issues with exploring old russia is that the zones don't feel designed for specific levels. I know that its because they dont want places to be empty, but you'll see level 11 enemies and level 4 enemies in the same location. Theres a lot of spaces designated for DLC that are in areas with weaker enemies, but it's somewhat jarring. I think this will be resolved in the full game with the planets being designed more for higher levels, but it's still a bit strange.

Oh one more thing. I've had to hold my tongue for a long while on this. The speculated force push someone saw a warlock do. That's our melee. It will melt a face if you get too damn close lol. Each class has a unique look to their melees. Hunters use a knife, Titans punch, and Warlock's do this magic like punch thing. It's really cool.

Well I think part of that is done to keep us out of certain areas at the moment. I managed to get pretty far up in one around the Forgotten Shore and I could see some graphical glitches and a lower level of decorating. So I think those are areas that they are probably working on. If that doesn't change though then yea I would have to agree.

I've seen that video of the control schemes (thanks FyreWulff) and I don't like any of them. Jumper is the closest one to BJ, and it still is nowhere near perfect.

Please Bungie, add a classic control scheme. At least a classic Bumper Jumper option. Basically like this:

LS: Crouch
RS: ADS
L2: Grenade
L1: Jump
R2: Shoot
R1: Melee
Triangle: Switch Weapon
Circle: Action/Reload
Cross: Sprint
Square: Ability

Please Bungie.

Thanks for the impressions, folks. I'm pretty excited to play myself on Thursday whenever the general population code drop happens (or hey, you know...if generosity strikes).

The MP stuff is all really interesting to me. I kind of know what to expect out of the PvE environment, great Bungie AI with great Bungie combat that I've spent hundreds of hours with already. But their new multiplayer philosophies? I don't know if I'm all that excited for what it actually is, but I am pretty excited for them to do something that isn't bound by my expectations of a Halo game - they can go off-the-rails entirely and there's real justification for doing so. I knew exactly what I wanted out of Halo, and any deviation from that was pretty easily met with a comparison to my ideal. With something new, that doesn't exist - there's new context for everything, which is a really cool place to be in as a fan.

Unfortunately I can't watch anything until I'm out of the office, but I'm glad the embargo lifted for sure.
Yeah. There are some areas of Old Russia I've yet to explore because the enemies occupying the area are too high of a level. Makes me want to go back for more.
Do you happen to know if there's a level cap in place for the alpha, by any chance? I wonder how far they'll let people get in the character progression.

How is the world structured? Are the planets divided into different segments that you have to progress through as you level up? Like, do you start on Earth and then you reach a high enough level to be able to travel to the Moon? Or can you visit any planet at any level?

Or you can explofe. This is what I did and in doing so met up with other players. None of us were in a party , but i saw them fighting enemies and I invited myself to join.

When you run into someone you CAN invite them to join your Fireteam or you can kill some guys with them and go about your business. I went about my business for the most part .

How does loot and xp work for this scenario? If you're just out in the wild and you see someone else shooting a bad guy and you go and put a couple bullets in the same bad guy what happens? Split xp? You each get your own loot? Does the first person "tag" the enemy as theirs and you just help them if you want but they get all the rewards?

I think I might be in the minority on the VA - it might not sound cheerful but it does sound like a character with a distinct personality, which is more important to me.

I've never played it either - only watched a friend stream it - but the gigantic bosses require a degree of coordination and pre-planning in order to be successful. That kind of depth in encounters really appeals to me.

Thanks for all your thoughts so far :) Really looking forward to Destiny and giving it a go, of course that means I won't get an alpha code. :p

yeah.

To add to that, the melee and grenades are very much spells in their own right. It's a very nice system when you consider it as such. Grenades as well, at different levels they have different abilities, you may even chose to keep a lower level version of your grenade because you like the result more then than the higher level. Some grenades are great for zoning spaces (the level 2 hunter grenade for example or the warlock dot grenade), other have additional effects, like the titan's does a blind/cc effect on enemies.

You know I'll be honest. I was very worried going in. I'd read the rumors everyone else had. I was worried it would feel way too alien. I'm the type of guy that sticks to team slayer. I actually found myself enjoying the mode they have and the gameplay. Even when I was getting my ass kicked which was a lot I was enjoying myself. I don't see this game being an everyone wins type game multiplayer wise. The better players will without a doubt destroy us folks who aren't uber. There is a clear method to the madness is the best way I can put it.

Watching the Unfinished on Giantbomb, and I am seriously in LOVE with this game. I could sink hours and hours into this game. Coming from being a big WoW player, this has similar traits that I enjoy.

Cant wait till beta, and if I get the Alpha invite :O

Thanks breh. I'm pretty proud of that first Porno for Pyros album (esp. 'Sadness'). Somebody should cover that song.

But Ritual de lo Habitual. I've never quite reached the hights again that I reached there on Three Days and Then She Did.

I'm not a breh, buddy.

But yes, I'm afraid I've got to agree. You've got a great body of work though. Don't feel down. Believe in yourself!

<and that's the last I can say because I don't want to derail the thread>

Character Customization, is it deep? Weapon skins, armors ect?

Also, I know nothing of this game. Is this an MMO?

Yup. That's why I find it hard to really call them grenades. Thanks to the talent system you can really change how "grenades" work. For example Warlock can hurl one decent ball like sized one out that lingers and does damage. If we upgrade however we can throw out one that splits into 3 of them to do more area damage. So they really aren't grenades even though they function like them. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the impressions Dax.

I'm really hoping to get in, I registered on the website, but I don't know if people have already got their replies.

Got Dax and Fyre impressions, need Ghal, Havok, nullpointer and fudsch to round out the HaloGAF refugees' opinion poll.

Giantbomb video made the game look dreadfully boring. Fyre's vids were a bit better.

extremely deep from what I've seen from vendors.

At level 20 you can purchase armor shaders to let you customize the colour of your armor, weapons have unique upgrade trees with different scopes that offer different advantages, like faster reloadingg or less recoil, ships and strike have different variations with the same stats, theres a nice mix of character customization in character creation from normal tones to bright pink, blue and orange, you can make a character look like a japanese pop star or make them look like someone walking down the street.

Character building at the start, collect loot for all the stuff later. It may as well be an MMO, it has all the hallmarks.

It's not super deep. You can pick from a couple heads, then a couple different hair styles and features. Then you can customize colors. That's pretty much it. This is not an mmo. It's more a quasi MMO. You never see more then about 12 to 16 players at a time in any area. However it will fill in players in an area when others leave. So it's like an always on match making. In each map you have what are called public spaces and then private spaces.

Take the strike. When you start you start in a public space. You can see other players and interact. You can do a public event if it pops up. However once you get to a certain point the other players fade away and you're on your own. Just you and your fireteam members. So it almost feels like one but it very much isn't.

If you want to better succeed and kick ass in Strike and Story missions, teamwork is definitely needed. Free-roam not so much cause you're exploring!

Seeing The Crucible menu just now and plenty of the Tower (not to mention lots of the actual FPS & Exploring earlier)... it looks like a classic in the making here.

Everyone should just take an hour off and enjoy the GiantBomb video: http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/unfinished-destiny-06-06-2014/2300-8971/

Can you turn off numbers that come up for hits? Really hope so I feel it kills the immersion.

No you can't. You really end up not noticing them after awhile. I myself would like to see them gone but once it was explained why they have them I understand. But yea they're there to stay. Keep in mind though that's based off current build. Now down the road Bungie could change their minds and allow you to choose or take them away. As it is right now though that's pretty set in stone though it seems.

I'm watching Ninja, and I've noticed when he's using the sniper the reticle stays completely bloomed all the time.

Does that mean what I think it means? Does the game force you to use the scope for accuracy? Or am I wrong, and you can still no-scope like in Halo?

Hey dude. Sorry if I gave you the wrong idea. I remember seeing a control scheme that was close to Bumper Jumper. Didn't know you were looking for that specific type.
Don't worry, if you don't use Bumper Jumper it's undestandable you didn't notice. Thanks again.

you can no-scope, I was playing the smaller pvp map and forgot to load up my shotgun so I ended up defendiing a point with my sniper rifle and got a couple no-scope kills.
