Discord is nuking Nintendo Switch emulator devs and their entire servers

Discord has shut down the Discord servers for the Nintendo Switch emulators Suyu and Sudachi and has completely disabled their lead developers’ accounts — and the company isn’t answering our questions about why it went that far. Both Suyu and Sudachi began as forks of Yuzu, the emulator that Nintendo sued out of existence on March 4th.

“Discord responds to and complies with all legal and valid Digital Millennium Copyright Act requests. In this instance, there was also a court ordered injunction for the takedown of these materials, and we took action in a manner consistent with the court order,” reads part of a statement from Discord director of product communications Kellyn Slone to The Verge.

If they were sharing roms or something, fair enough. But if it was just a discord for developing the emulator, then fuck that.

Discord is crap anyway.

It's like a stream of ADHD disconnected out of sync thoughts from gays flooding a chat log. Anything you type will be lost in a sea of shit text (unless you say something controversial). Everyone has the same 'reddit' writing style and stupid bios.

I miss forums being the main go to.

You think they don't know about the creepeness and lurkers on Discord servers. Smogon is the same way, people were discussing roms(by accident) before games were launched. Of course they distribute all the illegal stuff on there, they probably think its a land without law.

Not just discord, social media in general effectively killed forums. Now these social media posts are flooded with porn bots. I feel so disconnected when I look through the comments. Nothing is ever moderated anymore.

I mostly use it for friends, sharing learning resources and school (shockingly, the best way) so I guess it really depends on what your expectations are. But I barely see it as any different than Skype, at least you know, before they started putting malware in it.

Listen, i dont like discord either, but isnt the content exactly as good as the groups that you join and engage with? Which leads to ask: what kind of weird discord groups do you guys partake in

My problem with Discord are the ability to make close community and without even moderations to control what is discussed or send.

So we have a person that did a closed Discord group and sell rom/emulator for a good amount of money. And we have stupid people over Twitter whining about gaming forums like neoGAF, but unlike the Discord here in neoGAF you don't necessary need to create an account to see what we are discussion.

Look at the conversation we are having right now. People can just enter on neoGAF without an account and read every bit of word. And we aren't even talking about the dark stuff some resetera users was discussing over Discord. You must have missed that. I suggest you to use the search button and read more about. If I remember right, even one of the resetera users came here to defend himself from the accusation.

Back when the projects were announced I made two premonitions, that Nuzu had zero credibility because it was set up by a teenager who didn't even know how to use Git (and that was the first fork to disappear) and that the one setting up Suyu looked to be an attention wh*re just wanting to recruit people to work for him. Not sure if "bus" is "Crimson Hawk" but that project looked to be going that direction. We developers have worked in enough toxic environments to notice when projects are bound to degenerate.

I don't participate on Discord lol
During the time of Pokemon leaks(leaks and rumors is the best part of pokemon nowadays for me), I usually scroll through reddit and smogon to see if anyone find any new info(I'm not a member of those either).
When I scrolled through one of the discussions, one of their stupid members literally mention that they "pick up the rom first on discord because thats how their test team test new stuff before anything". One of members even scold him, because apparently people aren't supposed to know about this(you can check their forums, they use emulators and cheats to test game mechanics). I even think one of the mods deleted the message.

So in resume, they distribute roms on discord as soon as they find on internet. Since Discords are safe closed groups, theres no way people can find out unless you're from inside.

If this is how you're using discord, you're using it wrong. Discord is best used for somewhere around 3 to 20 friends to create a group and be able to stay in contact with each other. You can play cross-play games together, watch videos together, chat like an old ICQ channel, share memes and other images. It's honestly great.

The only reason to visit a larger discord server is to see official PR announcements from companies or games you enjoy, and you can mostly find that sort of thing on Twitter instead. Anything else on a large server is exactly like you described above.

Sharing ROMs on Discord was exactly why Yuzu got screwed in the first place, so more than likely these guys were doing the same.

Just really annoying I still see youtubers defend Tropical Haze and straight up say they weren't sharing ROMs.

Never heard of signal and I've never seen telegram myself, don't even know what it looks like lol And how would you even use that on PC? Not everyone want to have to use a phone for this, that would completely remove the practical aspect of discord. Sounds like you have a completely different usage than what most people have with discord on their PC.

Signal has a desktop app. His point was their usage was stupid for Discord, while most people are just chatting about stuff.

I used it because it was the only ’community’ for a couple of old online games that have resurrected servers through fan efforts.

The is no forum or anything on their sites and they point everything to discord. So I joined and of the 3 or 4 games the discord servers were the same shit interchangeable.

One had some trans person writing huge daily rants about how their job doesn’t appreciate them and their workplace is full of bigots. Nobody ever replied to them but they kept this weird diary posting going everyday.

Others were just random unrelated things like giving their opinions on Pokémon IV values for breeding (none of the games are Pokémon related).

Then I asked a question about the emulator network settings and had a response, only for a resident know-everything to respond to them ACKSHUALLY and then they spent a couple messages arguing over who knows the most.

If you reply to someone, your reply will get buried under the stream of noise. The quoting system is awful so it’s impossible. You basically have to privately talk to them, defeating the point of the community part.

After the settlement, Nintendo owns some of Yuzu assets. Could Discord just banned these channels from possible suit from Nintendo.

Edit: Ryujinx isn't affected.
