Dolphin 4.0 Released

EatChildren

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I've settled on using OpenGL backend with 3x Native internal rendering and 16xQ CSAA. So far it seems like the nicest balance between performance and image/audio quality, and I could reduce either the internal rendering or the AA to speed thing sup a bit. OpenGL isn't perfect, I think it's producing some slight double-up ghosting on distant objects due to bloom (though it's not bad). But that 16xQ AA cleans up the image extremely well and introduces none of the colour fuckery that SSAA under DX9 does.

EatChildren, this is porn. Stop it.

Don't you dare stop it !

I couldn't stop if I wanted to.

So I checked out Super Mario Sunshine, and besides the bubbles looking weird (and the one problem that must be fixed by using JITIL) it works pretty great. It was really nice being able to get back to it after so long.

I haven't checked, but I doubt Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 are perfect now though. I run on an Intel i5 2500k at 3.5(?) Ghz, with a giant third party fan I bought for OC'ing but I chickened out at about 4.3-4.4 Ghz trying to get SMG1/2 to work PERFECTLY. A lot of places are all right, but I don't like wading through slowdown so... Has anyone checked performance with my CPU I think it's pretty common (it sucks though that Intel seems pretty much completely necessary)? I'm wondering also if anyone with some really beefy new CPUs can report their experience with these powerhogs. If their is a CPU that exists that can do it without OC'ing I would be more ok with considering another full PC upgrade. "Super Mario Galaxy" = Dolphin Emulator's "Crysis".

I just hope 4.0 fixed my issue with controller support.
Dont know what the issue was but setting up the controllers was always a pain and only worked half of the time.
It wasn't even a lack of knowing what to do. One time I set up 4 player Brawl with 4 360 remotes with ease, the next time it was hell on earth trying to get it to work.

Run SMG2 in DirectX9 and your 2500k will run SMG2 just fine. I can play SMG2 at deadlocked 60fps with a 2500k OC"d to 4.5GHz at 1080p with highest AA and AF.

Sorry, I probably should have specifically said I chickened out of OC'ing entirely at that point. It actually began having some issues booting I believe.

Hm. The IR for my Wiimote doesn't seem to want to work in Dolphin, but it works fine on my Wii U. Anyone else having similar problems?

The lighting here is godlike.

SS is such a beautiful game. Playing it again on Dolphin is like playing it for the first time. I just wish some of the textures were better. Which brings me to my next topic:

I know there's a few of you that are familiar with making HD textures. Well, I've been dumping textures and resizing them applying filters and the like, but then when I try to load them, nothing. Is this not the right way? Should I rip them directly from the ISO? If so, what's the best way to go about that?

I did successfully make a texture for Link's face. It worked in a 3.x version of Dolphin, but when I upgraded to 4.0 it won't load anymore. Any ideas?

I REALLY want to get this HD texture project going, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Question for people who used the old and new one. Is performance better or worse for the games? Specifically Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Smash Brawl, Mario Kart, and Galaxy?

Also, and maybe more importantly, how's the online for Super Smash Brothers Brawl?

Figured this out. I guess the Wii U doesn't power the sensor bar if no Wiimote is synced (unless you go into vWii mode)?

Waverace 64 now works perfectly (as far as I can tell)

With a little bit of SweetFx CRT shader it's now the best looking emulated version you can play..weird, an emulator running an emulation:

He must be running a Project64 or Mupen64 Wii version on the emulator, like that pic of someone playin Pokémon Emerald on a GBA emulator for PSP on the PPSSPP emulator. You're better off using the PC native emulators.

Nah, you can inject N64 games into the Legend of Zelda collectors edition disk so that it'll use Nintendo's handmade N64 emulator on Gamecube.

It's what I used so that I could play Super Mario 64 in 3D in Dolphin.

Am I alone to think this is wrong?

I mean, it's ok if you love it like this, but I use filters like this mostly for retro game that can't upscaled like the NES,SNES,GEN and the likes.

EDIT: Nope, not alone. :lol

Another good thing for PC gaming that emulation continues to improve. I don't like console exclusivity.

This does count as PC gaming... right?

I'd like to reach a day when all emulators become perfected. Perhaps I haven't been looking in the right places and don't have the right version of the right emulator, but Keio Flying Squadron still gives me problems in emulation. Giving me the need to still use my Japanese SEGA Saturn.

And those Skyward Sword screenshots are truly beautiful.
It makes me wonder what my HD 7870 and Intel 2500K can handle together.

If I can't handle something like that on my HD 7870 and Intel 2500K PC, it might be time to look into upgrading yet again.

Dolphin is giving me a rough time:

i3-2100
GTX 560Ti
4GB RAM

I have tried to emulate with no bells and whistles whatsoever. I even stuck with the native resolution. Well, games run like crap at around 10 FPS.

I have perfectly emulated Bloody Roar on Dolphin 3.5 and now it stutters like hell. Same for Monkey Ball and Metroid Prime.
edit: huh, 3.5 has started being crap too all of a sudden.

Feels more like your computer is on the frizz than Dolphin now doesn't it? I know a few updates(the last 3 to win8) Messed with my dual OS setup. Mostly because I just create virtual drives on the same HDD and have my OS' share the space in a non-dynamic setting.

Don't ask me why I roll that way....I just do.

Guess I'll ask again. Can anyone tell me if this new one is better than the old for any games? (I did try both, but the settings are so complex in this emulator and the results are largely similar)

Specs:
i7 3770k
670 GTX
16GB DDR3

They're all stock speeds. I tend to get a lot of crackling and sound issues in both versions. Games almost always hover near 60, but never quite stay there. During regular gameplay if I had to guess by watching the counter, I am around 56-60 fps with it usually around 58-60.

Is there anything I can do with the settings, without overclocking, to hold 60 and have no sound problems?

Something i was wondering, maybe someone her or eatchildren which seems very active could answer:

Can you for the Nvidia driver solution that implements ambient occlusion to these games?
I read, i think it was in another dolphin thread, that there is some sort of modified version of the game withouth Fi interruptions and faster text. Can you play that on a normal Wii or just in dolphin? And exactly how do you acomplish that?

I think i want to start using dolphin. All my Wii games look like absolute pixelated shit on my monitor.

should the same be true for Galaxy 1? I couldn't play it, it kept stuttering badly and the audio was messed up. i5-3470k at 4GHz, AMD 7950

I never got into the emulation scene since I didn't think I could run any decent emulators on my Mac. It looks like I could with relative ease, though so I'll tinker with this tonight.

Question though: is there a way to rip your games without needing the Homebrew channel installed?

You can do it on a normal wii if it's modded.

It's just a gecko code that you enable, kind of like Action Replay if you ever messed around with that stuff.

Woah, wait a sec. I can for example be playing the original game and use a gecko code? Please someone tell me how.

Oh lawd my games look beautiful on Dolphin, too bad i only get 10FPS on my current PC. I can't wait to finish my build so i can play them with a decent FPS.

Too dark, man, too dark.

That's not me, for some reason the virtual release that this is emulating is very dark without any filters as well, I don't know whether that's how it's meant to be or it's a Dolphin emulation fault, and seeing as there is no way to alter brightness & gamma settings within Dolphin, I figured I'd do it with SweetFx.

I have fixed it now by boosting the SweetFx Brightness & Gamma settings and looks much more like how I remember it.

But I am the type that can't stand any filters.

Yes, I am well aware that filter usage like this is seen as heresy in some retro gaming circles, it's just old style 3D looks terribly dull, flat and washed out on modern LCD's.

How are you guys making it possible to play Zelda SS with xbox360 controller on Dolphin 4.0.

I cant get pass the screen where you need to insert motion plus in Zelda SS.

I think a lot of them are using a blutooth USB adaptor to hook up a real Wii controller...either that or there's a build of Dolphin that will allow you to bypass using motion plus??

Catching up on a few things.

- I'm not using a 360 pad, even though I hear there's some modifications that let you (I could be wrong). I like the motion controls, so I'm using the Skyward Sword limited edition Wii Remote with MotionPlus already built in. Overall responsiveness is fine. Skyward Sword uses the two gyros for pointing, not the sensor bar, so you only need the sensor bar for initial calibration and any recalibration. Downside is that M+ will occasionally lose calibration and go funky, especially when trying to control the beetle, requiring recalibration.

- I'm running an i5 2500K @ 4.3GHz, GTX 670 2GB, and 8GB DDR3. Performance is not perfect, but overall quite good and certainly playable at 1920x1080. I'm using HLE emulation for audio.

- Of the available backends, OpenGL is definitely the best, for me anyway. DX11 has issues and isn't worth using at all. DX9 looks great, is the fastest, but cannot use SSAA without botching up the colours a bit and bloom. OpenGL is a little slower than DX9, but still very fast, and allows you to use various tiers of AA without impacting colours and bloom.

Quite an impeccable inuition: my CPU fan was de-clipsed. I still wonder how the BIOS allowed to boot at all. Wind Waker runs perfectly. F-Zero, not so much.

Now that the nightmare has ended on my end, do you think I can venture into SS with the almost same experience you had with my rig ?

I think it's those codes http://geckocodes.org/?c=SOUE01
They also allow you to turn off the stupid notifications after picking up collectables.
Thanks for the link czk. I managed to get text instant text skip which changes the pacing quite a bit for the better. No shield and stamina bars also to clean up the HUD and related to this no big ass dowsing circle, looks better and makes the action more involving.

I haven't done the Fi one because it says it messes the game and should only be activated before a dungeon. And the treasure notification skip doesnt seem to be working because im getting the messages XD

Im looking forward a code that removes the altimeter when riding the better which isn't necesary at all and is the ugliest HUD in the entire game, when using pro mode that is.

No idea man. Maybe! Reducing the AA would improve performance for you.

So is 16xQ aa not supported on Ati cards?

Not sure, but that AA setting is only available if using the OpenGL backend.
