Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

WOW....are you using the latest version of DolphinVR by 2EyeGuy? If so I have a few questions....

Can you describe what the sense of speed is like? How is the sense of depth and overall feeling of "being there"? Does it feel like you're actually *IN* the world, sitting in the cockpit of the ship? Does the track and the objects feel life-size?

I'd probably have thrown up multiple times over.

Sorry for the slow reply here. I was blown away by the sense of scale with it. I didn't anticipate Gamecube games having a similar effect as something that was made for VR, but they certainly do. I did not try the hood cam, but the default view provided an excellent sensation. On the casino track in particular, the massive size of the large male statue is very evident.

I believe I'm using the most up to date version of Dolphin VR 4.0; the performance was rock-solid at 4x native with some other filtering. There are some GUI glitches in the menu of the game where the 3-d ships and characters in the craft select and setup hover over the wrong spot or out of standard alignment, but I didn't really tinker around with any of the settings people may have which could alleviate some of these.

You should absolutely try the first-person cam. I haven't tried F-Zero in VR, but I have in cross-eye stereoscopic 3D, and the first-person viewpoint changes everything.
F-Zero is gonna be one of the first things I try when I get a VR headset.

Did anyone ever get a decent mouse/keyboard config going for Timesplitters 2? If using the default Axis +/- settings for the mouse then you get that "bounce" back to the center. Another forum suggested using Cursor +/- instead but that has a different problem where the input is continuous, like I move the mouse to the left and it will just turn left forever until I move it back to its original place. Surely I can't be the only one who wants to get this working (especially after the perfect implementation created in 1964 for Goldeneye/Perfect Dark)

Wow that seems great. Have you tried Metroid Prime on it? Can you confirm if the head tracking issue with the helmet has been fixed? Does Samus' helmet and HUD move with you head movement now?

Alright, what exactly am I doing wrong here? Just got a beefy PC and wanted to see how Paper Mario TTYD looked in HD, but every time I load up the game, it's like none of the settings have changed and staying in 480p.

Is there a specific box I have to check? (besides internal resolution)

So while the game is running: "Graphics" button on the tool bar -> Enhancements -> turning up "Internal Resolution" isn't changing anything?

Just to be sure. You aren't running the game in windowed mode and keeping the window the default size are you?

huh, yeah it worked. I expected to see a bigger difference. Appreciate it.

Edit: To be fair, you can really tell the difference in-game as opposed to the main menu.

Isn't Paper Mario lots of 2D based sprites? Changing the rendering resolution won't do much besides showing the sprites at their maximum saved resolution, as opposed to polygons who benefit a lot from higher res and AA.

Considering how Mario Rotates in 3d and flips when you change direction I would think it's a texture on a flat polygonal surface.

Thank you so much for the reply MizzouRah. Wow that is very exciting to hear! I can't wait to try this out. Hopefully the availability of the Rift improves over the next few months.

Yes, I think you're right. There are deformation effects applied to the characters as well, such as when they get rolled up into a tube.

Ya, after trying out DolphinVR it's indeed amazing. Windwaker and Xenoblade Chronicles are absolutely insane in VR. With the Vive it's even better since I can get up and look around the scene(Paper Mario is even better for this since it feels like you're watching a doll house play). When 2EyeGuy adds in support for the Vive Controllers, playing games like Metroid Prime 3(or even better, Trilogy if that ever gets playable) will be unreal.

Wow, impressions sound great. I cannot wait to replay F-Zero GX and Metroid Prime in VR. Do you guys have links to the recommended builds I should use?

We are almost to 5.0 and should be seeing a release candidate any day now. Then a flurry of developer versions after 5.0 as the backlog gets of pull requests get released.

For those doing Dolphin VR, Animal Crossing really took my breath away. It looks like a little doll house diorama. There is world pop-in on the borders, but even still it is really, really cool to have this god view perspective looking down on the village.

Just upgraded to Windows 10 and the DX12 performance boost is pretty fantastic (it has been a year or more since I tried a new build of Dolphin, so I'm sure that helped too).

Just played the Training Mode for F-Zero GX and it seemed flawless (to my eyes, wouldn't surprise me if there was something I'm just not sensitive to) when before it would have pretty frequent slowdown. I'll have to try an actual race soon, hopefully it doesn't bog down with so many racers on screen. The analog stick for the Steam controller seems a little sensitive compared to the Gamecube's, but I have the Wii U USB adapter so I can use an actual Gamecube controller if I want now too!

Can't wait to try out Mario Galaxy with my Steam controller, should be able to get a good config with it.

This is not really how it works. As soon as game does scaling and rotations there is a visible impact on the result. Paper Mario, on the other hand, uses 3d rotations of planes all the time, so it's even more visible.

Besides you can always go and upscale the textures if that's your thing...

Upscaling the textures works only to a small degree though, at one point you're at max resolution of the file and a bigger IR won't do anything. That's where high res texture packs come in.

Having just finished the Zelda Twilight Princess HD remake on Wii U, decided I had to jump back in and replay Skyward Sword.

Just trying to remember though;

- was this only ever 30fps on Dolphin? Can't remember if it was 60 or 30fps last time I tried it.

- was there always an audio scratch? My sister keeps the disc in a CD wallet and it's double stacked so my disc is scratched to shit. Wondering if that is because the disc was scratched or whether it's just a dolphin thing.

- the dithering on far away objects was also there also was it not?

Skyward Sword is a 30 FPS game. It's 30 FPS regardless of whether you play it on a Wii or Dolphin.

What do you mean by "audio scratch"? If you are having audio issues I would recommend using the latest development build of Dolphin if you aren't already, check that you have a good rip by verifying the MD5 checksum matches a known good rip, and make sure the game is running fullspeed in the emulator.

Yes, the game uses a "painterly effect" filter for objects in the distance.

New article: Dolphin Progress Report: May 2016

According to the progress report Dolphin 5.0 should hopefully be launching this month.

Crazy.

This emulator is already TOO GOOD.

Honestly, how well it runs pretty much any game now is incredible. Even stuff like Twin Snakes runs near flawlessly now. Only a year ago it was one of the toughest and buggiest to emulate.

And Rogue Leader... oh my it runs so well now. Especially with the underclock feature.

Will it have integrated VR support? I remember there being an update last year saying that they were going to merge DolphinVR with the main branch and add native support for the Vive.

No, and they didn't say they were going to merge DolphinVR with the main branch. The DolphinVR fork violates Dolphin's software license. They instead were working on OSVR based VR functionality for Dolphin which hasn't been finished yet.

Ah, well I guess I gotta wait longer then.

Hmm......everything seems to be running fine, but this is the only rip I have so nothing to compare to.

Dolphin seems to be crashing every 15 minutes or so :/

Some relatively big Dolphin news today, a developer has ported Dolphin to iOS and has opened a pull request to merge it with master. Also every open blocking bug for 5.0 has been marked as fixed which means that the Dolphin 5.0 release should be imminent if no late issues come up.

Can anyone recommend a USB bluetooth dongle for this that I can pick up in the UK?

If you also need a sensor bar I would recommend getting the Mayflash DolphinBar. It is a combined Bluetooth adapter and sensor bar which is designed for being used with Dolphin. If not I would recommend getting an adapter that supports the Toshiba Bluetooth stack, especially if you are on Windows 7. This model comes recommended by the Dolphin team.

What are the chances that Dolphin devs implement some form of SMAA? It would be a nice alternative to the more expensive AA options currently implemented for some of the more demanding games like Metroid Prime Trilogy. I know I could just use SweetFX, RadeonPro, or ReShade, but I prefer not to use external programs for such things if I can avoid it.

Whenever they integrate post processing shader support to master I imagine.

I haven't had a chance to try dolphin VR yet... but is it possible to move the camera in the game's 3D environment but keeping the hud static on screen? I kinda want to try Rock Band drums in VR ha.

I'll fiddle with the new release later today, but I'm afraid my 2012 Mac mini won't be able to do much @2.4GHz.

I should probably install this. I didn't know there was a GC/Wii emulator.

I have GC games and a GC but no GC controller. I can't play anything. :(

And no they don't sell GC controller or GC at all in my country. My GC was given to me by my cousin. They sent it to me from another country. It didn't come with the power cords nor the controller. Just the unit itself and some games.

Anything I should know beforehand? How do I RIP the games?

I have Dolphin 4.x, is there a quick way to upgrade to Dolphin 5.0 or should I just download and have it installed in its 4's directory?

You'd need either way to run homebrew on the GC (which isn't typically that easy), or have access to a Wii (where you'd also need homebrew, but all it takes is an SD card) which could also possibly rip the games.

A PC disk drive won't read those GC disks.
