EA and Starbreeze Studios Announce the Revival of the Cult Classic Franchise Syndicate

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Starbreeze Studios today announced the reinvention of Syndicate, a storied franchise at EA. Created by an all-new development team from the awarding-winning studio that brought gamers The Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness, Starbreeze Studios delivers a unique and brutal sci-fi first-person shooter experience set in a not too distant future, where business is war. Players take on the role of Miles Kilo, Eurocorp's latest prototype agent, and embark on an epic action adventure full of corruption and revenge.

"We are excited to finally reveal what we've been working on the past couple years," says Mikael Nermark, CEO of Starbreeze Studios. "It's been a great experience working with EA, and an amazing opportunity for us to use our expertise in the first person shooter and action genres to bring back, and reignite, the signature action/espionage gameplay of Syndicate."

Set in 2069, Syndicate takes players into a dark, Machiavellian world run without government oversight with many syndicates vying for total dominance of their local market place. With no one to question their intentions or actions, three mega corporations — Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari — are at the forefront of this brutal war for control of the pivotal American market. In the world of Syndicate, everything is digitally connected, including the people. Players aren't limited to the weapons in their hands. Through DART 6 bio-chip technology implanted in their head, players can slow down time and breach the digital world around them to take down their foes using a variety of upgradable hacking mechanics. Syndicate's blend of fast-paced, futuristic, action shooter settings and story combined with innovative chip breach gameplay instantly immerses players in a unique digital world.

"Our goal with Syndicate is to provide a challenging action shooter for today's gamers as well as fans of the original. I'm sure they will enjoy and recognize the legacy that made it such a classic," says Jeff Gamon, EA Partners Executive Producer. "Fans of the franchise will recognize many weapons and environments in the game, but in a whole new way. The game also provides a separate and deep 4-player co-op mode featuring missions from the original cult classic, which adds another layer of depth to the overall experience."

Syndicate will be available in early 2012 for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and the PC. For more information on Syndicate, please visit www.syndicate.ea.com.

Some more details about the game over here: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/318482/syndicate-is-cod-meets-inception-first-details-in-psm3/

As well as shooting, you'll be able to hack into enemies using something called a Dart 6 chip. From here, you can control their actions, forcing them to turn their weapon on their team-mates or even themselves.
In terms of how it looks and feels - think Crysis 2 style gun-play, but set inside Mass Effect's clean, curvy sci-fi world.
The team is treating the Syndicate name with a huge helping of respect. A number of ex-Bullfrog employees are on board, in senior roles, making sure this remake feels like a proper Syndicate game.

I'm very interested to know how open world the game will be or if it'll just be a linear FPS.

Yea... ok let's be honest this IS starting to sound like a straight up shooter with Syndicate influences ( weapons, locations ).

So, they pulled the trigger on this now, with the link to the site not working? Er, what? Why couldn't this have been at Gamescom? "Early 2012" pretty much has to be bullshit.

Nice to see that there is a PC version. Will buy once it hits $5.

why would they put out a press release at this hour?
There was a leak yesterday and it will be featured in a gaming magazine this week.

It's 9 AM here in Scandinavia, so it fits fine into a Monday morning at Starbreeze.

I really hope this game becomes Deus Ex and that Starbreeze goes all in on story, they are one of the few studios that can do storytelling well within the medium.

too many shooters around the bend right now, if this does not blow my skirt up when they reveal it proper than i'll probably pass for awhile. It does not really sound that interesting as it stands right now, but anything is possible.

Another game that the fans of the original will cry about endlessly.

waaaaah it looks nothing like the original..... do you even remember the original? LOL

Day 1 if they put Atlantic Accelerator

Bargain Bin if they DARE to put Urugway

Is this the multiplayer mode that pushed the game back by nearly a year?

hmm EA got some spies poking around over a eidos? Those screens look kind of interesting, but if it's just going to end up as a standard corridor shooter with little freedom than my interest will pretty much be shot.

I'm getting a bit spoiled on these open world games at this point, and with Bioshock, Prey 2, and FarCry 3 next year I probably won't have much interest in this. I'm interested because I like some of Starbreeze's previous work. Will hold out for video before I make any judgements though.

Don't be like that. What if they remade uncharted as a strategy RPG or halo as a text adventure? Sone games change drastically when remade, and that lends credence to the claim they are just trading on a popular name.

I'll deserve judgement, but I don't see why people should feel bad for complaining about beloved series being turned into yet another fps.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I expect Theme Hospital 2 to be an FPS now.

The every-genre-turns-in-to-FPS trend is a bit annoying, but Starbreeze has put out titles that stand out in a sea of Modern Warfare style games so they get a pass in my book.

As with The Darkness and Riddick: Dark Athena, this engine will always look better in motion. Still these screenshots, especially the one that looks like it's of the protagonist, look great to me.

Why even call this Syndicate? Doesn't remind me of the old games at all. Whatever, as long as it's a good game set in a dystopian future, I'm in.

Persuadertron better be in the game. The sound effect still haunts me.
