Eon Productions allegedly mooting a James Bond Cinematic Universe

Get ready for that Moneypenny movie.
With 16 films and a billions of dollars under the bed (we're joking, we're sure it's in a bank somewhere), it's hard to find fault with the way that Marvel and Disney have gone about creating their enormous cinematic universe – and now the brains behind Bond are looking to get in on the action.

Jeff Sneider, a writer for Hollywood Insider, has claimed that the Broccolis, the producer family behind the Bond movies, are more than a bit interested in creating their own inter-connected universe for 007, tweeting: "I've heard the Broccolis have caught Universe Fever and would love to explore other corners of the Bond franchise... simultaneously."

They originally tried to get a spin-off movie based upon Halle Berry's character from Die Another Day off the ground, but they junked that when Die Another Day actually happened. It would not surprise me to see them going down this route again.

Nay.

I don't really even see how this works considering they change Bonds so often.

Side character movies? Don't care.

The fact that most Bond movies were self contained was the best part about them.

Remember how awful retroactively tying all the previous Craig movies to Specter was?

I don't see the reason for this. Spectre was a definite step down from Skyfall. Focus on maintaining high quality for the mainline series.

I think that's it. I mean my big issue with Specter was that it didn't earn it. It was just "oh yeah I did that shit James." And I get shadow organizations would be that way, but shouldn't be that way for the audience. If they knew they were going to make Specter there should have been winks and nods that once Specter hit people could have said "oh shit, now this makes sense." But nope.

They weren't already? There's never really been any indication that the movies aren't already all in the same universe, has there?

Yeah, but they all feature Bond himself. I imagine the idea is that we would have a variety of different movies focusing on different characters- a Moneypenny movie, a Q Branch movie, a Young M movie, a Blofeld movie, etc.

So, on one hand, I love Bond, and think that doing bond spinoffs with other tangentially related characters seems dumb as hell.

On the other hand, one of my favorite villains in the series was Alec Trevelyan, and I think a large part of it was because we so rarely get to see other members of the "00" agents. It would work out really well for the Broccoli family and EON because casting would be even easier, given the high mortality rate for 00's. It'd be pretty easy for you to make a number of movies about some of the other 00 agents foiling sinister plots but dying in the process. It'd certainly give higher stakes than a Bond flick where you know that nothing the villains can do will ever really stop him, and it makes you wonder if this agent or that agent will actually survive.

That said they probably won't do that and they'll make The Adventures Of SPECTRE or some shit.

Imagine EON pitching this.

EON: "We think bringing James Bond here will be a valuable opportunity for everyone."

Studio: "We wholeheartedly agree."

EON: "We also want to make a universe featuring various side characters. You will likely be footing the majority of the bill."

Studio: "I'm sorry, I think I misheard you?"

Moneypenny - An office worker who spends her days and nights pining for the man who keeps making sexual remarks at her at her workplace.

Felix Lighter - A CIA higher up who calls upon MI6 whenever there is crisis

RIVETING

Alright, let's get this out of the way:

This is a shit idea.
They'll fuck it up.
I'll believe it when I see it.

BUT... A movie centered around M during her younger years could be interesting. Her rise through the ranks would provide plenty of material. Probably never gonna happen though.

Most pre Craig movies are in continuity on a rolling timeline like the Simpsons. You wouldn't really notice though because most of the few callbacks to previous movies are throwaway lines or support characters reappearing it occasionally

Casino Royale was a full reboot and there is clear continuity between that and later movies.

Like I said in the other thread it's entirely doable without much effort or change to the core Bond films. Felix Leiter has his own spin off comic right now and wouldn't be a stretch to do the same on film. They can also introduce a new female 00 agent to spin off as well.

I'm not sure it needs to be a "cinematic universe" but they can all co exist.

Maybe it's just me, but I think exploring the world of other 00 agents would make for a better tv series. Like have it be an upper mid-tier show like Strike Back with a modest budget and a passionate team, and air it on a cable network. At least that way it would allow for fuller stories, easy resetting for new seasons, and not over saturate the film side and take away the special event luster that the 007 movies have when they appear.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
It's doable. The movies almost always gloss over this, but there are other 00 agents.

Here's where this goes wrong. If you try to force this, you'll probably just introduce a side character in an action film that people will compare to Bond, and the comparison won't go well for that new character. We saw this happen with The Bourne Legacy. Not a completely terrible film, but people wanted Damon. If they could naturally manage to introduce a character to a Bond film that the audience would want to see more of, then you could spin-off from there. But really, when is the last time you said "Oh, I really want to see more of that person..." in a Bond movie?

Anthony Horowitz's novels might be a good place to look for inspiration though. Trigger Mortis re-introduced Pussy Galore. So like if you re-cast that role and people like it...spinoff?
