ESPN: Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze resigns; escort-service calls cited

Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze resigned effective immediately on Thursday night, with the Rebels' athletic director telling ESPN that school officials found a pattern that included phone calls to a number associated with a female escort service.

Assistant head coach Matt Luke, in his sixth season as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, was named interim head coach.

Ole Miss chancellor Jeffrey Vitter, in a Thursday night news conference announcing the move, said Freeze, 47, resigned after confirming to him and athletic director Ross Bjork "a pattern of personal conduct inconsistent with the standard of expectations for the leader of our football team."

"While Coach Freeze served our university well in many regards during his tenure, we simply cannot accept the conduct in his personal life that we have discovered," Vitter said.

Bjork and Vitter met with Freeze on Wednesday night and again on Thursday, when Freeze offered his resignation.

Freeze, who had about $2 million left on his contract for this year, $5 million next year and $5.15 million for the 2019 season, will not be paid going forward. Bjork said he would have been fired had he not resigned.

Bjork separately told ESPN that once university officials dove deeper into Freeze's phone records on a university-provided cellphone, going back as far as shortly after he was hired in 2012, they started finding more of a pattern with phone calls of the nature USA Today earlier reported after an open-records request.

"Once we looked at the rest of the phone records we found a pattern," Bjork told ESPN. "It was troubling."

Bjork, speaking alongside Vitter in the news conference, called it a "sad" and "unexpected" day for Ole Miss. He said had Freeze not resigned, the school would have exercised a "moral turpitude" termination clause in Freeze's contract.

Whats wrong with hiring escorts?

Yup, dont get it.

He was using university resources to do it. Plus he's in a completely different firestorm regarding cheating in recruiting. This I think it more of a straw that broke the camel's back type of situation.

Also, the former coach is suing the school because they are trying to pin all of the cheating on him. So as discovery continues, it's possible more stuff like this comes out.

The implication is that he was hiring escorts for high school football recruits as an additional incentive for them to come to Ole Miss. This type of thing has happened at other schools.
But other schools aren't also under investigation for straight up paying players.

I am thinking this is the straw that broke the camel's back. He was already under the microscope for stuff by the NCAA.

So many schools. It's not enough to use the attractiveness and cult worship practices of other students to recruit.

I mean, yeah he's definitely a scumbag and I think anyone who follows college football knew something shady was going on when Ole Miss, who was considered a bottom tier SEC school recruiting-wise, started landing top 10 players nationally.

I'm still salty about them stealing Laquon Treadwell from Michigan with this bullshit.

More likely he was getting them for players or recruits, which is an obvious problem.

I seriously doubt that. There isn't a football coach alive who doesn't know that you have your assistants do that stuff. In many cases they are literally there to divorce the head coach from the illegal shit and take the fall if caught.

He may have been calling hookers on state issued phone to come and influence 18 yrs to play for school.

Oh, totally missed that.

Yeah maybe but when was the last time the NCAA really fucked a school up with sanctions? You self sanction yourself for 2 years and they seem cool with just about anything.

I'm just gonna say this

Missisippi State and Ole Miss got too good too quickly and a lot of us knew shit was sus as fuck

Ole Miss just fucked all the way up

Then Freeze had to call a damn escort service after Louisville got in trouble with that shit

We were telling people in the CFB-GAF thread(s) that Ole Miss was cheating in recruiters.

It's Ole Miss. They don't land as many high ranked recruits in such a short span without blatantly cheating

This is the last thing I thought he would resign for.

There's no way he wasn't doing some shady shit, even for college football, with the recruiting classes he was pulling.

Though I guess the escorts could be tied into that.

This is just another trial for the godly man. God allowed Job to be punished too ya know. Mr. Freeze will go pray and fast and it will all be OK.

(screw Ole Mi$$)

I'm from Oxford. The hubbub ranges from "this is awesome, he got what he got", to "NCAA screwed our school again". Mostly the latter from uninformed conservative Oxonians.

Eh, Mississippi State getting better made sense. That revolved entirely around Dak Prescott. They weren't suddenly signing insanely good players, it was just Dak carrying them during his time there. He's starting for the Dallas Cowboys now. And it took LSU wanting him to play TE instead of QB for him to go there (lol Les Miles, you goofed). They fell back to Earth last year, even with another pretty good QB (Nick Fitzgerald) waiting in the wings. Also, Dan Mullen is a pretty underrated QB whisperer.

Ole Miss had a ton of star players foregoing the likes of Bama and Michigan to play for them. That just doesn't happen lmao.

Pretty sure the escort place was in Tampa. So kind of doubt they were for recruits
