Back in the 80 and 90s, they would say that he should have known better because he is a martial artist (i.e. could have done something else that wouldn't have resulted in death) though kids would have joked about him having a "license to kill". Who knows what would happen now... Unless he is an idiot, something completely messed up must have happened to have him resort to using a sword. If a violent altercation was what the victim was aiming for, then Medina wasn't in the wrong and was self defense. A person doesn't just break into a room without aggressive intentions. If I were Medina, I would have defended myself and the woman I love too.

It's all going to depend on what the girlfriend says in the end I think. She's the only witness. The fact that he didn't run but instead called 911 himself, baring any crazy, could very well point more toward self-defense. Of course it will be asked why they went to the room instead of just leaving the apartment.

This sounds like self defense, and the fact that he called the police and didn't run says a lot about the event.
