I never got a definite answer but (some quest spoilers)
There is a quest where the institute is trying to abduct some scientific genius, but they never say anything about replacing him, or if any of the other abductees were scientists.
The way I got mine: I fast traveled to the Brewery where you get the robot that makes beer and went north. There is a part where you can see the pier and scorpions spawn. Not sure it spawn for everyone.
Try adding him to your party then talking to him after. It worked for another companion for me.

abduct normal people and replace them. You even run into events out in the world that shows this. Its never explained unless theres some dialogue or quest i missed, like someone there running some experiment.

Does Sanctuary Hills need an ungodly amount of defense ooooooooooor?
Because there's currently only 7 people and it has 39 defense points. And it's still asking for more. A bit ridiculous. Especially when you consider I have other places with like 11 people and 42 defense with no issues.

Just found a new quest while looking for that radscorpion.
Right next to the Shamrock Taphose, there is a boy on a pier that says he saw a seamonster. Upon swimming there, you can enter a submarine and there is a chinese ghoul in there that needs help.
Defense has nothing to do with settlers. You need Defense = Food + Water combined.

They just don't ever put any effort into companion AI. I played through the main missions with a lone wanderer character, so I'm playing one that uses them this time, and they just refuse to stay put. Or they'll say I can't get there, or walk right in front of you while you are aiming, or stand directly behind you, blocking your retreat from an incoming grenade. I'm having a blast with the gameplay on the whole, but fucking come on.
I wouldnt even be mad. Well I would (lol) but I could very well just buy the season pass now blindly because I KNOW ill buy it when the first is out, and at least it would be adressed. But arent Fallout DLCs usually completely removed from the main narrative?
Can you get ammo for it anyware? I heard from corpses but I shot someone's head off with, went to the head which was impaled on the wall and coudlnt get my spike back :/

The only dmg perks I got were bloody mess and black widow. Recently ive been dumping points into automatic and non automatic rifles because I have nothing else to get so why not (and those are the types I use the most).
My dmg buffs came mostly from having the best mods because of gun nut and science

You don't. You just sell all the shit you don't have perks for and keep the ones you do have perks for.
Like why would you melee on a non melee character? Scrap that, and use the mats to build a weapon you do use.
More like rifle vs automatic. Even if same ammo type. I henge no clue what is down the road and rather not spend the perk.

Anyone know what's wrong with my Sanctuary settlement? It has 20 people, 27 food, 22 water, 90 defense, 30 beds and basically everything it needs. However I have two issues. If I'm not at sanctuary and I check on its status in the pipboy it says zero water, food, beds and defense. The happiness has also plummeted from 81 all the way down to 47.
I also keep hearing people say they're complaining about the "bed situation". I've checked them all, they're all accessible, played out with enough space between them, and no broken objects around them. I'll be pissed if the whole thing is glitched, I spent hours on it.

I'm not a melee character yet use melee on radroaches. It is far easier then trying to shoot them.
Settlements are bugged for a lot of people. I have the water being 0 even though I have 80 and beds at 7 even though I have 25.
Except I'm not. I'm talking like that was the most efficient way to play. Why would you put a ton of points in charisma and zero in melee...? And then melee only the entire game?
...I just... I can't. That is so inefficient I would just-- remind me to never watch anyone else play this game.

I hope this is one of the things they fix first, after performance that is. This is really frustrating.
Those are radroaches tho. Is this a joke??? Would you melee a deathclaw?

As far as I can tell, the ammo type used is the only real difference, aside from what mods you can attach and all that.
I need to know the EXACT spot for the albino radscorpion. I don't find it. =/ Can someone make a map marker and do a screen shot or something? Pretty please. I need that godmode in my hands.

Well using melee is a extreme example because thats andifferent style of play. But you make it sound you cant use shotguns because you dont have the rifle perk, which again, is not true at all
Bloody mess is a dmg buff avross the board as is black widow / lady killer, you can use those. And the late mods you get from science 4 and gun nut 4 also.
Same apart from two synth brahman....

It wasn't sanctuary it was red rocket, that's my main base. Right now sanctuary has minimal defense as it's largely the water supplier for my supply line settlements (alongside some farming), another place is the farming settlement. I'm 5 levels away from my second level to Local Leader.
And then I'm gonna go all out and build my Casino/Trading capital of the Common Wealth.
I'll call it Las Boston
