Was there any official statement from Sony yet?
Their silence is deafening.
On a more serious note, it's the weekend. Expect them to issue a statement on Monday, if they feel the need to reply to this.
3GB+ seems like an exuberant amount of RAM for the OS features they have announced. It seems they're intent to see what OS features stick on Microsoft's system, copy the successful ones and perhaps reduce the OS footprint down the line.
Digital Foundry are known to be in the arses of Microsoft, aren't they?
I love how Richard is quick to find "sources" that tell him what he wants to write.
There you go, same total amount of RAM on both consoles.
Now, back to writing more FUD about the GDDR latency when accessed from the CPU, and enough people will flock back to his beloved XBox.
Is anyone else making a fuss?
I hardly even see people making a genuine fuss here, just pages of silly memes and pictures.
Cerny said latency isn't an issue due to the way they have designed the system. Normally, yeah, GDDR5 RAM has a higher latency but pushes more data than DDR3 RAM.isn't gddr5 higher latency though?
so pro's and cons. great for vram, less so system ram. why is that fud?
I still think PC split pools, massive system ram and plenty of vram if you want it is the way to go.

Good lord. This is even worse than I imagined.
What happened to the original 5.5GB?
Where are all them gigabytes going?
How can the OS demand so many gigabytes?
4.5GB certainly is sufficient.4.5 GB of RAM is more than enough for 1080p games. It's nothing to worry about.
Very disappointing after the hype.

have we indication what the likely usage for system and vram will be in this shared pool? couple of gigs vram max for a 1080 image, the other 2.5 for everything else?
i love it when when people say something like this.
when a site attacks your precious company they must be shills.
Sony never said 8/7GB for games though did they?
Just notice the dick on the wall.....:sUhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........
Too far man, too far.
I was ok with 1GB "flex memory" but only 512MB? Pre-order cancelled.

Not yet.
This is an indication that the real numbers are not too far either. We don't hear any devs complaining about this, especially considering that both consoles are on the same ballpark.

WTF Cerny, why have you forsaken us?? Bath cancelled NSFWish:
Just when I thought Saturday couldn't get any better, this topic pops up again.
On a more serious note, the performance hit should have been an obvious outcome of the flex thing. Designing something for X amount of RAM and then taking some of that away on a whim can't be an ideal situation for the performance of whatever was relying on having X available for use.
Very disappointing after the hype.
Fridayton MK III: Cyberaliens join God's attack on Sony HQ....
Here we go again.
Not "they, Sony". GPU tech is done with GDDR memory in mind and uses cache memory pools next to nearly every computing unit within the GPU to mitigate the high latency, but Sony simply licensed it, not designed it.Cerny said latency isn't an issue due to the way they have designed the system. Normally, yeah, GDDR5 RAM has a higher latency but pushes more data than DDR3 RAM.
no people assume 7 because when it had 4gb only .5 was for the OS, so when they doubled it, people doubled the .5Sony never said 8/7GB for games though did they?

4.5GB certainly is sufficient.
However, what the fuck are Sony doing with 3.5GB of the system memory?
That is the bigger issue as far as I'm concerned. Suddenly Microsoft's 3/5 split doesn't look so bad.
I'm disappointed that the OS RAM usage is so high.
