Week of October 6th to October 12th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at our most synchronized member, Unison!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
I’m playing Smash 3DS right now. It comes with a printed out moves list, which is nice. Other than that I like the Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter series best. Pretty much anything else you play feels like a lousy copy of one of those two games, so why bother with something inferior?
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
I hate the counter system that they added into the Dead or Alive series after number 2. It seems to get worse with each entry, and turns the game from one that emphasizes positioning and timing to one that’s basically just Rock Paper Scissors. I don’t particularly try to master the fighting games that I play, so I haven’t even been a fan of dial-a-combos that require rote memorization either.

The most recent fighting game to impress me with its mechanics was probably Blade Symphony, which is most akin to Bushido Blade or even Jedi Knight multiplayer. It has its issues, and it’s an ugly game, but it shows that there’s an alternate path for the genre to take, if anyone wants to bother.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I am old enough to have played Street Fighter II in the arcades as a kid. I’ve been on board with the genre ever since, though I’ve never really thought of myself as a hardcore player. It’s been bizarre seeing the “Fighting Game Community” emerge to someone who remembers the days you’d claim next by putting your quarters up on the machine.

I play most genres of videogames and also play a lot of tabletop board games (which is part of the reason I don’t have the time to bother specializing in fighting games). I am a dabbler by nature.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
I like Dan because he’s a troll character who points out that fighting game fans often take themselves too seriously. Try to have some fun once in a while, people.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I like to pick random select and experiment with characters.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I’m not at all a competitive person, which is both a strength and a weakness. I’m able to see a game for what it is and have good-natured fun when playing, but I have no commitment to getting better and can’t take seriously people who take videogames too seriously.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
I can’t take this question seriously.
What do you want from future fighting games?
Rag Doll Kung-Fu 2.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
vulva. He’s Canadian, so he probably has some unique perspectives on the genre.

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.
Additionally, if you want to really get involved, you may want to check out the various OTs for specific games:

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
GAF isn't the only FG community in town though. Here are a whole bunch of other FG communities across the internet that may be of interest:
  • 8WayRun - Soul Calibur franchise community
  • DOACentral - Dead or Alive franchise community
  • Dream Cancel - King of Fighters franchise community and resource, more US-centric

Seems like it isn't buzzing as much. I wonder if the Big E controversies had anything to do with that.

No one has been talking about it in any of these threads.
I think the timing and region has a lot to do with that. It's a Southern/Mid-Atlantic major, so it's outside of the NY/LA hype machine.

TFC kinda snuck up on me.

Wow didn't even know it was that time of year already.

I HAVE MULTIPLE STICKS!

I am so high right now.

Being young and feeling high
We will never ever come down

Well, it was an exciting week for Tekken and Smash Bros. fans.

I look forward to joining the Smash party when the Wii U version releases.

I'll also take this moment to say that I'm very grateful two of my favorite fighting game series are successful enough to continuously receive updates and sequels.

Here's to hoping we see some Virtua Fighter 6, Street Fighter V, and Capcom vs. games soon. The next gen has already made significant headway and 2015 will bring out amazing titles. I need to see more fighting games in that lineup.

anybody got any tips on smash 3ds? I picked it up and wanted to play rosalina or palutena. I don't think rosa is good at all outside 1v1 due to setup and I feel that her normals are okay. In 1v1 I feel that she can be solid due to screen control. Palutena I feel mixed about. Horizontal range is meh for me and not sure what to do to open up people due to her lack of range.

Hope somebody can shed some light on this. New to smash overall and probably have wrong opinions about this stuff

Smash is fun, but I continue to dislike the handheld version when thinking about the upcoming console version. I can't control the game like I'd want to, and it's frustrating. Not to mention how chaotic even an XL screen makes everything appear in a 4-player FFA.

Haven't put too much time learning the fundamentals, opting instead to play a bunch of 1v1 games instead. Gravitated towards Sonic; doing relatively well with him.

Huh. Guessing it's a glitch abusing that strange phase-out-of-existence state when a character is IK'ed by Mudo/Hama.

Palutena has her hop into fair. Super good. Most people consider Rosalina to be a contender for S tier.
Palutena shines with her customs. She basically gains a tridash and comboable dive kick. Outside of her customs, I think she focuses on spacing, but doesn't have a great harassment tool. She honestly confuses me a bit. That is why I stick with Bowser...

Super Smash Bros is too hard, why do people say it's easy.
Are there any easy fighting games? What would an easy fighting game even entail?

You aren't getting the 3DS version? :(

I think he meant the fighting game Divekick.
Oh yah. I am tired and Smash obsessed right now. :D

Divekick is mechanically simple, but still demands mastery and thought. I frauded my BIL who just mashes in Tekken for 3 sets in a row. Then he did the same to his wife. Also, some characters are actually complicated, like Stream.

The difficulty of a fighting game is proportional to the size and dedication of the community that plays it.

Every fighting game made requires mastery and thought.

Divekick is simple because it almost completely removes the execution part from the equation. It boils down the fighting aspect to reflexes and decision making.

I don't know anything about that game after the AE update, but I wouldn't necessarily call it "easy." Extremely simple is probably a better word for it—since it wasn't technically demanding in the least—but that game required as much initial effort as any other FG to get efficient at. [I also feel the need to note I won both NeoGAF Divekick tournaments.]

I'm not terrible at Smash for being a beginner at it, but it's certainly "harder" than I expected it to be. It's a much more defensive game than I anticipated. I knew movement was an important factor from watching Evo tournaments and such, but knowing when to properly dodge, block, roll... all that stuff. Feels stranger than other fighting games I've played in the past.

Also, Rhapsody was right in the previous thread. Block stun is deceptively short, leading to big punishes off of moves I would have suspected I'd recover fast enough to defend against.

I would say reflexes, spacing, resource management, pressing the advantage, and yomi (saying "decision-making" is mad vague!)

are custom moves allowed in competitive play?

Also what hop into fair? I tried short hop into normals and they whiff.

Rosalina top tier? hmmm I could see that if somebody had great control of luma, thus shutting down a lot of options.

The thing about Rosalina is that unlike Ice Climbers losing Nana, if she loses her Luma she's still a pretty solid character.

Jury is still out on custom moves in tournaments.

The hop into fair might whiff on small characters, though it should hit against most. Her jab is also really good. Abuse her disjointed hitboxes. I can't pretend I understand her on a deep level, though.

Luma also absorbs projectiles - very annoying...

I go away to do important stuff for a couple of hours and what the hell did you guys even do in those last pages

...Anyways I added everyone that said they'd add my 3ds FC.

Yeah and Down B easily shuts down any projectile that gets past Luma. I personally use Little Mac against her just to not even have Luma as a factor. One slightly charged neutral B or a ftilt near the edge usually kills Luma instantly.

Nemo would've won the MM against FChamp if it wasn't a head to head set up. Reading each other TACs input is very doable if you are sitting near your opponent and FChamp relied far more on TACs than Nemo did.

That is only one example where a different set up would've resulted in a very different outcome in terms of money exchange. $6000 worth of money on that decision.

Ideally all tournaments should be run on a head to head set up but of course logistically I can understand why it isn't run that way. Why do something on two monitors when it can be done on one?

I don't think tournaments would want to spend the expense of buying twice as many monitors, or let him spend the time setting up his splitter

if he gets his way every f-champ cliche member or wannabe will bring his own specific setup with him and spend 30 minutes getting that shit set up for every match.

New era of players man. I call it the cry baby era. This is like the PG era of Wrasslin. The attitude era is gone, and so is the real talk era of the FGC.
