Yes, it's a lot of work. But no more work than many other things.
This is the most ambiguous statement I've ever read.
Day 1 for me.

Does FF8 have boosters ? I forgot.
And I see a similarity here too, where you should have no personal investment in minimizing the faults of this port, but somehow, either emotionally or financially, you do.

It could be better. I made some tests here with screencaps from ps1 emus and Retroarch filters (Ignore the 3D models):Here's some more comparisons

Super-xBR-3p + Natural Vision
Super-xBR-3p + Natural Vision + AdaptiveSharpen
Because it uses Natural Vision shader, which does only this: oversaturate colors from bland games. If it's too much for you, then look at the others without it.Why are these so oversaturated? They look awful.

OMG my eyes...it hurts :O
Btw it's clear that using the same low res backgrounds as a basis there wouldn't be miracles.
I'm surprised they bothered to improve the models.
Like with the Disgaea PC port I'd rather they implemented CRT shaders than mess with all this filtering nonsense. I generally dislike filters that smear the pixel art around.
You want CRT shades for a port of a PSP game?

People have already begun to play with the backgrounds and got really decent results. The modders will make this game look great.

I love how quick people are to call things "lazy" when they don't have to look at budgets or P&Ls like actual businesses do.
This is based off original high-res source art though, which doesn't exist for every background. There is a lot of high res 'lost art' but it's only a tiny fraction of all the art.

Specifically what you quoted is using modern upscale algorithms.
I'm surprised Waifu2x looks decent. It's more meant to tackle lineart, not FFIX's vibrant artstyle, not to mention the source is rather low res.

That's awful, at least with the original art I can see flowers being flowers, not flat polygonal shapes....
It's not perfect but this is honestly close to the best result you could get without having to resort to touching up the image manually or doing models based on the extracted background and rendering it like some insane guys are already doing for FFVII.

Damn that waifu2x filter is amazing. Square should use it for all their PS1 ports. I hope FF9 isn't too hard to mod.
It doesn't look too dissimilar to the results we can get with epsxe + openGL2 plugin and its shader options.
I'm more curious just what the hell is making this a 20GB port. That is approx 10x content the original game has .. is it just lossless FMV's ? That can't be it ...
Maybe this will be the point at which I start trying out final fantasy games. I have no idea where to start with them. I gave up on bothering with 7 since it was spoiled for me and that turned me off wanting to try. I have 13 but haven't got round to it, and know that it isn't considered a great place to start

Check again, the second picture is an animated gif before/after.
I played my PS1 games on ePSXe quite a bit with the opengl2 plugin, and it doesn't look anywhere near as good as that. Waifu is a lot less destructive to the picture.

Wow this is looking like a hot mess.
Hopefully S-E treats the best game in the series, FF8, better than this when it comes time to upscale that one.
Those tiled backgrounds remind me of how ugly FF6 turned out in the mobile version. I doubt FF9 is anybody's favorite (it's the least popular of the PS1 RPGs), but it deserved better treatment than this at least.
Between the poorly upscaled visuals and the awful Zidane being the worst protagonist in the series, I think I'll give this release a hard pass.

How did Vivi end up in Chrono Cross Temporal Vortex ?

It looks pretty good, but they will need to apply it to 400+ something backgrounds with animation and layers so let's see if anyone does it.
I might just be seeing things but I definitely feel like the models have been improved over the PS1 original. Going through that effort, why aren't they at least upfiltering the backgrounds as well, or am I missing something here?
I mean, a lot of that can be automated. Majority of the effort would be seeing if anything breaks or looks off.
