J hus gotta be in the SOTS list

Mate J Hus album is actually THE summer album ATM. I wish more people here checked it out as I think there will be a few fans. Its crazy how big it is in the UK right now. It's not even grime, more UK Afro rap mish mash.

My favourites off the album are Did you see, Bouff Daddy, Plottin, Sweet Cheeks, Fisherman, Like your style.

As a whole though, the album has been in constant rotation. I think out of the 17 tracks, only 3 I don't mess with that much.

yeah common sense is solid

I promised myself I'd try and write something a bit more substantive when it comes to albums, so here goes.

This Yachty album is not very good, and a large part of why it isn't is because of the way the album is structured. Yachty takes a page from Drake and Young Thug, pre-Lyor Cohen, and just made an album stuffed to the brim with tracks that aim to satisfy the largest possible audience. You have a full-on 80s throwback pop song with "Bring It Back", you have more hip-hop cuts like "DN Freestyle" and "Peek a Boo", you have the more pop tracks like "Harley" and "Made of Glass". With 21 tracks, it becomes noticeable that the album isn't consistent in terms of the individual tracks' quality. It doesn't help either that the trappings of Yachty's lane, a.k.a. "mumble rap" or whatever the fuck you want to call it, mean that most of the songs are just chorus with bursts of verse. It reminds me a lot of the advice Will.i.am gave to Charli XCX: “The verse — just say random words. Nobody listens to the verse.” It also doesn't help that the verses, when they do pop up, consist of mentioning how rich he is, how he loves his family, how he loves this girl, how he's a tough dude, or how he'll fuck your aunt / mother / stepsister / etc. Every track feels like it treads the same lyrical ground over beats that are fundamentally interesting. The best beat on this album is either "Bring it Back" or "Peek-a-Boo", but everything else sort of just fades away from memory.

All in all, Yachty's album is endemic of the problem that Drake's created in terms of the album. By adopting the structure of pop albums and focusing on quantity & mass appeal over a singular vision, Drake, Yachty, et al. handicap their artistic works by underestimating the strength and power of a cohesive album. From now on, 15+ song on an album are a red flag as to the album's quality.

This is just a long-winded way of saying the album's trash.

gotta have to check this out.

i think the times have changed. sadly everybody in hip hop still treats Eminem like the boogieman, and he really was in the early 00s when you beefed with him. he was an ender of careers basically. but now I think he prolly isn't bothered and also he's too washed up to really do any harm as well.

we'll see what happens or if anything comes of this battle of cornballs.

speaking of corny garbage 21 tracks of a Lil Yachty album? lmaoo no thanks. i don't even mind lil boat either but nahhh.

Droptopwop though...whewwww

metro boomin gave gucci some amazing shit. Helpless sounds like it was a lost recording from the Terminator 1 soundtrack.

Ah, found a working stream for DropTopWop now. I don't like Gucci much, but these beats, whew.

Listened to the Yachty album. Never again. Boring, aimless, too long. Some cool beats here and there maybe.

Listening to Voodoo for the first time, really dope, I'm taking to this sound a lot easier than I took to the sound on Black Messiah.
His first two albums are pure blisssssss. Black Messiah was different sound-wise, but great too. Really Love is one of my fave songs:

Better than Yachty. LOL@the "flat earth" line.

I'll still never understand what made Carly Rae Jepsen acceptable amongst certain crowds as an artist over Beyonce.
Also Emotions peaks with the first track (the first track is incredible though).

Anybody here who can 100% tell apart the 3 Migos, lol? I still have issues with Takeoff and Offset.

EDIT: LOL, okay, I have issues with Quavo too, it seems. Thought it was Quavo on the Gucci track just from listening. It's actually Offset.
