GAF plays...31 Nights of Horror...4

I finished up Resident Evil 4 about a week or two ago now currently in the middle of The Last of Us.

Since Resident Evil HD is free this week on PS+ I may play that after TLoU. And I might end the month with The Evil Within.

Annnnnd I may restart Dying Light

Playing REmake HD Remaster on PC with Chris (something I never do...). Damn collection those small key and managing your inventory sucks!

Last time I played was AGES ago on the Game Cube and I forgot so much about it. Guess I'll have to watch a speed run with Jill to see how complete it quickly and get the Rocket Launcher.

Was thinking about what to play for this spooky month, and I forgot that I actually have this game, but never finished it, so think I will get back to it.

I had a feeling Maria scenario in SH2 wasnt all that...

I wonder if Gremlins 2 would count as a halloween type game. The music sure has the vibe.

Been playing the original Resident Evil on PS1 with Jill this weekend. Just met my first hunter. Awesome move how they made all the safe rooms in the mansion unsafe again!

Im going to play as Chris next, but Im not sure if im going to do original again, or Directors Cut. Any opinions on this?

Anyways, I really like the game so far. The tension is high at all times, the limited ammo and inventory spaces makes playing it really strategic - which I like. And even the puzzles are mostly fun. The two bosses I have fought so far have been really disappointing though, but i guess its pretty hard to make interesting bosses with this control style (even though MGS managed it). And by the way, how the hell does Barry manage to move around without collecting keys and solving puzzles???

So, I got almost to the end of Resident Evil Code Veronica this evening... All I have to do at this point is defeat the final boss. But man, the section right before it is gruelling! All without a save point, you have to go through an area as Chris, then switch to Claire and face an enemy that can kill you in two hits (It's literally impossible to avoid his attacks, so you need at least two Full Health recovery items), THEN fight a boss as Chris who can kill you in one hit!

So frustrating. I got through it, and despite being so close, I decided to take a break and play some Akumajo Dracula:

6YdOzO2.jpg

I'm playing it on the FDSStick, which I just received earlier in the week! Despite being so familiar with the original Castlevania, it's exciting having to "flip" a disk, and have a save file, so I don't have to beat it all in one go. Plus, there's a new piece of music on the Save Select screen that isn't in the NES release!

Also pictured is my "Super 8-Bit IPA" that I drank this evening while partaking in some game playing. It's from Richmond BC, and it's delicious. Plus, the bottle is amazing.

Got some things horror related on the ol backlog that I've been meaning to try. Gonna try to play DOOM 3, Home on Steam, S.T.A.L.K.E.R SOC, and finally finish P.T. The big one I'm looking forward to is Resident Evil Remake when it gets released via PS Plus! Never played any RE games other than 4 and the RE 7 demo.

Alright today I started working FEAR, completing the first three intervals, and so far it feels like the game holds up pretty damn well 11 years later. The gunplay feels solid, and along with some smart AIs and slow motion ability can make fights pretty engaging and fun.

Game takes no time bringing in the horror factor too, already throwing hallucinations in the first interval, and soon seeing frequent sightings of Alma, who while not quite original looking, is creepy.:p I think so far the atmosphere is pretty well, and it partly thanks to the lightning, that is really strong still. The sound design seems pretty well done to contribute to the atmosphere too.

A trip through a wastewater treatment plant (interval 2-3) was good, even through I can already see a bit of repetitiveness. Shall see how it goes as I continue on Tuesday.

Started Silent Hill 2 yesterday and played through the first 3 or 4 hours. Playing on Hard/Hard difficulty.

As a big horror fan, this (along with SH3, which is up next) has been on my "wall of shame" for an embarrassingly long time. My buddy was nice enough to lend me his silver PS2 slim (which, by the way, is one very sexy video game console).

I'm really liking it a ton so far (left off in the west apartment building). The beginning was a bit of a slow burn, but it's been awesome since I've gotten off the streets. Even as a 15-year-old game, the atmosphere is off-the-charts good. The music/sound design in particular is outstanding. The combat is kinda "eh", but it's making up for it with the very unsettling mood and the obtuseness of the puzzles, a big thing from horror games of that era that I really miss.

Been playing some more Resident Evil with Jill, and I feel like Im getting pretty close to the end having just gotten to the save spot in the underground laboratory. The game is still awesome for sure. Definitely going through with Chris when Im finished, although Im not sure if going to do Directors Cut or original with him too. Probably directors cut.

On the list for this month:

RE0 remaster
Alien Isolation
Until Dawn
Outlast
Vanishing of Ethan Carter

Only Zero have I played before, so this should be a good month!

Im probably finishing my Jill-run tomorrow. Then I will try to do:

RE:DC with Chris
RE2
Dino Crisis

After that, we will see. But that is my goal for the month.

I just finished SOMA about a week ago and I was trying to convince myself to quit being a pussy and get around to playing Amnesia already. I also always tell myself it would be cool to play some horror games around October/Halloween but rarely end up actually doing it. I think I'll use this thread as motivation to finally get around to doing both! Had a quick look through my Steam library and looks the list is going to be:

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Grim Dawn
Outlast + Whistleblower DLC
Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster
The Walking Dead Season 2

Some of them have been sitting in my backlog for a little while, so it'll be good to finally scratch them off. Just gotta finish Quantum Break first.

Nice list! I loved Alien Isolation and Outlast. Also, do yourself a favour and play the DLC: "Outlast - The Whistleblower". It wraps up the story nicely, and has one of the best/most memorable antagonists in a long time.

So I managed to do this:

My first time beating this absolute classic, and like I've already written a few times, I just loved it. So what makes the game good? Well

First of all I think the fact that the game is challenging is a great feature, even though Im pretty sure I would be nowhere near as challenged the second time around. The fact that there is a very limit number of resources at your disposal, mean you have to think carefully about everything you do, including when and where to save. For instance when the hunter start crowding the house, figuring out the route to avoid as many as possible, is essensial to conserve those valuable shells. The fact that all enemies take a ton of shots to kill, that some safe rooms get repopulated, and that your movement is quite clumsy, all mean you have to plan ahead constantly - and also not be afraid of dying. Reminds me a bit of the Souls-game in this regard.

Second, all this creates a lot of tension which is of course the whole point of this game. And i didnt feel like the game was dated at all in this regard. Every time I entered a new room, I instantly took up the map to check where I should explore, and where enemies might hide. This imo just shows how well the game succeeds in its goal.

Third, the presentation is really fantastic. I know a lot of people like to shit on early 3D, but I actually thought the mansion, enemies, details etc were really great. And the atmospheric music is also really good (at least in the version I played).

Fourth, the interconnected level design is what makes the game so enjoyable to play, especially inside the mansion. This falls a bit apart in the end when you leaves the mansion, but for the first 2/3s of the game, its really fun to roam around the house.

Now the only really bad thing about the game, is in my opinion the bosses. I never cared to fight them strategically at all, I just brough enough healing items to take the damage, and then blasted away with whatever was my strongest weapon at the time. I adopted this strategy because your movement speed compared to the bosses are simply to slow, making it really frustrating trying to play them strategically, avoiding damage etc. Also, the constant camera switching and small space, also makes them more annoying than fun to play. In sheer presence, they were all good though, especially considering the hardware.

Last, I wouldnt exactly call it great, but I did enjoy the terrible story and acting, and while the main team wer imo all pretty bland, Wesker just gave away such a cool presence. Happy that I will see more of him!

All in all, i think the original Resident Evil definitely holds up, and Im looking forward to an even better challenge when I tackle Chris in the Directors Cut - a game I actually got my this threads very own and very generous Teknoman.

Reached interval 7 in F.E.A.R. Been mostly in offices and labs since interval 4, and the repetitiveness has set in some more, through the game does break it up a little from time to time from the usual gunfights least, particularly to give the horror aspect some more spotlight.

One of my favorite parts so far is the second half of interval, where for a decent bit, there is no actual gunfights at all till later near the end of the level. For a time, it was just the point-man, navigating through a series of deserted room, till entering into a big room with the way I came from suddenly being closed off. I was expecting a squad of replicas to come in, but nope, nothing, until I went upstairs, and checked into one of the office rooms when I encountered this clinging on the wall.

AssassinLunge.jpg

Replica Assassins. These creeps would either attack you, or evade you and disappear into the darkness, turning invisible, before coming back for you. Might even hide till you come around to them too. It was then moving on to fight a few of them in mostly dark or dim lighted hallways, man and did it felt so cool and tense to fight these. Aaaaaand they haven't been used since as of interval 7. Not that I want a overload of them, but would be kind of nice to have them make a couple more appearances least.

Anyway despite some repetitiveness, and introducing a fat guy that is quite annoying thus far, this game still feels like a blast. I kind of like that eventually a plasma gun of sort is introduced and you can roast most enemies to their bones lol. I also like small exploration there is, where you can find upgrades and listen to voice mails for more lore.

NIGHT 5: Resident Evil 0 - PS4. Though I cheated on the picture below and put my old Gamecube copy in there, haha. Paired with Pumpkin Pie Spiced Ale from Alley Kat:

J7xVAWv.jpg

TcgtsGz.jpg

First off... Pumpkin Pie from Alley Kat brewery in Edmonton is probably the best pumpkin beer out there. It's amazing, though it's a bit on the sweet side, so stay away if you like only super bitter drinks.

Onto Resident Evil 0... I haven't played this game since it first released on the Gamecube, so it's been some time. The HD port looks amazing: unlike the HD port of REmake with upscaled the 480p prerendered backgrounds, it looks like they had access to the original 3d models this time (or had original rendered them at a higher rez), so everything looks really sharp.

The game itself is one of the weaker RE titles though. The dual character system is pretty neat at first (And you can see where the franchise is heading with RE5 and RE6), but the lack of item boxes kills the game. I've only played up until the first boss, which is very near the beginning, and my inventory is already full with both characters, and there's still a ton of items I'm coming across. You have to constantly pick up and drop items, ferrying them along the game. That said, I probably won't have 10 First Aid Sprays, 5 green herbs and 30 ink ribbons by the end like most other RE games, haha.

The game is gorgeous, and the atmosphere is great, if not as foreboding as the REmake. All in all, I'm still enjoying it, but as the 5th "classic" RE in a row, I'm kinda looking forward to the more action-oriented later games.

Good lord, Dracula is full on no chill mode in Bloodlines. I forgot how intense that fight was! The music combined with just how fast he moves and his final form's desperation attacks! Just throws everything and the kitchen sink at you...even his body parts. Maybe its because its an incomplete resurrection?

Regardless, Castlevania Bloodlines aka New Generation really needs more love. Had no idea there was even a version of Simon's Theme in the game.

Night of F.E.A.R continues as after more offices, more fights, more alma shenanigans, a few air turrets, and a short escort that led into a amusing elevator fight, the game finally moves on from office and lab buildings to abandoned apartments via interval 8. Bit more eerie environment, and with all the holes in the walls, it looks to make fights more interesting from what I can tell.

Started the Directors Cut of Resident Evil with Chris tonight, and the opening was actually pretty hard with the very limited ammo and only Beretta, especially considering quite a few rooms now have 3 zombies, and it doesnt really seem like there are a lot more supplies. Just solved the piano puzzle now and got the third key, so considering which rooms I have left, I guess that means it is Snake-time tomorrow!

Everyone knows not to play the original RE version with the bad music, right? It should be obvious if it's the one. The original RE had one of the all time best eerie soundtracks, the one major thing the game has over REmake.

I'm going to try to finish Fatal Frame 1 and 2 this Halloween. Those are the scariest games I've played. Atmosphere and music that can compete with Silent Hill but the ghosts are more dangerous and unpredictable. You often for example will think you're safe and then a ghost will come out of the wall behind you.

I just finished the original game (with original, awesome music) this week, and am now playing the version with the bad music. Its the version of DC I own, and I was also getting kinda curious about this music since everybody despise it so much. Honestly, it hasnt really affected my enjoyment much so far, even though i do agree the original music is superior.

Fired up some retro stuff on the pc engine:

Splatterhouse, Magical Chase and Jigoku Meguri

Splatterhouse, I don't think I'm ever going to touch the US TG16 version as it;s just too censored!

Jigoku Merugi is a nice relaxing stroll through the supernatural realms, Take control of Bonze and use your mala beads and power them up with special holy water embued with the elements of fire, lighting and earth and journey into the underworld and put to rest the restless creatures of the night.

Although I was playing the US version of Magical Chase that rom was on the everdrive. I love MC and still do today even though it's hardly scary it's cute and bright and I just love the music in this. The real scary thing is the price it fetches today >_>

This is a good idea. I recently finished Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0. I might go with Haunting Ground. I found a very reasonably priced copy about a year ago and have yet to play it. I played it back when it first came out, but sold it. I had always regretted doing so until I stumbled upon the one I have now.

Wish I still had Rule of Rose...

To anyone else that has finished it... Is it just me, or is it terrible? The story was absolute gibberish and uninteresting, the notes tried way too hard to be artsy and poetic instead of giving interesting lore, and the environments were drab and uninteresting. The pigs also pointless and probably would have been more interesting if they didn't have them chase you at all and were only shown in the non threatening environment sections that appear later in the game.

Onto the next game!

Think I'm close to finishing The Last of Us,
in Winter, I'm at the section where Ellie breaks away from Dave and is on the run
. It's such a well crafted game and if I had more time, I'd replay it immediately on a higher difficulty.

So now I'm trying to decide which game to put on deck.

Resident Evil HD
Resident Evil 5
Dying Light
The Evil Within

I already own Dying Light and REmake was free, so leaning towards one of those. How scary and/or frustrating is The Evil Within?

I didn't find Evil Within too scary, but it certainly was really enjoyable, if a bit flawed. I loved the atmosphere/style of the game, and it has a few awesome moments. The whole thing is a mishmash of genres, leaning heavily on Resident Evil 4 (Enemy behaviour, certain areas, especially near the beginning), The Last of Us (Stealth/weapon crafting), and a few others.

Definitely don't go in expecting the second coming of horror games, but if you don't mind a bit of jank, it's really fun. The DLC is quite good too.

It's not scary, other than the first chapter which is what I wish the whole game would have been like. (You have no weapon and are defenseless) The rest is like a RE4 but with the few scary parts removed.

Swap Evil Within with an old RE, a Silent Hill, or a Fatal Frame.

Finished Silent Hill 2 last night. Beat it on Hard and got the "Leave" ending.

Glad to have finally done this one. I enjoyed it for the most part, particularly with respect to the atmosphere, puzzle-solving and the overall progression of the game. The gameplay mechanics are pretty suspect and things fall apart during the boss fights/encounters, but it makes up for it with its presentation, storytelling and unsettling tone.

I appreciated it for being more of a psychological thriller/mystery rather than going for jump scares, and in general I didn't find it to be very scary at all. It's a lot more moody, which is more of a compliment than a knock on it.

Overall, when comparing it to some of its contemporaries, it probably falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. I wouldn't put it on the same level as my favorite RE or FF games, but SH2 is still a really good game at the end of the day. SH3 is next...

Silent Hill 2 is in my top 5 favourite games of all time (And the only horror game to crack that list!). I don't particularly find it scary (though it is very unsettling), but the storyline, adn the way it's told/revealed over the course of the game really stuck with me.

The first time I finished the game, I couldn't sleep. Not because I was scared, btu I couldn't stop thinking about the game. James, his wife, what the different monsters signified to James, why Maria existed... I'm getting shivers just thinking about it.

"If you really want to see Mary, you should just DIE. But you might be heading to a different place than MARY, James"

Here's my Castlevania Bloodlines playthrough.

I probably could have one shot the game, save for some mistakes at the Tower of Pisa. Or at least not have gone down to my last life and no continues lol. But alot of the time, thats what pushes me to beat the final boss on the first try in any classic action game.

Was able to get to the laboratory in RE:DC tonight, and in general, I think I like this experience (Chris/arranged) better than Jill/normal. The difficulty is harder, but that seems better balanced as the tension is higher. I hate the limited saving though. I had to do everything in my second run in the mansion in one because of that, and with the unpredictable hunters and a boss fight, that took a lot of tries to pull off.

Probably finishing this next week, and then going on to Resident Evil 2 (on the Dreamcast). Is that also a game I should be prepared to beat twice because of different characters?

Yup, though you get a "Scenario A" and "Scenario B", where things alter slightly depending on the character you play as first. The "Canon" seems to be Claire A/Leon B. Man, Resident Evil 2 is so good, and it looks awesome on the Dreamcast. I played through it early this year on DC
Before my DC died... :(

I myself played a little Nightmare on Elm St today. It was paired with the Toothless Pumpkin Sour Ale by Phillips Brewery.

vSNtmvW.jpg

This game is totally underrated. It'ss a Rare game, with a David Wise soundtrack, the controls are tight, it's 1-4 players (Bust out that Four-Score!), and it's just plain fun. The game has you visiting various houses on Elm St in order to collect Freddie's bones, before finally returning them to the boiler room in Elm St school.

VBZ3XAo.jpg

The whole game runs on a awake/sleep cycle: you have a timer running the whole time, counting down before your character falls asleep. Once asleep, enemies become more powerful, but you also can use Dream Warrior Powers, such as Wizard, Ninja, or Track and Field Star (?). These allow you to throw projectiles, jump higher, etc...

zsfGQzT.jpg

All the bosses take place in dream mode, so you have free use of your powers against them. Also, if you spend too much time asleep, Freddie shows up and you have to go up against him in order to continue the game.

It's a total gem, and the whole thing is a blast, especially with friends. Like Friday the 13th, it gets a lot of crap online nowadays thanks to AVGN, but it's a solid title. I got the the second to last level before getting Game Over, so I'm a little rusty, but I had a blast.

Also, the beer was delicious. 2016 is the year that EVERYONE put out craft sour beers... And I don't mind!

Playing through Silent Hill Shattered Memories. Quite a unique experience!

I was not a fan, bland creatures and the terrible chase sequences ruined it for me (same with Downpour)... That was always my favorite part of Silent Hill, slowly taking my time in the nightmare world, looking at everything and thinking "What in the actual fuck is wrong with the creators of this game?"

When you are chased through the nightmare sequences, you don't get that disturbing, chilling experience of realizing you are in a nightmare... You only get a "Better not screw this up or else, what path should I take?" mind set.

Yeah it's not as good as a real (Japanese) Silent Hill, but it's an interesting twist. Some amazing clever gimmicks, like the psychology tests, almost fell off my chair when I saw 'my' blue car and pink shirts!

Silent Hill 1 remains by far the best game in the series. All the (Japanese) sequels have their positives but are no where near as clever.

I cant wait till I get the chance to sit down with 1 again. The first time I played, I had no idea what I was doing, and got the ending where Harry was dead/comatose and all the events were just in his mind.

I did like the Wiimote speaker gimmick stuff though. And of course IR flashlight is and will always be awesome.

Silent Hill 1 is truly brilliant. The best ending (apart from the joke
dog alien
) is a
self-closing time loop
.

The sequels make no sense, especially 2 and 4, There's nothing special or crazy about the town itself, the weirdness is all
Alessa's drug-fueled Sumerian demon powered nightmare
. No Alessa, no 'upside-down' (unlike Stranger Things ;) ) You can tell the creator of the series was gone, because those left didn't understand it.
