Game Informer July cover story: Halo 5 [Up: Character Shots]

Curiously, I was wondering the same thing since Buck was in Reach but Rookie wasn't the the 6th of Noble six.

Buck was never in Reach. Not sure where you got that from. The only game Buck has appeared in pertaining to the Halo series has been ODST.

Buck is looking sexy as ever.

And it's cool to see that 343i is taking a more Halo: Reach inspired approach to the story.

I really don't get the Buck love. What's so great about him?

He was. New Alexandria has several random objectives. In of those, you are ordered to escort Buck with your Falcon.

Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck requests assistance on a classified mission. Noble Six is instructed by Kat to escort Buck’s Falcon. Buck's exact task varies; he may be rescuing his men from various danger or just transitioning inside/out of the city.

How did buck make it off Reach alive? Was he on the Pillar of Autumn?

I really don't know this. Buck and Veronica talk about it on Coastal Highway, the last Halo 3: ODST mission, but never mention how exactly. He wasn't on the Pillar of Autumn, though.

I don't get the Nathan Fillion love either, lol. He seems alright, certainly more interesting as an actor than Buck is as a character.

I want to play this badly but there is something bugging me about the way the story seems to be going. Hope I'm just being paranoid.

Didn't Reach happen before ODST?
Yep, Reach is a couple months before ODST.

I seem to remember Buck shouting something about it being like Reach all over again when the Covanent start glassing New Mombassa (or excavating the areas nearby with the plasma weapons)

Yep, that's what they are talking about on Coast Highway, like I said. They never mention how exactly they got away though.

I'm intrigued.

Not excited... Halo 4 and the fucking MCC burned me too much to really ever trust 343, but I'm at the least intrigued to see more.

Although, is anyone else sorta amused at how much Destiny-ish stuff seems to be making it's way into Halo 5? It's just odd to me, I don't know if it's intentional references, or just purely coincidental design choices.

I mean... Halo 5: Guardians. Fireteam Osiris. Not to mention all the "Spartan Abilities" are ripped straight from Destiny's subclass abilities.

Not trying to make some sort of point, but I just think it's interesting.

Halo has been saying Guardians since like halo 2 I would say it's just bungie re-using their old stuff.

Holy shit, 343 is rectifying the mistakes Bungie made in regards to books being canonical or not.

I'm calling dibs on Linda.

They started doing that in Halo 4.

I love what Frankie said about Cortana and the legacy she leaves in the series, and how it's important to acknowledge the sacrifice she made in the previous game in this new release. The last time 343i said they were going to do something serious and real with regards to Cortana and the Chief's characters, and that they would explore some more depths of those characters, they delivered in spades. I think it's one of the key ways in which 343i is a better steward of the franchise than Bungie imo. 343i from the sense I get from them as a studio, enjoys the extended fiction more and is more willing to dive in and tackle certain things in the games. So when they say they're going to focus on how the Chief copes with the loss of Cortana I believe them because they absolutely proved they will do and tackle what they say they will with Halo 4.

Very excited about the audio improvements also. That was one of the more awesome improvements in Halo 4. Loved the mjolnir noises that would be made when the chief broke into a full sprint. I liked being able to hear more of the armor and how heavy it was. Sound design was just fantastic all around.

I have never been so happy to hear about an fps until I read this. My interest in halo 4 and 5 (but still upbeat and hoping) was a passing 'heh'. Now I am very much excited.
