To be replaced by equally shitty Xbox Live for Windows 8.
Wait wait wait a minute. So this mean I cant play World in Conflict online after that day? What about earning achievements for singleplayer games like Halo 2?
I hope Valve isn't going to just sit by and do nothing if single player games become impossible to play. Is there anything in the Steam license agreement about this type of stuff?
Valve has said many times over that if Steam servers were to go down, they'd release updates to let you download and play your games forever for free.

If by many times over, you mean once in a decade-old SPUF forum post that has long since been deleted and which was made before Valve began selling third-party games and before the Steam client underwent many significant architectural changes, then sure.

I assume all GFWL games will be shut down. RIP Dark Souls.
I wonder if devs and publishers were warned that this announcement would come, or if they're surprised... I mean, people have a lot of questions how things are going to be handled but it kinda looks like MS has washed their hands of this aside from announcing the end. Are devs/publishers going to tell people how to access their games in the future?

Show me any of these statements from someone other than a Steam forum mod.

I think it was a magazine, a long long time ago.
Eh, at least that probably means relevant Valve games are covered. If by many times over, you mean once in a decade-old SPUF forum post that has long since been deleted and which was made before Valve began selling third-party games and before the Steam client underwent many significant architectural changes, then sure.

I can't believe that people believe this. Removing the DRM from non Valve games would no doubt put Valve in a world of trouble.
There is a program where you can unlock GFWL achievements.

The fact this has worked since 2011 just shows the care MS has had for GFWL. I personally did it myself to get to the 30K GS for the bonus MS points rebate on my 360. Achievements and trophys are meaningless to be so i didn't care if it defeated the spirit of them. Fallout 3 and FUEL doesn't even need that program, you can unlock all the achievements using the debug menu.
Gamespy posted an article saying the last time GFWL got a new feature added was when George Bush was President.

So...I really like Dark Souls. finished it many times, nowadays I just play multiplayer. I play on PS3 but I figure Sony will want to kill the PS3's online at the earliest date they can get away with. So the other day I picked it up on pc. Haven't installed it or anything, Just as a precaution for the future. I figured it will have a longer multiplayer life there.
Apparently not.
How dire is the situation? Are Bamco the type to patch in steam support for this old game when the sequel will be out months before GFWL dies off? Or can the multiplayer be kept alive some other way?

MS Resets gamerscore for this don't they?
At the time it was only Valve games to be fair. Either way i wouldn't be worried, digital is the future and here to stay.
Not if agreement with this policy was required for a publisher to put their game on Steam
Think about how much Namco and From cared about the Dark Souls PC port, then imagine them paying to rip out the GFWL multiplayer code and replace it with entirely new netcode just so people who already paid for the game can continue to play.
News like this worries me. When people lost their games from Impulse, I worried. When the "sign every new TOS or lose your games" controversy happened with Steam, I worried and also started buying less from Steam.
Why wouldn't you worry about your digital games when things like this happen?

I'm curious though. Did GFWL ever fix the exploit which let you get any other game on the store by buying only one game? I wont go into the details, but my friend got several games on the store for free by just getting one game. This exploit could also be extended to getting free games for OTHER people.
To think I was considering buying Gears of War... So glad I resisted.
If they do a dollar sale on the 21st before it gets shutdown, I will bite.

A sale on all games on the last day would be great.
$1 Gears, $1 Viva Pinata. Bring it.
Fuck lolIf they do a dollar sale on the 21st before it gets shutdown, I will bite.
So much for the power of the cloud.

You know...this is actually a pretty salient point.
This is fucking bullshit. This is what I get for waiting for a PC port?
Hopefully the Dark Souls community will somehow find a fix for this. Like it found a fix for the shoddy port job.
Wow, you're an optimist. Let me explain something about revenue: it comes from game purchases. Patches don't make money, they cost money. I'm sure the games that are still selling well enough will be put on other stores, but that doesn't guarantee a patch for the old GFWL versions that we've bought.
Now, hopefully, most of these companies will do the right thing, but there's little financial incentive for them to do so. And even then, there are a couple of developers and publishers that don't even exist any more. It's hard to imagine that every game is going to survive this.
You will be able to upgrade Street Fighter IV to the Ultra version which will not use GFWL multiplayer.
